Posted: 09 Nov 2018 04:00 PM PST

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has finally published the name of Senator Hope Uzodimma as governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo State.

The Senator's name was pasted at the INEC office along Port Harcourt road in Owerri, with Akaolisa Cyprain Okechukwu, as his running mate.

Uzodimma's name was displayed at about 07:52 as the authentic governorship flag-bearer of the APC.

This is coming about 10 hours after INEC had pasted 67 other governorship names of various political parties, excluding that of APC.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that INEC did not add the name of the governorship candidate of APC, in Imo state on the list of governorship candidates it published on Friday.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Emeka Ihedioha and 66 others were on the list, while that of the APC was discovered missing.

Senate, South East Governors Reject Police Claim On Ekweremadu

Posted: 09 Nov 2018 11:45 AM PST

Senator Ike Ekweremadu

Governors of the South east states have condemned the "attempted assassination" of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and rejected what they described as the hasty conclusion by the police that it was a case of burglary.

They demanded a thorough investigation of the matter and prosecution of the culprits.

The Igbo leaders insisted that the target was to kill Ekweremadu and not to burgle his home as being peddled by the police, wondering why the attackers insisted the deputy Senate president's son take them to his father's bedroom.

According to the governors, the careful and methodical execution of the attack points to something more sinister than burglary. "His attempted assassination has cast a dark shadow on the state of security of lives and property in Nigeria."

The governors spoke as Ekweremadu threatened to release video clips of how his house was invaded by the alleged assassins on Tuesday morning if the police failed to withdraw their statement that it was a case of burglary.

Adopting a motion yesterday sponsored by Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), the Senate condemned what it called hasty conclusion by the police and asked the security agents to do thorough investigation of the alleged assassination attempt.

"For the police to quickly, without interviewing the very person to whom this incident happened, come out and declare that it was a burglary, actually burgles the mind. We know in this country that Bola Ige was killed in his home. We know also that a former gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Funsho Williams was also killed in his home.

"Why are the police engaging in a cover up? Why is it that, at any time that it concerns people that do not have presidential oversight or cover, they quickly come out and have a report," Abaribe queried.

Ekweremadu, in a comment on the motion, disclosed that a deputy inspector general of police in charge of operations visited his house with the commissioner of police for the FCT on Tuesday afternoon to sympathizie with him.

"I showed them round and of course they were very sympathetic of what happened. I was shocked when I heard police saying that what happened in my house was a mere case of burglary. I am at a loss because, as we speak, they have not taken any statement from my son who was hospitalised, they have not gone to the hospital to find out what exactly what happened to my son. They have invited security personnel attached to me, who reported yesterday. Some are still reporting.

"They (police) looked at the CCTV tapes operated by the DSS and a staff of my house, apparently they were not able to figure it out. So it was easy for them to quickly dismiss what really happened.

"Unfortunately for them, later yesterday evening, a technician came and was able to figure out what happened and was able to produce the CCTV footage, including how they gained entrance into my house and how they got away into my room and the fight between them, my wife and my son and all the efforts we made to save our lives.

"I am happy that we have that in our custody which the police are not aware of. I am sure that Nigerians will be shocked on what transpired and all the efforts made to save our lives. Now that the police appear to have concluded the case, unless they withdraw the statement that it was a mere case of burglary, I may now be forced to release those footage to the media and the international community so that Nigerians can judge whether it was a case of burglary or attempt to kill me, or whether they just wanted to come to my house to have a breakfast or have a handshake with me."

Dino Melaye said: "The police adopted a very myopic, porous and intellectually stagnant approach to a very serious matter. To start with, burglary is not mere. Anyone who is engaged in burglary has satanic intention. It is burglary that leads to assassination.

"To come out and say its mere burglary shows that the Nigeria Police has identified some individuals, that no matter what happen, we will not get their service.

"If this has happened to one of the faithful of Mr. President, this will not be the reaction of the inspector-general of police. If this has happened to one of the close friends of the Villa, this will not be the reaction of the IGP." he added.

Senate Probes Alleged Diversion Of Funds For Buhari’s Re-Election

Posted: 09 Nov 2018 11:20 AM PST

Senate Chambers

The Senate yesterday ordered an investigation into an alleged use of the Federal Government's special intervention project funds for President Muhammadu Buhari's re-election.

In a motion yesterday, Senate Minority Leader Biodun Olujimi claimed that the funds had become "politicised" as beneficiaries were being asked to write their names, gender and details of permanent voter cards (PVCs).

"Right now, the funds are being used for political reasons and they are being dispensed and given freely to those people who can bring up their PVCs. One of the forms is here with me. They are now using the funds meant for all Nigerians for political reasons.

"This is one of the forms (raising it), which has on it, 'I stand with Buhari'. It has a place where your PVC will be written alongside your gender and an attachment from Access Bank where money will be disbursed to you.

"There is no corruption greater than people using our collective fund to maintain a political party. There is a need for a committee to be set up to look into this issue," Olujimi said.

Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, however, described the allegation as unfounded. But as he moved to disabuse the minds of his colleagues of any untoward use of the funds, the chamber erupted with shouts of "Point of order!" Efforts by Senate President Bukola Saraki to restore decorum failed for a while.

Saraki subsequently gave the floor to Senator Dino Melaye to move his point of order. The Kogi West lawmaker asked that Olujimi's motion should first be seconded before contributions are made. The chamber became divided along party lines, with Lawan requesting protection and an opportunity to state his point. Saraki agreed.

"I listened attentively to the motion by Senator Olujimi. I want to say that the social intervention programme of this administration is transparent. For the first time in the history of social intervention programme in Nigeria, we have proof that anywhere you are in Nigeria, you can apply."

Shouts about point of order continued.

Senator Albert Akpan (Akwa Ibom North East) took the floor, raising Orders 49 and 52. He reiterated Melaye's position for a seconding of Olujimi's motion. He said contributions in support of the motion should be taken, after which lawmakers opposed to the motion would have the floor.

Saraki disagreed and asked Lawan to finish his contribution. The Senate leader said he was not against whatever the chamber wanted to do with Olujimi's motion but stressed: "The investigation should not be turned into a political weapon."

He told the Senate that Nigerians could still remember how the Sure-P initiative of the previous government allegedly failed. He requested the tendering of Olujimi's document and called for an impartial enquiry.

The Senate adopted the prayer that the probe should be apolitical and also called for an investigation into the Sure-P programme.

Also, in a fresh twist to the 2019 election budget controversy, the Senate reversed its earlier decision that a total of N242 billion be removed from the Service Wide Votes and shared to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies.

Adopting a new report submitted by its committee on appropriation, the Senate said that only N121.2 billion would now be taken from the Service Wide Votes, while the balance of N121 billion would be sourced from some Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The Ministry of Power, Housing and Works became the biggest casualty as it lost a N25.527 billion of its N714.668 billion 2018 budget to the election budget. Others equally affected were: Federal Ministry of Water Resources which is to forfeit N12,954,799,500; Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development which lost N11,057,594,240; Federal Ministry of Education – N10,238,444,433; and Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, which forfeited N7,466,143,244.

The joint committee of both chambers of the National Assembly on INEC and electoral matters had requested that N242.2 billion be vired for INEC and other agencies for successful preparation and conduct of the 2019 polls.

Consequently, the committee headed by Senator Suleiman Nazif recommended the virement of N189,007,272,393 to INEC; N9,481,500,000 to the Office of the National Security Adviser; N10,213,284,455 to the Department of State Security; N3,573,534,500 to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; N27,341,317,433 to the Nigeria Police Force; and N2,628,143,320 to the Nigeria Immigration Service, totalling N242,245,050,100.

JUST IN: Okupe Decamps, Now In Buhari’s 2019 Campaign Team

Posted: 09 Nov 2018 04:00 AM PST

Doyin Okupe, father of Ditan Okupe

The first son of a former special adviser to former President Jonathan Ditan Okupe just indicated interest in joining President Buhari's Campaign Team.

In a letter he wrote to Festus Keyamo, Director General of Buhari's Campaign Team, he expressed willingness to be a part of his team.

Ditan Okupe is a UK trained Lawyer and has 12 years post-call in Nigeria and the first son of Doyin Okupe who is one of the front liners for Atiku's emergence as Nigeria's President, PoliticsNGR reports.

Doyin Okupe, who once said but later denounced the publication made it public that if Atiku should win the Presidency, and rule for a day, it will take Nigeria 10 years to recover.

When the news of Ditan Okupe got to his father, he replied; "Ditan Okupe is my Son. He is a very brilliant young man. He went to King's College, Lagos, Buckingham University, UK and did post-graduate studies in Law at the London School of Economics. We both have had serious issues in the last 5yrs. This may be his way of getting back at me. I wish him luck.

Keyamo is my friend and lawyer. He is still handing a case for me at the Supreme Court. He called me tonight on his acquaintance with Ditan who also has been trying for months to get the contacts of people he considers my political foes, including Tinubu, Kashamu, Otunba Gbenga Daniel etc. For him, this is his finest hour"

Lauretta Onochie, a social media aide to President Buhari praised Festus Keyamo.

She tweeted; "Good job Keyamo. It is fantastic to see the younger generation of iconic corrupt moguls, embracing the anti-corruption team. There's a great future for Nigeria.

It won't be shocking to see Alh. Atiku Abubakar's adult children shouting, "Sai Buhari. SaiBaba2019."

Recently also, the son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo pledged his support to Buhari's re-election bid while his father is backing his Vice, Atiku Abubakar. Are the children of these great men moving in the right way considering the fact that their parents contributed to the mess Nigeria is in now?

Do they think President Buhari has what it takes to move this country forward? Do they have the political clout to counterbalance that of their fathers'? Are they trying to get back at their fathers? Only time will tell.
