Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:11 AM PST

Uche Nwosu

Rochas Okorocha, the Imo State Governor, Son-in-law, Uche Nwosu has formally announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC to the Action Alliance, AA.

Mr. Nwosu said he would emerge the next Governor of the state in 2019.

Recall that Nwosu, who lost out of the All Progressives Congress, APC's governorship race to Senator Hope Uzodinma, announced his defection at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Daily Post reports.

This was shortly after his arrival from Abuja on Tuesday.

He said, "injustice, impunity, and lack of respect for party's constitution" made him dump the APC.

Nwosu disclosed further that AA will work with the APC to have President Muhammadu Buhari re-elected.

Nwosu, a former Chief of Staff to Governor Okorocha, added, "We are going to work with APC to deliver Imo State to President Muhammadu Buhari.

"We will deliver Governor Rochas Okorocha as Senator because Action Alliance has no senatorial candidate in Orlu zone.

"I have no problem with President Muhammadu Buhari. My headache is the National Chairman of APC.

"It is a divine project and we are ready for the election. It is an inter-party marriage between AA and APC in Imo State.

"We will work with APC to deliver President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Rochas Okorocha, myself and all our candidates."

Mr. Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector General of Police

Mr. Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector General of Police, on Monday directed Commissioners of Police across the Nation to effect arrest and immediately prosecute  politicians and their supporters found in possession of dangerous weapons during campaigns and rallies in their respective states.

The IGP, while speaking in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, added that the force will not condone hate speeches, indecent and criminal defamatory conducts from any individual or group that can cause threat to public peace and safety anywhere in the country.

Idris spoke during an interactive session on the security arrangement for campaigns and rallies put in place for political parties towards 2019 elections, Daily Post reports.

He added that Commissioners of Police in the 36 state Commands and the Federal Capital Territory including their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police in the 12 zonal commands are to protect and safeguard all venues of campaigns, rallies and other approved electioneering activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) throughout the country.

The IGP, who was represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Agboola Oshodi-Glover, disclosed that the police had assessed and accordingly deployed personnel to flash points and vulnerable areas to prevent and nip in the bud any form of inter-party frictions, thuggery and clashes that can lead to disturbance of public peace, not only in the state but elsewhere across the country.

He also advised political parties to abide by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and INEC guidelines and play the game according to the rules.

Idris urged all parties to prevail on their flag bearers, members, supporters and fans not to engage in any act or conduct that can incite violence or disturbance of public peace anywhere in the country during the campaign and beyond.

He said the CPs and AIGs have been placed under strict instructions not to tolerate any form of political intimidation, demonstration of violent conducts and over dramatization of political fans that can precipitate political clashes and jeopardize prevailing peace in their commands from any political party or politicians.

Idris said, "Commissioners of police are to effect arrest and immediately prosecute any party member or supporter in possession of firearms or dangerous weapons during campaigns and rallies in their respective states.

"The force will not condone any hate speeches, indecent and criminal defamatory conducts from any individual or group that can cause threat to public peace and safety anywhere in the country."

While tasking policemen not to engage in partisanship or bias but remain focus and provide security for all, the IGP also advised parents to monitor their children, wards, subjects and adherents to be law abiding and resist to be used to cause disturbance of public peace and violation of law and order during the period preceding and after elections.

NASS PROTEST: We’ll Find Money Anywhere And Pay Your Allowances – Saraki Tell Protesting Staff

Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:28 AM PST

Dr Bukola Saraki, Senate President

The audacity of protest by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, in the National Assembly on Tuesday forced the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki to address protesters after about six hours.

The protest, which began at exactly 8am Tuesday by the National Assembly staff over the non payment of allowances, successfully stopped Tuesday's sitting as lawmakers of the upper and lower chambers were turned back.

Immediately the Senate President appeared for his address, the noise became tumultuous with chants of "no alert, no sitting".

Saraki, in his address, said he and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have accepted responsibility for the non payment of allowances and those issues that formed the grievances of the staffers.

He also promised that they would find money anywhere to pay the protesting parliamentary staff, noting that it was their entitlements.

"As the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, we accept responsibility for the non payment of part of your allowances.

"We will find money anywhere to pay you, but you should give us time to do that.

"Please give us time between now and Friday this week so that the leadership could sit with the NASS management over this issue," he said.

Infuriated by what Saraki said, the protesters insisted that the upper and lower chambers would not be opened for sitting until they all got alert confirming payment.

Meanwhile, a female protester, who spoke with DAILY POST under the condition of anonymity, explained that the National Assembly management was in receipt of huge sums of money under the sub-heading that has to do with their allowances last week Thursday, stressing that it was on this basis that the protest would continue until they are paid.

She said, "We know what we are doing here. The issue of Friday appointment with the management will not be accepted. We have been hearing this for a long time. Let them pay us now.

"Just last week Thursday, the money we are talking was released by the Federal Ministry of Finance and we will not wait for it to be shared by the management as usual," she insisted.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari

Yoruba elders and leaders have vowed to work with the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the forthcoming election.

The leaders also reiterated their call for restructuring of the country.

They said it was through restructuring that Nigeria could witness prevalence of equity, fairness and justice, Daily Post reports.

The leaders including a chieftain of pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo; former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Chief Olabode George; Prof. Banji Akintoye, Senator Femi Okunronmu, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, among others, made their position known at a 1-day South- West Colloquium with the theme: "2019: The South- West Speaks," coming out with a 12-point communique, read by Prince Uthman Sodipe.

The elders and leaders in their communiqué; noted that the Yoruba remains cohesive, indivisible and strengthened by a common cultural bond and ideological vision.

They maintained that, "The Yoruba believe in the restructuring of Nigerian union in order for the prevalence of equity, fairness and the dominating anchor of justice.

"The centre is too unwieldy, too disproportionate, effectively creating equity in the distribution of the collective wealth.

"We must encourage every state in our federation to grow on the momentum of the available resources within their soil."

On their decision to adopt Alhaji Abubakar as the Yoruba candidate for the 2019 presidential poll, the communiqué added, "The Yoruba people resolved to adopt the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for the presidency in the 2019 elections in view of his support for the restructuring of Nigeria to create equal opportunities, fairness and justice for all stakeholders."
