Crisis Imminent In Ekiti House Of Assembly As APC Lawmakers Reject Long Adjournment

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Imminent crisis is in the offing as Ekiti State House of Assembly  APC Lawmakers rejects the long adjournment of legislative business to October by the majority Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the House.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) legislators, who are the minority in the House described the long adjournment as not in the interest of the people of the state who elected them and also illegal.

According to the members of APC in the House, led by the Minority Leader, Chief Gboyega Aribisogan (Ikole Constituency 1), who alleged that the long adjournment was masterminded by Governor Ayo Fayose in a bid to emasculate the legislative arm.

Other APC members of the Ekiti parliament are Mr. Sunday Akinniyi (Ikere Constituency 1) and Mr. Adeniran Alagbada (Ise/Orun Constituency).

Aribisogan, Akinnyi and Alagbada defected from the PDP at different times and joined the APC over internal crisis that rocked their former party.

The twenty-three PDP legislators led by Speaker Kola Oluwawole at a plenary on Tuesday adjourned sitting till October 8 in protest over the governorship election result and alleged harassment of Fayose and PDP members by security agencies.

Mr. Tunji Akinyele, Leader of Business in the House, who moved the motion for the adjournment, said that this became imperative due to the political harassment of members by security agents.

According to the DailyPost, Chief Aribisogan however said the APC Assembly members are ready for legislative business, calling on the Police and Department of State Services (DSS) to give the minority lawmakers security anytime they decide to perform their constitutional duties.

Aribisogan said:

"That long adjournment was illegal and even the plenary held on Tuesday was illegal because it was Governor Fayose that directed the Speaker to hold that plenary without notice to all members.

"It is unfortunate that we still have this executive recklessness going on in Ekiti State. Maybe the Speaker has forgotten that we now have members of APC in the House because we were neither notified nor consulted.

"That is why we have resolved that we are not going on recess. We are open for our normal legislative business from Mondays to Fridays and we are calling on security agencies so that we can perform our constitutional duties without let or hindrance.

"We are not on recess and we are calling on Ekiti people who have one business or the other in the Assembly to come and meet us.

"They (PDP legislators) are listening to the advice of one man who, perhaps has ordered the Speaker to suspend legislative activities."

When asked whether three APC members can form a quorum to perform legislative duties, Aribisigan replied: "On our own, we are not on recess; it is only when you are going for plenary that you need a quorum but we can sit at parliamentary, committee and constituency
meetings."

Akinniyi said: "It was an act of arrogance to have proceeded on an illegal long adjournment. It is against the rule of the House because there are two parties in the House.

"It appears the Speaker is living in a fool's paradise without giving notice to all members of the Assembly. We APC members of Ekiti State House of Assembly are alive to our responsibilities to legislate for the good of our people and perform other oversight functions.

"For somebody to listen to the instruction of a governor who is in the forest to be controlling the Assembly. What they have done is highly illegal and we have resolved that the legislative business will continue.

"We have duly informed security agencies that we (APC House members) are ready to continue with our constitutional functions so that anytime we are there, they will give us security.

"The minority members will resume office anytime we want because we are not on recess and no individual, no matter how powerful, can stop us from performing our lawful duties."

HURIWA Calls For Cancellation Of Ekiti Poll, Demand Sack Of INEC Boss, Mohmood

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 05:26 AM PDT

HURIWA

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been called upon by Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Tuesday to cancel the Saturday's governorship election held in Ekiti State.

HURIWA centered its call on what it termed the "overwhelming evidence of monetary inducements and the failure of officials to stop same."

The Association, in a statement made available to the Press, signed jointly by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf, the Association insisted that the alleged failure of INEC in the conduct of the Ekiti election was an indication that the electoral body lacks the capacity and credibility to conduct 2019 polls.

HURIWA warned further, that if the alleged "incompetent and compromised hierarchy" of INEC under Professor Yakubu Mohmood and the "heavily compromised security chiefs are left intact to oversee the 2019 general election then the national security of the nation maybe imperilled even as vote-buying may spark off widespread riots."

The Association's statement further reads;

"The legitimacy of the Ekiti governorship election is vitiated by widespread irregularities characterized by open vote buying by political parties with the highest bidder getting the highest number of choreographed votes. The conduct of the electoral panel and the security forces during the election can at best be described as treasonous and vexatious. We encouraged the candidate of the PDP who was robbed in a daylight robbery to proceed to the election tribunal immediately and we advise the judiciary to decide this matter in the best interest of justice and avoid being compromised or bribed".

"We are embittered that even when there are overwhelming proofs of vote-buying by politicians especially by the party affiliated to the central government which reportedly got security backups to perpetrate these illegalities and electoral malfeasance, INEC still proceeded to even doctor the overall results of the election just to ensure that a pre-determined and federally anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress is produced as winner.

"The open and naked show of shame continued with the primitive display of arrogance by the presidency and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which specifically celebrated this infamy done to Ekiti voters by INEC by announcing on its Twitter handle that governor Ayodele Fayose who is a vocal critique of President Buhari would be dealt with over some allegations that in the face of the law are still mere conjectures until a competent court of law reaches a determination. The barrage of celebratory attacks emerging from the presidency shows that the Ekiti State governorship election was traded off by INEC and procured by the presidency."

HURIWA also called for the immediate change of the current hierarchies of INEC and security agencies, noting that failure to do such will push the nation into a state of war.

"We are worried that mob justice may become legitimate, should politicians try to play on the gullibility and government's imposed poverty, to try to buy votes. This evil tendency would be resisted and we fear that this may precipitate a greater national security instability. INEC chairman must be sacked even as all the heads of security must be swiftly changed to bring in patriots and committed unbiased Nigerians to head these agencies," the statement added.

Police Service Commission Bemoan Ekiti Election, Condemn Rigging During Poll

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 04:45 AM PDT

The All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has come under the x-ray of the Police Service Commission, PSC as it speaks on allegations of electoral malpractices perpetrated by in some polling units during Ekiti Governorship election.

The commission through it's Spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Tuesday, revealed that they received 35 complaints of vote-buying, confirming few cases of disorderliness at some polling units during the Saturday poll.

The commission's statement reads;

"Our team monitored the conduct of police officers in 45 polling units in all the three senatorial zones of the state covering 14 out of the 16 local government areas of the state.

"They received 35 complaints from the voters, party agents and observers through dedicated lines earlier circulated to both the electorate and party agents within Ekiti and outside the state.

"Some of the messages centred on vote -buying, financial inducement and restiveness in some polling units. Specifically, there was a case of the arrest and detention of party agents at Aramoko Police Division which was resolved with the intervention of the commission.

"In cases where a party agent violated the electoral law, the commission advised the police to allow the person to carry out his duty after which he could be arrested after the election.

"The commission wishes to advise that the police, in such instances where an agent commits an offence, he/she be allowed to carry out his legal duties and be arrested at the end of the voting, counting and signing of the result sheet in order to avoid sending a wrong impression that the security agencies may be biased."
