Here are the most abused substances in Nigeria

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:20 PM PST

Here are the most abused substances in Nigeria

Drug and substance abuse have always been a Nigerian problem, but with the Nigerians under 30, the problem becomes more worrying by the year.
In 2017, Pulse did a breakdown of the most consumed drugs in Nigeria, amidst the storm created by drug seizures by the National Association for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and deaths resulting from drug overdose.

Then, 'Black Mamba' the dangerously and widely consumed marijuana strain that gained notoriety in Nigerian through 2017 also got a discussion.

On January 2, 2018, via "The Conversation," CNN dropped a list of the most addictive substances in the world;

1. Heroin

2. Cocaine

3. Nicotine

4. Barbiturates (downers)

5. Alcohol

That's not beyond comprehension. Drug abuse has become of contemporary life, music and the now mainstream 'trap culture.' Synthetic marijuana is now treated as a Nigerian rite of passage; an object of 'cool.'

That said, In Nigeria, however, there might be a slight difference in the substances abused. Nigerians consume downers, nicotine and alcohol more than cocaine and heroin due to affordability.

In addition to downers, nicotine, and alcohol, opiates (part of the opioid family) and psychoactive drugs are the most abused substances in Nigeria.

A 2015 study conducted by World Bank collection of development indicators placed smoking prevalence among adult male Nigerians at 17.4%. An alcohol consumption study conducted by the World Health Organization placed that fifty-six percent (56%) of Nigerians over the age of 15 consume alcohol.

The study also reveals that fifty percent (50%) of Nigerians in urban areas consume alcohol.

Nigerians are more into the different strains of marijuana - a psychoactive drug, the opioid pain medication, tramadol, refnol, and meth. Another highly abused substance in Nigeria is an opiate, codeine - which has since been banned.

A study of secondary schools in Northern Nigeria used by Wikipedia states that, "Substance abuse ranged between 1.1 ‑ 3.5% with a male to female ratio of substance abuse of 3:1. 3% smoked cigarettes, benzodiazepines abused by 3.5% and solvents by 1.5%. Abuse of cocaine and heroin was 1.1% and 1.3% respectively."

A NAFDAC lecture on "The Problem of Drugs/Substance Abuse in Nigeria" by Professor Mojisola Adeyeye at the University of Benin states that the recommended dosage for Tramadol was between, 50mg - 100mg but Nigerians now consume about 225mg of Tramadol - and even up to 400mg.

Every other month, news and reports document seizures of incredible amounts of Tramadol shipment by members of the Nigerian Customs.

Asides that, a May 7, 2018 article on Premium Times also named an analgesic, Alabukun, Aspirin and Valium, a Benzodiazepin as some of the most abused pharmaceutical drugs in Nigeria through self-medication.

''Heartwork'', Peruzzi delivers good pop music but not enough to make a dent on the scene.

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:15 PM PST

Peruzzi

Very few artists have the power to craft infectious hooks that you're caught singing without even noticing like Peruzzi and this is the greatest attribute he brings on his debut EP, ''Heartwork.''

''Heartwork'', Peruzzi

Peruzzi is the new 'flava in the ear' for anyone seeking a commercial hit, his ability to craft a good sing-along hook is the reason why Davido snapped him up and has hung onto him like a member of the DP crew [Davido and Peruzzi] rather than an artist he signed, featuring on a number of records together with a joint EP also reportedly in the works.

Despite 2baba's legacy and discography of hit anthems, Peruzzi is the reason why we scream to 'Amaka' every time it gets played and while the world longed for his solo singles, he kept our appetites whet with timely clips on his social media pages of him singing in the studio that served as an assurance that our man was working and with time, we shall see the result.

Having lost out to Teni in the Headies 2018, Rookie of the year category, the duo again went head to head all year and while the former consistently set the pace with her singles, Peruzzi kept up on her heels with an impressive list of features.

And on Friday, December 21, 2018, he released his debut EP, ''Heartwork.''

Now there is one thing common with pop music in recent years, an artist discovers a particular sound that captures the attention of young listeners, then they repeatedly deploy this sound over the next couple of songs, so that people would be forced to get into it, making it more of a trend chase than actual musical growth and in the chase for appeal and instant success, they lose their originality or ability to create from their heart and that is what ''Heartwork'' suffers from.

The EP opens with the 'Intro' featuring Sugarbana, a mellow tune that sees Peruzzi officially announce himself and what he is about with Sugarbana lacing with some melodious reggae vibe with the next track, 'Did You'? following an identical pattern but this time narrating a tale of dishonesty in a relationship.

On 'Champion Lover', the project's first guest artist comes in form of Burna Boy as they deliver one of the EP's choice records. The lyrics isn't really anything memorable, but they casually await that lover's call as Burna adds some spice to the song making it a truly enjoyable listen.

'Craze' has that clean stylistic approach to his sound as he brings the 'Amaka' character back to life. On the reggae-inspired 'Dina' featuring Jamaican superstar Popcaan, the vocal styles of himself and Popcaan provides a good blend to make this a vibe.

'Bleed' is a powerful record and a personal favorite. One that takes a fairly different route, delivered on soft drumming beats as he talks about waiting for love.

Davido lends a helping hand on 'Try' as they create that rhythmic sound that we have become accustomed to. 'Majesty' is that standout record that can easily make for a radio single with the EP closing with 'Sangbana' which sounds like something better suited for a Wande Coal.

Peruzzi had a really busy year, doing enough to catapult his name to star status, largely with the help of his DMW family, ending the year with more than 20 collaborations/features to his name.

He is a lover boy and that is evident in his topics; [love and good vibes] on the project.

'Heartwork' is eleven tracks of what we have come to expect but not what we hoped it will be. Very few surprises or stretch of his limit with each track having identical flows, similar beat structures and recycled lines.

All in all, the story of Peruzzi in the last year will likely read thus; a talented singer, not entirely unique but armed with infectious vocals and well crafted hooks that almost always compels an exciting listen.

Pleasant in most songs, average on many others but doing enough to become a dominant leech on the pop scene in 2018 but when it mattered most, on his own body of work, he somehow stutters on the shoulders of expectations failing to provide a climax to match the build-up and fandom he enjoyed all year.

''Heartwork'' EP provides more of a good starting point rather than a compelling introduction into the world of one predicted as the next big thing.

John Legend is the perfect example of how men can be allies in the #MeToo movement

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST

John Legend

There has been a seismic shift against sexual harassment in every industry thanks to the #MeToo movement and catalysed by brave women and men in the entertainment industry who have spoken up against the decades of abuse of power by certain individuals.

The prosecution of film giant Harvey Weinstein is just one such example of how the mighty have fallen and how what was done in the dark, has been brought to the light.

Now, conversations are being had about sexual abuse and more victims are being given safe spaces to come forward to name and shame their abusers.

Rumours have swirled around R. Kelly and his penchant for underage girls for years but for some strange reason, despite numerous allegations and a high-profile court case, he has never been prosecuted and continues to be supported and uplifted by fans and peers alike.

R Kelly

John Legend is the only star to appear in the documentary Surviving R Kelly. Producer Dream Hampton claimed Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle, Celine Dion, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim and Questlove all refused to participate.

In the documentary, John Legend said, ''R. Kelly has brought so much pain to so many people. Time's up for R. Kelly.''

The first of the six-part series aired on Lifetime on Thursday, interviewing dozens former friends, family members and colleagues about the singer who all make shocking claims about the singer abusing women and young girls for the most part of his career.

But Legend is essentially the only fellow artist who agreed to speak out where many more declined.

John Legend later took to Twitter to defend his participation in the documentary and praised charity 'A Long Walk Home' for advocating on behalf of the survivors.

More so, in the last year, the idea of allyship and and gender dynamics have shifted considerably. We are having increasingly open dialogues surrounding sexual harassment and assault. In the middle of this shift, many men have vocalised feeling unfairly targeted by the #MeToo movement. However, for every man that has felt that way, there are men who understand the need to lend their voice to the movement and that in order to catalyse change, they need to hold themselves and their fellow men accountable.

We define male allies as members of an advantaged group committed to building relationships with women, understanding the social privilege provided by their gender and addressing the overall gender imbalance. The #MeToo movement, as advanced as it has become, needs male allies to add a necessary dimension to the fight.

John Legend, in speaking out, potentially putting his career and his relationships with his peers at risk is the perfect example of how men can be allies. It means being intentional in throwing off the shroud of male privilege and demanding accountability whilst being involved in a pivotal conversation. For men who also want to know how they lend their voices and make a difference, here are some key points.

Here are 3 ways men can be better allies:

1.Initiate and hold open and honest conversations with other men
The first way that men can position themselves as allies to victims of sexual assault and harassment is by participating in challenging conversations, particularly with other men.

An open and honest dialogue helps to break down stereotypes and harmful attitudes whilst putting together a platform for mutually respectful relationships and creating space for self-reflection and self- improvement.

2.Self- evaluate and be empathetic
In addition to challenging their peers, men should aim to address the ways in which they may be unknowingly contributing to a culture of disrespect and/ or abuse.

People who take the initiative to critically evaluate themselves may be able to identify and address their bias that are guiding their actions, in turn becoming more empathetic allies.

3.Make it a priority to speak up against harmful behaviour
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and so does cultural change. It begins with individuals committed to making a difference therefore, it's essential for men to speak up when they encounter problematic behaviour in their day to day lives.

If you witness verbal or physical harassment, intervene if you feel safe doing so. In some cases, the safest way to help may be to notify an authority. In any case, remember that silence or inaction is essentially compliance.

Coachella 2019 and Burna Boy’s grief: Is African music industry underrated?

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:00 PM PST

You see, the story is, the Coachella 2019 Lineup was announced and this music star who was one of the most remarkable acts of 2018 was unhappy about the tiny font size used to display his name on the banner.

Coachella 2019 and Burna Boy's grief

From his amazing performance at his Lagos concert in December 2018, it's easy to agree that Burna Boy deserves a place on one of the world's biggest music stage, the Coachella Festival.

But this "African Giant" won't jump miserably at the opportunity. If he's going to travel across the Atlantic to hold a mic at one of the most prominent appearances of his career, then it better be like he imagined.

You see, the story is, the Coachella 2019 Lineup was announced and this music star who was one of the most remarkable acts of 2018 was unhappy about the tiny font size used to display his name on the banner.

So he demanded via his Instastory that Coachella organisers fix things.

And after what was a derogatory reaction from Nigerians on social media, he published another Instagram story to explain the reason for his angst.

Now, while it's easy to quickly dispose of Burna's protest as an egoist's demonstration, it would cause us no harm to give it some thought to at least assess its validity.

Is African Music and Creativity Disrespected on the Global Stage?

It's normal for people today to quickly pull out the racist card in their defence whenever they want to prove a point. However, not everything happens because a person is black or white.

Matter-of-factly, Afro music has come a long way in recent years, with a growing acceptance across the world. We have witnessed collaborations between our African stars and some of the biggest artistes from across the globe.

These achievements are worth celebrating, and points to even bigger feats to come.

In fact, having Mr Eazi and Burna Boy as part of the lineup for this year's Coachella is yet another trophy for the African music industry.

Yes, we admit it would have been a greater win for us if our own was selected to be one of the major acts for the year.

However, why that hasn't happened yet is not something to scrutinize through the slightly tinted lenses of racism. There may be a more objective interpretation to it.

A Larger Font - Yay or Nay?

Firstly, "Giant" or no giant, there are some other few things that need to be considered before you are awarded the grand medal of a larger font.

How much record sales has Burna Boy? What is the current level of popularity for his type of music? Is his social following huge?

With a look at these figures behind each of the artistes for Coachella 2019, it may be safe to say Burna's place on the banner may have been influenced by statistics than by skin colour.

So perhaps a more worthy protest our Burna could have picked up is: What will it take for us to be better noticed? How can we claim more seats at the global table?

Or do we build our own table and invite the world?

If you ask me, that's exactly what all our African music giants have been doing for the last few decades.

And we're almost there. Hang on, OluwaBurna.

Tears as eight PDP accident victims are buried

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:59 AM PST

Dead PDP Members
Tears flowed heavily in Oju at the funeral rites of eight members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that died in a ghastly motor accident last Friday on their way to the Zone C senatorial campaign flag-off in Agatu.

PDP chieftains, candidates and officials, as well as bereaved family members, battled to hold back tears as they took turns to give orations at the combined church service.

Governor Samuel Ortom, in a funeral oration, described their deaths as tragic and painful, saying the patriots died when their services were most needed in the build-up to the 2019 general elections.

The governor prayed to God to grant their souls eternal rest and their family members the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.

He directed the immediate appointment of one member of the families to provide succour for them.

Ortom also told mourners the excavated portion of the Aliade-Oju road would be fixed within three weeks.

He charged the Igede nation to remain peaceful as they go into the final phase of the 2019 elections.

Former Senate President David Mark and senatorial candidate for Zone C, Comrade Abba Moro, in separate orations, said they were heartbroken and felt a sense of personal losses.

They consoled the bereaved families and prayed God to grant their fallen heroes and heroine eternal rest, describing their death as tragic and traumatising.

Member representing Oju/Obi federal constituency in the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu, who could not hold tears, said he lost key members of his campaign team in the accident.

He pointed out that the day would remain a black day in the history of Igede nation.

Bishop Methodist Church in Oju Local Government Area, Rt. Reverend Odeh Ocheke, urged the congregation to prepare for the last day as nobody knows when and where it would come.

Ortom had paid homage on the Adirahu Ny Igede, Chief Oga Ero, a retired Commissioner of Police, on arrival where he condoled the entire Igede nation on the tragic loss of their illustrious sons and daughters.

PDP not a threat to Buhari’s re-election — Keyamo

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:06 AM PST

Festus Kayemo(SAN)
Festus Keyamo (SAN), Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Presidential Campaign Council, says the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is not a threat in the 2019 elections.

He said that the PDP would never serve as a threat to the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari

Keyamo made the claim on Thursday during the inauguration of the Women and Youths Wing of the APC Presidential Campaign Team in Abuja.

However, he called on APC supporters to intensify efforts towards ensuring that the party recorded massive victory at the polls.

" They are no longer a threat to President Muhammadu Buhari because their effort is collapsing.  They have more than four hundred groups but the groups are now dropping on a weekly basis.

" It clearly shows that they cannot function without public funds and they discovered that it is no longer business as usual," he said.

Keyamo also said that the opposition party has been disseminating false information to tarnish the image of President Buhari which would not help them at the polls.
Also speaking, the former Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, commended the role of Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari for galvanizing support for the re-election of the President.

Abba assured the President of their determination to mobilise women and youths to ensure victory in the 2019 elections.

On her part, Mrs Pauline Tallen expressed confidence that the women and youths of the party would do their best to ensure Buhari's victory.

" Women and youths are the backbones of every electioneering campaign and we will engage them door-to-door.

" Mr President, we believe in you, as women we believe our hard work will be the reward,'' she said.

On his part, the Chairman of Board of Trustees of Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), said that President Buhari was contesting for the second term to save Nigeria from an unpatriotic set of people.
Ali however, charged members of the Buhari Support Organization to re-double their efforts to ensure that the President was re-elected

7 hidden African islands we want to explore in 2019

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:02 AM PST

While Seychelles, Mauritius, Zanzibar are some of the popular islands in Africa, there are other smaller islands that we'd love to also see and know about.

Some of them might be more popular than others. One thing is clear though, we'd take these African islands over the Caribbeans because of their fascinating history, unique wildlife and beautiful beaches.

1. Djerba

Djerba

The largest island of North Africa, Djerba is located off the coast of southern Tunisia. It is also home to the 1977 location of the Mos Eisley exterior scenes in the first Star Wars movie. Here, you can be sure of Arabian nights merged with beautiful sandy beaches — think turbans, camels, saltwater and of course, lots of sand.

2. Mayotte

Mayotte

Mayotte is a French country of islands between Mozambique and Madagascar, off east Africa, hence referred to as an archipelago. It is a beautiful paradise spot on the Indian ocean very popular to divers who come to spot amazing and rare animals such as corals, humpback whales, and lots more. Check out the reasons to explore Mayotte this year.

3. Cape Verde

Cape Verde

Located 570 kilometres off Senegal, Cape Verde is a collection of 10 islands which spread out into the Atlantic Ocean off Africa's west coast. The small islands are known for their special offerings — Sal, is most popular for its calm sandy beaches while Santa Maria bay is more upbeat with the happening restaurants, bars, music and vibrant nightlife.

4. São Tomé

São Tomé

São Tomé Island is a large island off the western coast of Central Africa. It's very reclusive but visitors that do make it have access to uncharted waters and go diving and snorkelling. There's also the chocolate factory and the sleepy fishermen's villages to explore.

5. Mumbo Island

Mumbo Island

Are you looking for a new, exclusive African experience? Well, then take a trip to the sparsely-populated Mumbo Island in Malawi. The crystal clear waters and hidden coves are perfect for swimming, hiking, snorkelling, kayaking and diving. The small island camp offers accommodation to only 14 guests in its private tents, which is only accessible by crossing a wooden bridge from Mumbo's main beach.

6. Quirimbas & Bazaruto Archipelagos

Quirimbas & Bazaruto Archipelagos

Both contenders for romantic hideaway spots, these archipelagos are off the coast of Mozambique. They offer rare and endangered sea animals alongside powder-white beaches, palm trees, and clear turquoise waters. The collection of islands offer their own special touch and you can hop on a cruise to enjoy what each island has to offer. They also offer the usual water-related sports like snorkelling, diving, etc.

7. Lamu Island

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is among the Lamu Archipelago islands of Kenya. A little more sleepy than the other islands, Lamu island offers culture and history in Lamu Old Town, which is one of the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa.

I’ve nothing to do with poisoning of three boys, says Bayelsa prophet

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:47 AM PST

George Odoko
The founder of George Odoko World Outreach Ministry, Apostle George Odoko, has denied making a prophecy that led to the maltreatment and poisoning of three children by their father, Sunday Otasi.

Otasi is being detained at the police command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, for poisoning his three sons by forcing them to drink sniper.

Otasi, 42, who hails from Agbobiri-Okodia in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state, took his three sons, Success Otasi, 14; Miracle Otasi 12 and Godstime Otasi, 10, to a bush along Glory Drive Road at Igbogene in Yenagoa.

The suspect was said to have tied his children in the bush with the help of his younger brother, one Levai Ayah and forced the killer substance down their throats.

While Godstime and Miracle died, the eldest son, Success, was rushed to the hospital where he is battling for his life.

Otasi claimed that a Yenagoa-based prophet, Goerge Odoko of George Odoko Outreach Ministries told him that his children were wizards and asked him to bring them for deliverance.

But Odoko, in a statement, denied there was no time he gave such prophecy describing the claims of the killer father as mischievous, misleading and devilish.

He said: "First let us express our deepest condolences to the departed souls and commiserate with their family. Truth is irrepressible.

"No amount of blackmail can destroy it. Neither can it be submerged by the syndicated falsehood.

"We want to state it categorically that it is another campaign of calumny against the person of Apostle George Odoko and Ministry.

"There was never at any time I met with the said person and gave the prophecy in question.

"It is nothing but deliberate mischief to rubbish my person and ministry.

"God's mission and mandate have no falsehood and I have no hand in the prophecy and I am condemning the dastardly act and heinous crime in the strong term as reported in some sections of the media.
"We call on the members of George Odoko World Outreach Ministry to remain steadfast because God has given us victory over our enemies".

Do you know about Ghana's fantasy coffins?

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:47 AM PST

Ghana's fantasy coffins

From chili pepper coffins to airplane caskets, Ghana is putting the fun in funeral. What casket would you never be caught dead in?

Fantasy coffins are a special custom-made type of caskets very common to the Great Accra Region of Ghana, made to reflect the importance and personality of the deceased.

Fantasy coffins are also called proverbial coffins, abebuu adekai, or "okadi adekai" in Ga language. They were made popular by Kane Kwei (1922-1992) who is considered the father of fantasy coffins, and Joseph "Paa Joe" Ashong (b. 1947), one of the most famous coffin makers of his time.

The belief behind this within the Ga people is that elaborate coffins influence how the deceased live in the afterlife. They believe that life continues in the afterlife the same way it did in the real world and that ancestors can influence the lives of the living. Hence, the survived relatives try as much as possible to ensure that a dead person is sympathetic towards them as early as possible.

In some places in Nigeria, the social status of the deceased will reflect on how large and costly the burial is. However, in Ghana, the social status of the deceased is reflected by the importance, success and usage of an exclusive coffin during a burial, which will only be seen on the day of the funeral.

ALSO READ: Chale Wote 2018 street art festival transcends language

The coffins often symbolise the dead people's professions but certain shapes, such as a sword, stool coffin, or some animals represent regal, priestly insignia and clan totems. Hence, only certain people such as kings, priests, heads of families are allowed to be buried in such coffins.

The use of these coffins within the Ga people have been traced to the beginning of the 20th century, to Ga chiefs and priests. However, Christians began to integrate it as part of local funeral culture around the 1950s.

The business of caskets

"We are not happy when people die," Paa Joe, who has been in the business for over 50 years, tells CNN. "We feel pity. We feel like giving them a befitting farewell, like giving them what they were doing when they were alive to continue because we believe life continues after life her."

Whatever the case, fantasy coffins is good business in Ghana, especially for Kane Kwei and Paa Joe, who made into a family business.

On a good month, or bad month depending on who you're speaking to, the coffin makers can construct at least 10 coffins for clients.

According to BBC, customers from more than 20 countries have requested and bought these coffins from workshops across Ghana and woodworking students in South Korea, Russia, US and Denmark have come to Ghana to learn the trade.

Paa Joe says that fantasy coffins can cost $5,000 to $15,000 for international clients, who mostly want them for showcase in museums, etc. This is because these types of coffins are made from hard woods like mahogany for durability and to guard against cracking and insect attacks.

Coffins intended for burial, however, are usually made from soft wood and prices range from $400 and $1000, especially for local clients. The family of the deceased determine the designs, which range from airplanes to cars to canons to animals and farm produce.

Fantasy coffins made by Paa Joe and Kane Kwei were shown in an exhibition for the first time at Les Magiciens de la terre at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1989, hence gaining international recognition.

In fact, the fantasy coffin family business had caught the attention of late former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and former US president Jimmy Carter, who reportedly purchased two fantasy coffins made by him. Former US president Bill Clinton also visited Paa Joe in 1998.

Find the best Suya in Lagos, follow this sure guides

best Suya in Lagos

If you ever find yourself in Surulere one evening and you're tired from the day's work; sad, heartbroken, or just want to feel lifted, I have something for you.

Get on Adeniran Ogunsanya from that Shitta bridge. You'll see a Suya guy on the right just a few hundred metres from the bridge, with a big table, and plenty skewered beef Suya.

Don't stop. Keep moving.

Don't stop till you get to Tastee Fried Chicken, but that's not why you're here. You're here for the Suya that is directly opposite.

The guys you meet there will ask about work if you go on a weekday, and about your family if its a weekend, just as they give you a piece of meat to get the juices flowing and your wallet dancing.

Place your order (this is the part where it gets interesting), and watch.

They get a sheet of beef, cut off your portion with those knives slicing through like a hot knife through butter. Then they add some shaki, that meat that looks like your towel, then liver, and even some gizzard if you like.

Your usual Suya guy will chop your meat up on your paper at this point, but who said anything about these guys being usual? They transfer your Suya into a bowl of spiced oil sitting impatiently on fire,

After a few seconds of stirring, they take out your little pieces of happiness and throw it into the fire for a few seconds. All the excess oil burns away like all your troubles as you stare into the flames. Then Suya leaves the fire and meets paper. Ask for veggies and fruits if you want.

Just before they wrap it up, quickly take a piece and taste it. Feel the just-the-right-amount-of-cooked meat crush between your teeth, feel the juices splatter in your mouth.

It is in these moments you will understand why Chinese restaurants do all the cooking in front of their customers. There is something about all your senses experiencing the food and having it climax in your mouth that makes the whole experience amazing.

This is the Suya way.

If you find yourself in Surulere one evening, and you're tired from the day's work, sad, heartbroken, or just want to feel lifted, this Suya is for you.

Surviving R-Kelly documentary

However, the music icon who has a number of hit songs to his cradle has been in the eyes of the storm over the last decade for allegations bothering on molestation, rape and sexual relationships with underaged women.

A new documentary, #SurvivingRKelly which features some of the women who have come out to speak about their ordeal in his hands has since sparked off a conversation on social media, Twitter to precise.

These tweets posted by people across the globe express the shock at which the once admired music icon had allegedly abused young women at a time when his career was at it's prime.

It's time we do away with public shaming on the Internet

It's time we do away with public shaming on the Internet

Public shaming is one of the bad aspects of the Internet and it needs to be discouraged.

Today, most of us will squeeze our faces in disgust watching a mob on a street execute a petty thief with tyres, petrol and fire. The reaction would be swift and universal, "this is barbaric!"

On social media though, our reactions will be different. Not only will we most likely glee with delight at the sight of someone being 'dragged' or 'trolled', but we also would likely participate.

The debate with public shaming on the Internet or outrage on social media is how far a mob or a group of people who see themselves as the 'morally right' will go in addressing aberrant behaviour.

Take, for example, the gist that was the talk of multiple timelines on Christmas Day, 2018. A popular lady on Twitter was called out for allegedly selling sub-standard wigs to some of her clients.

Fair enough, if this allegation is true, then there was nothing wrong in addressing this bad behaviour, which ultimately aims to make people do better.

The mob did more than that with its 'righteous' outrage as it dragged her for slay photos, fashion sense and erroneously connected it with her line of business. Some details about her personal life also made it to Twitter, which had no correlation with the issue at hand.

It later morphed into an ugly personal attack which led her to deleting her Twitter account briefly.

Let me give you another example. In December 2018, a video of DMW act Peruzzi and a young lady in bed leaked online.

DMW act Peruzzi

The video did the rounds, and quickly enough the personal details of the young woman in the video were revealed. The act which is known as doxxing revealed her details with malicious intent to shame her for her sexual lifestyle.

There was nothing wrong with the lady in the video being sexually involved with a popular music act. The only thing she was guilty of is recording him without his consent. This is what the mob should have focused on and not shame her for her lifestyle.

Mob justice is more or less the bullying of people and shaming them which has nothing to do with responding and correcting bad behaviour.

The mob parades itself as a gathering of the morally righteous which uses outrage as a battering ram to publicly shame targets who have come in their crosshairs. The mob feeds off outrage, a perceived slight, that fuels it in carrying out public shame on the Internet.

The problem with outrage is that if unchecked, it consumes everything. Outrage in the hands of a mob is usually a weapon of destruction and not a weapon of justice.

With most cases of public shaming in the digital era, there is no middle ground. The irate mob is the judge, jury and executioner. It gives no room for apologies, context and second chances. It is unforgiving, and this should be a cause for concern.

The funny thing about social media is that it shrinks us into pixels of our avatars. This is what the mob sees when it is outraged, a digital lampoon of whoever they want they want to publicly shame.

It pummels, drags, trolls and blasts its victim not caring about emotions and feelings. It does not care about remorse. All it knows is to cancel and delete your standing in the digital community.

In the heat of its outrage, members of the righteous mob, the cancellers of anyone who they find annoying, tend to be mental abusers. Excessive bashing can affect mental health as we must have seen with the lady caught up in the wig drama.

Public correction, not public shaming should be the answer. We shouldn't be silent in correcting wrong behaviour but we shouldn't ridicule or shame. It serves no purpose other than to leave people vulnerable to malicious attacks from people with their own shortcomings.

Cancel culture and Internet shaming has cost people their jobs, livelihood and reputation. A digital stain is harder to wipe off than a verbal insult. People who have been victims of the mob find it hard to get back to their normal lives online.

The conversation should be how can we make erring people behave better and realize their makes and not destroy who they are. Public shaming in the digital age is similar to jungle justice.

If it is wrong to kill suspected criminals instead of allowing justice prevail while leaving room for reform, it is also wrong when a mob does the same on a social platform.

There are exceptions though. Death sentences are reserved for criminals who have committed heinous crimes, public shaming should also be reserved for individuals who have shown no remorse for their distateful acts over time.

Unfortunatly, most of the people the righteous mob have shamed did not warrant the pariah treatment or total obliteration.

It's time we do away with public shaming on the Internet.

Fathia Balogun shares encounter with young man who wants to be her boyfriend

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:20 AM PST

Fathia Balogun

Fathia Balogun has a new crush who isn't giving up on dating her and she is finding it really cool.

Age is only a number as Faithia Balogun shares an interesting story of a young man who is trying to woo her despite their age difference.

The veteran actress shared her encounter with the mysterious young man on her Instagram page on Friday, October 26, 2019. According to even though she told the man her second son is about to get into the university and that she has a man, the young man has remained optimistic.

"I met one young man who is around 30 years here in US. He asked for my name and number. He asked I show him my IG page. He wants a relationship. I told him, my second child is on his way to university already and I have a man already. He said I lied with my age. I collected his number and insist that I won't give him mine.

"I couldn't stop laughing all through the trip back home. I won't call him but I truly like how self-assured he came across, smart, full of life, optimistic and I need not say how handsome he is. I thought about him more than once, had to delete his number. The young men out there are not playing. This is more than STEWWWW," she wrote.

Fathia Balogun might be aging beautifully but it still goes to show that her beauty still brings all the boys to the yard. Guys, it looks like our celebrities are getting comfortable with showing off their crushes online. Recall a few weeks ago, Mercy Aigbe shared a screenshot of a private conversation with a secret admirer.

Mysterious man begs to date Mercy Aigbe on Instagram

Mercy Aigbe

Wonders they say will never end as a mysterious man has professed his undying love for Mercy Aigbe on Instagram. Apparently disturbed by the message, Mercy Aigbe took to her Instagram page on Friday, October 19, 2018, where she posted a screenshot of the message she received from the mysterious man simply identified as "Mr Paul."

"Guys so as I sit waiting patiently for more @mag_divas customers at my store, I decided to quickly check my DM and lo and behold I came across this message ........ pls I need your advise what reply should I give this person #funnydms," she captioned the photo.

As hilarious as this may sound, but it is kind of disturbing when mysterious people send DMs on social media declaring love for people they don't know personally or have even met physically.

Mercy Aigbe's gorgeous photos on Instagram might have been the main reason for her crush's sleepless nights. However, we wonder if this is the first time Mercy Aigbe will be getting unsolicited messages on social media.

Man charged with defiling neighbour’s daughter

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:05 AM PST

Court Of Law

A 35-year-old man, Ezekiel Daniel, was yesterday arraigned at a Daura Road Chief Magistrates' Court, Kaduna, for allegedly defiling his neighbour's six-year-old daughter.

Magistrate Mrs Zainab Mohammed ordered that Daniel be kept behind bars pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court did not take the plea of the defendant, as the prosecution prayed for his remand pending DPP's advice.

The case was adjourned till January 18 for DPP's advice.

The defendant, a resident of Kinkinau, Kaduna metropolis, is standing trial on a one-count charge of defilement.

Prosecutor Sunday Baba said the defendant's neighbour, Chinyere Ebuka, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station on December 15.

He alleged that the defendant lured the girl into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.

Baba said the defendant was caught in the act by neighbours when the girl cried out of pains.

He added that during police investigation the defendant confessed to having committed the crime.

The offence contravenes Section 260 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.

Reasons why we can't forget Goldie after her death

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:04 AM PST

Goldie "Susan Harvey."

Sunday, February 14, 2016

Three years from that unfortunate day, the Nigerian entertainment scene still misses the artiste known as Susan Harvey.

Today we list three things we can't forget about the lovely Goldie.

Entertainer

Goldie knew how to put on a spectacle. She was a joy to watch on stage. Goldie took time to perfect her craft. Granted she wasn't the best of singers but she made up for it by putting up a spectacle whenever she performed. You couldn't deny the fact that she was a good entertainer.

Fashionista

This word gets tossed around carelessly but Goldie was a true fashionista. The late singer knew how to make an appearance and command attention whenever she walked into the room, and that's because she dressed to attract attention. She was very stylish with her dressing and was never duplicated.

Fearless

The late Goldie was fearless. When she took part in Big Brother Africa in 2012 she received a lot of hateful words and criticims. Goldie did not allow the negative feedback to hold her back. And this was how Goldie was throughout her career. No matter the backlash she got, Goldie did not allow it overwhelm her.

Wife or hostage? The weird tradition that allows men obtain wives by kidnapping young women

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:57 AM PST

Wife or hostage?

Dowries and bride price seem more humane in comparison to the payment for a kidnapped child.

In Nigeria, with over 250 ethnic groups, there are so many traditions that it's hard to keep track of them all. When it comes to marriage traditions, the story is the same. However, there are some similarities — man sees woman, proceeds to seek hand-in-marriage from girl's parents, pays some form of compensation and goes home with wife.

That seems like quite a normal process, right? Well, it hasn't always been the norm in some areas.

Marriage by kidnapping in Nigeria

Within the Tiv/Igede tribe of Benue state, marriage in present times is a thing of wealth and celebration, just like in many other parts of Nigeria.

In previous times though, tradition allowed a man who found a girl he likes to organise to kidnap her from the streets. He would hold her hostage and then proceed to negotiate the marriage rights with her parents. The whole process involves gift giving, rituals such as gun firing and warning other intending suitors to keep away from her. After the whole rites, the lady is officially his wife.

This bizarre marriage tradition is so ancient in Tiv culture that it has been phased out over time. Now, marriage is more respectful and the woman has an actual say in the whole process.

While we would like to think that this marriage practice is completely outdated, it is still very much alive among the Latuka tribe of Sudan, and even more bizarre.

The Latuka tribe are a quiet people tucked away in the Southernmost parts of Sudan, who practice subsistence and livestock farming. They have been able to withstand the influence of western religions and technologies in their communities. This is obvious in their enduring practice of marriage by abduction.

Just like in ancient Tiv culture, when a Latuka man sees a woman he likes, he kidnaps her and keeps her hostage, after which he goes to her father's house with an elder to seek his blessing on their marriage. If the father of the bride agrees, he is expected to show his approval by beating up his prospective son-in-law. However, if the father disagrees, the son-in-law either returns the lady to her parents or marries her anyway. Most times, the man chooses the latter.

The place of tradition in modern times

Bride price and dowries have often caused controversy in these times when we cautiously wade the waters of feminism, while attempting to dismantle patriarchy. In September 2018, several conversations begun after award-winning author and activist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, spoke about the commercialism around marriage, and stated very clearly that she is "not a fan of bride price."

At her meet and greet in Lagos, she was quoted to say, "If you go back in history, the idea of marriage is different from what it is today. Yes, there was bride price where fundamentally you sort of give things to the bride's family, but there was also an exchange of gifts… and it was a bit more fluid... In my opinion I think we should just get rid of the whole idea of money. I think it just ruins things."

While many argued for the need to preserve the culture of bride price, it is important to note that this frightening marriage by abduction, which essentially gives the woman no voice in the whole process of her own marriage, is part of Sudanese culture. So, before we become outraged about how alien and frightening the marriage by abduction is to us, it may as well be justified as part of their "culture" to them.

African culture is no doubt beautiful and deserves to be preserved, but how does one determine what is worth keeping and what should be abolished? Where do we draw the line?

Singer defends his father’s dance moves

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:52 AM PST

Singer defends his father's dance moves
The singer, son of Ademola Adeleke, also known as the dancing senator, says he is not embarrassed by his dad's moves.

Sina Rambo has stepped in to defend his fathers dance moves.

In an interview with Punch's Saturday Beats, the singer had only nice things to say about his father's dancing.

His father is the newly elected Senator Ademola Adeleke who became a viral sensation after a video of his victory dance surfaced on the internet.

Rambo said: "When the spirit of the Lord comes upon my heart, I will dance like David danced. Ashamed? I cannot be embarrassed with the way my father danced. Look, my father will not change for anything! He's been dancing since the 80s or why do you think they call him Jackson?

Trust me at every family party, we dig it out but he ends up winning because he just never stops. Jackson! Baddest.

But don't be misled; he is a man of extreme wisdom who knows how to conduct himself at all times. There is time to celebrate and there is time to work. I'm sure he will definitely do a great job serving his country to the best of his ability."

He also shared a picture of his father on his Instagram page. The picture was simply captioned with a smiley.

His father, Adeleke, defeated his APC opponent to win the Osun West bye-election.

Unfortunately, he got into the position after his elder brother Isiaka Adeleke, died of mysterious circumstances earlier in the year.

Rambo honoured his late uncle with a picture on Instagram.

His caption read: "I love you uncle Tunji!!! Your selflessness changed our state OSUN forever!!      Thanx for everything and all your sacrifices!!! Your legacy will live on forever!❤ #sherubawon"

By the way, the senator's moves aren't just for politics, they are also perfect for everyone's bae, jollof rice.

Check out comedian EmmaOhMyGod's parody video.
