2019 Presidency: Atiku’s Incursion Into South-West Rattles APC

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:33 PM PDT

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, PDP Presidential candidate

Atiku's penetration into South-West rattles the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors and leaders in the South-West, who are currently strategising on ways to mitigate the incursion of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, into the zone ahead of February 16, 2019 election.

According to New Telegraph, the APC, which is in control of the six states in the South-West, is frantically pushing to put the post-primary crisis in some states behind it, come together in the coming days and eke out a winning strategy that will guarantee the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the PDP candidate.

A leader in the ruling APC, who chose to be anonymous, said: "The Atiku challenge is real and we can't afford to take it for granted because South-West is where the swing votes reside. "As we speak, the signals on the field are not cheering in almost all the six states of the South-West and that is why it is necessary for the party and the presidency to summon everyone and give a marching order on how to prosecute the elections.

"The reverse in the order of crisis we are having in the South-West is unfortunate. PDP used to be the party in crisis before now, but they are gradually shaking off that nomenclature. Currently, all is not well with our party in Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Oyo and perhaps Osun.

"Unfortunately, this division is beginning to create in-roads for PDP and Atiku in the zone. His offer of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has also emboldened his campaign in the zone.

We can't afford to sleep on them because we learnt they are meeting different people and groups in the zone." Meanwhile, one of the governors in the APC controlled state of the South-West is said to have warned traditional rulers in his state against partisan politics, stating that they are royal fathers and not politicians.

It was gathered that the governor gave the directive to the traditional rulers following a proposed courtesy visit of some PDP leaders to select traditional rulers in the South-West next month.

However, barring any last minute change, leaders of the PDP in the South- West are set to converge on Lagos today for a stakehold-ers' meeting.

Aside from using the meeting to appraise the reports of primary elections conducted in the zone, the gathering is expected to chart a course for the 2019 election, appoint campaign teams and also deliberate on the proposal of Atiku to offer the zone the SGF slot.

A source within the zonal executive of the party said: "We are meeting in Lagos on Friday and we will be deliberating on many crucial matters, including the SGF offer by the presidential candidate.

"I don't want to pre-empt the meeting, but I know that the zone will still demand for more positions from the candidate. We have the second largest voting population after the North-West and I think that should be key to any form of negotiation," he said.

Obasanjo Names His Friends, See Who They Are!

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:52 PM PDT

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, on Thursday, insisted that only committed, dedicated and patriotic Nigerians are his friends.

OBJ made this declaration while speaking as the chairman at an event tagged "85-60-50: Hanging of Stethoscope", organised in honour of Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe to mark his 85th birthday, 60 years in medical practice and 50 years as Professor of Medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan.

The program which was held at the International Conference Centre (UI) was to signify the official retirement of the emeritus professor from public service, Daily Post reports.

The former President stressed that the above-mentioned qualities were those qualities of his friends, adding that only the likes of Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe displayed such greater commitment, dedication and patriotism to making a positive impact on the people.

Obasanjo while describing Akinkugbe as "A rare breed and one of God's special gifts to Nigeria and an epitome of the finest tradition of African nobility", emphasized that those he calls his friend are "committed Nigerians, dedicated human beings who can be trusted at every time".

He added that, "We thank God for your illustrious life, exemplary leadership, ardent patriotism and life-long devotion to the cause of upholding the highest standards of conduct in your profession and within our society. You are one of God's special gifts to our nation, a rare breed who epitomises the finest tradition of African nobility".

Obasanjo said, "We cannot stop appreciating God for giving to the world an intellectual giant, a world-renowned clinician of whom the nation is justifiably proud. We, your friends are proud of you, your achievements and contributions to the medical profession and to our nation."

"We salute your numerous contributions to the development of the country in medical practice, governance, business, education, community development and traditional institutions. As it has turned out, your medical calling has enabled you to save many lives. In your life and work, you have combined your African heritage with international best practices to enrich mankind as a whole".

Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole who was represented by Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi said the Emeritus Professor Akinkugbe was a man in his own class, saying, "Akinkugbe stands out clearly as a teacher, clinician, clinical administrator, father, husband and mentor.

" In my tribute to him at 80, I likened him to the proverbial elephant touched by six blind men and each gave a different but correct account of what he felt. The elephant is still marching on but has decided to hang the stethoscope. I have never heard of this before and would not know if anyone has ever done so.He could as well be the first to do so. That is OOA for you. Always creating ripples and new things. He is one of Nigeria's most respected and distinguished academics and physicians".

Guest Lecturer, Sir Eldryd Parry of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, London School of Hygienes and Tropical Medicine, while speaking on the topic entitled, "Africa's Health: Matters Arising", alerted that more than two-thirds of Nigerians risk spending their lifetime below the poverty line.

He said, "The poor have not experienced significant growth in their average living standards despite some moderate rise in GDP per capita over the past two decades. Thus, I found growing evidence suggesting a rising deep level of deprivation in Nigeria, rendering more than two-thirds of the poor at risk of spending their lifetimes below the poverty line.

"The clear implication is that growth has not been sufficient nor has it demonstrated the potential to help the poor break free from poverty", saying, "this calls for policies that not only bring about a rise in GDP but also boost the income growth of the poor. Like Brazil, Nigeria can achieve significant poverty reduction without absolute reliance on economic growth by reducing its two-digit inflation rate and substantially expanding its social security and social assistance transfers. Finally, improvements in life expectancy as a health outcome can also improve the chances of the poor of escaping poverty: longer lifespans could shrink the gap between life."

Akinkugbe while speaking declared that one of the reasons he decided to hang his stethoscope is, "that I don't want to be a patient in my own clinic."

Eminent personalities at the event included the Ooni of Ife; Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi who was represented by Asoya of Isoya Ile-Ife, Oba Adedini Muraina and Elejesi of Ife kingdom, Oba Babatunde Tokunbo, the Osemawe of Ondo, Dr Victor Kiladejo, Lady Helen Parry, former vice-chancellors, University of Ibadan Professor Ayodele Falase and Professor Kayode Oyediran, former governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and Chairman, African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu.

Others are: Oba Otudeko, Professor Bolanle Awe, Dr Wale Babalakin (SAN), Chief Ayo Banjo, Prince Bayo Oyero, Brigadier Oluwole Rotimi, Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi, Olori Jumoke Agbede, Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi, Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge, Mr Folu Olamiti and Professor Femi Mimiko.

2019 Presidency: See What Will Happen If PDP Wins Election – Amaechi

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 11:59 AM PDT

Rotimi Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation,  and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has told Nigerians that it would be disastrous if the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, returns to power in 2019.

Amaechi said the party was "desperate and hungry for power.''

He made this statement at a Special Town Hall Meeting on Infrastructure organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture in Ibadan, Sahara Reporters, reports.

The Minister said the PDP, while in power, turned the nation to a "feeding bottle" by abandoning critical infrastructure and " sucking" the economy for personal gains.

The minister urged Nigerians to resist the PDP by voting for Buhari and ensuring that they guarded their votes during the 2019 general elections.

Rotimi Amaechi also said that the ruling party was prepared for an open debate with the PDP on the successes recorded, especially on infrastructural development.

"We are ready for the PDP candidate to confront us with what they achieved in 16 years and compare them to what we have done in just three and half years.

"We are open for the debate, our achievements on infrastructure are there to showcase," he said.
The minister disclosed that the government was working hard to ensure the completion of Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail project by February 2019.

"We are working day and night on this project and we have started laying the tracks from Papalanto.

"I want to thank the people and the communities along the rail tracks for their cooperation because they have never given us trouble," he said.

Amaechi also said that after completing the Lagos-Ibadan section of the project, the focus would turn to the Lagos-Kano standard gauge.

Nigerian Army Identifies Grave Where Missing General Was Buried

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 10:34 AM PDT

Nigeria Army personnel on the grave site

The missing Army General Muhammed Alkali, has been found, but in a shallow grave.

Read below a report put together by the PREMIUM TIMES to learn more about the story:

The Nigerian Army said it has discovered a shallow grave where a missing major general, Muhammed Alkali, was buried after he was killed.

The army said the body was later exhumed and reburied somewhere else by the killers, according to the information provided to it by some of the arrested suspects.

According to the army, the shallow grave was confirmed by four independent sources in the community and also by sniffer dogs.

A PREMIUM TIMES correspondent who visited the area of the shallow grave reports that there is a distance of one kilometre between the main road and the location of the grave.

Mr Alkali was the immediate past chief of administration of the Nigerian Army. He was declared missing on September 3 when he was travelling from Abuja to Bauchi State. He is believed to have been killed by his abductors.
The Shallow grave
PREMIUM TIMES reported how the car of the missing general was found weeks ago in the community's pond after it was drained.

A blood-stained T-shirt, a boxer short and a pair of shoes believed to belong to the general were found in the car.

Since the discovery of the car, there have been fears the military could attack the community in retaliation.

A day after the car was found, the army cordoned off the Dura Du community and arrested 30 suspects in connection with the suspected murder of the general.

Apart from the discovery of the missing car, two other vehicles were also recovered from the pond.

Following the arrest of the 30 suspects, residents of the community fled for fear of military action but the army pledged to conduct the search with respect for human rights.

On Friday, a major general, B. A. Akinruluyo, the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division, Rukuba Barracks, narrated how the shallow grave was discovered.

"Please note that four different sources not known to each other at various times took us to the opened shallow grave where the senior officer was earlier buried but subsequently removed," he said.

"Furthermore, sniffer dogs that have been cultured with the personal effects of the senior officer led us to the same open shallow grave. That was the only grave we were led to by different people and sniffer dogs. We did not go to any other grave as the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence.

"Like I always say, the cordon and search operation is intelligence driven and that is why the operation has been conducted in line with international best practices and respect for human rights. This further explains why the (army) division did not clamp down on the entire community. Only the perpetrators are being targeted.

"At this point, let me reiterate that all the actors involved in this dastardly act who are still at large are known to us. All efforts are being made to get them arrested and be brought to justice as their photographs and personal details are with the relevant security agencies.

"The cordon and search operation conducted by own troops has really exposed the heinous crimes being committed by the few but fully supported and concealed by the entire community. I want to commend members of the public for their cooperation and still solicit for anyone with credible information on where the senior officer was reburied. It is the civic responsibility of the Dura-Du community to produce the corpse of the deceased senior officer and those who were involved in the killing of the senior officer.

"Finally, the division also wishes to emphasise its adherence to the principles and respect of human rights in the discharge of its constitutional roles. It further calls on everyone within its area of responsibility to remain vigilant and report any suspected breach of the peace to security agencies," the major general said.

See What Yoruba Youths Did To Fashola Over Comment On Buhari - 2019 Presidency

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 08:49 AM PDT

Babatunde Fashola(SAN)

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has been attacked by Yoruba Youth Council, (YYC), for his statement that President Muhammadu Buhari will return power to the region if they reelect him for a second term in 2019.

Fashola had made this statement while speaking at a special Town Hall Meeting on infrastructure organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture and the National Orientation Agency held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, called on the people of the South West to support Buhari's second term bid in order to regain power in 2023.

The YYC which is the umbrella body of the Yoruba Youths, described the Minister's call as absurd, adding that President Buhari has not done well to warrant another shot at the presidency, Daily Post reports.

This was contained in a statement signed by its National President, Eric Oluwole, and made available to newsmen on Friday.

The youths insisted that President Buhari had no solution to any of the problems confronting Nigeria as a nation.

The statement added, "Our attention has been drawn to a vague promise by a former Governor of Lagos State and current Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola during the special town hall meeting organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture and the National Orientation Agency recently, advising Yorubas especially the youths to vote for the incumbent president Mr Muhammad Buhari in the 2019 election so as to enable power shift to the south west in 2023.

"We observe with consternation that Mr Fashola, who is a beneficiary of the social economic crisis which the ruling elite has plunged the Nigerian youths could start serving as an adviser at this critical period if our nation's existence.

"Having been a beneficiary of Democratic rule since 1999, we will not forget the level of corruption perpetrated by the Minister when he was Governor of Lagos State as leaked by his predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on assumption to office.

"Yoruba youths also remember with consternation, the statements credited to Mr Fashola that Nigeria's power problems could be fixed in six months, three years of his reign has the minister in charge of power has not solved our perennial power problems.

"We want him and his likes who are feeding Nigerians with propaganda from the seat of power to know that the youths have learnt from history and will strive hard not to repeat the mistakes of the past in our resolve to revamp the economy of Nigeria.

"The same presidency Mr Fashola is promising Yoruba youth in 2023 is what the current Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige promised the South Easterners. Another attempt to perpetrate the ethnic division of the country?

"We want to say expressly that nothing can stop our collective resolve to ensure the restructuring of Nigeria in order to find solutions to myriads of problems facing our country.

"We again call on Presidential candidates who are committed to the restructuring agenda to show commitment by signing an agreement document to ensure restructuring of Nigeria within six months of their assumption to office.

"Time has come to protect our future and the youths shall do all we can to decide the fate of the 2019 election without leaving a stone," the statement said.

WAEC Certificate: Buhari Under Pressure As INEC Releases Names Of Presidential & NASS Candidates

Posted: 26 Oct 2018 06:57 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari

Buhari under serious pressure as the failure of Mr. President to submit his academic certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as required of candidates for the 2019 elections, has stirred reactions from Nigerians online.

Buhari only submitted an affidavit wherein he claimed that his credentials were with the Secretary of the Military Board, as the various presidential candidates' credentials were made available to reporters in Abuja, Thursday.

However, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar submitted all relevant documents, with a diploma in Law obtained in 1969 from the Ahmadu Bello University being his highest qualification.

On his part, Buhari, in the affidavit, said, "I am the above-named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military Board as of the time of this affidavit."

This has stirred divergent opinions from Nigerians on social media as many online users, questions why Buhari could not get his original WAEC certificate from military given that he is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

However, some online reactions has been put together here by the DAILY POST from Twitter as shown below:

@Yemifash " Buhari did not tender any academic record to become President, INEC conspired with APC to install a WAEC-LESS President. The whole world must see this, don't stop retweeting. "

@Dun1214 "This guy, Is he not the c-in-c now. So he cannot order them to produce it?

@RealAliyuyusuf "Leadership has nothing to do with certificate. Let's not use this as a means of a campaign, that would be too cheap. Its high time we come together to make Nigeria work again."

@Pearlss "How do u expect him to give what is not in existence? Simple !he does not have it. He commands all commendable in Nigeria and can't get hold of his WAEC papers? Vital one at that? Please!!!

@Okpakolaw "It surprises me how INEC had always qualified him for elections on affidavit alone. Where are the Certified True Copies! I hope that INEC will be bold enough to request for CTC and not rely on self-recognition."

@Dominic_ugo "WAEC certificate is not important. Have you not heard that Buhari recently bagged a Masters degree in Strategic Lifelessness from University of "white house, his Thesis titled how to destroy Nigeria economy was personally supervised by Donald Trump."

@ShettimaNIS "Leadership has nothing to do with academic excellence, gentleman next time be more objective, he is the savior Nigeria ever had, May God save your people from you."

@Abatanbabtundde "My father was a retired Major though late now but if u ask me of any of his certificates, within 2hrs I will produce all the original certificates. My father served the same Nigeria Army that clueless Buhari served."

@Edmundobiri "It is very obvious that some are actually fully above the law. To get a normal desk job in this country, if you don't produce your WAEC result, you can forget about it. But a whole "president" cannot even give us his own."

@brave_miracle "INEC should stop him from contesting if they truly know their job."

@Ojebutudollar "Yet he wants to prosecute Ademola Adeleke who tendered his despite that he didn't pass his papers. Buharists only forge theirs, They are certificate forgers and have nothing to tender. What a scammer Government and President!" INEC Releases Names Of Presidential & NASS Candidates.
