Many Nigerian Troops Got Missing Following Boko Haram Ambush

Posted: 14 Jul 2018 04:08 PM PDT

About twenty-three Nigerian soldiers are feared missing following an ambush by Boko Haram jihadists a convoy in the remote northeast of the country, said military and civilian vigilante sources on Saturday.

"Up until now 23 troops have not been accounted for. They include five officers and 18 soldiers," a military officer in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"They came under attack from Boko Haram terrorists in Balagallaye village in the Boboshe area outside Bama," the officer disclosed.

The officer also said that on Friday afternoon the soldiers had received a report that "around 100 terrorists" had gathered in Boboshe and that the "troops mobilised to fight them".

"Only three vehicles have made it back to Bama, the remaining eight and scores of soldiers are still missing. Their fate is still unclear," he said.

"We lost eight vehicles. That's a lot," the officer added.

A member of the civilian militia confirmed the officer's account, saying that "dozens" of soldiers are still missing.

"It is not known if they escaped into the bush, were killed or captured," he said.

"You know it is now rainy season and the roads are water-logged. The convoy got stuck in the mud and Boko Haram opened fire. It was a perfect ambush and the soldiers were on the defensive," he said.

"So far three vehicles have returned. The other eight have either been destroyed or captured by Boko Haram."

The group's Islamist insurgency has devastated the region since 2009, leaving at least 20,000 dead, displacing more than two million others and triggering a humanitarian crisis.

Despite persistent attacks, President Muhammadu Buhari maintains that Nigeria is in a "post-conflict stabilisation phase".

The former military ruler came to power three years ago on a promise to defeat Boko Haram, which is aligned to the Islamic State group and threatens security in the Lake Chad region.

But while there have been clear military gains since a counter-insurgency was launched in 2015, suicide bombings and raids remain a constant threat, particularly to civilians.

Fayose Casts His Vote, Speaks On Security And PDP’s Performance

Posted: 14 Jul 2018 08:13 AM PDT

Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the outgoing Governor of Ekiti State, has accused security agencies of hijacking the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election.

According to the PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Fayose accused Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress of using security apparatus for party gains. However the source said they has not witnessed any large scale manipulations or harassment by security officials at the different polling units visited.

The governor said this after casting his vote at polling unit 1, St. David Primary School, Afao.

He arrived the unit at about 1:15 p.m.
While describing them as "enemy of Nigeria," he accused the security officers of making several arrests of PDP members.

He said his party, PDP, will win the election no matter what.

Mr Fayose's deputy, Olusola Eleka, is the candidate of the PDP. His main challenger is ex-governor Kayode Fayemi of the APC.

Watch video of Mr. Fayose's interview with the PREMIUM TIMES below:

"This is a national disgrace…national disaster and there is danger ahead. Remember we raised all these issues. As I speak to you, thugs are snatching ballot boxes everywhere under the cover of the police. And what they call see and buy money politics is thriving everywhere with the police and civil defence giving sides to the people who are paying so that they can buy the voters.

"This is a national disaster and I raised all these alarms that this election may be marred by violence and that is exactly what is happening. In almost all local government, PDP chieftains are being arrested – council chairmen, House of Representative members… majority of my people are being arrested. My Chief of Staff is in detention. He was arrested about an hour ago," the governor said.

However PREMIUM TIMES has said they have not been able to verify most of the arrests mentioned by Mr Fayose as at the time of this report.

Mr Fayose said that such situation could thrive because the "wicked" are in authority.

For their role in the ongoing election, he described security operatives as enemies of Nigeria.

"We fight corruption but wrong people in authority is the worst thing that can happen. When the wicked are in authority this is what you see.

"If this is the sample of what will happen in 2019, I think it's a lost ground and a hopeless expectation.

"I want to say very expressly that the security agencies are the enemies of this nation. They have taken over the election from INEC. They are not picking calls.

When asked about his health, he said, "it is getting better. It is my duty to vote"

"Ekiti people were prepared for this election; but Ekiti people were contesting with the security operatives."

On card reader, he said there have been complaints in over half of the polling units in the state.

"Do you want to believe that card readers are not functioning in more than 50 per cent of the polling units," he questioned.

Despite the challenges, Mr Fayose said he is confident his party will win the election.

Serious Tension In Ekiti As over 667,270 Voters Gun For Fayose's Deputy

Posted: 14 Jul 2018 07:37 AM PDT

About six black spots where possible violence may erupt in today's governorship election in Ekiti State, has been identified by Election monitors, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG).

Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, the chairperson of the group has warned against possible outbreak of violence in the identified areas of Ado-Ekiti the state capital. The identified flash points are; Efon-Alaaye, Oye, Isan, Ire, and Ikole, and it has urged the security agencies to take full charge.

According to the Nation Newspaper, the other areas the group also identified as possible violence flash points includes; Dalimore, Ejigbo Junction, Fajuyi area, Ajilosun and Odo-Ado, all in the heart of the city.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, is a native of Isan-Ekiti. Oye is the home town of Senator Ayo Arise, who has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC.

Ire is the home town of former House of Representatives member, Bimbo Daramola, who was harassed along with his octogenarian father during the 2014 poll. During that previous election, votes from Efon Council were cancelled because of crisis.

Also, PDP and APC leaders acknowledged the tension in Ikere, the home town of the PDP flag bearer, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, which has been polarised by partisan interests of indigenes.

No fewer than four governorship candidates, including Olusola, Abiodun Aluko and Bisi Omoyeni, are from the ancient town.

The TMG chairperson however said:

"The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should ensure that the election is free, fair and conclusive.

"Also, there should be timely deployment of election materials at the polling unit to avoid voters being apprehensive."

She adviced politicians to eschew bitterness so as to reduce the tension and allow the people to choose their next governor without resorting to violence and disruptions.

In her view, the poll should not be a do-or-die affair.

Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi also added:

"TMG calls on politicians to abide by the rules and regulations of the electoral process and abstain from monetary inducement to avoid chaos that usually occurs at polling units.

"They should refrain from inciting their supporters to engage in electoral malpractices and violence. They should, instead, mobilise and encourage their supporters to exercise their franchise by coming out to vote the candidate of their choice."

Meanwhile the Deputy Inspector General of Police, the (DIG) Operations, Mr. Habilal Joshak, who has been put in charge of security for the Ekiti Election, has said;

"We won't allow anybody to go to the polling booth with armed men, this is a breach of the Electoral Act.

"We have contacted them and they have to be here before election commences. This election must not be compromised. They will be documented and whoever defies this will be sanctioned, because they have been contacted", he warned.

"If you cast your votes, you can keep a distance and protect your votes, but if you snatch the ballot, we will cut off your hands, if you run with it, we will stop your legs.

"Our duty is to secure not only the electoral materials but also all the citizens. We are going to be professional and watchful, because we don't want to be bedeviled with cases of hooliganism, ballot snatching and hate speeches before, during and after this election", he said.
