''The Minority Report'' album, The legacy of Rooftop Mcs

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Rooftop Mcs
Show Dem Camp is Nigeria's prominent rap duo who have displayed a rare level of skill, consistency and artistry, but long before their emergence was the legendary group called the Rooftop Mcs.

The duo of Adekunle Adeyoola [Soul Snatcha] and Olaitan Hughes [So Kleva] together known as Rooftop Mcs (The name taken from Matthew 27: 10) made a splash on the scene in 2002 with the song 'Shock Therapy' from the same titled album released in 2003, but their biggest industry success would arrive four years later with the release of the smash single, 'Lagimo.'

With the turn of the new millennium, listeners of not just gospel music but Hip-hop on the Nigerian scene recognized the phenomenal feats of the duo for how they fused rap with Alternative Rock Music and a bit of Fuji to create their lane.

 Rooftop Mcs
Rooftop MCs, who have over five projects to their name lead the rank as the pioneer Alternative pair in the modern era of Nigeria's pop music. They describe their vision as one that emphasizes the fact that Christianity is a lifestyle and not a religion and they found balance scoring commercial triumphs in bringing a thrilling newness to how young music lovers can identify with the message of Christ.

Released in 2008; religion, morality and spirituality are the prominent features on the 11 track sophomore album and arguably the most successful , ''The Minority Report.'' [Perhaps named after the 2002 Tom Cruise classic movie]

The album opens with the hit single, 'Lagimo' featuring producer Cobhams Asuquo, a song that talks about dealing with fame and not missing one's purpose on earth as Kleva rhymed, ''You gave me the music, but I abused it, music brought fame and yes I misused it...''

My best memories of this song outside its captivating video is watching clips of them performing it at the 2008 Headies Awards and the standing ovation they received from everyone in the hall as Cobhams Asuquo went on his knees delivering his verse epitomizes everything that a classic record stands for.

The song was nominated in the 'Best Rap Single' category at the awards.

The follow-up track, 'Chop Your Mouth' is another favorite as they address music fans who don't know the lyrics to a song but are always eager to sing along when in the crowd. On the Frenzy produced, 'Elenu', they take it to the street, tapping into the popular slang, rapping in a mix of English and Yoruba as they reply their critics and take a moment to roll out their contributions to the game.

There are songs like 'Foolish' and 'Real Bling Bling' where they switch it up a bit with their flow, while 'Silence', the first single from the album is another song that stands out not just because of its relatability but the sheer brilliance.

From the rolling drums to the infectious hook, Rooftop reinstates the old prophetic saying that ''silence is the best answer for a fool'', and almost 11 years later, some of their lyrics still ring true of present human actions.

''Funny how some people stand on the sideline, make their choices, then they decide mine, it's not the best one, so they suggest one''

'Still Got Game' featuring Protek sees Rooftop showing that they could also hold their own as lively Mcs spitting over Boom Bap beat. The reverb-heavy guitars and drums laced 'True Identity' talks about not losing oneself in the allures of the world.

The album comes to its close with two bonus joints in 'The Second First Impression' and 'Shock Therapy', a song which typifies everything the duo stand for, sonic explorers who stretch the confines of their creativity and yet attain commercially appealing results without losing the most important part of their ministry, the message.

Rooftop Mcs were the hip-hop boundary breakers that long proved that your love for rap should not in anyway limit one from spreading the gospel and the pair displayed a chemistry that made more noticeable each others strengths.

''The Minority Report'' outside birthing a number of hit records, delivers amazing material from start to finish with very little moments of superfluity.

The album, which ranks as the best in their catalog, one that have stood the test of time, is created in a place where there are no rules, only purpose and conviction and over a decade later, it offers forth not just as an uplifting body of work but at the same time accomplishes a marriage between Hip-Hop and living for God over streetwise themes and production.

DJ Lambo steps down as Choc Boi Nation president, leaves label

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 10:30 PM PST

DJ Lambo

Things may not be rosy in the Chocolate City house as Pulse can exclusively report that foremost disc jockey, DJ Lambo is stepping down as President of the Choc Boi Nation unit.

According to reports emanating from one of the country's longest existing record label, it appears that DJ Lambo (real name Olawunmi Okerayi), who refers to herself as "Nigeria's foremost female DJ" would quit the label after the expiration of her present contract.

A source close to the Chocolate City camp, who requested anonymity confirmed to us that, ''She informed them that she no longer wanted to renew her contract and the minute she said it, there were very few objections, so the question was, what is the best way to let her go and sorting details of her contract.''

The label is not seeking to tie people down in situations that they don't want to be. It seems they are open to allow anyone who is no longer interested in the label's vision to exit as amicably as they can.''

Pulse reached out to DJ Lambo for an official statement earlier today and she responded saying, ''I will get back to you.''

However, we are yet to get any feedback as at the time of publishing.

DJ Lambo has been with the Chocolate City since 2015, when she officially moved from Loopy Records, where she led for two years.

She then assumed the position of President of the flagship arm of the company, Choc Boi Nation, in June 2017 following several changes.

The changes also saw the emergence of MI Abaga as the new CEO of Chocolate City Music replacing Audu Maikori, the lawyer and entrepreneur who led the label for 10 years. And Maikori assuming the role of overseeing the Chocolate City Group.

Upon its emergence, Chocolate City promptly became one of the leading labels in the country with the successes of its artists like MI, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz and Brymo. The label has also been home to the likes of Pryse, Nosa, Dice Ailes, Koker, Ruby Gyang, Loose Kaynon and more.

But in recent years, the label has been affected by an exodus of some of its major names while constantly criticized for its lack of promotion and marketing of the remaining ones.

2019 Election: INEC Gives Update On Court Order Against APC Candidates in Rivers

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 05:30 PM PST

INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it will not hesitate to implement the order of court restraining the commission from listing candidates of the All Progressives Congress for the general elections in Rivers State.

INEC National Electoral Commissioner in charge of Operations, Festus Okoye in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, said INEC will delist names of the candidates of the APC after studying finding merit in the judgement.

Okoye also said INEC was not concerned about the different interpretations of the judgement, adding that the commission has a team that will study the judgement and advice on the line of action.

According to him, "We are not interested in the conundrum in Rivers State. What we have said is that the moment any properly constituted court of law makes an order or gives a judgement and we obtain a certified true copy of that particular judgement and we confirm that it is a judgement from a properly constituted court of Law and that the judgement affects any of our processes we will give effect to that particular judgement. This applies across board.

"There is what we call the ratio of a matter. Why we insist on obtaining court judgments and studying it before giving effect to them is because we do not want to rely on the reportage on the pages of newspapers or posts on social media.

"We want to know the ratio and the obiter in the matter before the court and what were the orders of the court as it relates to the matter before it."

Recall that Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt issued a restraining order on INEC not to recognise any candidate of the APC for the general elections in Rivers State.

2019 Election: Oyo State; 1,004,577 Unclaimed PVCs Still In Our Custody – INEC Cries Out

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 05:07 PM PST

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Oyo State has said that no fewer than one million, four thousand, seven hundred and seventy seven Permanent Voter's Cards (PVCs), were still in the custody of the commission five weeks to the general elections.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Barrister Mutiu Agboke, made this declaration during the inaugural meeting of Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) held on Thursday in Ibadan, the state capital.

Agboke, while speaking, said that the final list of governorship and House of Assembly candidates that will reflect the withdrawal, replacement and substitution of candidates done by the various political parties in Oyo State will be published on January 31.

Agboke lamented that out of the 2,934, 107 registered voters in the state, "only 1, 958, 069 have collected their permanent voter cards, leaving 1, 004, 577 cards uncollected".

He called on the owners of the unclaimed PVCs to utilize the available window for collection to visit INEC office in the local government areas and other designated areas, Daily Post reports.

The REC, who said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was ready for the elections, tasked the heads of security agencies in the committee to ensure adequate security for all ad hoc staff, INEC offices, and election materials as well as provide peaceful atmosphere for voting.

While charging the security agencies to identify flashpoints and sponsors of electoral violence, he urged them to be committed to "securing the registration area centres where the corps members recruited to serve as presiding officers and assistant presiding officers will be camped overnight."

He assured stakeholders that smart card readers, which he said had been upgraded for better performance and efficiency, would be deployed for voter verification and authentication during the election.

He promised to engage with traditional rulers and religious leaders as part of efforts to step up voter mibilisation and sensitization.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Odude, who co-chairs the committee with the REC, assured that the security agencies would deal with any threat that might happen before, during and after the election.

He added that, "I don't see them as a big threat. They could be some threat, but we are working on them.

"We have mapped out strategies with which we are going to deal with them. The skirmishes that happened can't directly now be linked with anything political. They are just thugs in about three areas."

2019 Budget: See What Lagos Assembly Said Ambode Must Do

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 04:57 PM PST

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday insisted that Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode must appear before it and properly present the 2019 Appropriation Bill in line with legislative procedure and constitution.

This resolution followed observations raised at its sitting, after the Clerk of the House, Mr Azeez Sanni, read a correspondence from Ambode on the presentation of the Year 2019 Budget.

Sanni said that Ambode's letter on presentation of Year 2019 Appropriation Bill, dated Dec. 17, 2018, was received on Dec. 28, 2018.

Raising an observation on the correspondence, Mr Yinka Ogundimu, the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, said that Ambode had not properly presented the budget.

Ogundimu, who noted that the House delayed its December break to receive the budget, said that the procedure of Ambode's presentation of budget totally deviated from the norms of the House.

According to him, the House's intention was to receive the budget before the short break.

He urged the House to address the issue.

"It is in the habit of this house to always go on break in December, which we purposely delayed for a while before we went on that short time break.

"Our intention was to really receive the budget and go on a short break and come back to treat the budget, but the budget was never received from the governor until we went on holidays.

"The letter came on Dec. 28, about three days to the New Year; there was nothing this House could do.

"This is a new dimension to receive correspondence of this nature at this time.

"We have a tradition that the Governor will come around and lay the budget before that House.

"We look at that whole process and it deviates from the norms and procedure of the House,'' Ogundimu said.

He said that his observation as Chairman, House Committee on Finance became necessary to address the confusion surrounding the 2019 budget presentation.

"We are not the one delaying the budget. The normal thing is for the governor to present the budget,'' he said.

Earlier, Mr Lanre Ogunyemi, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, said that the correspondence of the governor could not be considered as budget presentation.

Ogunyemi said that the House sacrificed the six-week recess for two weeks to receive the budget which never came till the House went on break.

"Now, the constitution is very clear that the budget must be laid before the House, and let nobody embrace the impression that this House is not alive to its responsibilities; we have always been very committed.

"Even if the governor brought it on Dec. 28, the second reading cannot come until January, if it is assumed that the governor's presentation was the first reading.

"If the governor has not come, there is nothing the House can do. The House has always been responsible and alive to all its responsibilities,'' he said.

Other lawmakers took turns to say that the governor had deviated from the tradition of the state, reiterating that the House had not abdicated its responsibilities.

The Majority Leader of the House, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, said that the constitution mandated the governor to lay the budget before the House before the end of the financial year.

"It should be laid before the House of Assembly; it is a document that the governor should speak to. So, this procedure must commence.

"Budget of the state must be laid properly in line with the legislative procedure and constitution –Section 121. The House is ready to work anytime.

"It is clear that we were ready to work on the budget before the Christmas break, but we could not work on it because we did not get it in time,'' he said.

Agunbaide urged the House to handle the situation "in a usual family way and relate appropriately to make sure that the executive gets the procedure''.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, commended the lawmakers for being mature in their reactions to the development.

"This is not the time for resentment, acrimony and agitation.

"We must have at the back of our minds that we have a stake that is beyond May 29.

"We must do everything possible to sustain and to hold in high esteem what is called government, party and people of Lagos, though those who have a very short stake can afford to do anything they like, even in the name of budget presentation.

"You have all shed light on the issue in a mature manner," he said

The speaker said that the house went on break on Dec. 18, 2018 and thee first call he received on the budget was on Dec. 24.

This, he said, was on the willingness of the executive to present the budget on Dec. 24, while the lawmakers had proceeded on short break.

"We normally go on break for six weeks, but we went on break for two weeks in recognition of the fact that there might be need to receive the budget,'' he emphasised.

According to him, there is no reason to shift the blame on the House that it refused to receive the budget.

"People were already in the mood of New Year celebration when the letter came on Dec. 28.

"We are always ready and there is no reason for us to reject the budget when it is done properly and when the executive is ready to present it.

"The essence of coming here is to do this job and we are representing the interest of our people, and we will always do that.

"So, there is no fault at the doorstep of the Assembly.

"We have a huge stake and we must protect that. We have no resentment, we have no bad blood. We are ready to receive that budget when the executive is ready.

"The head of the executive must be ready to come and perform his constitutional responsibility and we are also ready to receive him,'' Obasa said.

He said that nobody else could present the budget according to section 121 of the constitution except the governor.

2019 Election: Governor Amosun Discloses Why APC Leaders Are After Him

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 04:21 PM PST

Ibikunle Amosun, Governor of Ogun State
Ibikunle Amosun, the Governor of Ogun State, on Thursday claimed he is being castigated by some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), because of his achievements and commitment to the development of Abeokuta, the state capital, ahead of other regions in the State.

Amosun stated this during the kick-off of his ward-to-ward senatorial campaign, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun Central Senatorial District.

According to him, no right-thinking Governor would abandon the capital to remain the glorified condition it was, before he became Governor in 2011.

Amosun said: "Why am I being castigated? Abeokuta was made the State capital over 40 years ago and the only offence I have committed is to have developed Abeokuta but I tell you, no sane governor will neglect Abeokuta, else that governor will see the result.

"I have never neglected other areas. We have one of the best flyovers and roads of our administration in Sagamu, there are two flyovers in Ijebu Ode with good roads and the same things are done in Ijebu Igbo and Yewa.

"What we've done is that when we do three things in Abeokuta, we do two or one in other places and we are running round day and night to get this done.

"I am not the first governor in Ogun State but I appreciate what they've done but if anybody castigates me? No governor worth his salt will abandon Abeokuta."

He solicited the votes of people in all the wards, appealing to them not to trade their Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs) for monetary gains.

"Don't be deceived into trading your PVC, they will come with promise of loans and grants requesting for your PVC number, tell them they are thrives and criminals, ask them where they have been since all these years that they are now coming on the eve of the election," he added.

Dogara Attack Northern Leaders, Elites For Not Criticizing Buhari As They Did To Jonathan

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 03:44 PM PST

Hon Yakubu Dogara
Hon Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the House of Representatives, has challenged northern Nigerian elders to raise their voices against the endemic insecurity in the region just as they did during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Speaker, said this in Lafia, Nasarawa State, while speaking at the campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday.

Dogara noted that their silence on insecurity in the region could be taken as enabling the poor management of security in the country, especially in the north, a situation that continues to threaten our democracy and the very foundations of the country, Daily Post reports.

He condemned sycophants, who elevate some public office holders to the status of God, saying that by so doing, they bring destruction upon the country and called on all Nigerians to rise up and rescue the country from the clutches of insecurity.

"Just like my last speech to Nigerians that were gathered in a rally like this in Gombe, I said that the 2019 general elections is not about President Muhammadu Buhari, it's not about Atiku Abubakar, but I said it is about you who are gathered here and it will be a referendum on insecurity and hunger in this land.

"On the issue of insecurity, all of us know what is happening in Borno and, unfortunately too, between Abuja and Kaduna, as well as in Zamfara, Katsina, Nassarawa, Benue, Plateau and even Sokoto States.

"Now, I cannot even mention all because it is a general problem in the county, but I was highlighting the states where the problem is more endemic as of now. The issue is this, when this thing was going on under Jonathan, we had Borno elders always speaking.

"Where are the Borno elders now? Where are the leaders of Northern Nigeria now that this problem has become endemic? What are they saying now? Are we not guilty of what we allow? Are we nit reaponsible for the killings by our enabkith to say that enough is enough and demand aa of right that President Buhari puts and end to this or leave if he cant?

"The truth is that if we don't rise up to the endemic challenges now, sooner than later, if things continue this way, we are not going to have a country. So it is our responsibility to rescue Nigeria from the clutches of insecurity. Without security; we would not have a meaningful democracy.

"The sad reality in Nigeria is that by our silence we have condoned those who have been unable to effectively tackle the insecurity in the nation. We have have wittingly become enablers of evil. You know what enablers do? Enablers don't build a country only courageous people do.

"What enablers do is that they instigate the worship of individuals and the office they occupy, they Will confuse such an individual with accolades. You know none of us was built to receive worship, anyone who attempts to receive worship will meet destruction in his wake.

"So that is why we are witnessing destruction in Nigeria, because we have elevated some human beings to the status of God. We now need to rise up and rescue our country from the clutches of insecurity."

Alhaji Atiku Abubukar and President Muhammadu Buhari
The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar on Thursday accused President Muhammadu Buhari of lying that he won't use government resources for his campaign.

Buhari had on Wednesday said he would not allow the use of public funds for the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, however cited alleged instances where the federal Ministry of Information and culture has been producing "campaign materials" for APC, Daily Post reports.

In a statement issued by Paul Ibe, his spokesman, Atiku said: "In negation of the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the Buhari administration and the APC has taken to the illegal deployment of state resources to its advantage for the election.

"We wish to remind President Buhari and the APC that the use of state videos released by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture is illegal under the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

"The media is awash with advertisements with the hashtag #PMBDIDIT and signed by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and referencing so-called achievements of the APC administration in the states of Abia, Kwara, Lagos, Ebonyi, Delta and Kano, among others.

"These are without doubt 2019 presidential campaign materials produced by the Ministry of Information and Culture using state resources and apparatuses to benefit President Buhari."

2019 Election: Oshiomhole Address Press, After Meeting With President Buhari

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 03:02 PM PST

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council says it will cover all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) within the stipulated campaign period.

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, APC National Chairman,  said this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents at the end of the maiden meeting of the Council, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that the meeting reviewed the programme of activities and calendar of campaigns for the presidential campaign.

According to him, the APC intends to campaign across the length and breadth of the country, to canvass for votes for the party at all levels, Daily Post reports.

Oshiohmole added that the campaign train would continue to remind Nigerians that the Buhari administration had done a lot for the country, having inherited a battered economy from previous administration.

"The key issue was to go through the programme of activities, calendar of campaigns, various interest groups within the country, the business community, the youth, women, people with disabilities and various special interest groups.

"The whole country is Mr President's constituencies. So, he will have to visit each of the 36 states with appropriate message.

"You know in the country today, given the challenges of survival tends to forget where we are coming from; they just look at where we are.

"There is a saying that except you know and remember where you are coming from, you cannot appreciate where you are.

"Even in the life of a man, those who look at those in their front will never thank God enough but when you look at your back and see those behind then you will appreciate that you have made a lot of progress.

"So, you need to constantly remind Nigerians of what happened in the last 16 years and what has changed over the past three and half years, and what will change even more over the next four years, if given the mandate to continue and consolidate,'' he said.

Yoga coupled with AI

AI coupled with advanced audio and display technologies is making Lenovo's next-gen Yoga computers their smartest yet. Whether you're a digital nomad, business professional, digital content creator, or designer, the technologies in the new Yoga S940, Yoga A940, Yoga C730 with AMOLED and Yoga Mouse with Laser Presenter can help you get things done faster and make life easier.

The Slim and Smarter Yoga S940

The Yoga S940 ultra-slim Windows 10 laptop delivers security and privacy without sacrificing productivity and convenience thanks to an entire suite of Lenovo Smart Assist AI-enabled features. Leveraging AI, this includes the option to automatically filter out most ambient noise and blur out distracting backgrounds during video calls. The minute you turn your head away from your laptop screen, the Yoga S940's AI-powered sensors can detect your absence and auto-lock the display to protect your data from others seeing it. It can also detect and alert you when a nosey neighbour is shoulder surfing from your screen, or help increase productivity by shifting open windows and content contextually to a connected external monitor, based on your attention, intent and focus. The new Yoga S940 is also the world's first laptop with Contour Glass that wraps around its bezels – reducing the look of its already razor-thin bezels for a streamlined design.

Get Creative on the Powerful Yoga A940

For artists and designers, nothing is better than sketching with a pencil on paper, right? The new Yoga A940 all-in-one desktop is here to challenge that notion. Built for digital content creators, the Windows 10 Yoga A940 is a powerful creative canvas with a large 27-inch optional 4K IPS touchscreen display with Dolby Vision, which brings entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. It features a rotating hinge that enables the display to tilt to a comfortable 25-degree drafting mode, for remarkable flexibility and stability when drawing, sketching or annotating with a digital pen. It also features the Lenovo Precision Dial, a controller that's, according to the company, tailormade for designers, photographers and videographers to make more precise selections and adjustments to their content. With Lenovo Smart Assist AI-enabled features, a Dolby Vision-enabled 4K wide-angle display with stunning brightness, contrast, color and detail, and boosted by Dolby Atmos Speaker System for rich, moving audio, the Yoga A940 is the ideal centrepiece in any content creator's home or workspace.

See the Difference on the Yoga C730 with AMOLED

Equipped with JBL speakers and Dolby Atmos which delivers immersive audio over any pair of compatible headphones, the 15-inch Yoga C730 2-in-1 convertible laptop gets an upgrade with up to a 4K AMOLED display. AMOLED brings a noticeably more vivid viewing experience with an incredible degree of colour clarity and contrast for higher-quality resolution. It also emits less harmful blue light – making it easier on the eyes while providing amazing video picture quality. Portable and powerful, the Yoga C730 features 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processors, Windows Ink™ for digital pen input, Windows Hello™ for instant log-in, and the smart convenience of Cortana® and Alexa.

Just Twist and Point with the Yoga Mouse with Laser Presenter

As revealed by Lenovo, today's professionals have more than enough to carry with them when running from one meeting to the next – from their laptops to phones, chargers and more. With this user pain point in mind, Lenovo streamlined two accessories into one and designed the latest generation Yoga Mouse with Laser Presenter. With just one twist, it converts from an ergonomic mouse with up to 1,600 DPI for high-precision tracking on nearly any surface into a flat, fully functional laser presenter (and vice versa). No more fumbling with a handful of devices at your next presentation with the latest Yoga Mouse in hand.

Data Science Introduced To South African High Schoolers For The First Time

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 06:50 AM PST

Data Science Introduction To  High School Student
The EXPLORE Data Science Academy (EDSA) has announced an online course and a series of data science competitions aimed at making 'job future' skills available to South African high school students in another local first.

In late 2017, the EDSA made headlines when it announced 100 free data science leadership sponsored by BCX for its 12-month Accredited Skills Data Science Programme in 2018. This leadership have since increased to 300 in 2019.

Now from February 11, scholars between Grades 10 and 12 can access 'Data Science for High School' online. Priced at just R249 a month, the 10-month course teaches the fundamentals of data science and exposes students to Python programming, data visualisation and some basic machine learning algorithms.

"As an Academy, we're concerned that vital future skills are not being taught at our high schools. We've also priced the course to make it affordable to as broad a spectrum of scholars as possible," said Dippnall, a co-founder of the EXPLORE Data Science Academy.

"The jobs of the future are very different to today," Dippnall adds. "To succeed in 2025 youngsters will need to be creative problem solvers who write code and are able to solve complex software algorithms.

Data Science for High School is intended to do just that. From February 11, motivated scholars can begin accessing the course material, which will involve between five and seven hours of self-study a week," Dippnall says.

Although the course is purely online, instruction material is supplemented by videos and assessments to help guide the student. Regular testing will advise students of their progress and provide necessary feedback.

Commenting on the relevance of the course to high school students, Dave Strugnell, EDSA co-founder says: "South Africa's youth should be learning data science skills from as early an age as possible. In many countries, these skills have been introduced into the syllabus at primary school level already."

In addition to the online course, EXPLORE will be holding two competitions later this year, which will involve scholars competing against each other in order to solve complex problems using data science techniques. Entrance is free.

"These will be Kaggle-style competitions where we give scholars a problem, as well supportive data, and a time period to solve it. Whoever builds the best algorithm wins," says Aidan Helmbold, another EXPLORE cofounder.

The winner per competition will earn R10 000. Second prize is R5 000 and the third prize is R2 500.

"As the EXPLORE Data Science Academy, we're excited to lead in mobilising a community of South Africa's youngest and brightest, and to get them solving problems using data science," Dippnall says.

"We're also excited to market this emerging profession so that our youngsters get to see first hand how cool data science is, and then have an option follow a career in this emerging space," he concludes.

Chrome's Ad-block Rolls Out In June

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 06:41 AM PST

Chrome Ad-Block
Google joined the Coalition for Better Ads after their Standards for North America and Europe were published in March 2017 in an attempt to help its Chrome browser in the fight against disruptive advertising.

Chrome's product team have announced that this new ad-blocking feature will be available worldwide on July 9.

Chrome follows the Better Ads Standards, based on research conducted with 66,000 consumers in determining which websites to filter ads on. The Coalition announced in January 2019 that its research supports the adoption of the same Standards worldwide for desktop and mobile web and will help filter out ad experiences that fall beneath a threshold of consumer acceptability.

The coalition has defined 12 types of ads as an intrusive experience for users, four types of desktop web ads and eight types of mobile web ads, including pop-up ads, auto-play video ads with sound, and large sticky ads.

"Consumers worldwide have sent a clear message to the online ad industry about the ad formats that disrupt their experience online," said Stephan Loerke, CEO of the World Federation of Advertisers. "Successful brands will respond to consumers by taking steps to avoid these ad experiences in their marketing plans."

The Coalition for Better Ads announced on January 9 that it is expanding their initial Better Ads Standards beyond North America and Europe to cover all countries, worldwide and following their leadChrome will expand its user protections and stop showing all ads on sites in any country that repeatedly display these disruptive ads.

The 2019 Trends Impacting Mobile On The African Continent

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 06:36 AM PST

Daniel Jaeger
According to the GMSA Mobile Economy 2018 report for sub-Saharan Africa, mobile subscribers rose by 44% in 2017 and this was further bolstered by an increase in smartphone penetration that rose by 75%. Mobile broadband is anticipated to comprise 87% of total connections by 2025 across 690 million smartphones.  According to Joachim Wuilmet, Head of Customer Marketing and Communications MEA at Nokia, Africa is poised at the edge of Revolution, ready to show the rest of the world what it can do with a handful of innovation and a commitment to improving infrastructure.

"People in Africa are increasingly connected and most market players are focused on bringing this connectivity into rural areas and all aspects of society," he adds. "Currently, sub-Saharan Africa is still locked into 2G but this is about to change. The move from 2G to 3G requires significant investment and access to the right devices and technology, but then it becomes easier as 4G is a natural evolution. Currently, it is a 3G and 4G play with 4G launching in some countries," says Wuilmet.

The shift from 2G to 4G on the continent is being driven by both improved infrastructure and access to cost-effective smartphones. This allows for more people to experience the benefits of 3G and 4G in terms of connectivity, efficiency and mobile capabilities.  That said, the continent's slow and steady shift away from 2G doesn't mean that 5G is an afterthought.

"There are some impressive innovations around 5G in Africa and some commercial sites in South Africa have started roll-out already," says Daniel Jaeger, Market Unit Head, Central, East, West Africa at Nokia. "However, we need to keep perspective – we need to reach as many people as possible, migrating them to 3G and increasing smartphone penetration – before we leapfrog to 5G. Africa is poised to take advantage of the latest technologies to ensure modernisation of mobile infrastructure and potential, but it must be done intelligently."

In addition to the connectivity and the platforms, mobile operators will be focusing on software and how to deliver services in more effective ways. Insights gleaned from software and data will see them streamline operations and provide more targeted and relevant solutions.

Jaeger concludes: "Companies are focusing on their backhaul and the new spectrum, looking to strategically build networks in the right places and to take advantage of the technology that's sitting and waiting for the right opportunity to thrive. The continent will be chasing the potential of 5G but the focus will be measured and strategic to ensure uptime, security and long-term capability."

PDP aspirants back Agbaje

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 06:04 AM PST

Jimi Agbaje
Former aspirants who lost in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries to pick candidates for the various elective offices have thrown their weight behind the Lagos State governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje.
A statement issued by the Jimi Agbaje Campaign Organisation (JACO) stated that the decision was reached at a stakeholders' parley between Agbaje and the aspirants.
Although they expressed reservations regarding the outcome of the primary and the unjust substituting of some of the names of some erstwhile victorious aspirants, the PDP members promised to work for the success of the party in the general election scheduled to commence on February 16.
Apart from Agbaje, who was joined by his running mate, Mrs Haleemat Buhari, other leaders of the party present at the meeting include former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe; a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, Hajia Aduke Maina; and the State Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Hassan.
The aggrieved aspirants reeled out series of infractions that characterised the primary, saying despite the perceived lapses, they have resolved to support the party's candidates at the polls.
After listening to their complaints, Agbaje assured them that their sacrifice for the party would not be in vain.
His words: "I am happy to meet all of you today. I am particularly delighted that despite the fact that the primaries didn't go the way you have envisaged, you are still faithful with the cause. I am also happy that you have decided to sacrifice your individual ambitions for the collective good of all Lagosians. The task to liberate our state from the stranglehold of an individual is a collective one.
"It is not about me, but about the people of the state who are bearing the brunt of the rulership of the prevailing order in the state. With the decision you have taken, I am assuring you that you would be carried along as valued stakeholders."
Ogunlewe said the election called for the collective efforts of all to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He added that Agbaje has become the symbol of the struggle and that all stakeholders must rally behind him.
He said: "I am assuring you that the day Agbaje becomes the Governor of Lagos State he will become a watershed in the history of the state. Let all of us rally round him to make sure that he wins."
Maina thanked those present, saying their sacrifices and loyalty would not go unnoticed by the party.
She added: "I understand your plights, all that happened is well known to me but we should all put them behind us in the task of removing the state from the shackles of the oppressors."

Women, youth stage rally for Buhari’s re-election in Kwara

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 05:54 AM PST

APC Campaign In Ilorin
Scores of All Progressives Congress (APC) women and youth have staged a peaceful rally in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital in support of President Muhammadu Buhari's reelection.

The rally started around 9.30 am around the popular Post Office Roundabout in the metropolis and ended at the campaign office of a former APC governorship aspirant Isiak Kawu Modibbo in Sango area.

The procession affected human and vehicular traffic on the popular Muritala Mohammed way, as vehicles were forced to move at snail pace.

The rally was organized by 'Making A Different (MAD)' for Kwara and Kawu Modibbo Group.

In his remark at the event, the state APC Chairman Hon Bashir Bolarinwa urged aggrieved members of the party to forget their grievances and work for the success of the party at polls.

Represented by his vice chairman Abdullahi Samari said "Don't sell your permanent voters' cards to them. Your PVC is your power. If they bring money to collect the money. After all, it is our money. But don't vote them."

Hon Bolarinwa urged other aspirants of the party to emulate the gesture of Isiak Kawu Modibbo.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, wife of Mallam Modibbo Saadat said: "We are here today to mobilize youth and women in support of President Muhammadu Buhari are doing. He has been doing a great job in the country and we need to show people what he has been doing.

"The crowd that accompanied us from Post Office to this place is amazing. It is an assurance that Kwarans are ready for the reelection of President Buhari.

"We are also using this medium to empower some of our members. Kwara state is different from other states. We have been suffering for so long. People need to be empowered, that is why we are giving out some items to some people today.

"We resolved to show our members a specimen of what a voter's card looks like so that they know how. In other words, we are embarking on voters' education, so that they know how to vote on election.

"Kwarans are ready. We don't need any message for them and it has started. We will not stop until election days."

A youth leader, Abdulkarim Popoola said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice Prof Yemi Osibajo is guaranteed.
Said Popoola: "We are here to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari for his walking over in the forthcoming presidential election; because we are very sure that in Kwara state we are going to deliver for the state for him.

"We are also assuring the whole world that President Buhari is coming back again. Four plus for is equalled to eight. That is the reason we organized this rally."
