APC Crisis Update: Contempt Notice Issued By Court On Oshiomhole, INEC Chairman

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:34 AM PDT

Court

The Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has issued a contempt notice on the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, over what it termed disobedience to court orders.

The court said Oshiomhole disobeyed its order not to submit the list of Delta APC candidates to INEC, while Yakubu disobeyed its order not to receive and publish such candidates' names from Delta State for the 2019 general elections until the resolution of the case.

The court noted that despite its order dated October 17, 2018, Oshiomhole still went ahead to submit names of purported National Assembly candidates from Delta APC to INEC and that INEC also went ahead to receive and publish such names even when the order directed both parties in the case not to do so but to maintain "status quo."

Recall that Chief Cyril Ogodo-led executive of the APC in Delta State, had dragged the APC, Oshiomhole, INEC and one other to court in a suit, with No: FA/ASB/CS/76/2018, over the issue of the authentic list of candidates that emerged from the parallel primaries conducted in the state through the two contending State Executives in the state.

The primary election conducted by Chief Cyril Ogodo-led Exco produced Prof. Pat Utomi and Olorogun O'tega Emerhor as governorship and senatorial candidates, respectively, while that of the Prophet Jones Erue-led Exco produced Chief Great Ogboru and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as governorship and senatorial candidates, respectively. The fourth defendant in the suit is Prophet Jones Erue and his parallel executives.

The court in its sitting yesterday, issued against Oshiomhole and INEC Chairman Form 48, notice of Consequence of Disobedience to court order, and warned that: "Take notice that unless you obey the direction contained in the order, you will be guilty of contempt and you will be liable to prison."

Earlier at the court, the defendants failed to file their responses claiming they were not given the statutory time and that the Judge should first rule on their motion on notice challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

Maintaining her previous order on all parties to maintain the status quo, the judge affirmed she will not rule separately on jurisdiction but shall take all motions together with the main issues. She subsequently adjourned the matter to November 13 to give extended time to the defendants to file their responses.

2019 Election: Peter Obi Gives Insight Into Demolishing Mosque, Snubbing Sultan Of Sokoto

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:05 AM PDT

Mr. Peter Obi

Mr. Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has denied demolishing mosques when he was governor of Anambra State.

He also denied snubbing the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, chasing the Hausa away from Anambra State and shunning the then Minister of Finance, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman's attempt at mediation.

He made his denial public yesterday while responding to questions from journalists on the sidelines of Southern Sun Summit held in Lagos.

Obi said: "As a matter of fact, the mosque at Onitsha was destroyed before I became governor.

"The irony of this concoction is that I have been a friend of His Eminence, the Sultan right from my first year at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1980 through his tenure as Nigeria's Defence Attaché in Pakistan till the present.

"The fact is that the visit of his Eminence, during which I was alleged to have snubbed him was purely a courtesy call after which I personally accompanied him to see the Obi of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe with whom he had a meeting.

"I also requested His Eminence to visit the Hausa community in the state during which I offered to rebuild and subsequently gave them the funds for that purpose."

JUST IN: WAEC Issues Certificate To Buhari

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:51 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari receives his original certificate from WAEC Registrar, Dr Iyi Uwadiae.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has issued an attestation and confirmation of result to President Muhammadu Buhari.

WAEC Registrar, Iyi Uwadiae, presented the document to the President on Friday at the State House in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Dr Uwadiae was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by the WAEC Head, Nigeria National Office, Olutise Adenipekun; Head of Public Affairs, Abiodun Aduloju; and WAEC Zonal Coordinator (Abuja), Olufemi Oke, among others.

Government officials also present are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, and Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Reacting to the development, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, took to Twitter to fault those who have criticised his principal over his certificate.

President Buhari's school result has been a subject of controversy lately after he submitted his nomination forms to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without a copy of his certificate.

Earlier, the Presidency engaged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a war of words following a suit challenging President Buhari's eligibility to contest the election in 2019 over his certificate.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, had later accused the opposition party of sowing division among the people.
Buhari receives certificate from WAEC
He described the suit challenging the President's certificate as a waste of time, arguing that there were records of higher qualifications obtained by hard work and truly merited by his principal.

On the other hand, PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, purported that the Presidency was always fretting whenever the issue of President Buhari's academic certificate was mentioned.

He said this confirmed assertion that the President was hiding something from Nigerians and called on the President's handlers to do the needful by placing the certificate in the public domain.

2019 Presidency: Babangida Discloses How PDP Will Defeat APC During Elections

Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:05 AM PDT

Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd)

Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd), former Military Head of State,  has opined that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, would have a landslide victory in the 2019 general elections.

Babangida predicted that PDP would have a landslide victory in 2019 with a little bit of work on the electorates.

He made the remark on Wednesday when the candidate of the PDP for the Niger East Zone B Senatorial district, Ibrahim Ishaku (SAN), paid him a courtesy call at his Hilltop mansion in Minna area of the state.

The erstwhile Head of State, stated that with the crisis that has bedevilled the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the party was behaving as if it was under a curse.

Babangida stressed that APC's crisis could pave the way for a massive victory for the PDP in the elections.

He said, "The APC, as a political party, appears to have entangled itself into wobbling traps as if it was under a curse. All that the opposition (PDP) needed to do is to stream up more efforts on working on the electorate to have a landslide victory in next year's election."

Stressing that the 2019 senatorial election in Niger East (zone 'B') would be a walkover against APC, Babangida said, "The APC, in all three tiers of government, is still embroiled in debilitating crises that are threatening to completely bring down the party and in next year's general elections, all that is required by PDP is to step up efforts with fervent prayers to emerge victoriously."
