More trouble for Huawei as Germany considers ban

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:58 AM PST

Huawei
The German government is debating whether to follow the United States and allies like Australia in restricting China's Huawei Technologies from accessing its next-generation mobile networks on national-security grounds.

Some Western countries have barred Huawei [HWT.UL] from their markets after U.S. officials briefed allies that Huawei is at the beck and call of the Chinese state, warning that its network equipment may contain "back doors" that could open them up to cyber espionage. Huawei says such concerns are unfounded.

While no concrete steps have been decided upon, business daily Handelsblatt reported on Thursday that Chancellor Angela Merkel's administration was actively considering stricter security requirements and other ways to exclude Huawei.

Officials were discussing setting security standards that Huawei could not achieve, effectively blocking its participation. Changes to the German telecommunications law were also under consideration as a last resort, the paper said, citing government sources.

No decisions have yet been taken, according to a written answer by the Interior Ministry to a question from lawmaker Katharina Droege of the opposition Greens party.

"The process of reaching a common view on concrete steps has not been completed," said the Interior Ministry's response, which was seen by Reuters.

Europe has become a crucial battleground in a struggle between Beijing and Washington that analysts say could determine which of the two superpowers achieves technological supremacy in the 21st century.

Huawei, once a fast follower of Nordic firms Nokia and Ericsson, is now a $93 billion global market leader in an industry where there is no U.S. champion.

In Washington, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced bills on Wednesday that would ban the sale of U.S. chips or other components to Huawei, ZTE Corp or other Chinese telecommunications companies that violate U.S. sanctions or export control laws.

Germany's Deutsche Telekom announced in December that it would review its vendor strategy and France's Orange said it would not hire the Chinese firm to build its next-generation network in France.

Tensions have been heightened by the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Canada for possible extradition to the United States.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, in a rare public appearance this week, said his company had never received a request from a government to transmit information in violation of any regulations.

Trump directed poll manipulation – Ex-lawyer Cohen

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:47 AM PST

Michael Cohen
Michael Cohen, a former lawyer for U.S. President Donald Trump, said on Thursday he paid a firm to manipulate online polling data "at the direction of and for the sole benefit of" Trump.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Cohen had paid the data firm Redfinch Solutions to manipulate two public opinion polls in favour of Trump before the 2016 presidential campaign.

"As for the @WSJ article on poll rigging," Cohen said on Twitter on Thursday, "what I did was at the direction of and for the sole benefit of @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. I truly regret my blind loyalty to a man who doesn't deserve it."

The attempts to influence the polls ultimately proved largely unsuccessful but does shed a light on the tactics of the Trump campaign and Cohen's role within it. On the campaign trail, Trump frequently referred to his polling numbers to help fuel his candidacy.

Last month Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in making illegal hush-money payments to women to help Trump's 2016 campaign and lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Tower project in Russia

The Journal said Cohen commissioned John Gauger, who runs RedFinch Solutions, to write a computer script to repeatedly vote for Trump in a February 2015 Drudge Report poll on potential Republican candidates. The move came as Trump was preparing to enter the 2016 presidential election race, the newspaper reported.

Trump ranked fifth in the Drudge Report poll, with about 24,000 votes or 5 per cent of the total, according to the Journal.

Cohen also commissioned Gauger to do the same for a 2014 CNBC online poll identifying the country's top business leaders, although Trump was unable to break the top 100 candidates, the Journal reported.

"The president has no knowledge of the polls being rigged," Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said in an interview with Reuters. RedFinch Solutions did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Senate wants FG to immortalise Shagari

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:42 AM PST

Senate House
The Senate has called on the Federal Government to immortalise former President Shehu Shagari by naming a national monument after him.

This followed a motion by Sen. Ibrahim Danbaba (PDP-Sokoto) and co-sponsored by eight others.

Presenting the motion, Danbaba said late Shagari who was sworn in as President on Oct.1, 1979 on the platform of National Party of Nigeria (NPN) promoted national unity.

He added that the deceased executed many projects in the agricultural, housing and industrial sectors.

"Shagari returned to his home town in 1986 and lived in the traditional house where he was born until the federal government provided him with a house in Sokoto.

"He had an unblemished public service record spanning over a period of 30 years.

"He was forthright, a nation builder and a distinguished statesman that contributed greatly to the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria," he said.

The lawmaker said, his loss was a great loss not only to his immediate family but to the entire country.

He urged the Senate to call for a national monument to be named after him.

Contributing, other Lawmakers described the former president as a man of integrity.

Sen. Abdullahi Gumel (APC-Jigawa), described the deceased as a man of noble character, who wanted the best for the country.

The lawmaker, who said he had personal encounters with the deceased, said he was an honest man, who never allowed circumstances to distract him from his responsibilities.

Sen. Shehu Sani (PRP-Kaduna) urged Nigerian leaders to emulate his patriotism and high moral values.

"Nigerians have attested to his character, conduct and personality.

"He exemplified honesty, courage and simplicity. He lived with honour and left with honour.

"He did not make so much noise about his integrity but it was seen from his stewardship and there is a lesson we should learn from this.

"We should learn from the way second republic leaders conducted themselves in the country," he said.

Sen. Barnabas Gemade (SDP-Benue) described Shagarai as a de-detribalized Nigerian, who gave recognition to Northern minorities.

"Shagari was an unsung hero, a shining example of simplicity and honesty.

"Nigerian Leaders should learn from his integrity and honesty and I urge my colleagues to approve these prayers especially the request to immortalise him," Gemade said.

In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over plenary, said Shagari was a national leader.

"He was a nationalist without boundaries, who lived in the heart of people. He lives in the minds and heart of the people no matter where they come from.

"That must be a lesson for all of us as leaders. One of his greatest attributes was his commitment to the unity of Nigeria.

"Even when he won an election with his party, he introduced the concept of a coalition to bring about national unity and he extended hand of fellowship to other political parties.

"I think that was his greatest contribution to the unity of the country," he said.

Ekweremadu said he was a great leader who would be missed dearly.

CBN spurs access to banking services

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:30 AM PST

Godwin Emefiele
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has rolled out measures to ensure that at least 80 per cent of Nigerians have access to banking and other financial services.

The apex bank also on Thursday released new policy frameworks on consumer protection, financial literacy and financial education.

The bank unveiled measures in the National Financial Inclusion Strategy released in Abuja.

Mrs Aisha Ahmad, the CBN Deputy Governor on Financial System Stability, made the presentation at the National Financial Literacy Stakeholders' Conference in Abuja.

"Adequate consumer protection is critical to sustaining the long term viability of the financial sector because consumer protection is a necessary precursor to building and maintaining trust in the formal financial sector.

"An essential pillar of any consumer protection regime is consumer education, which is founded on financial literacy.

"The benefits of a financially literate population are immense. Consumers are better equipped to make optimal choices in the use of financial products, pose lower credit and default risk.

"In addition constitute a market for sustainable financial services and promote Financial System Stability by increasing market demand and responsible use of financial services," she said.

Ahmad said the CBN recently introduced regulations and guidelines for the licensing and operations of Payment Service Banks in furtherance of its efforts to leverage technology to enhance access to financial services for the unbanked.

She said the move was expected to drive down exclusion rates by leveraging a wider variety of multiple channels to enhance access to deposit products, payments and remittance services to small businesses and low-income households.

Meanwhile, the Director, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Mr Kofo Salam-Alada, harped on the importance of promoting a sound financial system in the country to ensure that consumers continue to have confidence in the sector.

"As we seek to boost the number of consumers in the financial industry through the Financial Inclusion Strategy, it is important that we establish policies, structures and programmes that would engender confidence among the general public.

"This is even more imperative considering the fact that we are only just recovering from a financial crisis that brought the financial system on the brink of collapse.

"All the efforts at strengthening the financial system would be fruitless if there are no concerted efforts to restore trust and confidence among consumers," he said.

Salam-Alada revealed that since the consumer protection department was set up, it had successfully recovered more than N68 billion in favour of customers who have been shortchanged by their banks.

Also, the Managing Director, Jaiz Bank, Mr Hassan Usman said that the bank was committed to deepening financial services in the country through its non-interest banking strategy.

He said that the bank was currently engaging with women entrepreneurs in rural areas and giving them small loans to grow their businesses while encouraging them to open accounts.

According to him, the aim is to expose them to bank facilities that will grow their businesses in the near future.

The newly released National Financial Inclusion Strategy proposes roles and responsibilities for key stakeholders in the financial sector to reduce financial exclusion rate from the present 36.8 per cent to 20 per cent by 2020.

The key stakeholders are the Federal Government, the Deposit Money Bank's, Development Finance Institutions, National Insurance Commission, National Pension Commission, National Communication Commission and Nigeria Postal Service among others.

The priority areas identified for the success of the strategy includes "Tiered Know-Your-Customer" regulations, agent banking regulations, national financial literacy strategy and consumer protection.

Wonder why Bisi Alimi is talking about Falz’s ‘Hyprocrite’ track?

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Many songs talking about the common social problems noticeable in Nigeria are featured on Falz's new album "Moral Instruction" but the third track on the project 'Hypocrite' stands out the most for Bisi Alimi.

Bisi Alimi
The gay rights activist posted on Instagram on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, as the conversation about the 9-track project continues.

"This song (Hypocrite) is worth you 4mins today," Alimi notes on IG.

On 'Hyprocrite', Falz makes a case for homosexuals considered bad eggs by the Nigerian law. The act of homosexuality carries a jail term of 14 years for anyone convicted.

Last year, some persons suspected of being gay were subjected to mob justice in eastern states in Nigeria including Imo. And in the west, many reports in the media confirm some raids carried out by the police at locations where gay people are believed to be hiding in Lagos.

"Who are we to crucify the homosexuals?," reads a line from the hypocrite song by Falz.

Falz

Bisi Alimi is never tired of discussing about the rights of gay people. Perhaps this is why the rapper's song has taken his attention.

On "Moral Instruction", Falz also revealed his strong position about transactional sex which has put him on the lips of many since releasing the album on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

Committal hearing against INEC chairman for Friday

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Mahmood Yakubu
For allegedly disobeying a valid court order, the Young Democratic Party (YDP) has asked the Federal High Court in Lagos to commit Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Prof Mahmoud Yakubu to prison.

The party alleged Yakubu refused to recognise its leader Henry Nwabueze as Acting National Chairman.

The case will come up for hearing before Justice Ayokunle Faji Friday.

YDP filed Form 49 against the alleged contemnor inviting him to appear and show cause why he should not be sent to prison for refusing to comply with a November 29, 2018 judgment by Justice Faji.

The Form 49 reads: "Take notice that the defendant will on a date as approved by the Court apply for an order for your committal to prison for having disobeyed the judgment of the Federal High Court by Justice A.O. Faji made on 29th November 2018 enjoining you to recognise the second defendant as the Acting National Chairman, Hon. Henry Nwabueze, of the Young Democratic Party and thereby neglected to obey the said judgment".

Relying on the case of John Ebhodaghe vs Mike Okoye, the applicant's counsel Yemi Akinyeme said an order of committal against Yakubu would be proper and deserving given that he was granted adequate notice to comply with the order.

Quoting former Supreme Court Justice, the late Niki Tobi, the lawyer said obedience to orders of the court is fundamental to the good order, peace and stability of the nation.

He, therefore, asked the court to cite the INEC chairman for contempt as provided by Order 35 Rule1 (2) (b) of the Civil Procedure Rules of the court.

The applicant's counsel further cited Section 72 of the Sheriff's and Civil Process Act: "If a person refuses or neglects to comply with an order of court made against him other than for payment of money, the court instead of dealing with him as a judgment debtor guilty of the misconduct defined in paragraph F of Section 66 of the Act, may order that he be committed to prison and detained in custody until he has obeyed the order."

Court orders police to show cause for detaining Melaye

Posted: 18 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Daniel Dino Melaye
An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama on Thursday ordered the police to show cause over it's continued detention of Sen. Dino Melaye.

Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, who has been in police custody since Jan. 4, approached the court for enforcement of his fundamental right.

Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the order after Melaye's counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) informed the court that his client has been in police custody since Jan. 4 against what the law stipulated.

"We are talking about the liberty of a citizen not because he is a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but a citizen, this is contrary to sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution of Nigeria.

"If you keep a man for 13 days you have already presumed him guilty, " he submitted.

Mr Simon Lough, the respondent counsel, told the court that he only got the motion on notice on Jan. 16, and needed five days according to law to reply.

He added that he was and not aware of the order to show cause.

He said though Melaye was in the police custody, he as the counsel, does not have the power to effect his investigation which was ongoing, preparatory to charging him to court.

Lough therefore prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him file and serve his reply before Jan. 18.

The judge explained that the police was put on notice to come and show cause why the detained senator should not be granted bail.

"The court was approached by the police for his custody and the court granted it, and now the court ordered that the police should come and explain why he would not be released.

"I granted an order on Jan. 14, that the police should come and show cause,'' the judge said.

He, however, adjourned hearing till Jan. 18, to enable the respondent file his reply on the applicant.
Both parties agreed to the application for adjournment prayed by the respondent.

The judge further ordered the respondent to serve the applicant all the processes today.

Cardi B calls out Donald Trump over continuous shut down.

Cardi B slams Donald Trump over government shutdown in new video

Rap Singer Cardi B
It's been almost three weeks since the United States of America's president, Donald Trump shut down the government, leaving federal workers in untold hardship, which has led to Cardi B calling him out for the actions.

The rapper took to her Instagram page on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, where she called him out for leaving the workers stranded. He went on to appear to other Americans to take the shutdown by the government seriously.

"Hey, Y'all i just want to remind you all that this is been a little bit over three weeks, okay, it's a little bit been over three weeks, Trump is now ordering federal government workers to go back to work without getting paid. Now I don't want to hear Y'all motherfuckers say oh but Obama shut down the government for 17 days. Yea Bitch! For health care, so your grandma can check her blood pressure and you bitches can go check your pussy at a gynecologist with no motherfucking problem.

Now I know a lot of you don't care because you don't work for the government or you don't probably have a job, but this shit is fucking serious bro, this shit is crazy like our country is in a hell hole right now...we really need to take this seriously. I feel like we need to take some action, I don't know what time of action bitch, this is not what I do but bitch I'm scared, this is crazy and I really feel mad for these people that gat to go to fucking work to not get motherfucking paid," she said.

Donald Trump's wall and its journey so far

US president Donald Trump
Trump's proposed wall is at the crux of the current government shutdown. In December, after signaling that he would sign a stopgap measure to keep the government funded until February 8, he caved to pressure from some in his base and said he would not sign any bill that doesn't provide $5.7 billion for a border wall.

There was not enough support for the wall in the Senate (60 votes were needed), and so starting on December 22, a partial government shutdown began, impacting roughly 800,000 federal workers. Of those, around 420,000 are considered essential and must work without pay.

Telco System Upgrades Carrier Eternet Network For Kenet Kenya

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Meoli Kashorda
Telco Systems, a provider of innovative SDN/NFV, CE 2.0, MPLS and IP solutions has completed an upgrade of the carrier Ethernet network of Kenya Education Network (KENET), the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Kenya, from 10GE to 100GE.

As the NREN of Kenya, KENET provides high-speed Internet access and data centre services to member university campuses and research facilities across the country and interconnectivity with other NRENs around the world. KENET also provides shared cloud-based services, including co-location of servers, dedicated virtual servers for e-learning systems and video and web conferencing.

Three years ago, Telco Systems supplied KENET with its IP/MPLS technologies that were used to build KENET's 10GE carrier Ethernet network, which was managed and fully orchestrated by an aggregation and demarcation solution.

For this 100GE network upgrade, Telco Systems delivered its T-Metro 8100 service aggregation platform and cloud gateway. T-Metro 8100 provides carrier Ethernet 2.0, MPLS, IP (Layer 3) and SDN capabilities and offers massive service scalability and carrier-class resiliency. T-Metro 8100 includes industry-leading features like QoS, SLA management and OAM. It is built with a modular architecture designed with future expansion capabilities, such as adding compute nodes or new networking capabilities.

For KENET, these T-Metro 8100 devices are managed and orchestrated by Telco Systems' EdgeGenie Orchestrator service provisioning management system, which was also previously deployed in 2013 when Telco Systems originally supplied KENET's carrier Ethernet network.

By upgrading its network capacity to 100GE, KENET has been able to improve the quality of existing services, offer additional advanced services and meet the growing bandwidth requirements of its education and research institution customers and their users.

"We have been working with Telco Systems for five years now and we have developed trust and confidence in the company and its technologies," stated Professor Meoli Kashorda, Executive Director of KENET. "Telco Systems has played a strategic role in the expansion of our network and the services from 1GE to 10GE and now to 100GE and I am certain that the company will continue to do so for many years to come."

"More and more service providers around the world are upgrading their network capacities to 100GE in order to better serve their customers and grow their businesses and we are proud to be supporting KENET in this important move," said Ariel Efrati, CEO at Telco Systems. "We are experiencing strong traction in the education vertical and our T-Metro 8100 solution is well-positioned to help network operators serving this market space, especially the government E-Rate projects in the United States, to upgrade their networks and improve the performance of their services."

Africa Code Week 2018 Touched Over 2million Young Africans

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

African Code Week
Africa Code Week (ACW) 2018 exceeded all expectations by empowering 2.3 million youth across 37 countries with digital and coding skills – compared to 1.3 million youth engaged across 35 African countries in the previous edition.

According to Cathy Smith, Managing Director of SAP Africa, the resounding success of Africa Code Week is a wake-up call unveiling what the young generation actually needs and rightfully expects: "young people in Africa don't just need opportunities: they need to know how to take the first steps to get there. They need role models and guidance."

Capacity building as the cornerstone of youth empowerment

From an initial focus of introducing coding skills to African youth and raising awareness of the importance of digital education, ACW key partners focused and augmented efforts in 2018 to sustain the impact of the programme through capacity-building with governments, schools and NPOs. As a result, close to 23,000 teachers were trained on the ACW digital learning curriculum in the run-up to October 2018 events.

Leveraging Africa Code Week to accelerate nationwide ICT capacity building since 2015, Morocco stands out again this year with a record of 5,208 teachers trained throughout the year 2018. Tunisia and Nigeria follow with respectively 2,800 and 2,553 teachers trained this year.

"There is only one way to bring the promises of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to the young generation: through a reference point, and that reference point is the teacher," says Davide Storti, YouthMobile Initiative Coordinator at UNESCO's Knowledge Societies Division. "We look forward to furthering dialogue with governments, so we can translate the powerful partnerships and networking built by and around Africa Code Week into long-term programmes that sustain the excitement around 21st-century learning."

Fast-growing stakeholder commitment

Launched in 2015 by SAP's Corporate Social Responsibility EMEA department, ACW is an award-winning initiative taking place every year in the month of October. It is now actively supported by key partners UNESCO YouthMobile, Google, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Cape Town Science Centre, the Camden Education Trust, 28 African governments, over 130 implementing partners and 120 ambassadors across the continent.

According to Alexandra van der Ploeg, Head of Global Corporate Social Responsibility at SAP, "fostering powerful partnerships with a sharp focus on capacity building is one of Africa Code Week's strengths, and a solid cornerstone as it strives to not only support UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 ('Ensure quality and inclusive education for all') but also SDG 17 which aims to 'strengthen and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development'.

This fourth edition saw unprecedented collaboration from our public and private sector stakeholders, as well as from NGOs, to train more teachers and reach more young people than ever before," she says.

Supporting Africa Code Week for the third year in a row, Google expanded their grant allocations to support more organisations in their efforts to inspire a new generation of digital African workers. In 2018, Google micro-grants were awarded to 53 non-profit organisations to facilitate teacher training and coding workshops in both urban and rural areas, allowing 100,000+ youth across 11 countries to be exposed to computer science (CS) and coding skills – 57% of which were girls.

Empowering girls, reaching the unreached

More than 46% of this year's 2.3 million participants were female, reflecting a huge appetite for digital skills development among Africa's girls. Dedicated grants came in from key partner BMZ, who has been supporting ACW since 2016 as part of the #eSkills4Girls initiative. This year, BMZ awarded 20 grants to organisations across 15 emerging and developing countries, introducing 13,791 girls to digital skills and employment perspectives. SAP further collaborated with UNESCO and BMZ/GIZ to strengthen the gender component of the Train-the-Teacher package for Africa Code Week.

"Female representation in African companies in STEM-related fields currently stands at only 30%, requiring powerful public-private partnerships to start turning the tide and creating more equitable opportunities for African youth to contribute to the continent's economic development and success," concludes Sunil Geness, Director of Government Relations and CSR at SAP Africa and Global Coordinator of ACW 2018.

More partners joined forces this year to reach youth with special needs or living in remote areas. In Botswana for instance, more than 150 children got to touch a computer and code for the first time using solar-powered devices. Mining company and SAP partner Debswana aligned their own CSR programme to Africa Code Week, engaging 1,181 children at their Orapa Mine alone.

In Mozambique, ACW volunteers joined forces with INAGE and Mapal to train teachers from special needs schools, who in turn were able to introduce coding skills to hundreds of hearing-impaired students. Another highlight came from Cameroon, where Train-the-Trainer sessions were organised in October 2018 for vision-impaired teachers in Yaounde's CMPJ.

Tips On How You Can Reduce Bank Fees In 2019

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Bank Fees
In spite of bank fees accounting for a fraction of the average consumer's income, individuals can still do much more to reduce their cost of banking.

Banking is an important part of our lifestyles and the rapid adoption of smart technology is increasingly propelling the use of mobile banking through apps and other banking platforms.
Ancley Jacobs, CEO of FNB Consumer Core Banking says smart technology has been a game changer for both consumers and banks, due to its ability to improve convenience and safety while significantly reducing the cost of banking. However, he says consumers are barely scratching the surface when it comes to exploiting the benefits of digital platforms for day to day banking.

Jacobs outlines easy ways for consumers to reduce bank fees:

Be cash smart – when it's necessary to use cash, you should rather withdraw at shopping tills for a fraction of the cost.  If you need to use an ATM, it's cost effective to use your bank's ATM to avoid incurring additional charges at other banks.  Alternatively, FNB customers can easily pay anyone with a cellphone number via eWallet Send Money, thereby eliminating the need and costs associated with using cash.

Bank digitally – you don't need to be a tech wizard to bank digitally and the benefits include security, convenience and in some cases, no fees. All banks offer customers the capability to make safe and convenient payments via their cellphone, saving customers the hassle of dealing with cash. Other everyday services provided digitally include checking your balance and even purchasing prepaid airtime. More importantly, banks like FNB will reward you through eBucks and other incentives for banking digitally.

Swipe to purchase – card swipes are free with most banks and consumers can earn rewards on swiping their card for purchases. You can make safer payments through tap and pay functionality which allows you to complete payment without losing possession of your bank card.

Avoid unnecessary fees – Ensure that you always have sufficient funds in your account. An attempt to make purchases or even have your debit orders rejected due to insufficient funds in your account at the time can result in additional fees being levied on your account. FNB offers their customers innovative money management tools via the FNB banking app, giving them the benefit of being able to avoid unnecessary fees.

Keep your eggs in one basket – being multi-banked can cost you more money because you are servicing two accounts and this doesn't give you a single view of how you bank. You should consolidate your banking to ensure that you get maximum benefits at a reasonable cost.

"There is no better time than the beginning of the year to get your financial affairs in order. Getting a handle on bank fees can set you on the right path and create room for you to be more efficient in managing your money," says Jacobs.

2019 iPhones Could Be Jumping On The USB-C Bandwagon

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Apple Products
According to a new report from supply chain blog Macotakara, Apple could be in the process of developing a revised iPod touch.

Further, the report says the 2019 iPhone might make the jump to USB-C, just like the 2018 iPad Pros.
Additionally, the very brief blog post stated that "the next iPhone might also "employ a USB-C connector," though the final design has not yet been confirmed.

Some may find it surprising that at this stage of the game that Apple is still selling the 2015 iPod touch, considering the average smartphone's ability to house impressive libraries of tunes; not even the nano or shuffle are still in production.

This limits the Apple-branded options of younger users who may not yet be allowed to own a smart device to have a music player.

Considering that the latest iPad Pros have made the shift to USB-C, it's not too far-fetched to presume that the next iPhones could join the fad as well, and since the iPod Touch is still on the market, it's about due for a refresh.

Video Streaming Sites
Despite the major infrastructural challenges that Africa faces – such as low connectivity and the high cost of data, the number of video streaming platforms active in Africa has exploded over the past few years as the continent responded to the global shift from linear TV to on-demand viewing.

Online streaming is cheaper and more convenient than traditional cable TV because it gives you an option to watch the programs of your choice at a time convenient to you. Due to flexibility, low cost and convenience many Africans would rather subscribe to a streaming platform.

The hype surrounding the Video-on-Demand (VOD) sector is gradually growing in Africa as local and international platforms obtain actual subscribers. Here are some of the leading streaming platforms in Africa. Some are established international companies while others are startups.

Netanyahu to visit Chad for resumption of diplomatic ties

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Chad on Jan. 20, where he is expected to announce the resumption of diplomatic ties with the African country, his office said Thursday.

Netanyahu will depart for a "historic visit" to Chad on Sunday and will meet Chadian President Idriss Deby, the prime minister's office said in a statement.

The visit follows a trip by Deby, who was in Jerusalem for a two-day official visit, last November.

The two leaders held meetings in which they discussed the fight against terrorism and bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture, solar energy and water.

Netanyahu had said he would fly to Chad, where he and Deby "will announce the resumption of diplomatic relations.''

Chad, a Muslim-majority country in Central Africa, and Israel severed their diplomatic relations in 1972.

Most Muslim or Arab countries do not have formal ties with Israel.

Netanyahu praised the warming ties with Chad as an example of how Israel can form relations in Africa and the Middle East regardless of the continuing conflict with the Palestinians.

Ali Baba on political matters

If you follow Ali Baba on Instagram then you should be rest assured of reading something interesting every time just like his recent post where he gave reasons why the present election season in the country is quiet.

According to the veteran comedian who took to his Instagram page on Thursday, January 17, 2019, the reason behind the quiet election season presently is the fact that all the avenues where politicians get illegal funds from, have been blocked.

"Have you ever heard of any election in Nigeria that is so quiet? Naaa. You know why? There is no money. All the places all the politicians use to take money from is with TSA. Other places where monies are in, can't be accessed because of BVN. Elections is one month away and adverts on radio and tv have reduced. Only posters and billboards. We shall overcome, one day," he wrote.

Just in case you don't know, Ali Baba is one of the very few Nigerian celebrities that are politically conscious. We are talking about the likes of Yul Edochie, I Go Dye, Daddy Showkey, to mention a few.

Hilda Dokubo - A breach of movie classification rule means problem

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST

Hilda Dokubo

Hilda Dokubo recently said a breach of movie classification rule means a big problem for the film industry and nation at large.

The veteran actress, who remains popular for her role in the 2015 hit, 'Stigma,' made this known at NFVCB's training and celebration of Women in the Business of Film Production Week.

"If there is a breach of classification rule, there is a problem. The problem is however not for the filmmaker but for the person that allowed the breach because classification plays the role of informing, plays the role of healing and places responsibility on everyone, including the producer and adults," Dokubo began.

Speaking further, the actress said, "Because we produce for home, and in building the content, we put the family in mind. So, Nollywood should be seen from the angle of content and not necessarily because it started on VHS format.

"We cannot create standards if we do not classify our movies. We should also classify TV contents because some of the things on TV don't make sense, and censoring them when they are on air will only raise the sensitive glands of young people."

Dokubo is a Nigerian film actress and youth advocate who once served as special adviser on youth affairs to Peter Odili, a former governor of Rivers State.
