Presidency Has Shocked Nigerians On New Minimum Wage

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 06:10 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

The Presidency has frowned at the misinterpretation of President Muhammadu Buhari's remarks when he received the report of the Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage from the committee's chairman, Ama Pepple, on Tuesday.

A presidential source, who preferred not to be named, said the president did not endorse N30,000 as proposed by committee as being reported by some sections of the media. He, however, stated that President Buhari had expressed his commitment to ensuring the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage.

But the president's speech at the event was immediately made available to the media and nowhere indicated that the president endorsed N30,000 Minimum wage. "It is not the duty of the president only to endorse a new national minimum wage.

The process involves the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the National Economic Council (NEC) and the National Assembly. "It is imperative for us to always avoid misinterpreting a written speech,'' he added.

At the submission of the report of the Tripartite Committee that negotiated a new minimum wage with labour and other stakeholders, President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government would soon transmit an Executive bill (on National Minimum Wage) to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time. He said: "Our plan is to transmit the Executive bill to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time.

"I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.'' Buhari also expressed delight that the committee had successfully completed its assignment in a peaceful and non-controversial manner.

Let me use this opportunity to recognise the leadership of the organised labour and private sector as well as representatives of State and Federal Governments for all your hard work. "The fact that we are here today, is a notable achievement.

"As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report. "I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks."

The President, however, enjoined the leadership of the labour unions as well as the Nigerian workers to avoid being used as political weapons. "May I therefore, employ workers and their leaders not to allow themselves to be used as political weapons,'' he said.

In her remarks, Pepple explained that the recommendation made by the committee was predicated on the high cost of living, occasioned by the exchange rate as well as the rising inflation rate in the country. She said that the committee also considered micro-economic indicators including the revenue and expenditure profile of the government.

Pepple expressed the hope that the implementation of the recommended minimum wage would boost the purchasing power of the working class, increase consumption expenditure, and stimulate economic growth.

APC Crisis: See What Gov. Amosun Said About Reported Arrest Of Oshiomhole By DSS

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:59 PM PST

Governor Ibikunle Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the Governor of Ogun State, has denied having a hand in whatever the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, may have been going through.

Amosun spoke with reporters after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.

According to media reports, Oshiomhole was during the week, a guest of the Department of State Services, DSS, over unspecified corruption allegations.

The Ogun State Governor had been having a running battle with the party chairmen over the outcome of the party's gubernatorial primaries.

Amosun, when asked about the recent report, said, "I think you are probably giving me an oversight role and I am not a security person. So, clearly, I think that question will not be for me.

"I don't have to hide under a finger to fight. If there is a need for me to put my views across, you know me by now that I will do it."

The Governor also deflected comments on Oshiomhole's reported flight from the country, saying, "I have told you those things are beyond my pedigree and you are asking me questions that I am not well suited for.

"The one that I have to talk about we have said it loud and clear that it doesn't even need to add anything."

APC Chairman Stopped From Travelling Abroad For Medical Check-Up By The Supreme Court

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:09 PM PST

Ojukaye Flag-Amachree

The Supreme Court has dismissed a motion by the chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, seeking to travel to Dubai for medical check-up.

The APC chairman is currently standing trial on allegation of murder of a man during the 2015 election in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that Justice Inyang Okoro, while giving the ruling, held that the application lacked merit.

The judge added that the applicant was being prosecuted for a murder case.

Justice Okoro pointed out that the "medical update letter," dated December 15, 2016, had no connection with the type 2 diabetes melitus which Flag-Amachree claimed he had.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who presided over the panel, expressed worry why Flag-Amachree's trial had not commenced fully after 25 adjournments.

The CJN said from the records of the court, Flag-Amachree had not appeared in court all the while.

NAN recalls that Flag-Amachree's five charges bordering on the alleged murder of Iminabo Dokubo and attempted murder of Ipalibo Jackson is pending at the High Court in Port Harcourt.

The applicant had approached the court with a motion on notice pursuant to sections 33, 36(5) and (6), and Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Flag-Amachree had sought an order granting him leave to travel to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to enable him meet up with the medical appointment scheduled with Dr. George Davis

He had also prayed for the release of his passport with issuance No. A04003142, deposited with the registrar of the Court of Appeal as part of the conditions of the bail granted him,

The applicant was, however, refused bail on May 26, 2016 by a High Court in Port Harcourt, but had the decision set aside on November 24, 2016 by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt.

Flag-Amachree stated that following his detention and subsequent release by the appellate court, his health had deteriorated, leading to his collapse and resuscitation on various occasions both in and out of prison.

The applicant averred that the Saudi German Hospital had agreed to treat him and therefore scheduled an appointment with him for February 16, 2016 at Dubai, UAE.

Flag-Amachree said he could not meet the appointment, as his passport had been with the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt.

He stated that a similar application had earlier been filed at the Court of Appeal on January 24, 2017 but was struck out on February 28 of the same year.

APC Responsible For What Nigerians Are Going Through – Okorocha

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 04:27 PM PST

Governor Rochas Okorocha

The Governor of Imo State, Governor Rochas Okorocha, has charged his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to stop shifting blames and take responsibility for the problems facing Nigeria.

Okorocha said though APC inherited the challenges, it must ensure that they were fixed.

The Governor, stated that Nigerians voted APC into power to fix their challenges and not to complain.

Speaking with State House Correspondents in Abuja, the governor assured that the pains Nigerians are going through was only momentarily.

According to Okorocha, "As APC, we are responsible for everything happening in Nigeria. We are responsible for the good, the bad, the ugly but we are promising Nigerians that we shall fix it.

"We share the pains of Nigerians; every human being must feel it. We also feel what they are going through but we are asking for a little patience.

"Let us do things the right way and do it once and for all. I am sure that by next year, you will begin to see changes, the price of rice will drop, prices of dollars will begin to stabilise and we will see a lot of challenges.

"But at this painful moment, nobody likes it. It is like a woman in the labour room, when she is in the labour room there is no joy but she has to pass through that moment and that moment, she does not wear her high heel shoes, no makeup, no champagne, no party.

"She is going through a process but shortly after that process, joy cometh once she sees the child. So, Nigerians should bear with us as a government."

List Of Governors Who Put Oshiomhole In Trouble, Finally Exposed

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 12:49 PM PST

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of APC

The crisis in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) between some governors of the party and its National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, took another dimension over the weekend as the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly detained and interrogated Oshimhole.

Newsmen gathered yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari, who was not aware of the DSS' action, has ordered an immediate probe of the matter, while the party is said to be considering appropriate sanctions against some of its governors accused of being behind the plot.

In the past three weeks, Oshiomhole has been engaged in a war of words with Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and his Ogun State counterpart, Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The two governors have openly criticised the party chairman for rejecting their anointed candidates, Uche Nwosu and Hon. Abdulkabir Akinlade, to succeed them in Imo and Ogun states, respectively.

It was gathered yesterday that the two governors are seen as the masterminds of Oshiomhole's ordeal.

The APC national chairman, an online newspaper, TheCable, yesterday, reported, was grilled by DSS operatives for nine hours on Sunday after some APC governors alleged that he received bribes during the recently held primary elections of the party.

The paper further reported that Oshiomhole was asked to resign during interrogation, but he resisted, saying he would only do so if he loses the confidence of President Buhari, who was in the know of all actions he took during the party's primaries.

READ ALSOAPC Speaks On Adams Oshiomhole's Arrest By DSS, Reveals Next Move

When contacted, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lanre Issa-Onilu and spokesperson of the DSS, said they were not aware of the arrest and quizzing of Oshiomhole.

However, a top aide to the APC national chairman, exclusively told our correspondent that he (Oshiomhole) was quizzed by operatives of the DSS.

"Yes, he was invited by the DSS, questioned and detained for hours with the operatives asking him to resign his position as chairman of the ruling party, which he objected to," the source said.

He blamed Okorocha and Amosun for Oshiomhole's ordeal, while revealing that the APC national chairman, after conferring with President Buhari on the matter, travelled out of the country on Tuesday.

According to the aide, the two governors are still embittered over the outcome of the APC's governorship primaries in which their preferred aspirants lost. They had claimed that Oshiomhole used his position as the national chairman of the party to shut out their anointed candidates.

It would be recalled that the Oshiomhole-led APC National Working Committee (NWC), at the weekend, submitted the name of Senator Hope Uzodinma to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the governorship candidate of the party in Imo State as against Okorocha's son-in-law, Nwosu, while in Ogun State, it was Prince Dapo Abiodun as against Akinlade, who is Amosun's choice.

READ ALSOPDP Speaks On Alleged Arrest Of Oshiomhole By DSS Over Bribery

A party source, who further confirmed the claim by Oshiomhole's aide, told New Telegraph that the APC national chairman's invitation by the DSS on Sunday, shortly after he returned to Abuja from his village in Edo State, was orchestrated by Okorocha and Amosun, acting in cahoots with an APC governor from a Northern.

According to the source, the governors took the step after they failed to mobilise the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to pass a no confidence vote in Oshiomhole.

His words: "When the move for a no confidence vote failed, the aggrieved governors decided to procure the services of the DSS to force Oshiomhole to write and sign a letter of resignation, which would have ended his chairmanship of the party.

"He was grilled for about six hours during which he was confronted with unsubstantiated allegations that he collected bribes to predetermine the outcomes of the recent APC's primary elections. But, Oshiomhole rebuffed the pressure by the DSS interrogators to make him write his resignation letter.

"The former labour leader insisted that he would not acquiesce in their request unless he had discussed with President Buhari, whose name the DSS interrogators dropped in the course of the questioning. He told the DSS interrogators point blank that he would rather die than to cave in to their pressure for him to resign a position that the party vested in him at the national convention."

Besides Buhari, Newsmen further learnt that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, were also piqued by the action of Governors Okorocha and Amosun.

Sources close to them said they described their action as an affront to the presidency and the APC leadership.

It was also gathered that an APC governor of one of the North-West states is mobilising other Northern governors to support Oshiomhole. The move is said to be a response to the subtle threats by Okorocha and Amosun to rock the boat of the party as well as to work against Buhari in their respective states during the 2019 presidential election.

A former national vice chairman of the party, who said he heard of Oshiomhole's arrest, but couldn't confirm it, warned the party's leadership against the danger of forcing the national chairman to resign his position.

"This is trouble signal for the party because it is happening at a time when everyone is running around to see how we can put our house in order ahead of the election," he said.

While efforts to get Amosun to react to the allegation was unsuccessful last night as one of his media aides, who promised to get back to our correspondent failed to do so, Chief Press Secretary to Okorocha, Sam Onwuemedo, said the governor would respond to the claim at the appropriate time.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, who denied arrest of Oshiomhole by the DSS, told journalists at the party secretariat in Abuja that the national chairman was in his office on Monday and Tuesday before he travelled Tuesday evening.

He explained that Oshiomhole ought to have travelled before this time, but severally postponed his travel because of the submission of the party's list of candidates for the general elections to INEC.

"The party is not aware of any arrest and quizzing of its national chairman. He was in office on Monday and Tuesday before he travelled on Tuesday evening. We wait to hear from the National Chairman on the report, but as I speak to you, no such report of his arrest and grill is before us," Issa-Onilu.

DSS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Peter Nnochiri, who also denied knowledge of Oshiomhole's arrest, in a terse reply to a text message requesting the official position of the agency on the matter, said: "I'm not aware of this."

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as reprehensible, revelations that the Buhari presidency is concealing alleged bribery and corrupt practices involving the APC national chairman.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said it was privy to the pressure on the DSS to let Oshiomhole off the hook for fears that his investigation would unearth the complicity of the presidency and other key members of the APC in the scam.

PDP said: "Information available to the PDP reveal that apart from the billions of naira he allegedly stole from the coffers of Edo State when he was governor, Oshiomhole is facing charges of allegedly collecting billions of naira bribe from some ministers and other APC sources in Adamawa, Rivers, Kano and Imo states to manipulate the 2019 electoral process.

"This is in addition to allegedly collecting billions of naira from presidency sources to influence electoral officers, independent observers and certain polling organisations ahead of the 2019 election, part of which was allegedly diverted for personal use of some APC leaders.

"The PDP had always alerted Nigerians of the corruption allegation burden on the APC chairman and the continued official cover provided for him by the Buhari presidency, including stalling his investigation and prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged stealing of billions of naira from Edo State coffers.

"If the Buhari presidency has nothing to hide; if it is not complicit in the alleged scam, it should allow the DSS and EFCC a free hand to investigate and prosecute his party's factional chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, particularly now that all issues are laid bare before Nigerians.

"As long as the DSS and the EFCC are not allowed to put Oshiomhole into the dock, the Buhari presidency does not have the moral rectitude to speak on corruption. This is especially as the involvement of the DSS shows that the corruption burden of the APC chairman has already become a security risk for our nation.

"Finally, the PDP cautions that under no circumstance should the presidency escort Adams Oshiomhole out of the country, just like it did for the disgraced Buhari's former Minister of Finance."

Senator Ademola Adeleke

The governorship candidate of the main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the Osun election, Senator Ademola Adeleke has said that he is alive, in response to the rumour that he was dead.

Yesterday a passenger named Ademola Adeleke scheduled to travel out of the country on Wednesday morning slumped and died at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. It was gathered that the passenger, who arrived at the airport early in the morning for his flight, slumped and started gasping for breath at about 5.30am.

Senator Adeleke through his campaign organization on Thursday issued a statement describing his death as falsehood.

The statement read:"Our attention has been drawn to an evil rumour circulating about the state of health of Senator Ademola Adeleke. We affirm that the people's governor is hale and hearty.

"All hands are on deck to regain the mandate of the people freely given on September 22. We owe Osun people that sacred duty."

Anambra Monarchs Tell Buhari To Call EFCC To Order Over Innoson Vs GTB Issue

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:46 AM PST

Innoson and EFCC

No fewer than 30 traditional rulers from Anambra South senatorial zone rose from a meeting at the palace of Igwe Kenneth Orizu of Nnewi yesterday, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to follow laid down rules in handling the matter involving the chairman of Innoson Group, Chief Innocent Chukwuma and Guarantee Trust Bank.

The monarchs said they decided to intervene in the matter because it was assuming a dangerous dimension, regretting that Chukwuma, who ought to be encouraged in his determination to help Nigeria's economy grow, was being distracted and humiliated by the EFCC for no justifiable reasons.

The monarchs accused EFCC of violating legal procedures in the prosecution of the case against Chukwuma and his company.
The statement read in part: "As leaders and elders of the land, knowing fully well, the roles and activities of EFCC, we have decided to call on you, Mr. President, to call EFCC to order on this matter so as not to allow this little crisis degenerate into a level that will be difficult and costly to resolve.

Innoson Motors

"We wonder why EFCC would go to arrest a man who provides direct jobs to over 7,000 workers and indirect jobs to over 15, 000 people, and a revered industrialist who made Nigeria proud by establishing the first vehicle manufacturing plant in West Africa.

"It is on record that EFCC never extended any  invitation to Chukwuma prior to the invasion of his house to bundle him  out like a common criminal. This, to us, is an insult to the Igbo race and the nation in general.

"Soon after his house was invaded, EFCC filed a criminal charge against Chukwuma and his company, Innoson Nigeria Ltd, in Lagos High Court irrespective of the fact that there was an existing case on the same subject matter and transactions as the one filed by the EFCC, which as of then and till now, is being prosecuted by the Attorney General of the Federation at the Federal High Court Ikoyi Lagos.

"This amounts to gross abuse of court process by the EFCC. We therefore wonder whose bidding EFCC is doing by not following due process of the law.

"In view of the foregoing, we, the Anambra South Senatorial Traditional Rulers Forum therefore resolve that: President Muhammadu Bugari calls on the chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu to call his officers to order to follow laid down rules and regulation in handling its prosecution.

"The President should tell EFCC to stop displaying elements of bias in the business dispute between Innoson Nigeria Ltd and GT Bank."

Peter Obi As Atiku’s Joker – Part 2

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 04:32 AM PST

Peter Obi

Many people have already pointed to his immense financial war chest. It is believed in some quarters that between him and Atiku, they could split the full financing the presidential project from their pockets and feel nothing about it, just like Abiola did in 1993. Others have talked about his records in office, where today, he holds the trophy as the only governor who left the hugest amount in the coffers of the state and very minimal debt portfolio for his successor in the history of the country.

There is this aspect that before he left office, he not only paid off all the debts of more than N30billion owed retirees as pensions and gratuities by previous government, but actually upped their salaries and created a legacy for paying workers by the 25th of every month, which has been sustained till date. Yet, many are pointing to the immensity of his power of speech and ability to hold his audience spellbound, which is one of the biggest assets of politicians. That aspect, they say is already tested at different forums and on several occasions both nationally and internationally.

Or is it his wizardry in managing men and materials, such as he brought to bear on Fidelity Bank that has made the institution one of the most fortified and forthcoming even while others appear to be floundering and tottering on the brinks. But what many may not know is that Obi, like the late MKO, has been a silent giver and a builder of bridges in many places. The refrain everywhere is quite loud that he is a very stingy person not given to parting with money. But those stories are coming from those who do not know him or do not appreciate what the idea of open-handedness means.

Those who do, say a Peter Obi, may never be caught throwing money in the air at parties of whatever kind, no matter the occasion. He is not the type to organise lavish birthdays. You may never see him buying newspaper pages to celebrate people's birthdays either, just as you have heard him on several occasions, even as a governor, appealing to those who wanted to give him gifts during his birthdays or buy media spaces on his behalf, to convert same into cash to be donated to the needy in the society.

These are on record. So, when you hear that he does not "spend," you may wish to calculate how much he has spent since he left office in donations to schools, not only in Anambra, his home state or the South East, but in far-flung places in the 36 states of Nigeria to ensure the development of education. You are sure to be surprised by the figures. Let me give you an example of what Obi does with his money. In May, this year, Obi was at the burial of his elder sister, Lady Bibiana Adani in Ukana, Enugu State. From the story told after the event, some of the people in the rural community, went home unhappy. Why? They had come prepared for a lavish ceremony, with some of them bringing extra bags to carry home some of the goodies, while others were already imagining what they would go home with as gifts, especially now it has become a fad for items such as mobile phones, electronics and other highly-priced takeaways are now part of such events.

However, they were disappointed that no such thing happened. Now, this was not only a very rich man, but a former governor. What stinginess? Of course, nobody could blame such grumbling, given what could have been the picture in other circumstances. But Obi explained his sentiments to reporters who took him on over the issue after hearing the complaint of the people. This was his reaction: "Sometimes I shudder on what people do for the dead as if they are marketing commodity. All the dead needs from the living is decent burial after they must have taken care of them while living. As a Catholic, what I owe her now are prayers and booking of masses for happy repose of her soul and not an opportunity to display wealth that should rather be used to add value to humanity."
