Issues-Based Is What Nigerians Want In 2019 Politics

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 03:22 PM PST

The biggest folklore in town today is the myth of a supposed impostor named Aminu Jubril El Sudan masquerading as Nigeria's president. While I sympathize with President Buhari on this, I will quickly add that he is not and will not be the first victim of dubious conspiracy theory. There are always proponents and followers of crazy conspiratorial theories.

I grew up captivated by such tales concerning Dr Azikiwe, Chief Awolowo and the great Sarduana. I recall my fascination with the story of Zik holding the key to the River Niger which was handed over to him by the river goddess of the Niger, and how in his supernatural element captured and trapped his rival opponent in a bottle following a failed spiritual assassination.

I recall the birth rumour surrounding former U.S. president Barack Obama where some people including current President Trump claimed he Obama wasn't born an American. The birth theorists produced their own version of his birth certificate.

Even Obama's later release of his authentic birth certificate did not dispel the rumours. I also recall the Da Vinci code conspiracy which claimed Jesus married Mary Magdalene and even sired a son named Judah.

On the issue of whether there is a clone of President Buhari in Aso Rock? I do not believe such nonsense. It is possible the president has a double as some leaders do, but definitely not a clone. The notion of a dead Buhari and one Jubril from Sudan cloned as president is much unfounded no matter how popular it seems. I also admit this is not the kind of story that quickly goes away.

Unfortunately, the president's handlers never helped matters. If anything their poor management of issues surrounding the president's health and activities more than any other factor helped in fuelling the conspiracy theory.

When you lie to the people all the times and over little things, you lose their trust on big issues. For instance, when the president's men including his very close family members claim that the president is not aware of most of the atrocities happening in and outside his government they unconsciously raise questions about the stability of the president. Certainly, Nigerians did not elect a lifeless president in 2015. How can Buhari be an efficient and effective leader worthy of a second term if he is not aware of the corruption inside his government? He is not aware that his politics and leadership style has further divided and polarized the country? He doesn't seem to be aware of anything; he is not aware of the spate of killings across the country; he is not aware that the police and EFCC are now the official thugs of the ruling party; he is not aware of the numerous scandals involving some of his appointees; he is not aware that his minister of information is incapable of saying a single truth; he is not aware that millions of jobs have been destroyed by his policies; he is not aware of the harassment of opposition leaders; he is not aware of his government disobedience of court judgments; he is not aware that his government has created more disgruntled citizens across the country than any other government; he is not aware that in a democracy those that want the president's job the same way he wanted the number 1 job for 4 consecutive times are not enemies of the state. If he is not aware of anything happening around him, then the people have every reason and right to demand for their president. And he is under obligation to come clean with the people. Otherwise despite being exercise in 'masturbation' and 'distraction' this is not the kind of story that will easily go away.

I once had an encounter with someone very high up in the administration that was patriotic enough to admit that the president is a good man who meant well for the country but unfortunately he is not the one in charge of himself and the administration.

When the president's men including his close relatives claim that the President is not aware of what is happening around him, I don't know whether to take them serious that the president is not in –charge. If the president is not in-charge why must he continue in office for another four years?

Nigerians have every right to demand for the true fitness in body and spirit of their president. If he is incapacitated and unable to function properly, then in whose interest is this campaign for re election and continuity being anchored?

Another logic advanced by the president's men that I find incomprehensible is the theory that bad people have taken over the government and that it is these bad people that are sabotaging the president's good intentions. Again I don't know if this is a compliment, a fancy excuse for failure or they meant the president lacks the capacity and competence to perform his duties as president including the ability to hire good people and fire bad people?

I don't know of any appointee sacked by the president on account of corruption, insubordination or sabotage. Instead, he and his men are desperately recruiting into their fold the bad and worse of the society. I challenge him to name one good person in the opposition that he has attracted to his side in the current gale of defection? Rather as in the case of birds of the same feather flocking together we find him increasing his fold with certified renegades. Who is fooling who?

If the president is unaware of what is going on in his government then he has no business remaining in office beyond 2019 because to be president is to lead, take charge and take responsibility.

It has become obvious that those championing for continuity are doing so for their own selfish interest and not in the best interest of the country, or in the interest of the president who needs a quiet and peaceful retirement.

The coordinated efforts of the cabal to use the Buhari mantra to remain in power at all cost will not work. Their tactics to employ propaganda and persecution of opposition leaders will also fail. Buhari must be told that the arrest of opposition members will not arrest Nigeria's problems neither will it arrest the will of the people to exchange their current misery for a better future.

The biggest problem facing Nigeria today is the worsening problem of disunity. This is beside insecurity and corruption. If Nigeria must ever unite again we must do away with the old fashioned politics which is based on propaganda, disinformation and division, and of little benefit to the people. We must bring up politics of issues.

The person who will rule Nigeria in 2019 shall not be someone who will be unaware of things happening in the country; he shall not be another willing hostage of any cabal; he shall not be someone with readymade excuses; he shall not be someone who can't take responsibility.

For those who have ears to hear let them hear. We shall have ourselves to blame if by our acts or omissions we again elect someone as president on the basis of empty and bogey promises packaged to fool the people.

Chibok Girls: Jonathan Challenges Shettima To Publish Panel’s Report

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 02:54 PM PST

Chibok Girls

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's former President, yesterday challenged Kashim Shettina, the Borno State Governor  to publish the report of the Presidential Committee on the April 14, 2014, abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls if he believed the report absolved him of complicity in the unfortunate saga.

Jonathan was reacting to an accusation by Shettima that the former President deliberately evaded including the said report in his new book: 'My Transition Hours', which was presented to the public on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Jonathan, it was unfortunate that rather than explain his actions on the abduction of the school girls, Shettima had continued to hang on to the report believing it absolve him of indiscretion or gave him credit for his actions. In a statement released by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described Shettima's allegation that some facts were missing in the new book as a plot to discredit the book, stressing that the plot would fail because facts don't lie.

The statement reads: "On Wednesday, Nigerians were treated to a noisy but feeble defence by Borno Governor Kashim Shettima who, only ended up showcasing a jaded ritual of chest-thumbing, rather than offer plausible explanations for the ignoble roles he played in worsening the Boko Haram tragedy in his home state. "In the past four years, he has been living in denial, towing an evasive path he has cleverly beaten for himself. What he may not know is that he is only walking the path of a villain.

"Once demand is made on him to explain why he deliberately ignored both the directive of both the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for governors to keep candidates in the affected locations out of harm's way by relocating them to safer areas for their exams, he goes asking for the release of the report of Gen. Ibrahim Sabo-led facts-finding committee set up by President Jonathan.

"He repeated that twaddle Wednesday in his unconvincing tirade against a chapter that dealt with Boko Haram and the 2014 kidnap of Chibok Girls in President Jonathan's book. He made the same demand when pressed in December 2017 to explain his poor choices that resulted in the abduction of the girls."

2019 Elections: I Regret Joining APC, Atiku Reveals

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential flag bearer of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has apologised for joining the groups who came together to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, said the apology had become necessary because of the sufferings Nigerians had been subjected to in the last three and half years, from a party he played a role in bringing to power.

Atiku stated this while speaking at a town hall meeting with residents of Jimeta in Adamawa state.

The Presidential candidate said, "I regretted being a part of the party which never deemed it fit to fulfil all of the promises it made to Nigerians.

"If I had known that the APC would be such a colossal failure and disgrace, I would never had joined the party.

"The APC has failed to fulfil even one of the promises it made to Nigerians. The APC is simply an assembly meant to defraud Nigerians."

Boko Haram: Army Finally Speaks On Killing Of Soldiers By Insurgents

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army on Friday confirmed the reported killing of some Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram sect along the Nigeria-Chad border on Sunday.

It was gathered that no fewer than 44 soldiers were killed during an attack, which occurred at Metele, a remote village bordering Nigeria and Chad.

However, reacting, the Army in a statement on its Official Twitter handle on Friday described the attach as "an unfortunate event",

It also decried the misinformation being circulated about the attack, noting that the situation has been brought under control.

The statement reads, "The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele.

"Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event.

"It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs (Next of Kins) are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources.

"Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footage of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion.

"Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilise the situation.

"The NA sincerely, wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs."

APC Crisis: Oshiomhole Opens Up On Why He Traveled To US

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 03:10 AM PST

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has given reason for his recent impromptu trip to the United States.

It could be recalled, that there were reports that Oshiomhole 'ran away' to the United States to avoid signing candidate replacement documents.

This was following pressure from some APC state governors for their candidates to be fielded as the flag bearers.

However the National Chairman of the APC, has opened up on why he travelled, as he told the Daily Trust that he was in US to attend to family issues.

According to him, "We have procedures for replacement of candidates provided for in the Electoral Act, which allows a candidate, if he withdraws, to be substituted by the party.

"And few people have on their own, for various reasons, written to us that they were withdrawing. I don't need to run away from pressure.

"I think that the minimum requirement for leadership, or the quality of leadership has to be judged substantially by the extent to which one can resist pressure or act under negative circumstances.

"I believe that, in accepting this privilege to be chairman of the APC, being the party in government, there will be pressure.

"What is important is that no one should be able to pressurise one to do what is clearly wrong. Whether wrong with regards to our constitution or in relation to the provision of the Electoral Act or in good conscience.

"So, I don't need to run away to avoid doing what is wrong. I had to visit a family member who was sick. A purely domestic issue.

"I attended to it, and I came back. It's just that we live in a country where people like to make allegations even when they don't make any sense at all.

"Things that sound quite pedestrian, you find people who are otherwise reasonable seemingly giving them hearing.

"I think it was just the invention of the media, and those who have exhausted all the power points and choose to resort to blackmail. But It doesn't change the truth."

2019 Election: Jonathan Hits Hard On Buhari, Urges Him To Understudy PDP Ex-Presidents’ Success Stories

Posted: 24 Nov 2018 02:19 AM PST

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria, ex-President

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former Nigeria President, on Friday faulted the Presidency and the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, for their attacks of his personality based on parts of his book, "My Transition Hours," they found uncomplimentary.

The former President, had in the book which was presented to the public in Abuja on Tuesday, indicted Shettima for alleged negligence in the events leading to the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 and also claimed that his administration fought corruption better than the present administration.

The book drew the wrath of the governor who described it as an elementary book of fiction while the Presidency urged Jonathan to stop playing the ostrich.

Jonathan, however in a statement by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, on Friday described the reactions that have trailed the book as a comprehensive plan to discredit it.

On the Presidency's reaction, Jonathan's spokesman said the Senior special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, towed a "revisionist path" when he claimed that Jonathan's anti-corruption records could not be substantiated.

He said rather than grandstanding, the present administration should understudy the success nuggets of previous administrations.

He added, "Nigeria's best ranking in TI's corruption perception index still remains her placing in 2014, under President Jonathan, as the 136th out of all the countries ranked.

"This is far better than the last position recorded under the present government where Nigeria was ranked as number 148, a decline that took the nation 12 places backward.

"Rather than continue to raise a false banner of piety which apparently is no longer working, this administration would have served itself and the country better by understudying the success nuggets of its predecessors.

"Only then will they learn that Jonathan was able to do this through effective implementation of sound economic policies and institutional anti-corruption measures established by his administration."

Eze said there was no doubt that Jonathan provided focused leadership on the economic front, through institutional and sectoral reforms which impacted positively on the fundamentals for growth.

Eze added, "Again, I urge them to bear in mind that no economy thrives where corruption is either rife or being concealed. So, those who rile and snap at Jonathan because he presented his scorecard in a book should provide their own numbers and statistics to counter his claim.

"In trying to do so, Nigerians would want to know what they have done about the high profile corruption allegations involving such individuals as Abdurahman Maina, Babachir Lawal, as well as sundry allegations of multi-billion-dollar sleaze involving such institutions as the NNPC, National Emergency Management Agency under this administration."

He described Shettima's reaction to the book as "a noisy but feeble defence" which he said ended up showcasing "a jaded ritual of chest-thumbing, rather than offer plausible explanations for the ignoble roles he played in worsening the Boko Haram tragedy in his home state. "

Eze said the governor had in the past four years, been living in denial and towing an evasive path he has beaten for himself.

He said, "What the governor may not know is that he is only walking the path of a villain.

"Once demand is made on him to explain why he deliberately ignored both the directive of both the Ministry of Education and the West African Examinations Council for governors to keep candidates in the affected locations out of harm's way by relocating them to safer areas for their exams, he goes asking for the release of the report of Gen. Ibrahim Sabo-led facts-finding committee set up by President Jonathan.

"He probably thinks that challenging former President Goodluck Jonathan to publish the findings of the committee which, in any case, he is privy to, is a smart way of hiding his lapses.

"If it was bad enough that ignoring the directive meant deliberately exposing the girls and other school children to danger, it was utterly reprehensible that when the girls eventually got kidnapped the governor refused to cooperate with the Federal Government during the search and rescue efforts.

"He is on record to have boasted that he did not contact the President until 19 days after the abduction had taken place. One other of such clearly senseless behaviour was his ill-advised roller coaster trip to America and Europe soon after the girls were abducted; a development that pushed a bemused foreign journalist to ask him what he was doing abroad at a time his home was burning."
