5 habits you need to break now if you want to increase productivity

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:30 PM PST

For most people, becoming as productive as they would like to be or need to be is a goal that is constantly changing. Although you may have your rituals and routines that you believe are supporting that goal, every now and then it is important to revisit the things that you focus on the most.

5 habits you need to break now if you want to increase productivity
Productivity is defined by your energy, time, and focus. You want to achieve a mental and physical energy that is sustainable and helps push you towards your goals so here are 5 habits you need to break now if you want to increase productivity.

1. Multitasking
We all think that we can manage it all, all at the same time but the sad truth is that it is impossible to multitask and be completely productive. Multi-tasking may seem like juggling it all but it impacts our minds and bodies quite heavily.

You are guaranteed to burn out at some point and when you eventually do, its important to re-evaluate what productivity means to you and what behaviour you need to enforce in order to achieve that safely.

2. Not setting boundaries
We often abandon boundaries in an effort to please others. From coworkers always stopping by your office to your supervisor asking you to review files right before you are leaving for the day, these interruptions are a result of not setting boundaries.

Allowing this gives other the power to deplete your time and cuts into what you need to do for yourself. One handy way of setting boundaries is by using your calendar and scheduling your time in a concrete way.

In that calendar, make sure you include free time to attend to any ad-hoc tasks.

3. Lack of communication
Closed mouths certainly do not get fed and in the same way, if you don't voice out what you want, you're never going to get it. It is very common to not communicate your needs in fear of being a burden to others.

Whether you work for a company or work for yourself, you have to be intentional with your communication. When you're communicating with your employees or colleagues, t is important to be clear and direct with instructions and expectations to avoid any misunderstandings.

4. Fear of failure
Do you have a big career dream, but fear that you may fail in reaching it? The fear of failure can be so powerful that it results in you settling for second-best.

We all want to make a success of our lives. When we don't succeed at something, we often feel demoralised and reluctant to dust ourselves off and try again. You may also be facing a number of obstacles that seem almost impossible to overcome.

Being afraid to fail can cause you to miss chances to develop your special talents and to feel truly fulfilled. By stepping out of your comfort zone and setting your doubts aside, you're able to truly grow as a person.

Try not to focus too much on the little details and tackle your task as best you can and move on.

5. Get passionate
Do what you love and love what you do. Feeling inspired and satisfied is so important to productivity. Try prioritising tasks that you enjoy to increase effectiveness.

Want to start saving money? You need to ask yourself these questions

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

xEveryone likes the idea of saving money not only because it's a good financial practice but also because it helps them to meet their financial goals.

Want to start saving money?
You know savings is nothing if it doesn't have a purpose. You don't want to save money just because it is a good idea. You need to tie your savings to something you really wish to achieve within a period of time.

So, if you're saving now, or you just realize the importance of savings, you need to ask some questions to help you make the most of the savings.

1.   How much can I afford to save?

If you're saving a certain amount at the end of the month, you have to make sure you're consistent with it. Try to determine how much you can save that won't affect your monthly upkeep. And if there's anything you subscribe to that may prevent you from being consistent with your savings, try to cut it off to allow you save well.

2.   Should I set savings goals?

There's no point saving money if it's not tied to a goal. Why would you save money if you don't what to do with it? Once you start saving, the first thing is to name your goal and how soon you wish to reach the goal. This is a balance between how much you can save and how long you wish to save for.

3.   Should I be saving when I have debt to pay off?

Savings might be very important to your personal finance, but it makes more sense to pay off your debt before you start saving. Once you clear your debt, you are free to save more and faster without being haunted by creditors.

4.  Should I invest or save money?

The decision to invest or save money is largely dependent on your financial situation and goal. Investment comes with little or no risk but it grows your money faster than savings which only keeps your money safe and grows it slowly.

Cristiano Ronaldo criticized for posting private jet selfie
Christiano Ronaldo has been strongly criticized for posting a smiling photo of himself taken in a private jet while footballer Emiliano Sala is still missing after the plane he was in vanished.

As the search for Sala was called off for the night, fellow footballer Cristiano Ronaldo tweeted a photo of himself taking a selfie in a private jet. In another photo, he can be seen wearing a wide grin and giving a thumbs up in the aircraft as he left Madrid where he was given a suspended jail sentence for tax fraud

Fans, sports lovers, and pundits thought Ronaldo's photo was insensitive and they called him out for it.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker retweeted Ronaldo's photo and wrote:

Not the day for this tweet. It really isn't.

Other Twitter users told him it was wrong and disrespectful for him to share such a photo at a time like this while some asked him if he had read the news about Sala at all.

Imo APC Crisis: Hope Uzodinma Speaks On Expulsion From APC, Attacks Okorocha

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 06:03 PM PST

Senator Hope Uzodinma and Gov. Rochas Okorocha
Senator Hope Uzodinma, the Gubernatorial Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo state, has reacted to his expulsion from the Imo state chapter of the party.

Below is a statement made available to PoliticsNGR by his spokesman, Hussaini Bukar;

"The purported suspension of the APC governorship candidate is an exercise in futility and therefore void and of no effect whatsoever. There is only one APC in Imo State under the chairmanship of Prince Marcellus Nlemeigbo.

"That is the party known at the headquarters in Abuja. There's no APC faction in Imo State. So you cannot act from a void."

"Okorocha and his infantile boys brigade can deluded themselves to high havens but they cannot change the facts They are not members of APC and therefore, as far as APC is concerned, cannot act from a void because they don't belong to APC. So the so called suspension or whatever of anybody by the Okorocha gang is of no effect because it's void and none existent."

Where Is Aisha Buhari? As Anxiety Mounts Over Her Health Causes

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 05:38 PM PST

Mrs Aisha Buhari
Where is Aisha Buhari, wife of the president?

She has not been campaigning along with President Muhammadu Buhari in his re-election bid and this has raised concern as to her whereabouts.

But TheCable understands that she is currently abroad for medical reasons, although her office has refused to confirm or deny the speculation.

When TheCable contacted Suleiman Haruna, media aide to the president's wife, he said he did not have any comments.

"Honestly, honestly, I don't have any comment on that. People have been calling me. I don't have any comment on that," Haruna said.

Speaking with TheCable on Wednesday, a presidency source explained that the president's wife has not been seen campaigning for her husband "because she is ill".

"For about two weeks now, you will observe that the president's wife has not been campaigning. She is ill and she has travelled abroad for treatment," the source said.

TheCable understands that she will be back by Monday.

Earlier in the month, Buhari's wife set up a 700-member team for her husband's second term bid.

The large team, mainly made up of women, was inaugurated by the president on January 4 at Aso Rock.

At the event, she explained that her team would serve as a support to the main campaign council co-chaired by Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor and a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"It will operate as a sister body with necessary legwork and outreach and will mobilise women and youths across the country," the president's wife said.

She then led her team to a rally in Kano state on January 5.

But that was about the last time she was seen in public working for her husband's reelection bid.

On January 12, her team arrived Owerri, Imo state, to campaign but she was absent.

Aisha was represented by Dolapo, co-chairperson of the team and wife to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Although she has been critical of some Buhari's inner circle, she has openly supported her husband's quest for a second term in office.

Buhari: Amaechi Created Problem For Me In South-Eastern States

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 05:30 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, created a serious problem for him when he pledged to construct a railway linking the South-East zone to the Northern part of Nigeria.

Buhari made the disclosure during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign in Enugu, on Thursday.

He lamented that fulfilling the promise Amaechi made would be difficult.

Buhari, however, said he would try his best to convince the Federal Executive Council members to approve the project.

He said: "Amaechi has made you people a promise and I don't know how to fulfil it. But I can see how I will fulfil it by getting the Federal Executive Council members to approve it."

The president said the promise Amaechi made was not presented to the FEC, adding that it would have been proper to get approval from FEC before making it open.

Buhari also thanked the people of the zone for trooping out for his campaign, adding that they should always have faith in Nigeria as they did not have any other country.

He said: "We all must join hands to build a stronger country as we do not have any other country."

The president reminded the people that his government was determined to fix infrastructure in the country, adding that "if we get the roads done, get the rail lines done, and get other infrastructure done, we will be making progress."

Election Will Not Hold If We Are Not Included – Rivers APC Threatens INEC

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:27 PM PST

INEC and APC Rivers State
The Rivers State All Progressives Congress, has warned that the forthcoming general elections may not hold in the state if names of their candidates are not on the ballot.

The Candidates of APC contesting the various positions issued the threat during a media conference in Port Harcourt because of some judicial pronouncements restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from including the party's candidates in its list.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of other candidates, House Of Representative Candidate for Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni and Ahoada-West Federal Constituency, Henry Odili complained that INEC has not treated APC candidates fairly.

According to a Daily Post report, Odili accused the judiciary and INEC of collaborating with Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike to deny APC their right to vote and be voted for.

"The recent happenings in Rivers state and the judiciary pronouncement have clearly shown to the world the person behind the intraparty crisis in Rivers state and that's Governor Wike.

"What he hopes to achieve from it is to exclude the APC from participating in the 2019 elections in Rivers state for fear of his guaranteed loss at the elections.

"The electoral laws were drafted in such a way that the courts cannot interfere with it and it does not allow INEC to delist or remove the name of a candidate without the candidate doing it himself or by death.

"That INEC should with immediate effect include 'All the Candidates of APC' in their list for the forth-coming Election.

"That, having re-listed 'All Our Candidates', APC in Rivers State should be given the same time frame given to PDP Candidates in Rivers State to Campaign within the Lengths and Breath of Rivers State.

"That, failure to abide by 1 and 2 above, APC Rivers State will resist any attempt to hold Election in Rivers State".

2019 Presidency: Saraki’s Camp Speaks On Why Oby Ezekwesili Withdrew From Race

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:20 PM PST

Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki's, Special Adviser on International Relations, Mr. Bankole Omisore has reacted as the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, Oby Ezekwesili stepped down from the presidential race.

Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education had explained that she stepped aside from the race to help build a coalition that would defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 16, 2019 election.

Reacting, Omisore dismissed the claim, saying the former Minister stepped out of the race to "stylishly support" President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a series of tweets, Omisore wrote: "God bless @adeyanjudeji he told @obyezeks the truth in 2018. Sadly, aunty didn't receive it well, that she found it hard to speak against his arrest. May Almighty forgive us all and I pray she retraces her step.

"Aunty has been exposed for stylishly supporting the incumbent. Next on the list are all the CSO's forming we are neutral but are codedly collecting from the ruling party. We know what you did in 2015, and we are watching you."

2019 Election: Rivers APC Candidates Spit Fire Over INEC’s Exclusion, Discloses Who’s Behind Crisis

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:10 PM PST

Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi
The candidates of the National and State Assembly on the platform of the Chibuike Amaechi-led All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, have cried out over their exclusion from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC list for the February elections.

In the list released by the electoral umpire, the candidates of both factions of the APC in the state were not listed following court orders to the commission.

The candidates accused the State Governor, Nyesom Wike of plunging Rivers into crisis by consistently fighting to exclude APC from the election.

In a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the candidates, who are products of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee, NWC's approved indirect primary, called on INEC to publish their names and tender public apology.

In a statement made available to DAILY POST, the candidates said, "We the duly nominated National and State Assembly candidates of the APC have watched the strange developments taking place in Rivers State in the buildup to the 2019 general election and have decided to speak up to the relevant agencies and the public before the ambition of one man (Gov. Wike) will plunge Rivers State into another round of avoidable crisis.

"The recent happenings in Rivers State and the judicial pronouncements have clearly shown to the world the person (Gov. Wike) behind the intra-party issues within Rivers State APC and what he hoped to achieve from it, which is to exclude the APC from participating in the 2019 elections for fear of his guaranteed loss at the election because of poor performance in government.

"We are surprised that Gov. Wike who prides himself as "Mr. Projects" and the PDP that claims to be the popular party in Rivers State are afraid to go into a free and fair election/contest in Rivers State with the APC. It is on record that Gov. Wike boasted and informed his party (PDP) members who have also made it their mantra long before Justice Nworgu gave his infamous judgment that APC would not have any candidates in Rivers State to run against him and other PDP candidates. And what has transpired between him, the courts, and INEC is a manifestation of this boast and his fear/trepidation of going into election against APC candidates in Rivers State.

"We had been silent as this drama unfolded but because evil thrives when good men do or say nothing, we decided to speak up and let Nigerians know the true position of the political happenings in Rivers State particularly in view of the recent unlawful action of INEC to delist APC National Assembly candidates from the 2019 general election in spite of INEC's knowledge that the issues relating to it are before various courts of law for which final decisions were still awaited, thus confirming INEC's collaboration with Gov. Wike and the PDP.

"For the records, we would like to state the follow:

"The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognizes the establishment of political parties and guarantees the right to sponsor candidates for National Assembly, State Assembly and other elective positions in Nigeria.

"The same Constitution also provides for our right to belong to political parties.

"Following (i) above, the electoral law of Nigeria gives political parties rights to carry out the process of nominating candidates for election in accordance with their own guidelines

"Also the electoral law recognizing that the electoral process is a time-limited event arising from the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution (1999) was crafted such that the courts would not interfere with it but the courts in Rivers State have willfully violated this thereby affecting the rights of Rivers people to freely choose their leaders/representatives.

"We are aware that no section in the Electoral Act 2010 (As Amended) or the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria empowered INEC or the courts to delist any duly nominated candidate whose name had been submitted by the party and acknowledged by INEC without their voluntary withdrawal or death.

"We are also aware that there was no suit, not to talk of a subsisting court order, stopping APC from holding primaries in Rivers State. This is notwithstanding the fact that S. 87 (10) of the Electoral Act 2010, (as amended) clearly prohibits the Courts from stopping the holding of the primaries of any Political Party even pending the determination of any suit in Court.

"We the National and State Assembly candidates of APC recognizing these Constitutional provisions and the provisions of the electoral law of Nigeria have participated in the electoral process to the point of being sponsored as candidates of our party the APC and duly nominated/recognized by INEC as such.

"Thus, the recent premature action by INEC to delist our National Assembly candidates from participating in the election without waiting for the plethora of cases pending before various courts to take their course through the apex court for final decisions all in a hurried bid to satisfy Gov. Wike is an invitation to anarchy which should be avoided. What INEC has done in this regard is to destroy or tamper with the "Res" of our appeals without their being fully determined.

"We want to remind INEC and the general public that in the history of democratic government in Nigeria and the world, no one has ever risen to power with the amount of blood spilled by the Wike led government in 2015 and we would not allow a repeat of same in this 2019 general election hence a level playing field should be provided for all parties by the agencies of government concerned.

"The people of Rivers State are already fed up with the bad governance of Gov. Wike and his PDP collaborators which have brought tension to the State and we would advise INEC not to aggravate the already tense situation. We are not unaware of Gov. Wike's penchant for always threatening to kill or destroy INEC staff and Rivers people who are on his way. We on behalf of ourselves and the good people of Rivers State are ready to take our destiny in our own hands, and are ready to meet him at Philippi.

"The primary purpose of election is for the people to FREELY CHOOSE who would lead/represent them and denying duly nominated candidates of APC in Rivers State the opportunity to participate in the 2019 election under any guise is simply denying the good people of Rivers State their right to FREELY CHOOSE their leaders. An injustice that should and would not be allowed to stand.

"We the people of Rivers State had always prior to the emergence of Gov. Wike and his acolytes been a peace loving and law abiding people who would not want INEC and Gov. Wike to plunge Rivers State into another crisis as our people deserve better. Rivers people must without coercion freely choose their leaders in this 2019 election as against what obtained in 2015.

"The choice to remain in darkness or free themselves from the forces of darkness must be freely made by Rivers people. The world should remember how Gov. Wike rode to power on the blood of thousands of innocent Rivers indigenes whilst they watched and played the Ostrich.

"He has clearly shown that he is ready to go through that route again by manipulating the judiciary and INEC and threatening hell and brimstone if he is resisted. LET INEC, THE JUDICIARY, AND NIGERIANS BE TOLD THAT ANY BLOOD SPILLED AS A RESULT OF THEIR INACTION OR WILLFUL COLLUSION WITH GOV. WIKE WILL BE ON THEIR OWN HANDS/HEAD. Enough is enough.

"The law is supposed be to blind and without respect of persons, but in Rivers State it has sight and is bent on recognizing only the person of Gov.Wike and his co-travelers but we leave that to God, the righteous Judge. We decry the unwarranted interruption of our campaigns by the courts in Rivers State but have obeyed it as law abiding citizens.

"However, the electoral guidelines published by INEC specifies given periods for campaigns by political parties hence we would also warn that we shall take same time to campaign from the day the order is lifted as what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. We would not sit idly by while undue advantage is given to our opponents in this election thus causing us not to compete favourably.

"Delightfully, we are not deterred by these shenanigans as the quest to free Rivers State from the shackles of insecurity, unemployment and poverty in the midst of riches is a task that must be accomplished.

In light of the above, we demand the following:

"That INEC should with immediate effect and apology to the APC and Rivers people, relist APC candidates in Rivers State for the 2019 General Elections.

"That INEC should give the same enabling time and environment for political campaigns to the APC in Rivers State as they have given to the PDP and other parties.

"That failing the above two demands, there should be no National Assembly, State Assembly and Governorship election in Rivers State until all the cases pending before various courts have gone through their course to the apex court for final decisions, and our right to fair hearing guaranteed.

"As God-fearing people we conclude by aligning ourselves with this Biblical injunction which commands us to, "learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed" (Isaiah 1:17 KJV), hence this position."

Buhari Storms Anambra, Reels Out Achievements, Solicits For Votes

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:02 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari Visit to Anambra
President Muhammadu Buhari, Thursday, in Onitsha begged the people of Anambra State to vote for APC, saying that his government meant well for them.

Buhari who spoke at a presidential campaign rally held at the Holy Trinity field in Onitsha said his government was working hard on the economy, security and the fight against corruption.

The president who first moved to the newly completed Zik's Mausoleum, where he commissioned the project, was also at the palace of the traditional ruler of Onitsha Kingdom, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, where he met traditional rulers in the state, Daily Post reports.

Addressing a mammoth crowd which gathered at the venue, Buhari said, "I am happy to have commissioned the Zik's Mausoleum, I am just coming from there now. The road from Enugu to here(Onitsha), which was last done during the Abacha time is being done again.

"We are also working on the Port Harcourt road to this place too, and I believe the minister of Transport (Rotimi Amaechi) has also told you of the railway project, which will also pass from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, through some of your states."

The president, however, refused to make new promises of what his government would do for the people of the south-east if he returns as president of the county for a second term.

The president while speaking in the area of economy lamented that there were too many unemployed able-bodied people in the country.

In the area of security, Buhari assured that his government was doing his best, while also stating that no local government in the North East was being held by members of the Boko Haram sect.

On militancy in the Niger Delta, he said, "In the Niger Delta, we have reached an agreement with the militants, and production is going on. It is unfortunate that production has come down from over two million barrels per day to about half a million."

Earlier, the minister of Labour and employment, Dr Chris Ngige listed some of President Buhari's achievements in Anambra State to include 15,000 beneficiaries of the NPower scheme and feeding of Anambra State children in primary school through the school feeding programme.

He said, "On the basis of track records, I believe that people of good conscience will vote for APC and for Buhari. Anambra will not only vote for Buhari but for the three senatorial candidates. Last time, they allocated 19,000 votes to Buhari, but this time around, but this time around, Mr President, You will see what will happen.

Also addressing the crowd, Coordinator of President Muhammadu-Buhari Campaign Council in Anambra, Senator Andy Uba thanked the people for turning out massively to welcome the president.

2019 Election: Ayade Shuts Down Obanliku, As Thousands Troop To Campaign Ground

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:55 AM PST

Governor Ben Ayade
An unprecedented crowd yesterday overflowed the Sankwala Cenotaph venue of Governor Ben Ayade campaign rally in Obanliku Local Government Area of the State.

The overwhelming crowd made up of artisans, Okada riders and market women lined up all roads leading to the venue to cheer Ayade as his campaign train made its way.

The enthusiastic supporters danced and sang the Governor's praises as they pledged to cast their votes for him and the PDP candidates in the coming elections, Daily Post reports.

When Prof Ayade mounted the rostrum to speak, a deafening chant of "Ayade is a goal" rented the air, with the jubilant crowd surging forward to physically touch the governor and pledge their support for his reelection.

It took spirited efforts of security agents to keep the ecstatic crowd at bay.

Speaking later, the evidently elated governor told the people of the council that Obanliku was strategic to the state as the council housing the famous Obudu ranch resort.

He promised speedy completion of the 147 mfom-okuku-obudu ranch road project linking the five local government areas of Cross River North senatorial zone.

Muktar Ramalan Yero
A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna State on Thursday failed to continue with the trial of former state Governor, Muktar Ramalan Yero, and three others due to the absence of former PDP state Chairman, Abubakar Haruna Gaya.

The suspects were arraigned on eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, bribery, money laundering and criminal diversion of funds to the tune of N700 million.

Yero, it would be recalled was re-arraigned before Justice Z. B. Abubakar on November 27, 2018 along with Nuhu Somo Waya, a former Minister of State; Abubakar Haruna Gaya, a former PDP Chairman, Kaduna State Chapter, and Hamza Ishaq, a former Secretary to the state government.

Stop Dragging Military Into Politics, Yobe PDP Tell Gov. Gaidam

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:41 AM PST

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam
Alhaji Adamu Mohammad Rama, the Deputy Chairman of Yobe State Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) ,  has called on Governor Ibrahim Gaidam to stop dragging the military into the murky waters of politics.

The Deputy Chairman made the call in a statement while reacting to a report in which the governor accused the military of helping to rig the 2015 elections in some parts of the state.

According to him, the governor's claim was not only untrue but unfortunate, Daily Post reports.

He asked: "If his claims were true, why didn't his party go to court to challenge the results? Why is Gaidam making these claims now?"

According to Alhaji Rama, Geidam is merely making empty threats that will not change the choice of the electorates for the 2019 general elections.

How I Appointed My Security Chiefs – Buhari

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:26 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday disclosed how he appointed heads of security agencies in his government

The president, while addressing the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, as well as otber traditional and religious rulers at the palace of the monarch in Anambra State, said appointment of security chiefs was purely based on competence and merit.

The president made the comments in response to allegations raised by the traditional rulers about the marginalisation of the South East states, particularly in the military.

Buhari noted that he had been fair to all the regions of the country since his assumption of office on May 29, 2015, Daily Post reports.

"I am pleased that you have the courage to present issues about your constituency but I expect you to be more patriotic in your presentation.

"In the south east, there are five states, in the north, there are 19 states. In the south east, out of the five states, I think five members of the Federal Executive Council are from this region, Trade and Investment, Foreign Affairs, Labour, Science and Technology, and seven of the northern states have only ministers of state.

"I appointed most people into the country's security architecture without knowing them personally, except based on their professional records.

"I think I tried to be fair. And you can ask these ministers. I never asked them how are they running their parastatals, the boards. I appointed them and I trust them. I allow them work.

"I don't have to tell you what noise the other states are making especially when compared to the votes I got in 2015. So, I think I try to be fair.

"Those of you who were in the military even in the Biafran Army, know that the entry point is the same and you go for basic training, until you go to your formations or institutions whether it is Army, Navy, AirForce or the police.

"The most competent or senior person is the one that gets there.

"If there are half a million soldiers, only one man can be the chief of Army staff at a time. This is so for the rest of the troop. In recruitment, we make sure that by states, people are recruited. At least, this is what I do, people are recruited from each state. For those who manage to get recruited, it's up to them to get to the top if they are professional and work for it.

"The present chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff even the previous Inspector General of Police that just left, I didn't know them personally before I appointed them. I follow records. The current acting Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu, was appointed based on merit.

"The same thing with the IG, that one was appointed last week. I don't think I have ever seen him, I follow records. So, appointments in the Armed Forces and other law enforcement agencies depends on individual performance after recruitment not where you think you come. At least between me and God, this is what I do," he said.

Justice Onnoghen: Court Of Appeal Takes Final Decision On CJN’s Trial

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:19 AM PST

Justice Walter Onnoghen, CJN
The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday, barred the Danladi Umar-led Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, from trying the Chief Justice of Nigeria, NJC, Walter Onnoghen.

A three-man panel of the court led by Justice Abdul Aboki, granted the interim order pending the ruling on Onnoghen's application for stay of proceedings.

The appellate court ordered the CCT to temporarily hands-off the matter till January 30, a date it fixed to deliver ruling on an appeal the embattled CJN lodged before it.

The appellate court stopped the CCT from proceeding with hearing in the false assets declaration.

The court gave the order after it listened to counsel to the CJN and that of the FG, regarding what transpired at the tribunal last Tuesday.

Counsel to the CJN, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, who led 18 other Senior Advocates of Nigeria, traced the history of the case for the appellate court panel.

He told the court that the Federal Government had on January 11, through the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, commenced what it termed as investigation of information contained in the assets declaration forms that were submitted by the CJN.

He said, "My lords, on that same day, the charge was filed before the CCT. By the next Monday being January 14, the tribunal issued a summon for the Appellant to appear. On that same day, the Appellant filed an appeal to challenge jurisdiction of the Tribunal.

"Likewise, the Respondent, on the same day, filed a motion asking the Applicant to step aside from office pending the determination of the substantive trial and for President Muhammadu Buhari to be compelled by the tribunal to swear in the most senior jurist of the Supreme Court as the acting CJN."

Onnoghen's lawyer further explained that in view of the development, the CCT, on the first day the case came up before it, ruled that it would take both the applications by the CJN and that of FG together.

He said that Onnoghen, who was dissatisfied with the decision of the Danladi Umar-led CCT, promptly filed a motion before the appellate court on January 18, as well as adduced eight exhibits to show why his motion and that of the prosecution should not be heard the same time.

"In the said motion, the CJN prayed the appellate court to stay further proceedings in respect of charge No.CCT/ABJ/01/2019, pending against him before the CCT. He urged the court to suspend further action on his trial, pending the determination of his appeal," Olanipekun, explained.

Olanipekun explained in the court that regardless of four separate court injunctions restricting further action on the matter pending determination of legal issues surrounding both the competence of the charge and jurisdiction of the tribunal to entertain same, Umar, in a ruling last Tuesday, insisted on proceeding with the trial.

He said that the court that aside Umar's position that the CCT was not bound by orders from both the high court and the National Industrial Court, he equally refused to temporarily hands-off the matter to await the outcome of the CJN's appeal.

Olanipekun alleged that over 48 hours after the tribunal gave its ruling, it had yet to furnish the Applicant with a copy despite a letter that was written on behalf of the CJN.

He said the CJN's motion to temporarily halt further proceedings at the CCT was to avoid the foisting of a state of fait-accompli (helplessness) on the Appeal Court and thereby render his appeal nurgatory.

He further called the court's attention to the fact that both the CCT and its Chairman are parties in all the pending cases.

"We are urging my lords to protect the 'Res' of this matter which is not only about the office and position of the CJN, but about the judiciary and the constitution. The Res in this matter is serious and very unique.

"There is a threat to the institution of the judiciary and the ruling of the tribunal further compounded the already existing conondurum.

"The sanity and sanctity of the legal profession and the judicial process is at stake. We want to plead your Lordships to accede to our request and order stay of proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and also order accelerated hearing of the appeal.

"I dare submit that there cannot be two kings in the palace. The court of appeal has been seized of the matter and yet that tribunal want to proceed on Monday.

"The urgency of this situation deserves an intervention of your lordships", he pleaded.

On his part, the counsel to the Federal Government FG's lawyer, Oyin Koleosho, urged the appellate court to dismiss the CJN's application. He argued that it was within the discretion of the tribunal and not the FG to decide whether or not the trial should be temporarily suspended.

"It is not within the powers of the Respondent to on its own, stay proceedings. It is the exercise of discretionary powers of the tribunal.

"Exhibit A to A4 attached to the Applicant's further affidavit clearly indicated that the tribunal adjourned to hear the application challenging its jurisdiction.

"This exhibit equally shows that the adjournment at the tribunal was at the instance of this Applicant who sought for time to file his response.

"There is nothing before this court to show that the application challenging jurisdiction of the tribunal and the one asking him to step aside were adjourned together.

"The exhibit will show that the tribunal adjourned to hear the motion challenging its jurisdiction. Just IN: Gabon kills 2 leaders of aborted coup

"If an order of stay of proceeding is granted, how then can the tribunal take that motion challenging its jurisdiction?

"It is our position that even if this appeal succeeds, it cannot terminate the charge against the Applicant or the proceeding before the lower tribunal.

"The success of the instant appeal will be of no utilitarian value to the Applicant. Therefore this appeal should not be the basis for granting a stay of proceeding. "In conclusion, we urge your Lordships to dismiss this application."

After it had listened to both sides, the appellate court panel adjourned for ruling, even as it ordered stay of proceedings at the CCT.

"Ruling on this appeal is hereby adjourned till January 30, meanwhile the tribunal should suspend the proceeding before it pending the ruling", Justice Aboki held.

Appeal Court Sacks Jerry Gana As SDP Presidential Candidate, Restores Duke

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:09 AM PST

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a unanimous decision by a three-man panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki, the court set aside the December 14, 2018 judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which had declared Jerry Gana as the candidate of the party.

The three-man panel held that the application is illegal and unconstitutional, which ought not to have been entertained by the lower court.

The court held that Professor Jerry Gana's position as the party's candidate in section 18 of the party's amended constitution contravenes the electoral acts' stipulation for the validity of a candidate in any election, Daily Post reports.

The court also held that the amendment relied upon by professor Gana did not take effect until the 8th of October, two days after its ratification and the election of Mr Duke as the party's candidate in line with section 222 of the Electoral Act.

2019 Presidency: Festus Keyamo Speaks On Oby Ezekwesili’s ACPN Support for Buhari

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 10:50 AM PST

Festus Keyamo, SAN
The spokesperson of President Muhammadu Buhari campaign organization, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has urged the former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili to team up with Buhari.

Keyamo made the call while reacting to the decision of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, to reject Ezekwesili and support Buhari's re-election bid.

According to a Daily Post report, Ezekwesili stepped aside from the presidential race to help build a coalition that would defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 16, 2019 election.

She explained that her decision to withdraw from the race followed extensive discussions with Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora and an examination of the country's electoral environment sequel to the 2019 presidential debate of Saturday, January 19, 2019.

But reacting to her decision, ACPN lambasted Ezekwesili for allegedly using its platform to negotiate a ministerial position in the next political dispensation.

However, Keyamo commended ACPN for opting to support Buhari's re-election bid.

In a tweet, Keyamo wrote: "Thanks, ACPN, for seeing the light we saw long ago. We beseech the respected Oby Ezekwesili to join hands now with PMB. The coalition we need in Nigeria is a coalition against corruption, not a coalition against any political party. PMB is already leading the pack against corruption."
