Ekweremadu Tell His Side Of Story On EFCC Probe

Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:42 PM PDT

Ekweremadu
Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, The Deputy Senate President of Nigeria

Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, The Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, yesterday revealed what transpired between him and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his invitation on Wednesday.

The Deputy Senate President,  said it was true that he told the EFCC that he was not feeling well, but not based on a fresh list of properties shown to him.

He said he was examined by EFCC doctor and it was confirmed he was unwell.

Ekweremadu is being probed by the EFCC for allegedly acquiring about 60 properties with funds suspected to be from illegal means.

Recall, that the Federal Government had already filed a motion in a Federal High Court for an interim forfeiture order on 22 of the assets.

Although he appeared for a second round of investigation on Wednesday, he faulted media reports on what transpired.

The Deputy Senate President, opened up on his date with the EFCC in  a statement through his Special Adviser on Media,  Uche Anichukwu.

The statement said: "My attention has been drawn to false reports in some national dailies that the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, developed high blood pressure in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (upon alleged presentation to him of a fresh set of purported 'hidden properties' supposedly acquired by him. There is no truth to this propaganda.

"It would be recalled that operatives of the EFCC and men of the Nigeria Police laid siege to his residence at about 6am on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, requesting him to report at its headquarters at 10am the same Tuesday. However, no letter of invitation was delivered to him until around 9am of that day.

"Since the siege would not allow him to honour the belated invitation the same day, he, as a law-abiding citizen, wrote to the EFCC to request another date, hence the rescheduled appointment of Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

"Senator Ekweremadu honoured the 10am appointment on the fixed date and left in the evening of the same day when he was granted bail on self-recognisance, with an understanding that he would report at the EFCC Office at 10am the next day for a continuation of the interview.

"He reported at the EFCC Office on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 10am as scheduled, but informed them that he was not feeling well, a fact the EFCC's doctor confirmed.

"He was then allowed to leave to see his doctor and it was agreed that a new date would be fixed for the continuation of the interview.

"The office feels compelled by the mischief and orchestrated media trial to put the facts straight on this particular issue."

In suit FHC/ABJ/CS/284/2018, the Federal Government, through the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, had traced 22 assets to Ekweremadu.

The said assets were suspected to have been acquired through illicit funds.

The properties are at No. 11, Evans Enwerem Street, Apo Legislative Quarters, Apo, Abuja;  Plot 2633 Kyami, Abuja; Housing Estate (Plot 1106 CRD, Cadastral Zone 07-07, Lugbe, Abuja; Plot 2782 Asokoro Extension, Abuja, and    Houses at Citi Park Estate, Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Traceable assets of Ekweremadu in the United State include  4507, Stella Street, Bellavida Estate Kissime, Florida, USA; 2747 Club Cortile Circle, Kissime, Florida, USA and 2763 Club Cortile Circle, Kissime, Florida, USA.

The properties abroad in London include Flat 4 Varsity Court, Harmer Street, WIH 4NW, London; and 52 Ayleston Avenue, NW6 7AB, London.

Comrade Timi Frank Has Dumped The APC

Posted: 03 Aug 2018 04:28 PM PDT

Comrade Timi Frank

Comrade Timi Frank, the ex-Deputy National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC),  has finally dumped the party, assuring Nigerians that he will continue to speak against injustice, intimidation, political persecution, criminalisation of all opponents of the ruling party.

However Comrade Frank, who was silent on whether he is joining another political party soon, said he is ready again to contribute his quota to the progress and development of Nigeria by joining hands with progressive forces to rescue it from collapse, poverty, corruption, tyranny, ignominy and undemocratic leadership.

According to the Vanguard Newspaper, Frank in a statement released on Friday morning, said he thanked his supporters, both home and abroad, for their encouragement during his stay in the APC which he said has continued to be a soothing balm to him "under this arid regime and also to inform them of my decision, after extensive reflection and consultations, to leave the APC and to commence afresh the struggle to reestablish the rule of law, respect for the fundamental human rights of Nigerians and the restoration of justice, fairness and equity in the conduct of affairs in this country, irrespective of the personality that may be at the helm of affairs at any given time."

The Bayelsa born politician recalled that when the APC was formed in 2014, he was among the early joiners also narrated his regret in the party.

"I was one of the early joiners from the PDP, having been dissatisfied by the unsustainable trajectory of the last administration which I felt no longer possessed the political will to make Nigeria and her democracy reflect the lofty dreams of its founding fathers which among others was to unleash the untapped potentials of the Nigerian citizenry, especially her vibrant youth population ever eager to take their place in the economic and socio-political advancement of the country.

"My decision to join the APC then was based on its promise that things were going to change for the better. Regrettably however, rather than lead the country with egalitarian principles that would under-guide the nations quest for development and progress in the mould of her counterparts in the international community, the country has taken a deep plunge backwards under the leadership of the APC, with high level of tyranny, victimization, harassment, and political desperation, we thought had been consigned to the era of military dictatorship in the country, again rearing its odious head.

Although, I am a direct victim of injustice and intolerance in the party but I continued to speak out because I have zero tolerance for injustice anywhere. "While I consider the APC as a failed project, I am ready again to stoop and contribute my humble quota to the progress and development of this country by joining hands with progressive forces to rescue it from collapse, poverty, corruption, tyranny, ignominy and undemocratic leadership. "Let it be clear that I am stepping aside from the APC to be the voice for the majority of voiceless Nigerians who daily suffer the bad policies and highhandedness of this administration. I want to continue my fight to ensure a better Nigeria, where injustice, corruption, killings and bloodletting will cease to exist .

"I want to make it unequivocally clear that I am returning to continue my struggle against forces who are bent on ruining the economy and governance of this country through lack of vision, ineptitude, wickedness, and outright disregard for the welfare and security of the ordinary Nigerian.

This I hope to do until Nigeria is rid of injustice, intimidation, political persecution, criminalization of all opponents of the ruling party, and open attacks using the nation's security agencies. Nigerians need a voice to speak for them in this evil days and I want to be that voice.

"Besides, I want to put on record my deep respect for the former Governor of Edo State and National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, especially during the days of his comradeship where he fought and got a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers under the Obasanjo administration.

However, it is most unfortunate that Oshiomhole who was once a voice for the oppressed workers and masses in the country is today serving the worst party in the history of Nigeria. Even though my respected senior colleague in the struggle has chosen to turn a blind eye to the pathetic plight of the Nigerian workers, including government's refusal to accede to their request for a new minimum wage in the last three years, I will continue to speak for the voiceless in this country."

What Saraki Has Done To Himself – Senator Adamu

Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:13 AM PDT

Senator Abdullahi Adamu

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, (APC-Nasarawa) has faulted the defection of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The Lawmaker, who made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, said, "Saraki had stepped on banana peel and should be prepared to bear the consequences of his action.

"If Saraki knows political intricacies and the political terrain or the path where the banana peel in political landscape is, he will be more cautious.

"The way he is going now, he has obviously stepped on banana peel and only God knows how far he will slip.

"I will not pretend. I think he made a mistake and he took a wrong decision. He will have stories to tell along the line.

"It is not the best he could have done. He had a duty to his father to keep the flag of the family flying, but the way he is going, I do not think he is doing that."

According to the Daily Post, the Lawmaker then urged Saraki to step down to avert the consequences, adding that "he should honourably return the crown or be ready to bear the consequences."

Adamu, who is the Head of pro-Buhari Support Group in the Senate, vowed that with the defection, it would not be business as usual.

He however explained that "the defection of Saraki and the other lawmakers is a game changer.

"We expect them to do it amicably and peacefully. They should make sure they do not run away with our crown.

"If they think they will go and nothing will happen and that it will be business as usual, then they need to think again.

"I will not say whether we will take steps or not take steps. We hope that between now and resumption of Senate plenary, more events will unfold. We do not want to be in a hurry to speculate."

Adamu, however, said that if Saraki insists on leading a Senate with majority of lawmakers from the APC, there would be repercussions.

When reminded that Saraki did not do anything constitutionally wrong by defecting, and that there was a precedence where former Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, defected but remained the Speaker, Adamu said, "It will not happen this time. We are more educated on the rules now."

On the gale of defections from the ruling party, Adamu said he didn't want any member to leave the party again, noting, however, that it was a free world and everyone was at liberty to join the party of his or her choice.

Court Order, INEC Chairman Appeals Against Arrest Warrant

Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:05 AM PDT

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman

According to Agency Report, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has filed an appeal challenging the arrest warrant issued against him by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu in the appeal, is challenging the validity of the arrest warrant that was issued against him by the court.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the appeal filed by Adegbeoyega Awomolo (SAN), counsel to the appellant, was made available to Newsmwn on Thursday in Abuja.

Yakubu maintained that he could not be arrested on the basis of a bench warrant that was legally defective.

Read Also: HURIWA Calls For Cancellation Of Ekiti Poll, Demand Sack Of INEC Boss, Mohmood

He urged the Court of Appeal to invoke its powers and void the arrest order made by Justice Stephen Pam.

Mr Pam had in a bench ruling on Wednesday ordered the police to arrest and produce Mr Yakubu in court on August 8 to face contempt charges.

The order followed Mr Yakubu's failure to honour a summons the court issued for him to appear in respect of a suit involving the Anambra chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The INEC chairman had between July 5 and July 10 allegedly failed to honour the court's summons to defend a contempt proceeding.

The case was initiated against him by Ejike Oguebego, the chairman of PDP, and Chuks Okoye, the Legal Adviser of the party, in Anambra.

The Federal High Court had ordered the INEC Chairman to appear to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for refusing to recognise the Oguebego-led faction of the party in line with the judgment of the Supreme Court.

The applicants had prayed the court to jail the chairman for disregarding the judgment.

Mr Yakubu, however, denied disobeying any order of court, adding that he was denied fair hearing by the trial court.

The INEC boss said there was no evidence that any court summons was enrolled and served him.

He argued that the lower court erred in law when it ordered that he should be arrested for allegedly disobeying its order.

Prof. Yakubu therefore, urged the appellate court to hold that the conditions necessary to warrant the issuance of bench warrant had not been met. (NAN)
