Harris Picks Walz

Vice President Kamala Harris named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation about the second name at the top of the Democratic ticket. Harris and Walz rallied supporters in a packed arena in Philadelphia later in the day. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was among a handful of finalists in the veep-stakes, spoke at the event.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years and worked as a highschool teacher in Mankato, Minnesota, for two decades before going into politics (more here). As lawmaker and governor, he supported progressive policies akin to Harris.

The Philadelphia rally kicked off a tour of battleground states covering Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. Much of Harris's 32-minute address was devoted to introducing Walz, who was little known outside Minnesota prior to being placed on a shortlist of candidates for the vice presidential nod. She described Walz as a fighter for the middle class and a patriot who believes in the promise of America.

Cori Bush Loses Primary Challenge

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) lost a primary challenge on Tuesday to Wesley Bell, whose run was fueled by millions from a pro-Israel super political action committee. As of Aug. 2, the United Democracy Project, a super PAC partially funded by AIPAC, had spent about $8.6 million to knock out Bush. AIPAC's endorsement message of Bell said his opponent is "a leading anti-Israel voice in Congress."

In the House, Ms. Bush has repeatedly called for a cease-fire in the nearly year-old conflict and for the United States to end aid to Israel. She has also said the Jewish state is committing a "war crime" and an "ethnic cleansing campaign" against Palestinians.

According to AdImpact, more than $18.2 million had been spent on political advertising in this primary race as of Aug. 2, making it the second-most expensive primary contest ever. The most expensive primary also featured a Democrat targeted by AIPAC. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) lost his primary challenge in June.

Heavy Metal Chocolate

Is your favorite dark chocolate bar harboring a hidden health risk? A new study published on July 31 in Frontiers in Nutrition suggests that some popular dark chocolate products may contain concerning levels of heavy metals, particularly lead and cadmium.

The study, conducted by researchers from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and ConsumerLab.com, analyzed 72 dark chocolate and cocoa products sold in the United States from 2014 to 2022. Their findings shed light on a potential health concern that has been bubbling beneath the surface of the chocolate industry for years.

Dark chocolate, long touted for its potential health benefits due to its high antioxidant content, has faced scrutiny in recent years due to reports of heavy metal contamination. Consumer Reports found heavy metals in popular chocolate brands (see 2022 report) including Hershey's, Theo, Trader Joe's, Godiva, Hu, and Equal Exchange.
