2019 PRESIDENCY: Atiku Vs Buhari; Service Chiefs Attend APC ‘Next Level’ Campaign Launch, Shehu Sani Reacts

Posted: 19 Nov 2018 01:13 PM PST

Senator Shehu Sani

A Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna Central, has condemned the attendance of Nigeria  Service Chiefs at the launching of President Muhammadu Buhari's 'Next Level' 2019 campaign policy.

Photos of President Buhari and Service Chiefs were on Sunday seen online at the unveiling of the All Progressives Congress, APC's campaign agenda at the State House, Abuja, Daily Post reports.

Some service chiefs, which includes the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar Sadiq; and Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete, were reportedly among those present at the launch.

Reacting, Sani urged defence and security chiefs to be neutral ahead of 2019 election.

According to him, the attendance of defence and security chiefs at the campaign flag off of one candidate is an outright violation and a bad signal.

Senator Sani, on his Twitter page, wrote: "The neutrality and fairness of the defense & security organs of the state are absolutely necessary to the goal of free, fair & credible elections."

APC Vs PDP: ‘They Promised And Failed’ – Atiku Chides Buhari

Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:16 AM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, and the Presidential Candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has mocked the launch of the 'Next Level' campaign initiated by the Buhari campaign ahead of the 2019 elections.

A statement by his Campaign Organisation on Sunday, described the presentation as vague on policy and very big on promises, Daily Post reports.

The spokesman, Segun Sowunmi, recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) made a number of promises, which they either denied or did not fulfil, "such as the promise to create 3 million jobs per annum and to equalise the value of the Naira with the dollar".

He said: "However, policies are the plans and roadmaps that will be used to achieve those promises. Promises made without policies are like a house without a foundation, they will fall. And we have seen proof of that in Nigeria in the last three years.

"Without a concrete policy, these 'Next Level' promises are nothing more than next level propaganda. We counsel the Buhari campaign that the time for propaganda has gone and Nigerians are now interested in proper agenda.

"In fact, the feedback we have received from Nigerians is one of alarm. Over the last three and a half years of the Buhari administration, Nigeria was officially named as the world headquarters for extreme poverty. Nigerians are asking if this administration is planning 'next level' poverty for them?

"Under this government, 11 million Nigerians have lost their jobs and the administration is so panicky that it has refused to fund the National Bureau of Statistics to release the latest unemployment numbers. Nigerians are asking if this administration is planning 'next level' unemployment for them?

"Under Buhari, the value of the Naira has been so devalued that Bloomberg rated the Naira as the worst performing currency on earth. The nation wants to know if this government plans 'next level' devaluation of the Naira for them?

"In 2018, Transparency International announced that Nigeria made her worst ever retrogression in the Corruption Perception Index moving 12 steps backwards from 136 under the Peoples Democratic Party to 144 under Buhari. Nigerians are asking if this administration is planning 'next level' corruption for them?

"The so-called 'Next Level' launch was an anti-climax in that it just exposed the fact that all that the Buhari government is promising Nigerians is more of the same. If the state of the average Nigerian has not improved in the last three and a half years, more of the same is obviously not what they need.

"We, therefore, urge Nigerians not to lose hope, but to await the launch of the policies, plans and program of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to Get Nigeria Working Again. Remember those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Atiku has a plan. Atiku means jobs and at 12 noon on Monday, November 19, 2018, you will hear from the man with the plan."

PDP’s Chances Of Winning 2019 Presidential Election Very High — Sen. Bwacha

Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:39 AM PST

Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha, Senate Deputy Minority Leader

Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP-Taraba South), Senate Deputy Minority Leader, has expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win the forthcoming 2019 Presidential election.

The Senator, in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, said PDP had 70 per cent chances of winning elections in most part of the country.

"The PDP has a greater chance of winning the Presidential Election in 2019 if it is a free and fair election.

"The matter is beyond President Muhammadu Buhari as an individual because the electorate will vote people on the basis of who they are and their performance in office,'' Bwacha said.

Bwacha said the chances of any elected official to be returned depended largely on how the electorate feel about them, saying that elected officials were supposed to be the messengers of the people.

He said that there was no secret between him and the people of Taraba South Senatorial District, saying "that is my staying power and I have become a phenomenon in my district.

"For instance, I have a scholarship scheme that has been running since 2003 and of course the youth empowerment scheme that I run to strengthen youths who have interest in farming.

"This I do through the provision of farm implements.

"I have made available some tractors to them and it is yielding result because prior to the party nomination, a number of them actually contributed money to purchase my primary nomination form.

"This is outside of other areas like the health sector, construction and employment opportunities.

"Basically we are doing our best to ensure that we leave our footprints on the sands and to the glory of God we are touching the lives of our people."

Bwacha further said that as part of efforts to boost agricultural activities in Taraba State, he sponsored a bill for the establishment of the National Institute for Soil Science in the state.

The Senator said that the institute had since been established and it was contributing immensely to agricultural development in the state.

"Similarly, the Federal University we have in Taraba has gone through some couple of challenges.

"The legislation that brought it in place suffered some set back and I had to bring back the bill to ensure that I get it going,'' he said. (NAN)

While sympathizing with the family of the deceased, he urged the Sudanese Police to uncover the person in Aso rock, behind the death of Habibu Almu.

"He's gone but truth cannot be killed. Sudanese police/Interpol must uncover who in Aso Rock did this & bring them to justice."

Ganduje Receives ‘2018 Best Governor’ Award Amidst Corruption Saga

Posted: 19 Nov 2018 03:03 AM PST

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State receiving award as the Best Governor in 2018

The Governor of Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has been awarded by the Telegraph newspaper as the Best Governor in 2018 in the areas of health and education despite an unresolved bribery allegation against him.

The award came at a time Mr Ganduje is facing allegation of collecting $5 million kickback from contractors.

Background

The Daily Nigerian, an online medium, had first published a series of videos showing Mr Ganduje collecting bribes from contractors in what the newspaper called a sting operation. Similar videos soon surfaced online sparking a national outrage and demand for investigation by Nigerians.

Although the videos were also authenticated by PREMIUM TIMES in-house experts, the videos were dismissed as 'cloned' by the governor who subsequently headed to court to seek redress.

The court last week ordered the seven-member committee set up by the Kano State House of Assembly to investigate the allegations to stay action. The lawmakers had earlier invited Daily Nigerian to defend the allegations which it (newspaper) honored, standing by its publication.

The court order followed a suit filed by one Muhammad Zubair, National Coordinator of a Non-governmental Organisation, Lawyers for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria that the Assembly has no right to investigate the matter.

But the committee vowed to continue with its assignment despite the court order.

The chairman of the committee, and member representing Kano Municipal, Baffa Danagundi, announced the committee's decision on Tuesday in Kano while briefing journalists on the court order.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission boss Ibrahim Magu last week ignored a question posed to him on what the agency was doing about calls for investigation. Mr Ganduje cannot legally be prosecuted while in office but he can be investigated.

An ex-governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, was investigated while in office and immediately picked up for questioning as soon as he left office a few weeks ago. While Mr Fayose is of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Mr Ganduje is a governor under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Honored Despite Allegation
Meanwhile, at the Telegraph organised award occasion, after eulogising Mr Ganduje, the Managing Director of the newspaper, Funke Egbemode, said "it is good to celebrate those that are making a difference in our lives", in obvious reference to the governor.

A statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES by the Chief Press Secretary to Mr Ganduje quoted Mrs Egbemode saying: "We believe that if we appreciate those that did good things we are at the same time encouraging them to do more in life."

She reportedly added that, "Globally, education and health are two significant areas where successful governance and credible development index are often measured and rated.

"As a consummate politician and administrator par excellence, Ganduje realised from the outset, he had to make indelible impact on the lives of his people. And he truly did with affordable healthcare and functional education."

The managing director also acknowledged that, "Ganduje believes strongly in the words of former South African President, Nelson Mandela, that, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Presenting the award to the governor on Saturday night at Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, a former minister of petroleum, Don Etiebet, on behalf of the company, acknowledged how Mr Ganduje transformed both the health and education sectors in Kano State, "within a twinkle of an eye.".

"The outstanding performance of governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje made him stand out among his peers. While understanding the relevance of education in the state development, Ganduje believes in healthy population. That is why he did it diligently to see that he leaves indelible marks in these all-important sectors."

Elated Governor
In a three-minute acceptance speech, the governor appreciated the award. He spoke about the multi-cultural nature of the state, saying that "being the most populous state in the country, we don't want to have a population that will be a liability to us. We want see that our population becomes an asset. Not a liability. That is why we are doing our best in these and all other areas in this administration.

"We assure you that Kano will continue to excel in all sectors of the state. This honour, as being presented here, is meant to encourage us to continue building a stronger state with viable economy and productive population," he reportedly said.

Mr Ganduje added that "We are grateful for such recognition, as you are receiving this intimidating entourage on the podium."

Meanwhile, the newspaper listed over 200 achievements recorded in the state's health sector and others in education under the leadership of Mr Ganduje

Other governors who received awards as tweeted by the newspaper's handle "@newtelegraphng" are: governors of Delta Ifeanyi Okonwa (good governance), Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa (human capital development and infrastructure), Dave Umahi of Ebonyi (agriculture), Yahaya Bello of Kogi (security), Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara (youths empowerment) and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto (man of the year).

Other recipients are: PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar (political icon of the decade), Senate President Bukola Saraki (politician of the year), chairman of BUA group, Abdussamad Rabiu (man of the year), minister of power, Raji Fashola (most outstanding public servant), and John Basco (humanitarian award).
