Obamas Endorse Harris

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday. Their endorsement makes Ms. Harris all but the presumptive nominee.

"At this critical moment for our country, we're going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you'll join us," former President Obama wrote in a message posted on X early Friday morning.

The Democratic Party's rules committee earlier in the week had committed to hold a virtual vote to select the party's nominee to face former President Donald Trump in the general election in November. Prior to the rules decision, Ms. Harris had already secured the endorsements of the majority of the delegates needed to win the nomination vote on the first ballot.

Olympics Hurdles

The opening day of the Paris Summer Olympics was marred by coordinated arson attacks on France's rail system, stranding some 800,000 travelers across Europe, including athletes traveling to the opening ceremony. The attacks targeted remote parts of the rail system away from the capital, hitting pipes that contain the network's signaling cables.

French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Olympic Games open at roughly 5 p.m. ET. The opening ceremony featured a dazzling light show at the Eiffel Tower and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, which floated into the sky on a balloon.

The opening ceremony, the first held in Paris since 1924, did not proceed without triggering some of the common controversies of the day. Conservative media and commentators were dismayed that the ceremony featured a reenactment of the Biblical Last Supper scene acted out by a group of drag queens.

Jusepe de Ribera's 'Holy Family'
Jusepe de Ribera's 'Holy Family'
The 17th century was a glorious time for Spanish Baroque art. The period is referred to as a Golden Age, and it had a quartet of famous painters.

Jusepe de Ribera was born in the province of Valencia, Spain, to a shoemaker and moved to Italy by 1606. He spent his early years abroad working primarily in Rome and Parma. In 1616, Ribera settled permanently in Naples, Italy, and became the city's most important painter, influencing a generation of artists near and far.

Ribera's Masterpiece

What you are seeing now is "The Holy Family With Saints Anne and Catherine of Alexandria" from 1648 by Ribera. It is displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The subjects are the Virgin Mary, Jesus, Saint Joseph, Saint Anne (Mary's mother), and Saint Catherine. In the foreground, the Virgin Mary, dressed in blue and red, holds the Christ Child; their heads lean against each other. Saint Catherine kisses Jesus's outstretched right hand in a poignant detail.
