See Reasons President Buhari Should Not Sign African Free Trade Agreement – MAN

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:05 PM PST

President  Muhammadu Bihari
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), on Wednesday, reiterated its appeal to the Federal Government not to sign the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to save Nigeria from being a dumping ground for foreign goods.

The President, Mr. Mansur Ahmed, restated the position of the association at the 2019 Edition of the MAN Annual Media Luncheon for Commerce and Industry Correspondents in Lagos.

Ahmed urged the government to withhold its assent to the agreement pending the completion of the ongoing assessment to determine its likely impact on the manufacturing sector and the economy at large.

AfCFTA is a free trade area being outlined in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement by 49 out of the 55 nations in African.

If the agreement is ratified, the free-trade area will be the largest in the world in terms of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organisation.

The agreement was brokered by the African Union (AU) and was signed on March 21, 2018 by 44 of its 55 member states in Kigali, Rwanda.

Nigeria is yet to sign the agreement.

Ahmed said: "The position of the association is that government should not sign the framework agreement until wide reaching sensitisation and proper assessment are conducted on its impact on the economy and the manufacturing sector.

"Our advocacy on AfCFTA is yielding desired results and as you are aware, Nigeria is yet to sign the framework agreement.

"MAN is a functional member of this committee that is billed to submit its report to the President in early February.

"In addition, MAN, being a proactive organisation that strongly believes in evidence-based advocacy commissioned a sector-specific study on AfCFTA.

"We have shared the study, full report and fact sheets on the highlights of findings with the Presidential Committee on AfCFTA.

"We are confident that the eventual position of Nigeria on the AfCFTA Framework Agreement would be well articulated in a fresh National Negotiation Mandate that is in the best interest of the manufacturing sector and indeed the Nigerian economy.

"The position would pay utmost attention to emerging issues on AfCFTA and ensure that the industrial aspiration of the country is not compromised on the platter of free trade."

This investment will enable the company to strengthen this advantage as it develops brand partnerships that support its artists' values and stories.

"With the resources and operational capacity Kupanda Capital brings along with its investment, Mavin is now ready to grow our artist roster and facilitate partnerships at a global scale. I Can Vouch For Atiku Anywhere - Obasanjo

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:19 PM PST

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's former President, on Wednesday said he could vouch for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reposition the country.

According to a report by PoliticsNgr, Obasanjo made the statement in Lagos while speaking at the 2019 Island Club Quarterly Business Lecture. Abubakar had earlier delivered his lecture themed: "My vision to get Nigeria Working again".

Obasanjo, in his remark said he believed that Atiku had the experience, the capacity and passion to move the country forward.

The former President, said Nigerians should no longer find his support for the former vice president strange going by what he said or wrote about him in the past.

He reiterated that he stood firmly by whatever he said in the past about Atiku and indeed President Buhari.

He, however, said the PDP candidate had demonstrated what was expected of a committed and sincere leader by owing up to his past mistakes and showing remorse.

Obasanjo added that Atiku had not only apologised to his political party and the nation, but also apologised to him for the past disagreements he made as his deputy.

He said that Atiku was not infallible like every other human being and that he, (Obasanjo) would be playing God by not forgiving the former Vice-President.

"I have been called names because of my position on Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri Adamawa.

"Everything I have said as far as I have knowledge of Atiku, I have not retracted and I stand firmly by them because they are to the best of my knowledge true.

"And neither has what I have said and written about Buhari been controverted, if anything, they have been confirmed and proved beyond any shadow of doubt.

"But Atiku has done things which are absolutely imperative for a leader to be followed and believed.

"First, know who you are and present yourself as you are – a human being in blood and flesh and susceptible to human mistakes and human frailties.

"Don't cover up with sanctimonious veneer of bogus integrity, incorruptibility, uprightness, goodness and false figures and statistics, all of which are contrived to deceive, to cheat, to plunder and to destroy.

"Atiku never claimed to be a saint and I never described him as such. I will never so describe any human being alive let alone calling him a Messiah.

"On an occasion in the past when I said that someone was not a Messiah, some Nigerians out of bad "belle'' were up in arms.

"For me, as a Christian, the only Messiah I know and have is Jesus Christ and even then, the man aspect of Him was imperfect while the divine aspect of Him was perfectly messianic.

"Secondly, a leader must be honest to himself and to the people he serves or he wants to serve.

"He must identify and acknowledge his situation, mistakes, shortcomings and inadequacy; show remorse where and when he has erred, seek forgiveness and repent; and not passing the bulk or keep blaming others and fail to accept responsibility.

"Atiku accepts responsibility for his mistakes, shows remorse and seeks forgiveness from his political party and subsequently from Nigerians.

"He asks for forgiveness from me and as a believer, a Christian as such, I forgave him in accordance with the teaching and instruction of my Saviour.

"For, if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you.

"But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins (Matt 6:14-15 NIV).

"If anybody blames me for forgiving Atiku, I leave such a person with God Almighty, especially as both Christian and Islamic clerics joined Atiku to visit me to seek forgiveness.

"Anybody who does not forgive when forgiveness is sought with contrite heart cannot be a true believer and should not expect the forgiveness of God," he said.

He said past disagreements notwithstanding, Atiku demonstrated great leadership qualities when he was in office as Vice-President.

Obasanjo said he believed with the experience and courage of Abubakar, he remained the best candidate to move the country forward.

"I must reiterate that Atiku is not a saint. Who is? But from what I know of Atiku, he will be a performer in all respect. I can say that again from my personal experience.

"He knows the problems and he handled some of them in the past.

"We now know that both Buhari and Atiku have issues and all of us as human beings have one issue or the other in different magnitudes.

"But judging both of them empirically and for the task at hand, Atiku will perform much better than Buhari.

"And he will seek for good and able people around the country and beyond and make use of them to achieve his mission and vision for the general good of Nigerians and the country," he said.

Obasanjo claimed that the state of affairs under All Progressives Congress (APC) had been disappointing and called on the citizens to effect a change with their votes.

He also commended Island Club for providing the platform for leaders to articulate their visions for the country through the lecture.

Chief Obasanjo said the series of the Club's lecture had helped enriched discourse on nation-building.

Ambode Impeachment: Lawmakers In Lagos Assembly Go Into Emergency Meeting After Massive Pro-Ambode Protest

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:20 PM PST

Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos

Lagos lawmakers have gone into an emergency meeting possibly due to massive protest on Wednesday by concerned Lagosians against alleged plans to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode

Though agenda of the meeting was not known, sources close to the Assembly said it may not be unconnected with the issue of Ambode's impeachment over which hundreds of his admirers registered their protest at the Assembly earlier.

Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos

The Assembly had adjourned sitting till next Monday but suddenly summoned members for an emergency meeting on Wednesday after the protest, The Nation newspaper reports.

Usually, pressmen are not allowed into parliamentary meetings solely for the lawmakers.

However, anxious House correspondents hung around the Assembly's premises for outcome of the meeting, which was still as at 7pm.
Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos
Feelers had it that the meeting was called to deliberate on the issue of Ambode, whom the House had ordered to appear before them on Monday to defend the infractions levelled against him or faced impeachment.

The Assembly had accused Ambode of alleged gross misconduct and spending money from the 2019 budget that had not yet been laid or approved by the House.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa had told members who wished Ambode should be impeached to start collecting signatures in readiness to impeach the governor.
Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos
But hundreds of supporters loyal to Ambode stormed the Assembly to protest the planned impeachment on Wednesday's morning.

The protesters, in their number marched to the Assembly and caused traffic gridlock.

The protesters carried placards, saying that any move to impeach Ambode would disrupt the coming election, adding that the governor should be allowed to complete his tenure.

The protesters said the governor did not deserve the treatment he was getting from the party, saying they should leave the governor alone.
Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos
The House of Assembly had moved to impeach Ambode over what they called gross misconduct and spending part of the 2019 budget that had not been presented to the Assembly for approval.

They gave the governor one week to appear before the House to explain the infractions levelled against him.

The protesters, under the aegis of the Lagos People's Assembly (LPA), said as a critical civil society stakeholder in the Lagos Project, they were gravely concerned with the unfolding political drama in the state which might degenerate to a logjam if not handled with the best of statesmanship kits.
Pro-Ambode Protesters in Lagos
"We are fully conscious of the historical truism that under a constitutional democracy, the executive and legislative arms of government must seamlessly work in harmony to deliver the dividends of democracy for the people.

''Both arms are equal partners in the business of constitutional, democratic governance.''

JUST IN: I Will Consider Amnesty For Corrupt Persons Willing To Surrender Loot

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:45 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the opposition presidential candidate, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday said he would consider granting amnesty to corrupt persons willing to surrender their loot.

Mr Abubakar said this while appearing with his running mate, Peter Obi, at a live town hall programme hosted by ace journalist, Kadaria Ahmed.

The PDP Presidential candidate, said he would consider drawing a line during which corrupt former public officials would be allowed to return their loot without prosecution. After then, strong policies would be put in place to prevent and fight corruption.

Mr Abubakar said it would be more prudent to allow looters return their assets to Nigeria tax free and invest them in order to boost the country's economy.

Host Kadaria Ahmed suggested that Mr Abubakar's proposal could be morally problematic, especially since he has faced corruption allegations since leaving office as Nigeria's vice president in 2007.

"If you are to go and be prosecuting these people, you will still be prosecuting them and would not get the money," Mr Abubakar said. He suggested that a similar scheme under past administration yielded over $4 billion.

"Whether it is moral rectitude that you want to achieve or you want to see a fast development of your country," Mr Abubakar asked rhetorically.

The position was backed by Mr Abubakar's running mate, Mr Obi, who said it is better than to allow looters keep their plunder just by joining another political party.

Mr Obi's statement appears a jibe at President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been repeatedly accused of tolerating corruption amongst his political associates while going after opposition members.

Mr Obi said the Buhari administration has fought elusive corrupt people at the detriment of the Nigerian economy, which he said has been haemorrhaging jobs since the government was inaugurated in 2015.

Mr Buhari has denied going after opposition members.

On Wednesday evening, reports emerged that Babachir Lawal. a long time associate of Mr Buhari's who was fired in 2017 for alleged stealing of funds meant for the internally displaced victims of Boko Haram, had been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Mr Lawal's delayed prosecution despite overwhelming evidence had been a spectre on Mr Buhari's anti-corruption drive for several months.

Jussie Smollett, Hollywood Star, Hospitalized Following Brutal Attack By Homophobic

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:50 PM PST

Jussie Smollett
'Empire' star, Jussie Smollett has been violently attacked in an apparent homophobic and racist hate crime that left him hospitalized.

One of Jussie's close friend said the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a Subway with plans to get food.

It was on his way that he was attacked by two whites who had allegedly called Jussie a faggot before they pounced on him.

He fought back, but they allegedly beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left, they yelled, 'This is MAGA country.'

Jussie was taken to Northwestern Memorial where he was treated. He was discharged later Tuesday morning.

Authorities in Chicago said they are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, and they are searching the area for any video as more evidence.

It can be recalled that this isn't the first time Jussie is being targeted by homophobes.

Few days ago, a letter was sent to Fox Studios in Chicago with cut out letters spelling, "You will die black fag." The letter was said to be meant for Jussie.

The envelope that was used to deliver the letter was inscribed 'MAGA' in the upper left corner.

Ohaneze Ndigbo, Abia monarchs back Buhari

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:27 AM PST

Muhammadu Buhari and  Abia State Monarch
President Muhammadu Buhari who kicked off a two-State campaign tour of Abia and Imo on
Tuesday got two critical endorsements for his second term bid, on a day he was also adopted by the Pan Yoruba group, Afenifere.

The first endorsement of the president's candidature was from the Chairman of Aba Traditional Council, Dr Isaac Ikonne, Enyi 1 of Aba.

The traditional ruler called on all indigenes of Abia to vote for the All Progressives Party (APC) Presidential Candidate.

Ikonne said Igbo people would remain loyal and committed to President Buhari for the payment of pensions to ex-Biafran security personnel.

He lauded the administration's policy on ease of doing business which, the traditional ruler said, had benefited the Igbo more than any other ethnic group.

The traditional ruler also expressed delight over the massive infrastructure development going on throughout the South-East.

"You love Nigeria and you need to return to consolidate your fight against the monster of corruption and to take us to the Next Level.

"I want to assure you that Aba and Abians and indeed all Igbos will massively vote for you," the royal father told the President as he raised his hand and proclaimed him the winner of the coming presidential poll.

The second endorsement was by the secretary-general of the apex-Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu, who had earlier expressed a dissenting view from that of his chairman in expressing support for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the imminent elections.

Okwukwu announced the adoption of President Buhari as the true Ohaneze candidate who would be formally recognised as such at a coming event at the Aso Rock Villa.

On his part, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State welcomed the existing "synergy" between the federal government and his state which he said, had come with enormous gains that were cherished by the government and the people.

President Buhari pledged to provide more infrastructure to the South-East geopolitical zone of the federation to give a further impetus to the spirit of industry, hard work and competitiveness for which the Igbo are known.

"They deserve more and more infrastructure to further excel," the President said.

UN solicits $50m to tackle new displacements in Nigeria

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:08 AM PST

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says it urgently requires 50 million dollars from the 840 million dollars humanitarian response appeal to tackle new cases of displacement.

Edem Worsonu, Head of Office, OCHA, Nigeria, made this known in Abuja during a joint media briefing organised by the UN OCHA and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Worsonu said that as a matter of urgency, OCHA would launch a 90 days plan, which was aimed at addressing the needs of new displacements to avoid them falling into secondary displacements

" We are about to launch a ninety-day plan within this plan, seeking for 50 million dollars right now within the 840 million to assist new arrivals who have moved recently from insecurity.

"We need assistance right now and the general support of our donors has been recognised and we continue to call them for support.

"We also call on the Nigerian private sector and the government, so that we can join hands and deliver the assistance to the people.

"But we call for urgent funding for people in need right now,'' worsonu said.

She said that OCHA was also prioritising basic life-saving needs, dignity kits, Non-food items and emergency education for response to the most vulnerable groups.

She said that 80 per cent of the affected populations were women and children, hence, the need to address their the situation with urgency.

The head of the office, OCHA, said that emergency education was also a priority for children who were out of school.

Worsonu called for the collaborative efforts of governments at the national and local levels, private sector and humanitarian actors to ensure the implementation of the relevant strategies to address the dire humanitarian challenges.

Earlier, Edward Kallon, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator to Nigeria, emphasised the collaboration and coordination of all humanitarian actors in order to succeed in their interventions.

Kallon said that the UN could not succeed in delivering humanitarian aid without the Non-Governmental Organisations, international and national partners.

"Let me put this in record, NGOs, whether international or national are our partners in choice, we cannot work without them.

"Government has a role to screen national partners and we have been requesting support from the government of Borno in this regard.

"We still call them to work with us to screen partners, especially national NGOs, who will then work with both international NGOs and the UN to deliver assistance.

"We have taken a lot of initiatives to start building capacities of civil societies.

" NGOs are very critical, we are talking about 3,000 international and national partners working with us in the North East, we cannot do anything without these NGOs.

Kallon said that OCHA had allocated 1.9 million dollars from the Nigerian Humanitarian Response Fund (NHF) to build capacities of civil societies and that the programme was ongoing.

He said that unfortunately, there were no government counterparts in some Local Government Areas, especially in Borno state.

He explained that the UN relied on local partners in order to effectively provide assistance.

He said that the UN was looking forward to the positive impact of the HRS and Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) in addressing humanitarian and protective needs of affected persons.

Liz Ahua, UNHCR's Regional Representative for West Africa, said that close to 320,000 persons had been displaced anew in the last three months.

She said that the Regional Refugee Response Plan also provided a comprehensive approach on how to address the situation.

Ahua corroborated the need for all hands to be on deck, to tackle the crisis which was not just a Nigerian crisis but a Lake Chad Basin crisis.

2019 Election: Two Mistakes APC Leaders Must Not Make – Gov Shettima

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:05 PM PST

Gov. Kashim Shettima
The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday listed two mistakes he said leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Borno State must not make ahead of the 2019 general election.

The Governor spoke at the Government House, Maiduguri, during the inauguration of the APC campaign council and different committees tasked with various activities.

He said: "There are two mistakes we should never make. The first mistake will be to underestimate our opponents in any party. There are those who assume that I, Kashim Shettima underrates opponents. They say so because they don't know me well enough.

"I do not underrate opponents. What I do is to foresee opponents and neutralize them long before the contest. There were those who thought I was being naive by the way we have been handling things but as Allah would ordain it, the more they underestimate us, the more we succeed, and we succeed without being arrogant.

"We recognize that no one succeeds alone. So, I do not underrate opponents. In fact, I overestimate them and that is why I start working well ahead.

"Ladies and gentlemen, even with the immense popularity of President Buhari, I want us to campaign vigorously and mobilize votes for him. I also want us to know, that helping Buhari will not be limited to getting him serious votes. It will also entail mobilizing and working legally to deny his opponents votes in the state.

"The second mistake we should never make is for anyone to nurse the intention of working against an APC candidate in anyway. As stake-holders you should bear in mind that, your political reputation will lie with your collaborative effort to win all elections within your area.

"For instance, loosing MMC, Chibok, Hawul, Askira Uba, Biu or anywhere to PDP will only make stake-holders from these local government areas to loose the legitimacy of bargaining for any political privileges within the APC in Borno State.

"More over, you should always bear in minds that electorates are not robots that you tell to vote APC in one ballot paper and vote PDP in another ballot paper. From history, anti party activities are never hidden and they have unpredictable outcomes.

"And I think one question we should wonder is what if we work against any of our candidates and yet he or she wins? When you work against someone as he or she wins an election, it automatically means that you are not relevant. I think it is wiser to help someone you disagree with to win the election so that at least, you have something to boast before such person.

"I have sounded these notes of caution not based on any particular realities but based on hypothetical possibilities that are inherent in Borno's democratic experiences. I urge all of us to bury whatever grievances we have and work together. There are some candidates who were angered in 2015 after losing out.

"Today, they are flag bearers of our party. I urge us to work for each other. We should always remember that the APC is a vehicle on a journey with all of us on board. When a vehicle is moving with you, it will be suicidal to remove any part of that vehicle otherwise everyone will crash. Perhaps the person who removes the part of the moving vehicle, could be the first casualty. Allah Ya kiyaye!" The Governor said.

‎However, the Governor used the opportunity to send condolence messages to families over the collapse of an pavilion at Ramat Square, during the APC Presidential and governorship campaign rally attended by President Muhammadu Buhari in Maiduguri, last week Monday.

4 pregnant women among Nigerian returnees from Libya

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:01 AM PST

Libya Returnee
A fresh batch of 162 Nigerians, including four pregnant women, have voluntarily returned from Libya with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The Coordinator, Lagos Zonal Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Idris Muhammed, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Muhammed said the Nigerians arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 3.30a.m on board a chartered Libyan Airlines aircraft.

He said the returnees comprised of 100 females, including four pregnant women and 62 males.

The coordinator, while welcoming the returnees, urged them to be agents of positive change by joining the campaign against irregular migration.

"Migration is protected by International and national statutes for movement of people through proper regularisation of papers that will protect and save you against risks of irregular migrations," Muhammed said.

He disclosed that NEMA recently hosted a team from the European Union on monitoring and evaluation of the special EU intervention on assisted voluntary return of migrants.

According to him, NEMA interfaced with them on the ways of improving the present EU Assisted Voluntary Returnees programme being run by IOM.

He said gaps were identified, especially on logistics.

Ogunleye further argued that Adejoh and his elder brother were just trying to implicate him due to his refusal to lease out his land to them.

NCC To Resolve Kogi State MTN Shutdown

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:55 AM PST

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will this week meet with Kogi State top officials to resolve the MTN's base transmitting station (BTS) shutdown issue.

Executive Commissioner of NCC, Sunday Dare, is expected to lead the NCC officials to Lugard House in Lokoja to meet the state officials on the issue.
Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria has expressed dismay over the shutdown of its base transmitting facilities by the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) over alleged tax default.

On Thursday, 24 January, the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) shutdown MTN Nigeria's facilities over failure to pay tax obligations to the tune of N120 million to the state government.

MTN said in a statement that the state government was demanding for immediate payment of Social Service Contribution levy, Employee Development levy and annual rent for Right-of-Way on fibre optics cable.

According to Tobechukwu Okigbo, MTN's Corporate Relations Executive, the Taxes and Levies Act which introduced the Social Service Contribution and Economic Development levies mandates the Joint Tax Board to recommend chargeable fees which will be subject to the Minister of Finance's approval.

"To the best of our knowledge, the Minister of Finance's recommendation as provided in the Act is yet to be issued, and as such, it is unclear if the imposition of the fee by the Kogi State Government is on a solid legal footing.

"We wish to state that we have met in full all our tax obligations to the Kogi State government and are not in arrears," he said.

He added: "On request, we have furnished the KGIRS on multiple occasions with documentary evidence proving our full compliance with extant state laws on the matter.

"At this stage, the demands of the KGIRS, if honoured, amounts to multiple taxations and the arbitrary shut down of our base transceiver stations and harassment of our partners will stand in the way of a reasonable resolution," he said.
