Gov. Ortom Finally Dumps APC

Posted: 16 Jul 2018 04:07 PM PDT

Samuel Ortom

The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom said he has finally ceased to be a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following what he called "a red card" given to him.

Ortom made this known, Monday in Makurdi shortly after swearing in a new Special Adviser on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Jerome Shimbe who replaced Mr Titus Zam, sacked on July 8.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria NAN, the Governor said that, the red card from APC would enable him to join any political party that has an ideology worthy of being adopted by his administration.

Mr. Ortom also stated that the dysfunctional relationship between him and the party under which he contested the 2015 governorship election in the state has left him without a party.

It could be recalled that the governor partially dissolved his cabinet last week, retaining four out of the 16 commissioners and seven out of 19 Special Advisers.

However, the Governor did not give any reason for dissolving his cabinet, it was reliably gathered that the sudden cabinet reshuffle might not be unconnected with the friction between him and the APC leader in the state, Sen. George Akume.

Governor Ortom also said that the appointment of Shimbe was based on his impeccable character and proven track record of service.

He advised the new adviser to strive to justify the confidence reposed in him and open his doors to all indigenes seeking for assistance from him regardless of their political affiliation.

Responding, Shimbe thanked the governor for finding him worthy of the appointment while pledging to ensure that the governor succeeds in all his endeavours.

Ekiti State Would Have Been On Fire If NBC Did Not Shut Ekiti Broadcasting Corporation – Femi Falana On Ekiti Election

Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:27 PM PDT

Falana
Femi Falana SAN

Mr.Femi Falana, SAN, Human Rights Activist and Lawyer, on today Monday, commended the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC over the shutting of Ekiti Broadcasting Corporation.

Falana said this while speaking with Punch, that Ekiti State would have been in deep crisis after the election if the NBC  had not shut the Ekiti State Broadcasting Corporation on Saturday.

It could be recalled that earlier last week, prior to the election on Saturday, the Ekiti Broadcasting Corporation was fined N500, 000 for unprofessional conducts by NBC and on Saturday, it was shut down after Governor Ayodele Fayose went on air announcing the results of the election as they come in favour of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and the state deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

"The NBC deserves commendation for closing down the Ekiti State television and radio stations where false results were announced by Governor Ayo Fayose. But for the closure, the state would have been engulfed in the violence of unimaginable proportion.

Falana however condemned the manner in which voters were induced, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to take precaution to avoid a repeat in the forthcoming Osun state election.

He, also, advised Ekiti State Governor-elect, Kayode Fayemi to use his office to end thuggery and impunity, which he said the state had been associated with in recent times.

"No doubt, the financial inducement has substantially eroded the credibility of the election. The governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, owes the Ekiti people a duty to end inducement, thuggery, and impunity with which Ekiti State has been associated in recent times.

"In particular, the electorate should be enlightened to distance themselves from electoral fraud and allied offences. The open purchase of votes displayed during the governorship elections in Edo, Anambra and Ondo states was repeated in Ekiti State on Saturday.

"I will like to call on INEC to put an end to the inducement of voters during the forthcoming Osun State governorship election," Falana reiterated.

Bola Tinubu Praises Fayose, Eleka Following Fayemi's Victory In Ekiti

Posted: 16 Jul 2018 04:59 AM PDT

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has commended Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Saturday's election in Ekiti, Prof Kolapo Olusola Eleka.

Asiwaju however siad, that the APC candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, won the election, Fayose and Eleka deserved commendation as they did not attempt to subvert the will of the people or plunge the state into violence.

The APC leader, made this known in a statement through his media aide, Tunde Rahman on Sunday.

He said,

"I would be remiss if I did not say a good word about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof. Olusola Kolapo Eleka.

"He conducted a tough and energetic campaign. He wanted this seat but, in the end, he did not resort to violence to get his way.

"He allowed the people to make their own decision and for his adherence to this democratic principle, he should be recognised.

"The same must be said of Gov. Ayo Fayose. He tried his utmost to bring his candidate to victory but he did not cross the line by trying to subvert the will of the people through violent means."

Tinubu in the statement titled "Ekiti Election: A Victory for the People", lauded Ekiti people for throwing their weight behind the APC and its candidate, Dr Fayemi.

He therefore urged the governor-elect to justify the confidence Ekiti people reposed in him.

"Dr Fayemi must keep in remembrance that the people have placed their future in his safekeeping and he must justify their trust in him by doing all he can do to advance their welfare.

"I'm confident that Fayemi will keep faith with the programmes and policies of our party in order to improve the lives of the people of Ekiti.

"I know Fayemi will establish an all-inclusive government that involves all stakeholders in his administration and in the governance of the state."

He noted that, "In Ekiti, a chapter has closed and a new one has begun. This was not done by contrivance or artifice, nor was it the product of intimidation or improper influence.

"This came about because it was the will of the people of Ekiti as expressed and manifested in the conduct of a free and fair election in that state. In voting as they did, the people thus voted for themselves.

"Here, we must congratulate Dr Kayode Fayemi and our party, the APC, for the successful campaign that was run and for the confidence the people of Ekiti have shown in transferring the mandate to govern them into our hands."

Tinubu added, "Dr Fayemi is a man of integrity and his government will not be one of recrimination. It is a government of the people and as such will focus its attention on helping the people, not suppressing yesterday's political opponents.

"I urge Gov. Fayose and Prof. Kolapo Eleka, as prominent citizens and leaders of Ekiti, to move forward in that same spirit. Let there be an orderly transition from the outgoing to the incoming government.

"Last and most importantly, let us commend the people of Ekiti. Casting aside all the dire predictions, they conducted themselves with the patience, sobriety and collective wisdom befitting the moment.

"Instead of turning things upside down, they turned to peace and mutual respect for each other as well as respect for the democratic process.

"Above all else, the election was your election and yesterday was your day! With the choice that you have made, may tomorrow also be your best future."
