Public drug abuse by teens was a forgettable part of 'Detty December'

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Public drug abuse

In December, Pulse did a breakdown of what 'Detty December' is and how it's a scam to suck you of funds with a veiled hose of enjoyment that will kill you.

Over the past year, teenagers — especially from the IJGB crowd — have become key features of the Nigerian concert culture, baring all and defying Nigerian standards of 'morality' with avant-garde concepts.

While 20-somethings also join in, the spotlight is more on what these teenagers do and it's really starting to reek of worrisome headlines.

While being scantily clad in provocateur outfits, with no bra or sometimes, short-short skirts or dresses can be overlooked for the scenery and times of expressionism we live in, drug and substance abuse will never be cool for teenagers who maybe, shouldn't be at some of these shows.

In all its glory, Detty December has that one blemish that doesn't seem like reducing anytime soon. It's so bad that these kids engage in some of these vices in the most obvious of ways.

Why are kids at concerts?

Lolade, a 34-year-old Banker who grew up as a Pastor's son said he feels teenagers need better exposure to the thrills of life for when they turn 14.

"I think when you know the thrills of life very early, you probably learn how it's overhyped and move on, you engage for a while and change in a few years or you engage in those thrills and they derail your life or become a part of you as you thrive," he says.

He continues, "Whichever way, if you will be ruined by vices, you'll be, if you won't be, you won't be. A child who gets ruined by those thrills will definitely understand how to cope early, but there are risks. That said, the teenager will soon know these thrills at Uni (University) so a child who gets ruined by thrills he knew at 14 from concerts will probably still be ruined had he discovered it in Uni."

On the other hand, Olof, a Ukrainian based in Nigeria says, "On no account should a child under 18 be allowed to go to concerts by his parents. I understand the reasons for advocating this, but it's too what's the word, risky."

Two great points, but the issue is that Nigerian kids are too boxed and protected. It's a factual cliché that children who get excessively guarded as children get lost in the thrills of life when they leave home and get high on life and freedom.

Make no mistake, vices and perpetrating wrongs are very fun! So, once these kids get to that stage, they get attracted to those fun and thrilling things their parents shielded them from and get lost in them.

Kids need exposure and allowing them to go to concerts has a lot of positives that will serve them well later in life. We can then take solace in the fact that if a child abuses this opportunity and gets lost in thrills, it's not exactly the parent's fault.

If the child hadn't gotten lost there, he would likely have gotten lost later — getting lost in thrills is mostly about a lack of discipline, not entirely influence. What is bad is bad, no matter the enjoyment societal factors will remind you from time to time that what you're enjoying is bad and so will your natural inclinations.

However, it is also risky to allow children and teenagers attend concerts alone, even if a driver patiently waits in the wings.

Can parents really stop children from engaging in vices?

Parents can try, but it's gotten to a level where vices and 'thrills' have been normalized and elevated to a status of 'cool' and that is sufficient tacit permission that anyone requires.

Thus, no matter what a parent does, a child will engage in whatever vice he enjoys — it's just life.

That said, doing it with excessive carelessness to be cool and fly is worrisome

Public or private, vices are wrong. But these kids openly form circles at concerts, passing around jumbo blunts, share blue pills which they down with copious doses of alcohol.

Where are we headed? Why do these kids enjoy vices more than simply living the life?

Yes, a lot of us sought out these thrills at their age, but it was never this bad. While some might peg the openness of it to a lack of pretence, it is glossing a terrible wrong with positive shade.

We need to do better.

Lagos Rally: ‘Our members stabbed MC Oluomo’ – APC spokesman, Joe Igbokwe

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:29 PM PST

Joe Igbokwe
The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe, has admitted that members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers who clashed at the flag-off of the party's campaign in the state and stabbed a factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya, are members of the party.

Igbokwe, who confirmed that the hoodlums who stabbed Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo, were engaged in a supremacy battle, wondered why they brought the fight to the campaign ground.

He stated this while reacting to comments on a Facebook post he made concerning the rally.

The APC chieftain, while thanking residents of Lagos in the post, said he had never witnessed such a massive turnout of supporters since he became the publicity secretary of the party in 2007.

"NURTW took their gang war to our venue, but thank God it was not worse. We are overcomers," he later added in a comment.

A Facebook fan, Adeniyi Jones, who mentioned the names of some gang leaders, including late Small Jpron, tackled Igbokwe.

He said hoodlums in the NURTW were members of the party in the South-West; to which Igbokwe replied: "We are not denying they are our members, but must they take their struggle for power and supremacy to our campaign ground to endanger other people?"

Recall that no fewer than eight persons were reportedly injured during the rally, including three journalists who sustained gunshot injuries.

MC Oluomo is currently receiving treatment at the Eko Hospital, Ikeja.

The Police had declared another leader of the NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle, aka Seigo, wanted over his alleged involvement in the bloody clash.

2019 Presidency: PDP accuses Fayemi of frustrating Atiku’s campaign in Ekiti

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:21 PM PST

PDP
The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ekiti State chapter, has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, had deprived the party a venue it requested to hold the presidential campaign for its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku's campaign train is to visit Ekiti on Monday, January 14 to canvass for votes ahead of the February 16 presidential election.

Briefing newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, the PDP State Chairman of the party, Barr. Gboyega Oguntuase, said it smacked of disrespect for Fayemi to have allegedly frustrated the use of Oluyemi Kayode stadium as requested by the party.

Oguntuase said the action had again attested to the widespread fear by the opposition party that the APC was desperate to rig the polls and subvert the will of the populace in the 2019 electionsDaily Post reports.

The government had in its reply dated January 8, 2019 and signed by Director, Administration and Supplies, Ekiti Sate Sports Council , on behalf of the General Manager, Mr. Akinola P.A. declared that the stadium was under reconstruction and that it has to be prevented from vehicular movement at this time.

The letter reads: "I have been directed to refer to your letter received in January 2 requesting the use of Oluyemi Kayode Stadium for your presidential campaign.

"However, there was need to let you know that the stadium is under repair in preparation for the next football season and wetting. The tracks need to be prevented from vehicular movement and for this reason, we decline the use of this facility".

The PDP Chairman said it was wrong for the government to have waited this long before replying to the letter, saying this further corroborated the party's fear that the APC was out to truncate the rally.

"This is a disrespect to the PDP and the person of Alhaji Atiku. If the government fails to accede to our request, we will have no option than to use any major road in the State capital as campaign ground. Atiku, the next President can't be stopped by any political juvenile.

"If you look at the violent inclination of the party in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and others, you will see that the APC is hopeless and helpless and it has no respect for human lives.

"We call on the federal government to prevail on Governor Fayemi to allow us hold the presidential rally in that stadium. Atiku as a Nigerian is free to seek the votes of Ekiti voters and it will be wrong for anyone to stop him under any guise.

Reacting, Fayemi described the allegation as misdirected and spurious, saying the civil servants only replied to the letter based on the prevailing situation and that he never influenced their opinions in the matter as a governor who believes in due process in the civil service.

Fayemi, who reacted through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Segun Dipe said: "When we came on board, virtually all the facilities are in a state of disrepair. The Ikogosi warm spring, the fountain hotel and this stadium are one of them.

"As a responsible government, we must take steps to put them back to normal shape and Fayemi won't take any step that would infringe on the right of anyone as a democrat. Even, the PDP didn't request for the facility through the governor and it was wrong for them to have blamed him in the first instance," he stated.

New Minimum Wage: See Reasons Nigerians Should Not Believe Buhari – Fayose

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:13 PM PST

Mr. Ayodele Fayose
Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the mmediate past Governor of Ekiti State, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari was never sincere with workers on the N30,000 minimum wage.

He described today's setting up of an advisory technical committee as diversionary and as a plot to further deceive the workers.

He said the President became jittery when the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) vowed not to vote for him unless the N30,000 minimum wage is implemented and opted to deceive the workers with the Bismark Rewane led committee, Daily Post reports.

According to a release issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, the former governor asked what other function the committee will perform since he already promised to send a bill to the National Assembly to effect the change from N18,000 to N30,000 three months ago.

Fayose said; "It is on record that on November 6, 2018, while receiving the report of the Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage, President Buhari endorsed N30,000 as the new national minimum wage. He also promised to send a bill to the National Assembly to effect the change from N18,000 to N30,000.

"This is more than three months and the President is now setting up another committee purportedly to recommend modalities for the implementation of the new minimum wage. So what did the first committee that recommended the N30,000 minimum wage actually do?

"How committees is he going to set up on a new minimum wage that he told Nigerians that he already approved since November last year and was set to present the bill to the National Assembly?

"The President is simply playing on the intelligence of the workers by giving impression that he is committed to the new minimum wage so as to get votes from the them.

"The workers should therefore shine their eyes and avoid being deceived by a President who has failed in all ramifications and desperately seeking to hold on to power even at the expense of the suffering Nigerians."

While insisting that the president lacked clue and cannot provide any solution to the problems of Nigeria, Governor Fayose said no amount of deceitful committee will sway the workers into reelecting allowing a failed government to superintend over the country for another four years.

2019 Presidency: Explain your role in Buhari’s cabal which has crippled Nigeria – PDP dares Tinubu

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:05 PM PST

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization, PPCO, has challenged the co-Chairman of the ruling APC Presidential Campaign Council, "Bola Tinubu, to explain his role in the President Muhammadu Buhari Presidency cabal" that has "crippled our nation's economy."

PPCO dares Tinubu to respond to allegations that he agreed to lead Buhari's campaign team, following alleged "threats by agents of the Buhari Presidency to expose and prosecute him for corruption allegations and not because he believes in the propriety of President Buhari's re-election."

A statement by PPCO spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said "It is very unfortunate that at the time Nigerians, across the board, are boldly jettisoning their personal interests and joining in the quest to rescue our nation from President Buhari's incompetent, corrupt, divisive and anti-people regime, a leader of Asiwaju's status is chasing personal interests and self-preservation.

"Nigerians can recall how Asiwaju in January 2018, at the 15th Annual Daily Trust Dialogue rejected the Buhari administration's nepotism, incompetence, corrupt oil subsidy regime; blamed it for the high-level of poverty in our country and urged Nigerians to be guided by their conscience in electing leaders in the 2019 general elections.

"Berating the Buhari administration, Asiwaju held that "too much political and economic power resides in the hands of too few. This result in a society described by too much unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, too little food, yet too much poverty."

"Asiwaju had also rightly posited that, under President Buhari, "rather than becoming a joyous nation, Nigeria has become a cruel playground where the fears and concerns of the average person get exploited but their interests never get promoted."

"He then concluded by urging Nigerians to follow their conscience in the 2019 elections by resisting "unthinking passions and old prejudices", which is the hallmark of President Buhari's re-election campaign.

"The question Nigerians are asking now is, what has suddenly changed in President Buhari's leadership style to warrant Asiwaju's full circle turn.

"Nigerians have seen that Asiwaju's involvement in Buhari 2019 campaign is not motivated by any national or even regional interests but by personal reasons far from the general good.

"While we understand the frustration being faced by Asiwaju in this unfortunate task of marketing a rejected product, we caution him to be careful not to allow the ill-fated Buhari Presidency to destroy whatever is left of the respect he has earned among Nigerians, who have already made up their minds to rally behind the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as the next President of Nigeria.

"Asiwaju, by now, would have noted how Nigerians berate him whenever he lends himself as a tool in the hands of the Buhari Presidency to cast aspersions on Atiku Abubakar.

"We, therefore, counsel Asiwaju to be mindful of his status in the pantheon of leaders and note that he is not with Nigerians in his new enterprise, for which he now needs to clear his name over alleged involvement in the anti-people cabal at the Buhari Presidency.

"We also want to caution Tinubu on his penchant for making unsubstantiated allegations against our candidate, Atiku Abubakar."

PPCO insisted that the former Lagos State governor has "no moral rectitude upon which he can stand to make allegations against Atiku.

"He should control his emotions and ensure that he desists from making frivolous allegations against Atiku Abubakar, whom Nigerians have resolved to elect as President, come 2019," the statement added.

Saraki ‘shoots’ Buhari, exposes massive fraud in oil sector

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 04:55 PM PST

Dr. Bukola Saraki, Nigeria's Senate President
Dr. Bukola Saraki, Nigeria's Senate President, has alleged that there is massive fraud within the oil sector, with the knowledge of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In an interview with Channels Television's Seun Okinbaloye, which aired on Wednesday night, the Senate President said the Buhari government's arbitrary payment of subsidy on assumption that Nigeria consumes fifty million litres (50million litres) of fuel a day, is fraudulent.

The Senate President, recalled that under the Jonathan administration, subsidy was based on an assumption that the nation consumes 30million litres of fuel daily.

Saraki added that he and some other lawmakers warned that the Jonathan government was condoning corruption "by over importing fuel and because of that we were losing a lot of money".

He said the present government instead of changing the process, jerked up the importation by 20 million litres extra.

Dr. Saraki said, "you would have thought that a government that was to fight corruption and prevent leakages would even if you are going to continue subsidy, ensure that it is better managed."

He said there is no way Nigerians can consume 50million litres a day.

"It is just money being stolen," he alleged.

He further argued that there is almost no way that President Muhammadu Buhari is not aware of what is going on within his government, stressing that the Senate has investigated the issue but "we have an environment where agencies of government are emboldened to disregard the National Assembly, it is a big issue".

The Director-General of the Atiku/PDP presidential campaign said the lawmakers have called for the inclusion of subsidy in the budget but that request has lingered for two years and President Buhari has only just agreed to bring it in.

He said, "This kind of decisions have led to leakages and this is the root of corruption"

ADP begins ward-to-ward campaigns in Edo

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 07:08 AM PST

Action Democratic Party
The Action Democratic Party ( ADP ) is to kick start its ward-to-ward campaigns across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo on Monday.

The party's candidate for the Edo-South Senatorial district, Mr Ese Owie, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin on Wednesday.

Owie, who said that the ADP was poised to win all the available elective positions in the state during the impending general elections, stressed that the people have shown a readiness to change the existing order.

According to him, "The people of Edo State now have a renewed determination to do away with the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives' Congress (APC).

"They have now come to see a better choice in our party, the ADP, a party that has come to change their fortunes for the better.''

The ADP candidate noted that the essence of the ward-to-ward campaigns was to take the message of hope to the people in their neighbourhoods throughout the state.

"While I, as the party's Senatorial candidate will be touring all the 77 wards in Edo-South with the message, similar activities will be taken across all the entire 192 wards of the state.

"Starting from Monday and for the next two weeks, I will go round the nooks and crannies of the 77 wards of Edo-South.

"The message is clear, and other political parties know it, that the ADP is the party to beat come February,'' he stressed.

The ADP is one of the 91 registered political parties in the country.

INEC announced on Monday that there were 84, 004, 084 voters registered to vote in the 2019 general elections.|

Here are 3 tips to reduce your screen time

We are all guilty of spending far too much time on our phone's but did you know that too much screen time can have a negative effect on your mental health? Here's how to reduce time spent on your phone.

Smartphones have transformed modern life in more ways than anyone could have imagined. They enable 24/7 access to infinite information and tools that help us stay organized, track our fitness, express ourselves and be entertained.

However, easy access to these digital devices is often counter-productive and has led to high screen time and resulted in a negative impact for mental health.

Since the rise of the technology, our indicators of positive mental health such as happiness, self-esteem and life satisfaction have decreased while we find ourselves dealing with mental health issues like anxiety, depression and feelings of loneliness, especially among young people.

One reason that researchers have given for this might be the increased time we spend on our phones, in particular on social media, which leads to increased feelings of social isolation, cyber-bullying, comparison and distraction from personal values and goals.

If you're worried about the amount of time you spend on your phone and think it can be contributing to your feelings on loneliness, insecurity and overall, making you under-productive, keep reading...

1 Eat your meals without a screen
It may be tempting to use your meal times to catch up on news or scroll through your social media.

However, by banning the screen during these breaks you will give your eyes a rest and be more likely to appreciate and enjoy your meal.

2 Limit your screen time when not at work
Don't check your work emails or communication channels at home. Of course, it's tempting to stay on top of your game whether at work or not but it's important to create boundaries for yourself.

Constantly checking your work email while at home increases your exposure to the screen and also exposes you to more stress.

3 Set a timer
Keeping up to date on your social media channels is fun and socially very important for many users. But these channels can also be a big time waster for many people.

If you enjoy browsing through social media platforms and find yourself getting lost in the endless scroll, you may benefit from setting a time limit per day you will spend there. Once you become aware of how much time you spend, you can makes steps to reducing it.

4 Get an app
It may seem counterproductive but getting an app on your phone can actually help you reduce your time on your phone. Moment is a great app that makes you more aware of how many times you pick up your phone and how many hours you spend on your device.

Knowing how bad it is will spur you on to do better and it is incredibly rewarding to see your screen time creep down day by day. Give it a go!

5 Participate in healthy interests and hobbies
Making time for hobbies or activities that promote health, personal growth or connections with others can help to reduce screen use and provide a sense of meaning and purpose.

If you enjoy reading, working out or even arts and crafts, make sure you indulge in activities that don't enjoy technology. Trust us, you will be better off for it.

Presidential polls: Nigeria’s date with destiny – Osinbajo

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 06:52 AM PST

Yemi Osinbajo

February 16, 2019, Presidential election will be Nigeria's date with destiny as it will determine whether the country will make progress or go back to the days of corruption and impunity, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

The Vice President stated this in Abuja on Tuesday when he addressed a cross-section of Nigerians at the "Drive 4 Buhari/Osinbajo Rally" – an initiative of the "I am Ready Campaign Group", organized to mobilize support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, "February 16, 2019, is our date! It is the date of our country with destiny; that is the date we will decide whether we want to go forward or we want to go backwards.

"All that President Buhari has tried to do in these past four years, is, first of all, clean up the big mess that we met. The major problem of our country has always been corruption; stealing of the resources of the people. I have never heard it before, where a person after stealing your money says: "I am the one who can come back and help you".

The "Drive 4 Buhari Osinbajo" Rally – one of the highpoints of Prof. Osinbajo's Tuesday outings, started as early as 9 a.m. with thousands of volunteers within and around the FCT converging on the Eagle Square arena to register their support for the Buhari presidency.

The drive-through rally involved thousands of volunteers many of whom drove their cars and tricycles adorned with President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's posters from satellite towns of Gwagwalada, Zuba, Nyanya, Kuje and other suburbs of the FCT, through the various parts of the city to the Eagle Square, all indicating their support for Buhari's re-election.

At the Eagle Square, thousands of admirers and supporters of Buhari and Osinbajo chanted victory songs to welcome the Vice President as he made a grand entrance into the arena for the final phase of the programme.

Also on the ground to spice up the event were entertainers who danced and sang popular songs to the admiration of all.

Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said the choice of whom to vote for in the coming elections should not be very difficult as President Buhari is renowned for his integrity, "even Buhari's worst enemies know that he is an honest man, even the thieves know that he is an honest man."

Speaking specifically about the programmes and projects executed by the Buhari-led Federal Government, the Vice President said the achievements recorded so far were as a result of prudent and transparent management of resources.

He said: "for the first time, our country is spending money on roads and railways. They have been talking about railways since, for the past 16 years, but we have just started building the Lagos – Kano railway now.

"We are earning less money but we are doing far more. We are also building the Itakpe – Warri railway and even the 2nd Niger Bridge. They commissioned the 2nd Niger Bridge before, but when they commissioned it, there was no design. Today, we have started to build the 2nd Niger Bridge.

"In every State in Nigeria, we are building a major road; we are going to complete the Lagos – Calabar railway, by the grace of God, Port Harcourt – Maiduguri is also going to be completed."

In the Power Sector, Prof. Osinbajo said "after 16 years, 3000MW of power is all that we had, but today we are at 7000MW. But we have not even started yet, because we know that power is still a problem, so we are trying to solve the problem."

He said the Federal Government in its determination to address the challenge had adopted measures to address issues of both generation and transmission.

"In Sabon Gari market, we have a separate solar power plant and many of the shops have power now. In Ariaria market in Abia, we have also done the same thing, we also did the same thing in Sura market in Lagos, and we also put power in Edaiken market in Benin.

"Very soon, our country will have enough power with the plan that we have, to provide power separately, only through the National Grid, but to provide power to the different parts of our country so that our country will have power", the Vice President added.

Prof. Osinbajo assured Nigerians that "President Buhari has a plan, and he is an honest man, and he is making sure that he executes that plan".

In a related development, the Vice President on Tuesday inaugurated the Buhari Media Centre; continued the Family Chat series, all in Gwarimpa and also interacted with artisans and traders at the UTC complex and the Tipper Garage market, all in the FCT.

At the UTC Plaza in Area 10 – a popular printing hub in the FCT, the Vice President paid a visit to artisans and traders, interacting with them on the activities and programmes of the Federal Government.

On arrival at the plaza, the Vice President was welcomed amidst cheers and dancing by the mammoth crowd.

Prof. Osinbajo interacted with some artisans and traders at the plaza, assuring them of a better Nigeria with President Buhari on the saddle beyond 2019.

Earlier in Gwarimpa, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated the Buhari Media Centre in Abuja and had a brief interaction with Nigerians via a live Facebook interview on the activities and programmes of the Buhari administration.

He said: "there is no reason why young Nigerians can't be trained and equipped for outsourced jobs from big technology firms around the world to troubleshoot and handle customer care questions and be paid by those global tech firms. This explains the Federal Government's push towards technology."

The Vice President emphasized that the business of improving Nigeria's economy is not just by talking and wondered why "those trying to come back did nothing, for example, to fix the Lagos-Ibadan expressway or the Second Niger Bridge for which there was not even a design until the Buhari presidency did it".

He also made an unscheduled stop at the Tipper Garage Market in Gwarimpa where he interacted briefly with traders, shoppers and people in the market, many of whom received him with cheers and singing in what was an exciting atmosphere.

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 06:41 AM PST

Mustapha Adekunle

Earlier on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, had met with leaders of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Road Transport Employers Association (RTEAN) where all parties agreed to eschew violence before, during and after the election.

The Command, therefore, expressed disappointment at the incident, stating that it was surprising that a prominent member of NURTW would attempt to violently disrupt a peaceful political rally.
"In view of the development, the Command wishes to encourage members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of Mustapha Adekunle popularly known as Seigo to report such at the nearest police station.
The rally which was the campaign flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos ended abruptly as violence broke out mid-way into the well-attended programme.
Hoodlums suspected to be members of the National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW) invaded the Skypower Ground Ikeja venue with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons, engaging one another in a bloody factional fight.
The situation sent panic across the campaign ground as party members ran in different directions to avoid being hit by bullets being fired indiscriminately by the hoodlums.
Security operatives had a hectic time controlling the situation.
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, who was making a speech, had to leave the stage immediately and was whisked out of the venue together with his deputy, Mrs Idiat Adebule, the APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, and other prominent members of the party.
Several people were injured in the violence, including two journalists who sustained minor bullet wounds.
NAN correspondent who was at the venue could not ascertain if there was any loss of life at the time of filing this report.

Trump: Fact Check on Wall funding crisis

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 06:22 AM PST

Donald Trump
President Trump used his first prime-time address from the Oval Office to make the case for his controversial border wall.
The president's demand for $5.7 billion in wall funding — and Democrats' opposition — has led to a partial shutdown of the federal government.
Here we check some of the arguments made by the president and top Democrats in their response.
Trump's Speech
Claim 1: Humanitarian and security crisis
"There is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our Southern border."
Fact check: Illegal border crossings in the most recent fiscal year (ending in September 2018) were actually lower than either 2016 or 2014 and much lower than at their peak around 2000. The number of unauthorized border-crossers is also dwarfed by the number of people who overstay their visas. But there has been a spike in crossings in the past few months, topping 60,000 in both October and November. And while illegal crossings are still well below the levels of a generation ago, the makeup of the traffic has changed. There are now many more children and families from Central America, who present different challenges than single adults from Mexico.
Many of the Central American migrants are seeking asylum, citing a fear of violence or persecution back home. While the majority of these asylum claims are ultimately rejected, assessing them can take months or years. In the past, asylum-seekers were typically released into the U.S. during this period, a practice the Trump administration criticizes as "catch and release." The administration wants to detain migrants while their asylum claims are adjudicated. This has led to overcrowded detention centres. And under a court order, young migrants generally cannot be detained for more than about 20 days. (The administration tried to get around that last year with its ill-fated and short-lived family separation policy, to allow indefinite detention of adults while children were turned over to the Health and Human Services Department or resettled with family members.) Importantly, most asylum-seekers turn themselves into U.S. authorities, which they could do with or without a border wall.
Claim 2: Driving down jobs and wages
"All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages."
Fact check: The effect of illegal immigration on wages has been studied extensively, and conclusions vary quite a bit. Because of the underground nature of the problem, hard evidence can be hard to come by. Some evidence exists that because illegal immigrants tend to be low-skilled, they compete with native-born workers and can lower wages for those at the bottom of the income scale. But they can also reduce the cost of production in some industries, which can mean lower prices for Americans as a whole. Indeed, many employers complain that in today's tight labour market, the shortage of immigrant labour is driving up their costs. As for the president's claim that illegal immigrants drain public resources, many studies have concluded that while illegal immigrants may also drive up the cost of government services in some places, they also make up for it by paying taxes.
Claim 3: ICE arrests
"In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records including those charged [with] or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes and 4,000 violent killings. Over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country."
Fact check: The president is right about the total number of arrests of immigrants with criminal records that ICE has arrested over the past two years. But that number alone is misleading because many of those of immigrants have very likely committed immigration-related offences rather than violent crimes as the president is suggesting.
Trump has frequently pointed to sympathetic crime victims to justify his crackdown on illegal immigration. But experts say the president's rhetoric overstates the threat posed by immigrants, who tend to commit crime at lower rates than people who are born in the United States — including murder and other violent crimes.
Claim 4: Illegal drugs
"Our Southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs. … My administration has presented Congress with a detailed proposal to secure the border and stop the criminal gangs, drug smugglers and human traffickers. It's a tremendous problem."
Fact check: According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, most illegal drugs imported to the U.S. from Mexico are smuggled through legal ports of entry. Only a small fraction comes through parts of the border that would be covered by a wall.
Claim 5: Wall paid for by Mexico
"The wall will also be paid for, indirectly, by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico."
The president is referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was signed by the leaders of the three countries on Nov. 30, 2018. In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly claimed that the new pact would usher in huge economic benefits, essentially making up for the cost of the wall. The problem with that is twofold: First, the agreement has to be approved by Congress, and that's not a sure thing, so presumptions about how much money it will bring in are premature. Second, many economists say the new agreement is at best a modest reworking of the North American Free Trade Agreement and are sceptical about its economic benefits. Typical was Phil Levy of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, who wrote that "there is very little in the USMCA to suggest it will create an economic growth spurt in the United States."
Claim 6: $5.7 billion request
"Law enforcement professionals have requested $5.7 billion for a physical barrier. At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall. This barrier is absolutely critical to border security."
Fact check: The administration's latest request — presented to lawmakers over the weekend — seeks $5.7 billion for 234 miles of "new physical barrier," which works out to about $24 million per mile. That's a shift from December when Homeland Security said it wanted $5.7 billion to secure 215 miles of the border but only 100 miles of that was expected to be a new barrier. The rest would go to restoring existing walls and fences. The switch from concrete to steel was not made at the request of Democrats.
In addition, the administration is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars for additional border guards, immigration judges, detention beds and "to ensure the well-being of those taken into custody."
Democrats' Response
Claim: Democrats and the president want border security
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: "Make no mistake. Democrats and the president both want stronger border security. However, we sharply disagree with the president about the most effective way to do it."
Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the president's proposed border wall as costly, ineffective and immoral. "We're not doing a wall," Pelosi said. "A wall is immorality between countries." Though, as the president noted, congressional Democrats including Schumer have at times supported border barriers in the past. Nearly 700 miles of wall and fencing have already been built along the U.S. border with Mexico since 2006. Some have argued that where walls make sense, they have already been built and where they haven't been built, they don't make sense. Each party is seeking to blame the other for the partial government shutdown. According to a new Reuters/Ipsos Poll, 51 per cent blame the president, an increase of 4 points from a similar poll just before Christmas. The same poll found only about 4 in 10 Americans support the idea of additional fencing along the border, and support has fallen since 2015. Among Republicans, however, support for the wall is stronger, with 77 per cent supporting additional fencing and 54 per cent approving of a shutdown as a means to that end.

Okowa begins roads, bridges in Delta creeks

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 06:09 AM PST

Ifeanyi Okowa On Road Work Inspection
Delta state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has promised to build roads and bridges in creeks and riverine areas in Delta state.

Okowa after inspecting the N2 billion Effurun-Otor/Ovwor Bridge took to his official twitter handle @GovIfeanyiOkowa to disclose the plans of his administration for the riverine areas.

He wrote: "When we make promises, we try as much as possible, relying on God to keep the promise; no part of Delta State should be deprived of basic amenities, that is why we are constructing roads in the creeks and soon, we shall be commissioning more projects in the riverine communities.

After inspecting the bridge, Okowa expressed satisfaction at the extent of work done and the pace of the work.

Later in a statement issued by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Okowa described the multi-billion naira Effurun-Otor/Ovwor Bridge as very vital as it will meet the yearnings of the people to have access roads to their communities.

The people of the impacted communities in Ughelli South local government area virtually turned the inspection visit to campaign rally as they rolled out drums, singing and justifying why Governor Okowa should be re-elected unopposed.

In a brief interview, Governor Okowa recalled, "there was a time we came to inspect the road project and the people sent a delegation drawing our attention to the river which they must cross with a canoe to meet their kits and kin.

We looked at their plight and it is a thing of joy that we made the right decision; my joy is that the people are happy with what we are doing."

When we make promises, we try as much as possible, relying on God to keep the promise; no part of Delta State should be deprived of basic amenities, no matter who is involved that is why we are constructing roads in the creeks, very soon, we shall be commissioning more projects in the riverine communities," he said, adding,

"From what we can see, the bridge is 80 per cent completed and the contractor has promised to complete in February, which is the major work as the access roads can only be constructed once the bridge is ready."

Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye disclosed that the bridge and road projects would cost more than N2 billion.

"I am proud to be part of this government, our Governor, Senator Okowa is committed, very passionate about road construction, he believes the communities in the state should be linked by road because of the socio-economic benefits of having good roads."

One of those who spoke at the project site, described Gov. Okowa as the Roadmaster, saying that he was 'God Sent',

"He has given us a road, vehicles can now get to our communities, we believe those who are contesting against him will step down, because, it is the turn of Delta North to complete two terms and we are comfortable with Dr Okowa as our Governor."

2019 Election: Goodluck Jonathan speaks on alleged ‘working’ against PDP

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:59 AM PST

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's ex-president, has dismissed the allegations that he and his wife, Patience are working against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Bayelsa State.

Jonathan, who dismissed the claim with a wave of the hand, described those behind it as being dishonest.

Jonathan's kinsmen under the auspices of Ogbia Renaissance, OR, had accused the former President of anti-party activities, saying that they had proof that he was angry that his preferred candidates lost out in the National Assembly and House of Assembly primaries.

But speaking with the Sun Newspapaer, through his media aide, Ikechuckwu Eze, Jonathan insisted that he was not part of any plot to undermine the PDP in Ogbia and Bayelsa East in the forthcoming elections.

He said, "It is manifestly dishonest, deceitful and preposterous for anybody to suggest that former president Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is working against the interest of the party on which he rose to occupy the highest office in the land.

"As one of the leaders of the party, having served as president on the platform of the People's Democratic Party, it is obvious that Dr. Jonathan has continued and will continue to work for the success of PDP across the nation.

"He is also a father-figure and a statesman whose door is open to all Nigerians desirous of visiting or consulting him on sundry matters, including politics. Even then, he has always given his support and blessing to his party's candidates in all elections."

2019 Presidency: Buhari Enjoys ‘cult-like’ Followership; Ekweremadu, PDP Govs Supporting Him – BMO

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:50 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari
The Buhari Media Organisation, BMO, has declared that no politician in Nigeria enjoys a "cult-like" followership like President Muhammadu Buhari.

BMO said Buhari's cult-like followers was reason the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, South East governors and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were supporting Buhari.

In a statement by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, BMO hailed what it described as the "legendary integrity" of Buhari.

BMO wondered why it was increasingly difficult for PDP candidates to identify with their presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the forthcoming election.

The statement reads: "It is a known fact that there is no living politician with the cult-like followership and support Buhari has in some parts of the country as a result of his legendary integrity, so it is not a surprise that several PDP candidates in Northern Nigeria have been openly canvassing for the President's re-election, Daily Post reports.

"The question begging for answer is: why are these candidates not campaigning for Atiku Abubakar or put his image on their campaign posters?

"We are aware of some disquiet among APC members on seeing the picture of the President with Governor Amosun and the APM candidate on the front page of national dailies after the weekend meeting at the Presidential villa.

"But just as the Presidency has made it clear that the President would only back APC candidates, we don't see the meeting as a contradiction of the stance.

"It in fact shows the acceptability that President Buhari enjoys across party lines as opposed to the recent stage-managed endorsement of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP Atiku Abubakar by insignificant political parties and politicians with no real electoral value.

"Although the meeting was meant to be one where the governors were to show appreciation for federal government projects in the region, especially the contract award for the second Niger Bridge, it came at a time the political figures were at odds with their parties.

"On individual basis, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, has publicly left no one in doubt about his positive relations with the President whom he has hailed on several occasions for the infrastructural strides in the region, and of late his Enugu counterpart Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had been pictured wearing a lapel pin with President Buhari's image.

"What is now left is for the governors and Senator Ekweremadu to be pictured with the viral 4 + 4 hand sign."
