Chi Modu releases new short film, “Uncategorized”

Posted: 01 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST

Chi Modu releases new short film, "Uncategorized"
A few weeks ago, Pulse Senior Editor, Ayomide Tayo spoke with American-born Nigerian photographer, Chi Modu.

The conversation was about his life, career and the key moments of his career; those moments the average Hip-Hop lover would pay a fortune to hear the intricate details of, as Chi Modu relives them behind a camera.

Now, the legendary photographer whose impact is felt more through his works than through his personality or figure has dropped a short film titled, "Uncategorized," and it documents his love affair with Nigeria, from the passion of one who grew up admiring Nigeria from afar.

He, however, opens with the reasons for his decision to document the very overlooked aspects of Hip-Hop.

As he puts it, Chi Modu, "Sets out to humanize them (the 'bad kids' of Hip-hop). I'm always trying to get to the soul of the person. I want their eyes to tell you something about that human being."

As Tayo wrote, Chi Modu is responsible for some of the most iconic pictures of top figures like Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Mobb Deep, Eazy-E, Dr Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Common and many other rap luminaries.

So, it was no coincidence when Chi Modu again noticed that Nigerian pop culture and subculture stories were not being properly documented for a cogent visual experience. This short film documents the emerging Nigerian pop culture and subculture stories slowly but surely gathering pace for mainstream recognition through the eyes of youth.

As Chi Modu describes, "The youth are always pushing the envelope, it's what they do; and that's why it's so important to give the youth life."

The world renowned photographer describes the idea behind his new film, "The concept behind "Uncategorized" is taking the art to the people. Present your work to the people, let the people decide."

As the video closes with mashed up excerpts of young Nigerians soaking up the delirium of youth in energy-infested atmospheres, Chi Modu claims he sees the youth as Santi's smash hit, "Rapid Fire" proves an apt soundtrack.

3 ways to stay sexually intimate in a long distance relationship

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

Long distance relationships aren't so bothersome if you find the right person and you are willing to make things work, even on the preservation of sexual intimacy.

You can be distant from your boo and still remain as close as ever.
To keep the sexual fire burning despite the distance, here are tips you need.

1. Talk about it. A whole lot

You will spend a whole lot of time apart from your boo and what this means is that to keep the relationship alive, you would need a lot of communication. You can't spend the whole time talking about everything else but sex.

You should get really comfortable with each other. Cover as much ground as you can. Talk about desirespreferences, review the last time you got together, ask each other what you enjoyed and be determined to do more of that. The things that didn't work should be left out.

And it's not just dirty talk. You should share articles and insights, discuss how your sex life affirms and supports the relationship you're working to sustain. Take time to ensure that you're on the same page, and that you're both getting what you need.

You don't have all the time in the world to enjoy sexual intimacy like other couples so the goal should be to make the best out of the little time you get with each other.

By already addressing these issues, you know how to maximize the pleasure in the limited time that you get to spend with each other every now and then.

2. Sexy pictures/videos

This is a no-brainer actually. You should be able to trust your partner enough to protect these private images. Afterall, why go into a long distance relationship in the first instance if you do not trust your partner that much?

Get creative. Send those images and clips.

3. Other methods

Something as simple as a sexy voice note in your turned on voice can do the trick sometimes. But don't cramp your style by limiting yourself to only the things listed in this piece.

Rihanna goes nude for night out in New York

Rihanna goes nude for night out in New York
Rihanna's certainly not afraid to make bold fashion statements and her latest look in New York was one for the books.

Rihanna turned heads when she braved chilly New York on Tuesday evening, wearing an 80's inspired nude jacket and white satin slip skirt.

Rihanna, 30, looked as if she meant business as she stepped out into the rainy night.

The ANTI singer made her grand entrance that evening in a pair of strappy white high heels that showed off her perfectly formed feet.

She added to the neutral theme by carrying a chic, white purse and accessorising with Le Vian necklaces and a simple and classic silver watch. Rihanna's skin looked radiant and she added a dash of hot red lipstick, a winged slick of eye liner, and a shimmering coat of eye shadow, no doubt courtesy of Fenty Beauty.

Rihanna looked every inch the superstar as she made her way outside, protecting her curly jet black locks with an umbrella helpfully carried by an assistant.

Instagram closet 'Haus of Rihanna', who work closely with her styling team already had details of Riri's outfits. Rihanna's over-sized nude blazer was by Y Project. She accessorised with a croc Fendi purse and Manolo Blahnik 'Paloma' sandals.

Niger Republic Governors Arrive Nigeria For President Buhari, APC Campaign In Kano

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:55 PM PST

Two governors from neighbouring Niger Republic have arrived Kano to campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari.

Issa Moussa of Zinder Region and Zakiri Umar of Maradi arrived Kano to campaign for Mr Buhari's reelection. They dressed in 'babanriga,' a traditional attire, designed with APC campaign ornaments.

Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, a spokesperson for Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano, shared pictures his principal took with the two foreign governors as they prepared to receive Mr Buhari in Kano earlier on Thursday.

President  Buhari had since arrived Kano to campaign for himself and other APC candidates in the general elections next month.

No sooner had Mr Tanko-Yakasai shared the pictures on Twitter than a flurry of critical comments began to trickle in, with many reactions pointing to peoples befuddlement.

The development comes barely days after both the presidency and the APC issued separate statements attacking Western diplomatic missions for expressing outrage over Mr Buhari's suspension of Mr Onnoghen, an action widely deemed unconstitutional.

Mr Buhari himself did not say he followed the guidelines enumerated in the Constitution for the removal of a chief justice but said he acted on an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, an auxiliary judicial panel under the presidency.

"This is clearly shocking and absurd," Chris Ngwodo, a foreign affairs expert, told PREMIUM TIMES of the visit of the two Niger governors to Nigeria to campaign for Mr Buhari. "It is simply difficult to process and come to terms with this."

Both Zinder and Maradi have proximity to northern parts of Nigeria from the south of Niger Republic.

Festus Keyamo, a spokesperson for Mr Buhari campaign, and Lanre Issa-Onilu, a spokesperson for the APC, were not immediately available for comments Thursday afternoon. Mr Tanko-Yakasai said he was too busy to respond to enquiries.

While the Niger governors' visit to Nigeria for a political rally may appear strange, the Nigerian electoral law does not seem to have placed restrictions on foreigners hitting the campaign trail with candidates.

"The electoral law is only more pronounced about limits of campaign contributions from foreign elements," according to Clement Nwankwo, a pro-democracy and electoral reform campaigner.

A similar incident played out in the United States in 2016 when British conservative politician, Nigel Farage, joined then-Republican Party candidate Donald Trump to campaign in the American elections.

The affair drew widespread condemnation, with many suggesting that it was abnormal in international diplomatic setting.

Still, Mr Nwankwo suggested that Mr Buhari and APC had by implication undermined their position against the January 26 statement issued by the United States, United Kingdom and European Union on Mr Onnoghen's January 25 suspension.

A presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, had said the three Western diplomatic missions' questioning of Mr Onnoghen's suspension constituted an interference and threatened that Nigeria would raise its forces to assert its sovereignty.

Mr Nwankwo said the presidency's condemnation of the West was hypocritical considering its past statements and actions on similar intervention by Westerners.

"Nigeria in early 2017 sent its troops to The Gambia to forcibly remove Yayah Jammeh if he did not concede defeat," Mr Nwankwo said. "That alone should be enough to see the emptiness in their condemnation of other countries for issuing harmless statements about our constitutional order."

APC vs PDP: President Buhari Campaign States Position On Atiku, Obi’s Performance At Town Hall Meeting

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:33 PM PST

Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has stated that presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi performed woefully at a town hall meeting tagged ''The Candidates."

The televised interview session was organised by the MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA and DARIA media in Abuja.

In a statement on Thursday, Festus Keyamo, Director, Strategic Communications of the Buhari campaign, said Atiku, "defined corruption as the use of your privileged position to either enrich yourself or enrich your relatives or even your friends".

When this is juxtaposed with his earlier statement in Lagos, that he will enrich his friends if he becomes President, we can safely conclude that he will be fully in the business of corruption if he becomes President, Daily Post reports.

"Secondly, Atiku/Obi made it clear to Nigerians that conflict of interests as a public servant should be the norm as, during their tenures, they found absolutely nothing wrong then and today, with investing public funds in enterprises they own or their families own. For instance, Kadaria ran Peter Obi into a ditch when she asked him if his family was not enriched as a result of using public funds for his family business 'NEXT'.

"Thirdly, their claim on experience in running anything public or private cannot stand any act of scrutiny. The presidential candidate, who is easily a major contributor to our huge unemployment problem today as a result of his corrupt privatisation programme, counts this failure as a huge experience and wants to repeat same if elected.

"Finally, their proposed Agriculture Programme which they claim to have put together to lift majority of the people out of poverty is a version of what is already being implemented by the present government under the Anchors Borrowers Programme and the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programmes.

"After watching Atiku/Obi on that programme, it has become clear to all Nigerians that our public institutions and commonwealth would be in grave danger if left in the hands of these dodgy and questionable characters who have no morals and no scruples about using and misusing public funds for private gains."

JUST IN: Jimi Agbaje’s Convoy Attacked By Hoodlums In Lagos

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:38 AM PST

Mr Jimi Agbaje

Hoodlums on Thursday attacked the campaign convoy of the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr Jimi Agbaje at Iba in Ojo West of Lagos.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) political correspondent reports that the convoy had just left the palace of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, when it came under ferocious attack.

The PDP governorship hopeful had gone to the monarch to inform him of his plan to hold his campaign rally in the area later in the day before the incident.

As the convoy was driving out, hoodlums, numbering about 40, chased and threw stones at Agbaje's vehicles.

Some of the hoodlums, clutching daggers and machetes, rode on motorcycles to keep pace with the speed of the convoy, throwing pebbles continually at the convoy.

The rear windscreen of a bus conveying some party members was shattered.

Some occupants of the bus sustained minor injuries caused by the shattered glass.

The hoodlums continued to advance towards the convoy for further attacks, before security details in the convoy engaged them, firing teargas at them.

They later beat a hurried retreat when the convoy managed to escape.

However, Agbaje and people in other vehicles did not sustain injuries.

Google+ Says Goodbye To Consuers On April 2

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:11 AM PST

Google+
Google has announced that it will be shutting down Google+ for consumers on April 2.

It comes as no surprise that the service is shutting down considering that Google confirmed its plans a while ago. Only now there is a set date to prep for.
April 2nd will see the deletion of Google+ pages, photos, videos, and everything else on the site. The service as you know it will cease to exist, so downloading anything you wouldn't want to lose is critical. There is are detailed download instructions to make the process less painful.

Developers need to take note that in addition to the general consumer shutdown, all Google+ APIs will be shutting down on the 7th of March. This includes Google+ Sign-in and requests for Google+ OAuth scopes. Google+ integrations for web or mobile apps are also being shut down. The most commonly used APIs affected by the shutdown are:

Google+ REST API
Google+ Web API
Google+ Android SDK
Google+ Domains API
Google+ Pages API
Google+ accounts for businesses are fine though. Accounts will remain active for those who use Google+ as part of G Suite. This goes for educational institutions, businesses that pay for G Suite, and any other organisations that make use of these enterprise-grade features. If you're unsure about your G Suite status, simply check to see if you apply.

Why Cloud Is A Critial Enabler For Enterprise IT Delivery

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:24 AM PST

IOT Cloud
Cloud adoption in key African markets has grown phenomenally over the past few years.

Organisations that want to remain relevant and interact economically will have to look at cloud computing in order to ensure interoperability, cost efficiency and high-end data security.
With many African organisations shifting from an on-premise environment, migrating to the cloud is more efficient than before.

According to Gartner, by 2020, 90 percent of organisations will adopt hybrid infrastructure management capabilities. Kevin Krige, Head of Datacentre and Cloud Service at BT in Africa shares some insights on managed services across hybrid clouds.

Krige says investing in hybrid clouds as a managed service provides the end-to-end visibility of the IT infrastructure, as well as the ability to configure optimal solutions for a business's different lines of business or geographies – from IP address management to disaster recovery to cost optimisation. He says this ensures that the business can have the right network, security and operational processes in place to more efficiently manage its cloud solutions.

Why do organisations need to consider a managed service for hybrid clouds?

Cloud computing has been a top focus and trend for any business on a journey of digital transformation for some time now. In fact, today, the cloud is viewed as a critical enabler for enterprise IT delivery. And the hybrid cloud is gaining popularity due to the fact that it offers businesses the flexibility, scalability and on-demand access to extra storage and computes resources of the public cloud, without sacrificing security, predictability and performance of local infrastructure.

However, it can become quite complex for a business to effectively manage multi-cloud environments. In order to deliver true multi-cloud benefits, the business needs new processes and people in place with the skills and experience across network, data centres and security. This talent is often difficult to find, not to mention retain.

What are the benefits of moving to the cloud?

Switching legacy systems for cloud collaboration is essential for keeping the workforce productive, operational costs at a minimum and the organisation successful in the digital age of today. However, there is no single cloud deployment model that is ideal for all business needs. Most companies are beginning to utilise a range of different public cloud services while simultaneously building private cloud infrastructures.

A hybrid cloud architecture, however, does provide a number of benefits for business and allows for easy integration of distinct cloud infrastructures and services – making it a catalogue of cloud services offering the business the opportunity to select the right cloud service delivery model for each application. It provides:

Elasticity where a business needs it, either by relying on public cloud services for specific needs or by rapid scaling and rebalancing between different cloud infrastructures
Robustness for mission-critical applications such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications
Self-service to improve time to market and reduce service operations costs
Economies of scale by relying on standard technologies, and
It is an enabler for new business models that rely on ecosystems which go beyond the corporate boundaries
It must be noted that the perfect cloud environment is one that allows easy and secure consumption of internal services and external solutions.

What does hybrid cloud adoption look like in Africa?

Despite the reality of many African companies still using legacy infrastructure such as on-premise data centres, the demand in the African market for cloud services continues to grow, given the scalability and cost benefits when moving to the cloud. Some businesses are looking for a single cloud solution that offers them centralised management – while others are driven to hybrid and/or public cloud-based solutions. We believe that this highlights that businesses are recognising the value of cloud services while also feeling the pressure to embrace the cloud as current infrastructure is struggling to support the adoption of digital technologies required to remain relevant and viable in the current market.

Hybrid cloud adoption is gaining traction in this regard, based on the following:

Provides best of both worlds
Companies are looking to leverage the direct benefits of both a private and public cloud environment. In a hybrid cloud, companies can still leverage third-party cloud providers in either a full or partial manner. This increases the flexibility of computing. The hybrid cloud environment is also capable of providing on-demand, externally-provisioned scalability.

Maximise performance
Today's businesses are looking to be more flexible as the culture of the mobile office becomes more prevalent. There is a rising need to use the cloud to access systems, apps, and data remotely. However, high-performance business apps and developments, such as big data and artificial intelligence, need increasingly more data and computing capability. As such, a hybrid approach to multi-cloud and private environments is becoming an organisational must.

What regulatory and practical issues should businesses who wish to leverage the cloud in Africa consider?

Any business that is dealing with data and using the cloud to store and manage data must take into consideration the regulatory environment and stipulations in this regard. In South Africa, this includes the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act. Businesses need to have an understanding of the parameters that exist due to regulatory requirements and ensure that any cloud adoption or infrastructure matches these requirements and aligns to the need for data protection and management.

Additionally, with cybercrime incidents increasing and becoming more complex, companies in Africa need to ensure that they are partnered with the right cloud partners who not only have an African footprint and understand the socio-economic complexities that exist, but that offer the right mix of security in the cloud to ensure regulatory requirement can be achieved.

What are some of the challenges of migrating to the cloud?

I believe that a key challenge in this regard is linked to when organisations lack a 'business-first' cloud adoption strategy and focus on cloud solely as an IT matter.

The cloud is aimed at providing business agility without the weight of infrastructure responsibility. Business decision makers should, therefore, turn their attention to developing and implementing a centralised cloud strategy and use it as the foundation for governing the use of cloud services across the business and IT organisation. While any cloud strategy should first be informed by business strategy, the IT operations team should also have an active voice in formulating it, given that a cloud strategy done poorly will increase complexity – which will directly increase costs.

The rise of Podcasts in Nigeria- Goldrush

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:09 AM PST

Podcasts barely existed four years ago in Nigeria, now there are a bunch of them. What has led to  of this phenomenon?

The podcast goldrush in Nigeria
Towards the first decade of the millennium, Nigerians could access the internet in dingy cyber cafes (there was nothing cafe about them) for N100 per hour.

Access to the cyber space would welcome the blogging era in Nigeria. Blogs such as Linda Ikeji and Bella Naija will start off as small and personal blogs hosted on blogspot and would later morph into multi million Naira companies in less than a decade.

During this period, thousands of young Nigerians would open up blogs to express their ideas, minds and thoughts from politics, sex, fashion, relationship and love to pop culture.

Right now we are witnessing a renaissance of sorts as young Nigerians are freely expressing themselves on the Internet. Unlike a decade ago, they are expressing themselves by recording their perspective about life and encoding it in mp3 or mp4 files, instead of typing on a keyboard.

Welcome to the podcast era. The word 'podcast' is synonymous with Apple, as the tech company integrated the feature and name into their iTunes service way before it became mainstream.

However, the name podcast predates Apple's early bet on the medium with traces to the name existing as far back as 2004.

Even though it has been around for a while, podcasts became really mainstream and influential to global pop culture circa 2015. Now, everybody and their mother has a podcast - Nigerians haven't been caught lacking either.

While we might have had certain bubbling under podcasts before, the major Nigerian podcast that garnered a cult following across the continent and beyond is Loose Talk Podcast hosted by journalists, Osagie Alonge, Ayomide Tayo and Steve Dede.

Their first episode was posted in February 2016, and since then, they have produced over 150 episodes of the podcast that has not only changed the pop culture scape, but has inspired a whole raft of individuals to equally create something and add their voice to contemporary conversations.

Since then, Nigeria now boasts of other podcasts like Submarine and a Roach circa 2017, I Said What I Said which started in 2017, The RantCasts, which started in 2017, Nigerian-American by Nigerian Hip-Hop legend eLDee the Don which started in 2017, The Powder Room which started in 20017, and a few others that have gained any semblance of a following.

Most recently Stephanie Coker and Dr Sid have launched new podcasts.
A few of those ideas have worked, but on the stead Loose Talk Podcast stands on, it's near peerless for influence and impact.

What gave birth to the rise of podcasts

The limiting nature of Nigerian radio and the need to expand discussions and incorporate alternative and sub-culture views from millennials contributed to the rise of podcasts.

Also, the Nigerian media hasn't been the best curator of Nigerian pop culture. Young Nigerians had to find a safe space to talk about things without the hindrances of PR and censor rules.

Feyi Akin-Bankole, co-host of F&S Uncensored (Which started in November, 2018) alongside Simi Badiru tells Pulse that, "I felt like I had a lot to say about the music and pop culture in Nigeria and a podcast seemed to be the most ideal platform."

Ayomide Tayo, co-host of Loose Talk Podcast says, "We started the podcast because we used to have mad bants in the office about the latest happenings in Nigeria and our colleagues loved it.

"More importantly, we realized that there was no one was curating or documenting Nigerian pop culture for our generation. In the next 5-10 years, this era would be gone. It would have been a tragedy that this era was not properly documented."

In a lot of ways, episodes like "El Jefe Gustavo" - where a drug dealer was interviewed - and "The Millennial Guide To Living Your Best Life while living in Your Parent's" Home from I Said What I Said, starting conversations on the parental attitude to their grown children, mental issues and the other side of marijuana as an ongoing conversation.

Every other day, the unique podcast The Rantcasts episodes passionately discuss LGBT issues, giving those who can relate a sense of belonging. But the podcast watershed moment in Nigeria was "The Greatest Podcast You Ever Did In Your Life" featuring M.I. Abaga and Loose Kaynon that came off an article written by Ayomide Tayo.

Nigerian pop culture stood still for three days straight.

Who are the listeners?

Simi Badiru, co-host of F&S Uncensored alongside Feyi Akin-Bankole states that, "As far as interaction goes, most of our listeners are late teens - 27 (so quite a young audience)."

On the other hand, I Said What I Said Podcast, hosted by Jola Ayeye and Feyikemi Abudu is one of Nigeria's biggest podcasts. From the available stats on its Soundcloud page, it has an average of about 3,000 listeners per episode from 19 episodes so far.

Ayeye says, "Our average listener is a young African (real young not political young, so 18-34) up for a laugh. They're likely struggling with the perils of being a millennial in a country with leaders more invested in maintaining the status quo than looking ahead. They're also butting heads against family expectations and societal pressure. So yeah…"

The Loose Talk Podcast episode featuring Nigerian Legend, Blackface has garnered about 30,000 views on YouTube.

The limits of Nigerian podcasts

A lot of the podcasters are from the elite sub-culture of Twitter conversations and their discussions are largely geared towards that space, and what stirs that space and it has worked well e.g Loose Talk and I Said What I Said.

For a podcast to truly thrive in Nigeria - just like Hip-Hop required Nigeria-friendly sounds and lingo to thrive - it needs to speak the language that appeals to most Nigerians - not necessarily how they want to hear those things discussed either.

While we might want podcasts to be endearing to Nigerians, the entire idea of podcasting in Nigeria is to represent a paradigm shift from the very backward nigh conservative style of radio in Nigeria.

We might not need a regurgitation of radio, but the subjects discussed must be alluring enough to appeal to 70% of the ecosystem that podcast is geared towards. Thus, the style of Nigerian podcasts must change.

Yes, discussions on music, entertainment, sexual liberalism, gender equality and LGBTQ or even 'adulting' resonates with most Nigerians, the way most Nigerian podcasts discuss them is simply not geared towards the 25-year-old Kasali in Akure, Ondo State who is also a University Graduate and spends his social media time of Facebook.

Talking IJGB lingo to him, about your journey from Wimbledon to Liverpool simply won't cut it for him.

Nigerian Lawyer an avid listener of Nigerian podcasts Kwame-Okpu Aghogho agrees, "In Nigeria especially the focus is on pop culture and there's obviously an over saturation. We need pods on Sex Education, Parenting, Leadership, Life Hacks and Mental Models, Entrepreneurship, Globalization, maybe even a serialized podcast of a play."

Ayomide Tayo agrees, "I'm listening to a podcast currently, it's a breakdown of the Monica Lewinsky case, but in Nigeria, we all make podcasts about pop culture or middle-class millennial stories. Why can't someone make a podcast about Madam Koi Koi or infamous Nigerian criminals?"

Facts be facts - there's a problem. But just as it was about to close up, Tayo further stated that, "In the same vein, the major market of people aware about podcasts might just be streamlined to that Twitter sub-culture at this time. We won't, however, know the true potential of Nigerian podcasts till someone makes a L'abe orun or N'kan be version - podcast version."

Akin-Bankole thinks, "People should (with podcasts) cover politics, mentoring (e.g. a podcast that encourages and motivates young people), life as an adult (we aren't taught what the world is like after education) and other social and environmental issues (e.g. feminism and global warming)."

That said, while nobody should ever hold anybody's voice back, we won't all be on-air personalities and it's crazy how practically every millennial Nigerian has a podcast dream at this point. It's so bad that a lot of them try to recreate the successful podcasts in small doses and to less than structured outcomes.

Like that isn't crazy, Nigerian celebrities are also moving into the podcast space, feeding us content.

Others simply take a more scatterbrained approach to things, rambling on microphones without scripted directions for the better part of 30 minutes. At the end of the day, they end up having little to no listeners, not necessarily because their podcast is bad – though some are, but because there is simply a very niche podcast listenership culture in Nigeria – and even across the world.

The idea is that the market is saturated with more product than an available market of willing followership. To go with that, some of the products aren't review-worthy.

Monetization

Nigerian podcasters struggle to monetize their podcasts. As co-host of Loose Talk Podcast, Ayomide Tayo puts it, "Podcasts in Nigeria are still a subculture, and not mainstream culture - which is still largely controlled by radio. Like it or not, asides the fact that advertisers do not fully understand podcasts yet, it's a numbers game and obviously, radio still has the numbers."

In truth though, we will get there. Not so long ago, advertising with social media influencers were anathema, until some brands decided to take advantage of social media and reaped handsome rewards from vertical engagements that social media influencers helped them garner. So, it might take time, but some podcasts will end up securing the bag.

Aghogho says, "Difficult to quantify, the possibilities are endless really, there's as much room for improvement and good podcasts as there is for regression and terrible podcasts."

Just like a lot of Nigerians don't trust e-commerce and products they sell; there are not enough jobs to go round in Nigeria, thus most job sites will fail. In the same vein, listening to podcasts requires time, solid internet service and large amounts of data.

Data might have proven that Nigeria is one of the most mobilized countries in the world with the average phone owner burning at least 25 MB worth of data per day, as stated by Jason Njoku of IrokoTV in 2016, there's still a preference on what Nigerians want to burn data on.

They would rather burn on Facebook videos or even YouTube skits than blow data on podcasts when they could listen to radio. Asides that, Nigerian internet services in places asides Lagos and Abuja is about as reliable as sensational Tweets from Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.

Eventually podcasts will be successful in Nigeria, but that looks a long time off. Thus, it will require some people – not just the few mainstream successes – to actually keep the fire burning. Inevitably too, a lot of these people will get tired and quit, but some will keep at it just like blogging a few years ago.

On the other part, most people are only encouraged to keep doing things when there's a decent response and a burgeoning following. That said, a lot of people are purely driven by passion and will naturally evolve at these creative endeavours till they master the art and science of them.

So, have podcasts lost their value?

The short answer is optimistically, no! We are only going through a pre-developmental phase and like anything in that phase, there is a rush that will soon die out. In equal vein, some kings will be made in that phase and in the phases to follow.

While speaking to Pulse on the future of Nigerian podcasting, host of U&I podcast, Mifa Adejumo says, "It's future is bright for podcast in Nigeria but unless the socio-economic climate changes soon enough, it might become darkened from a potential over-crowdedness of podcaster.

"Like I had also mentioned in one of the previous questions, podcasting now seems like a fashionable job title. If things in the country continue to go awry, it would likely move from fashionable to just "the next best thing" for anyone who is unemployed and has too much time on their hands."

As Ayomide Tayo puts it, "I will be lying if I said I knew. It's pretty much new in Nigeria and it is one day at a time. Maybe that is what makes it exciting, the possibility that it can be here today and gone tomorrow."

Nigerian pop culture writer Chiagoziem Onyekwena says, "This is a tough one. The audience is there, the audience is waiting. But they've grown accustomed to listening to foreign podcasts, so they're sophisticated and know what to expect."

Ayeye of I Said What I Said disagrees that, "No, not necessarily. The space is still pretty new so other interests will come up. It's just a matter of time. And the podcast space is completely democratized so no one needs permission to start one. Of course they will but it's a matter it time. And it's not guaranteed - It's patience, time and consistency."

But then, what about the market that requires no sophistication? The market that just wants good content to consumer?

No one knows, but the initial results and the economic state of Nigeria is instructive.

That said, podcasts have not lost their value in Nigeria or anywhere else, for that matter. The only way podcasting grows to a level big enough to challenge radio is by producing sufficient enough derivatives to build that niche.

Onyekwena, however, has a unique perspective, "In order for Nigerian podcasts to match the quality and consistency that this type of audience is used to, that podcast will need resources. Unfortunately, at this stage of the game, it's only podcasts backed by media houses that have those resources. These are the kinds of podcasts, that, in my opinion, have a long-term future."

On the one part, we can say the podcast space in Nigeria is saturated, but that's because it is new and people need to talk. But on the other hand - as note earlier, this is needed for the evolution of podcasting in Nigeria.

Nobody knows what the future of podcasting in Nigeria holds, but for the most part, one can be optimistic as those who fall off will be doing that at will.

2019 Election: Jubilation In Zamfara As INEC Removes APC From Ballot

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:19 AM PST

APC

There were serious jubilation within the opposition parties in Zamfara state as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday disqualified all the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state from contesting the 2019 general elections in the state.

According to the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the official release from the commission which excluded the state wing of APC from contesting the elections was a very transparent development.

According to him, INEC has proved to Nigerians that the 2019 general elections would be free, fair, credible and acceptable.

According to him, INEC has obeyed the judiciary, noting that the Federal High court's judgement supersedes a state High court, appealing to the commission to ensure that Justice prevails in the 2019 general elections.

In another reaction, the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi noted that he was waiting for APC in the state to flag off its campaign before going to the appeal court, noting that the INEC has done what was expected of the commission to do.

The presidential candidate of Nigerian Elements Progressive Party (NEPP) Comrade Ishaka Paul Ofemile said he appreciated the decision of INEC.

He noted that Nigeria is so big for anybody to use federal might or power of incumbency to manipulate the decision of over one hundred and fifty million citizens.

On his own part, Senator Garba Kabiru Marafa representing Zamfara central senatorial zone in the Senate pointed out that Governor Abdulaziz Yari wanted to prove to the world that he was the alpha and omega in the State.

The senator noted that Abdulaziz Yari came to the political limelight from nowhere through the political influence of senator Ahmad Sani Yarima.

Senator Marafa noted that even though he was not going to contest the governorship election, he was satisfied that Governor Abdulaziz Yari did not achieve his selfish interest after all.

Meanwhile, all the APC candidates and their supporters have remained silent, waiting for the Governor to enter the state Government House and make a public statement.

It could be recalled that the faction of the governor within the party had conducted the party primary elections in the state which the G8 group, the national headquarters of APC and INEC rejected.

The rejection of the primaries forced the camp of the governor to proceed to court against both the national headquarters of the party and INEC, praying the court to uphold the primaries.

However, the state court 3 sitting in Gusau, the state capital upheld the primaries while the Federal High Court Abuja declared the elections non-acceptable, thereby, upholding the decision of the INEC not to allow the APC candidates in the state to contest the general elections.

It was not yet known what would be the next line of action by the state chapter of the party even though our correspondent gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari is now set for his presidential campaign in the state.

Bolanle Olakunni shares her near death experience after a ghastly car accident.

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:46 AM PST

TV girl, Bolanle Olukanni survives ghastly car accident
Bolanle Olakunni has gotten everything to be thankful for as she survives a ghastly car accident.

The media personality revealed how she escaped death narrowly a few weeks ago while on a road trip. Bolanle shared a post via her Instagram page on Thursday, January 31, 2019, revealed in details how she came out unhurt from the ruined car.

"Upper Sunday I was in a life-threatening accident with six other people. I came out without a single scratch. Not one part of my body was affected, no injuries, no minor scratches or cuts. I came out like nothing happened. I can't explain what it means to me to be sitting here completely whole and healthy after that accident. A few things I can guarantee is that God is a miracle worker. As the car somersaulted I remember thinking to myself how is this happening to me, why is this happening BUT I also remember feeling like I was being carried, as not one part of my body felt the effects of the car tumbling.

"As I pulled myself out of the car after it came to a stop from the somersaulting. I stood on the highway in complete shock asking how did I survive it. The most interesting thing is moments before the accident I felt the spirit within me say you will give testimony in two weeks. I didn't understand. Moments later the accident happened. I am giving my testimony in church this Sunday 💥💥💥💥 ( it will be two weeks exactly to the accident) I am eternally thankful to God for what he did for me and the six other people in the car. I can't explain the level of this miracle. There were Trailers on the road all around us, not one of them hit us as we swerved from left to right on the road. There was no other accident on account of us. I am thankful because Gods mercy said NO to what could have happened to all 7 of us in the car.

"When I was a child my mummy used to make me read Pslam 121 almost every day. The other day, it popped into my mind and I went to read It. I got chills as I realized this prayer and confession that I had said almost everyday for years was the truth in my life. "He who keeps watch over you, neither sleeps nor slumbers. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore ." 2019 is the year of miracles. I pray God will continue to keep us and watch us. #Thankful," she wrote.

Well just as the story goes, thankfully she got out of it unhurt without and injuries. Bolanle has got be a lucky girl though from the look of the remains of that car.

Lagosians will vote for govt of continuity, says lawmaker

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:09 AM PST

APC Members
Tunde Braimoh, lawyer and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is seeking re-election. He spoke with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU on his plans for Kosofe Constituency 11, issues that will shape the governorship poll and why Lagosians will retain the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in power.

Why are you seeking for a second term in the Lagos State House of Assembly?

I am seeking for a fresh term because the legislative job is not like the executive. The constitution allows as many terms as possible. The constitution does not limit the number of times a person can be elected as a legislator. It is something like wine that gets better with age. It is knowledge base. You have to acquaint yourself with. Lawmaking is like law practice. You don't train for law making in Nigeria; you train on the job. I study law in my university and the law school and I had to learn in a chamber as a pupil lawyer before I became a principal counsel on my own. But, you acquire knowledge and experience as a legislator and you have to use them for the benefit of your constituency.

So, I am seeking election because I have experience to offer. I am preconscious. Without being immodest, I have been a lawyer. I have served as an executive chairman of local government. I know about the procedures of law making and governance. I know the rules. There is a message and there is a messenger. Just like the court room, the parliament has a procedure. It is a hallowed chamber and it is highly procedural. I know the procedures very well, having participated at the local government and the House of Assembly. It will do my constituency a lot of good, if I employ the knowledge and experience for the benefit of the constituency. The longer a legislator stays in office, the better fir the constituency and the House. It is not that somebody should be there permanently. Even, in America, legislators stay for a long time in parliament. During our trip, we met the Clerk of a parliament of the State of Georgia. He said he was born in 1963 and there is a legislator who was elected in 1961. He has been there before he was born and the legislator is still there. Nigeria has not advanced to that level. But, we have had legislators who have done fifth term, fourth term consecutively. They earn respect, even if they do not occupy any position in the House. They are bastion of experience and knowledge. Most of the time, the parliamentary offices are reserved for ranking members. The more experienced, the move versatile legislators are for the benefit of constituency. It will be a great disservice to my constituency if I do one term and run away. I am not standing on the pedestal of experience, pedestal of encounter and pedestal of familiarity with the tenets and procedures of the parliament.

In the last four years, what are your major achievements as a member of the House of Assembly, in terms of contributions on the floor, sponsoring of motions, resolutions and bills?

We have to be careful. We have to be modest. It is not possible for somebody to say that he, singularly, sponsored motions, or passed bills. That will be very realistic. That will be against the spirit if democracy with which we work in the House of Assembly. You can introduce a bill or sponsor a motion. But, yiu need lobbying to convince others. You may have your say, majority will have their way. If your message is good and you as a messenger you don't know how to push it, there will be problem. I have contributed very well and my colleagues can bear witness. But, I won't like to arrogate to myself some things. As the Chairman of House Committee on Media and Security, many motions on the security of Lagos were passed. The governor acted upon them. So many reforms on the judiciary of Lagos were carried out and still on-going. I have done things jointly with my colleagues, particularly the Speaker, who has given me the opportunity to serve. He is a factor in the House and an experienced legislator. He has impacted on me. When we were working on the Neighbourhood Watch Bill, it was initiated by him actually. But, I had to drive it as Chairman of the Security Committee. I worked with him personally and officially. I contribute to every debate and in a positive light.

I always articulate the problems of my constituency in the House and other issues that concern my constituency; security, welfare. There was an accident waiting to happy, a bridge was about to collapse in Isheri. Once I get an information about any issue, I act on it.

What are your second term campaign promises?

My campaign promise is to further entrench the principles of democracy whereby a leader should be a servant. A public office is a public trust. Nobody is good enough to lead another person without the consent of the person. I believe in servant-leadership, especially when you are a legislator. The five broad functions of the legislature are represented, legislate, make laws, do appropriation; to allocate resources, and do oversight on the executive functions. Representation is first; it comes before legislation. Before you legislate, you must represent. The issues of safety and security of the constituency are very important. All the things that affect the security, welfare and abundance of life of the people of Kosofe Constituency 11 are paramount to me. It is not all issues that are treated at the plenary. Others are tackled at the inter-ministerial level and inter-governmental arms relations. I can go to whatever office to get solutions to the problems of my people. Even, those under executive functions, I go there to get solutions. I write letters, I make contacts, I visit. That is why I am elected. So, the work is not about grandstanding or to answer chief, honourable, doctor, alhaji, otunba. It is very easy to adopt titles. But, what is important is how you are able to discharge the functions of your office. When you receive calls, an average of five persons are asking for money. You won't say you won't respond. You give the ones you can give. That is one of the peculiarities and idiosyncrasies of our society. They believe that legislators are loaded and should be able to support. Of course, you do what you can do within the limit of your ability. You have to show sympathy and care. If you go to MDAs and you see opportunities for your people, you take the advantages. What you cannot do, let the people understand that you cannot do it. If an area is been vilified or under the scourge of violence or armed robbery, you raise an alarm. If a community is being cut off from facilities, you intervene.

If I am re-elected, it will give me a leverage. By getting more entrenched, no contact is lost; no knowledge is wasted. All these will be used to the advantage of the people of Kosofe. My people know that I have the ability and the zeal to serve. I will not let them down. I will continue to be their servant, not their master. I am not a boss. I am deputy to them. I will do more. I will do better. Their wants, aspirations, yearnings and challenges will be my preoccupation in the House.

What is the level of confidence you have; that you will be able to beat your PDP rival at the poll?

I am a modest person. I don't underrate anybody. A contest is a contest. It is easier for people to vote against you than to vote for you. It is very easy to vote against you. They don't need any conviction. They don't want to hear anything from you. It is can be anybody, except you. But, for them to vote for you, you need to convince people in democracy. You need to warm your way into the hearts of the people. I fear a situation where people will vote against me. When people don't vote against you, when they vote for you, you are lucky.
If you want to talk about experience, stability, I don't want to start comparing myself with people. It will be immodest, unfair. I just want to talk about issues that are involved. I have told you what I want to do for my people. People can interrogate those who are contesting against me. I have done debate before. Pentecostal pastors organised one before and they were able to make up their minds. I have the experience. I have been local government chairman in 1999. I have been in politics for a while. I am not struggling to build a house now. I am not struggling to own a car. I am not struggling to fix myself. But, if may sound immodest. If you want to be a big man, you can be a big man in your house. If you want to serve people, you can't know more than the people you are serving. You cannot be bigger than the people you are serving.  I am just happy serving the people. I am not unemployed at all. It is my choice to be in public life. I wanted to quit before. But, we can't turn our back to public life. Even, as a lawyer, I used to be in the midst of people. I like assisting people. I will not like to compare myself to other candidates. If they are not qualified, they would not have come out. It is the beauty of democracy. There is a need for opposition in a democracy. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Contest makes you prepare well. I commend those people who have the temerity, the courage to contest. Opposition is a veritable tool on democracy. If there is no opposition, there will be no democracy. I tried to reach out to the electorate. I have my own style. By the grace of God, I will be elected to serve. We are just building democracy. The military has been in power fir long; between 1966 and 1979, 1984 and 1990, quasi-military, quasi-democracy between 1990 and 1993, between 1993 and 1999. This is the longest time we are having democracy. It was rough in 1999. Now, the electorate are more politically conscious. They know what they want. Power belongs to the people.

What are the issues that will shape the next governorship election in Lagos State?

It is not about sentiments. Without being immodest, with all sense of objectivity, the governments of AD, AC, ACN, and APC have performed wonders in Lagos State. The account for the outstanding position of Lagos State in the comity of states. A vehicle breaks down. Before you know it, the Rapid Response Unit will tow it to your house, free of charge. A vehicle plunged into the river in my constituency here, at Owode Elede. Nobody died because of the response of the unit. They rescued all. They pulled out the vehicle and everybody survived. Government is truly functional in Lagos. Lagos has the highest VAT contribution to Abuja. Lagos has been progressively functioning since the days of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When the Federal Government left Lagos State for Abuja, Lagos was becoming comatose. Other states were overtaking Lagos. Lagos was lagging behind. When Asiwaju came in, he was able to revolutionalise the state. Asiwaju was able to initiate new things. Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode built on the achievements by the grace of God. Asiwaju is a hunter for talents. There are other leaders in the GAC. Look at the people Lagos State has 'exported' to Abuja. One is gratified that they are worthy representatives-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Babatunde Fashola and Fowler. Very exceptionally exemplary. It is ironical that many things are being done in the Southsouth and Southeast, which is not being appreciated.

I want to appeal to the good people of Lagos not to truncate the wheel of progress. We have not seen anything yet. We can't begin to experiment again. We have a road map. We have a charter. Nobody can rule Lagos and stat making unnecessary mistakes. There is a standard. Even, in the House of Assembly, there is a standard. You must be a competent person to be able to make a mark. It is just one of the manifestations of Lagos as a state. Let's be objective. Compare Lagos to other states. I want to appeal to our people to continue to give us the support to always make Lagos great.

Kashamu is our adopted son, say Yewa monarchs

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:54 AM PST

Buruji Kashamu
Traditional rulers in Yewa have said the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Senator Buruji Kashamu, is "an adopted son of Yewa land".

They spoke yesterday when Kashamu visited the Yewa Traditional Rulers-in-Council in Ilaro.

The Eselu of Oja Odan, Oba Ebenezer Akinyemi, said Kashamu was an adopted son of the area, adding that he was entitled to the same rights and privileges as the sons and daughters of Yewa land.

The meeting was presided over by the paramount ruler of Yewaland and the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

Oba Akinyemi described Kashamu as "a born philanthropist" and listed the senator's humanitarian interventions as well as his activities in Ogun State, the Southwest and other parts of Nigeria.

The monarchs, including the Onimeko of Imeko, Oba Benjamin Oyeditan Olanite, prayed for Kashamu's success at the polls.

Kashamu said he was in Ilaro to seek the blessings and support of the monarchs for his aspiration.

The senator recalled his support for Yewa candidates who aspired to be governors of the state in the past.

He said: "Your Royal Majesty, although the two candidates from Ogun West Senatorial District are your sons, I dare say with all sense of humility that I am your son and loyal friend because as the English would say, 'a true friend sticks closer than a brother'. There is also a saying that 'One loyal friend is worth 10,000 relatives'.

"It is for this reason that we have come to seek your support since fate has brought us together."

Kashamu also reiterated his commitment to releasing all allocations due to local governments.

"I will not deduct from their allocations. This is to ensure grassroots development.

"I also commit to remitting all statutory deductions from staff salaries to the relevant unions and authorities as and when due.
"Also, substantial funds shall be set aside to assist the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Loans from the funds shall attract no interest," he said

Those that accompanied Senator Kashamu on the visit include his running mate, Dr Reuben Abati, Ogun State PDP chairman, Chief Adebayo Dayo, and Director General of the Kashamu/Abati Campaign Organisation, Chief Remi Bakare, among others.

‘Obiano remains APGA national leader’

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:48 AM PST

Willie Obiano
The Anambra State government has debunked reports that Governor Willie Obiano has left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, said Obiano remains the party's National Leader and Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT).

The statement reads: "Various political forces have devised all kinds of methods to obtain Governor Willie Obiano's support to enhance their chances in the general election. Some have gone as far as claiming that Obiano has defected to their parties.

"Investigations have revealed that those spreading this rumour are agents of two of the three leading political parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC). But the government hereby states that the reports are false; Governor Obiano remains both APGA's National Leader and Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT).
"He has been campaigning for APGA's candidates, including Gen. John Gbor, the party's presidential candidate. He has been consistent in telling supporters to vote for only APGA candidates. He has never asked Anambra people to vote APGA candidates in some elections and candidates of other parties in another election.

"Obiano's policy of constructive engagement, as opposed to confrontation, in his relationship with people, groups and institutions, means that as much as there are differences in political perspectives, we must maintain a friendly disposition to all. He is satisfied with the trust which Ndi Anambra and APGA members repose in him, which has enabled him to render useful service to the people. He has no intention to leave APGA and join another party. He will continue to use APGA as a vehicle for tremendous mobilisation and service to God and humanity."

‘We’re working towards improving Ekiti’s economy’

Ekiti State Deputy Governor(Bisi Egbeyemi)
Ekiti State Deputy Governor Bisi Egbeyemi, who was sworn in alongside his boss, Governor Kayode Fayemi, on October 16, last year, believes the administration is on track. In this interview with reporters in his office, Egbeyemi speaks on the government's bid to deliver democracy dividends to the people through some key policies and other topical issues. RASAQ IBRAHIM was there.

How are you going to tackle revenue generation, human capacity and infrastructure?

Well, as far as revenue generation is concerned, we want to be different from the past. We want to make sure that every penny coming into the coffers of this government comes in through the Treasury Single Account (TSA). That is the latest innovation. They will pay directly to that account; every MDA and every arm of government generating money for us. Nobody takes cash anymore; they pay through the bank to the dedicated account. So, if we find anybody using his or her own booklet, the person is gone. So, we want everybody to be very careful, to make sure that whatever money he or she receives on behalf of the government are paid to the bank directly.

A number of Executive Orders have been signed since you assumed office in the past three months. How effective have they been?

There are lots of Executive Orders that have been signed; you have to be specific. There are orders on education, that teachers should not collect fee, teachers should not charge fee. I think I am personally involved in making sure that that order is obeyed. All the people in charge, especially officers of the Ministry of Education, even the teachers, the Tutor General, Mrs. (Oluwatoyin) Arogundade and the two others special principals are working hard to maintain that order, because some principals are in cahoots with their PTA. I have caught one or two, but we don't want to dismiss them. But henceforth anybody caught flouting the order of the government will leave the service. The moment we say education is free, it has to be free; they should not find any means of collecting money. I called a few of them to my office here. I told them, even some members of PTA followed them and I told them that I know their tricks. If we want to fence our schools, it is the government that will fence them, and not you collecting money from parents and spending the money and giving part of it to the principal who assists you in levying the charges and collecting the money. I had the experience when I was Commissioner for Education, whereby some principals and some PTA will be in agreement. They collect money, they will say, they want to use it for school something. The idea is good, but … there a lot of hanky-panky in it. They are the ones who will award the contract; only five people that are members of the PTA and all other parents that contributed are not likely to be there. They are not even there, whatever they say the spent on a particular item is what they would report. If they say they spent N500,000 in renovating a school, and whereas they might have spent N300,000 where is the remaining N200,000?  We don't want that, anymore. Even, some of the members of the PTA are jobless people.

They are members of the PTA in one school this year. In another two years, they will jump to another school. They will say they have children in every school. That aspect, we have collapsed that. Then as far as collection of fees or whatever revenue, the latest one is the collection of Ekiti State Transport Management Agency (EKSTMA). We have appointed a director, who is working round the clock. He came with a report to me of recent that in eight days, they have collected what the previous government collected in six months, because he was paying directly into the state account. He brought the list and the receipt with which the people they caught paid to banks directly and brought the receipt to them. Previously they were collecting cash from people. We don't know whether the money got to bank or not.

How are you resolving land and kingship disputes, which fall under your portfolio?

The most serious aspect is the chieftaincy; we have lots of petitions by Obas against the recent Oyewole Panel. Some said they were not upgraded like their mates who were on the same grade. In fact, some said those who were behind were promoted above them, leaving them behind. Some of them said somebody who was in C, while he was in B has been promoted to A and that he remains in B. They said it was done politically. Who are we to query that? Because we have not heard the other side, but we have read the White Paper, so we can't blame Justice Oyewole. These people were before him and he formed his opinion on what was brought before him.

We are all human beings. But we are going to do something very soon. I am not going to say it until my boss, the Governor, acts on our recommendations. We were asked to look into all the grievances and recommend accordingly. We can't just recommend that an Oba should be promoted. No! It will appear as if we want to favour a few. Well, they put those departments under me as a result of my experience. I was Chairman of Local Government Reform. I was a local government chairman before and I am a traditional title holder. They know that I know a little bit about chieftaincy and I have the experience to cope with the aspect of the ones given to me. We have met so many,

I don't want to mention Obas now. We have met so many chiefs that want to become Obas and we have also met so many Obas that want promotion, but I told them we are looking into it. There is a procedure. You must follow the normal procedure, so that we would not be blamed in future. On local government, we have people that were there before, but are on suspension. I mean elected chairmen. Some people were crying that we should dissolve the councils, but we rejected the idea. Since they are on suspension, we will look into their accounts. If they are there, they can disrupt and interfere with our investigation.

Recently, six schools were approved to be established, five in Ado and one in Ikere. Do you have plans to establish more, so that other parts of Ekiti would feel the impact?

It was during the election that I discovered that Ado has expanded rapidly. We are bringing schools closer to the people. We are only starting with Ado Ekiti, because of the population. The population in Ado is growing rapidly and we need to do something about it. Then, we are looking into other areas, like Ikere. We would tackle other areas later. We have just started. We are going to be here, by the grace of God, for four years; at least three years nine months from now. Before our tenure ends, we would have touched other local governments.

There have also been agitations for a new national minimum wage of N30,000 for workers. What is your take on that?
Whatever they want, if they say they want N60,000 per month, they deserve it. If they say want N25,000, they deserve it and if they say N30,000, they deserve it. But, the problem is, what is our income as a state? If they say we should pay the workers N40,000 per month, I will be in support, but how do we get the money? That is the problem; to be able to sustain it. If we start and start sending people away from government service, so as to be able to pay, it is a problem. We are planning and we hope that whatever comes out of it, will be to the pleasure of the workers and the government.

If the proposal goes through, is Ekiti State willing to pay?

What the Federal Government says we should pay, is what we are going to pay. But there should be a means of supporting us to enable us pay.

There was a trailer accident recently at Iworoko. It was caused partly because of the number shops around the streets. Is there any plan to relocate the market to a safer place?

One has to be very careful. Our people are too sensitive; they don't want to hear the truth. In Ado, at Iworoko, at Ilawe, at Iyin, at Igede, if you go to their markets, during market days, hardly would they allow vehicles to pass. People have been crying that nobody should trade on the road, but this one it was unfortunate. The market is close to the road, not that the people were on the road. I really pity the people at Iworoko. The women were in the market, but the driver lost control. The brake, according to them, failed. I have been there. Thank God that the EKSU students were on holiday at that material time, otherwise it would have been more fatal than that. Well, to your second question, the problem we were having is that our people don't want to go to markets built for them. During his first tenure, Dr. Kayode Fayemi built a big market along Ilawe Road, just like he did in all the local governments. The one at Ilawe Road now, nobody is there. There is another market along Agric Olope, which he built also, opposite Oba Adejugbe Hospital. It is also scantly occupied. Even at Iworoko, I was told that there is a market that is unoccupied by our people. The problem is that they like staying on the main road. Look at the Oja Oba in Ado here, before the new market was constructed, people would leave their stalls to come to the main road. Before the butcher store was removed, the butcher's will leave their store and come to the main road, where they will be met by the people first before entering the market. Look at Oja Bisi now, there is enough space, if they move and remain inside, nothing would happen to them, because the market was constructed according to the law, but our people will leave their stalls to come to roadside.

Don't you think that there is need to enforce the law for the people to stay inside?

The law is there, but if there is a law and you don't enforce it, people will think there is no law. What we are going to do is to enforce the law. But we will educate them that it is not good to trade on the roadside before clamping down on them. It is not safe for the buyer and the seller. Those who died now, buyers must be there, sellers must be there among the dead. So, I really pity our people in Iworoko. Though the market was by the roadside, but it was as a result of the faulty nature of that trailer; I saw it. I was there. We have also advised local governments not to build stores by the roadside. All markets by the road sides must be taken care of. There are some markets traditionally that should be where they are. Traditionally, in Yoruba land, markets are usually located around the Oba's palaces. The one at Iyin is not proper. The one at Igede too; you can hardly go through the market during market days. Same with Aramoko. In Aramoko, they have enough space not to come to the main road, but you will still see them on the main road.

What should Ekiti people expect from government this year?

Well, we have started getting the goodies from the government. We gave them free education; that is for the parents. We gave teachers money, car loans and housing loans. We have paid arrears of rural teachers allowance, Ekiti State is one of the first states that are paying rural allowance to teachers, then we are paying special allowance for taking special subjects like Physics, Mathematics, English and Science subjects. If you a teacher and you are teaching these subjects you get something special, so we are doing that. There is also going to be free medical service starting from Emure to Ise area. It will go round to other areas, and possibly end in Ado.

When is the School feeding programme going to start?

The school feeding is starting this month. The training for the food vendors will be on from next week, by the grace of God. I think they have done the interview. I think if it has not been completed, it should be completed this week. We want to train them, not anybody can prepare pupils' food, the hygienic part of it, how they will prepare and what they will prepare, so that they will not injure the pupils. And that is free. We are going to feed all the pupils in all the primary schools; primary one to three to start with. It is an opportunity for parents to take more children to school and even the pupils will enjoy staying in school. When they get to school, they will be looking forward to taking their lunch at noon. In those days, in the '50s, we were taking lunch at subsidized rate. We were eating in the schools in those days, those of us who were not privileged to be taking dodo and rice at home, took it in school. Some not taking beans at home also had the opportunity of having it in school. But, here like the timetable we are having in Osun, they will be given good food; they will be given eggs and chicken too. Not all of them have the opportunity to always have such opportunities in their various homes. It is going to give them better health. It is normal that it will encourage more enrolment. In the North, where it was practised, everybody was bringing his or her children to school. It will encourage more enrollments, and it will help us economically. The women that will be cooking for the children will benefit from it economically, including the farmers, market women and others that will benefit from it, like those selling pepper, those selling oil, those planting maize, cassava, yams and everything. So, it is going to help the state.

APC to Atiku/Obi: You told Nigerians bare faced lies

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:27 AM PST

Peter Obi and  Atiku Abubakar
The APC Presidential Campaign Council said on Thursday that the PDP Presidential, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi were engaged in what it described as bare face lies and dishonest claims when they appeared on a national television programme, "The Candidate" on Wednesday night.

Spokesman of the Campaign, Barrister Festus Keyamo said in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja that simple fact checks revealed that several claims by the PDP candidate and his running mate were nothing but a tissue of lies.

Keyamo said Nigerians should take note of "Alhaji Atiku Abubakar defined Corruption as "the use of your privileged position to either enrich yourself or enrich your relatives or even your friends", adding that "when this is juxtaposed with his earlier statement in Lagos, that he will enrich his friends if he becomes President, we can safely conclude that he will be fully in the business of corruption if he becomes President.

"Atiku/Obi made it clear to Nigerians that conflict of interests as a public servant should be the norm as, during their tenures, they found absolutely nothing wrong then and today, with investing public funds in enterprises they own or their families own. For instance, Kadaria ran Peter Obi into a ditch when she asked him if his family was not enriched as a result of using public funds for his family business 'NEXT'.

"Their claim on experience in running anything public or private cannot stand any act of scrutiny. The Presidential candidate, who is easily a major contributor to our huge unemployment problem today as a result of his corrupt privatisation programme, counts this failure as a huge experience and wants to repeat same if elected.

"Their proposed Agriculture Programme which they claim to have put together to lift majority of the people out of poverty is a version of what is already being implemented by the present government under the Anchors Borrowers Programme and the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programmes.

"After watching Atiku/Obi on that programme, it has become clear to all Nigerians that our public institutions and commonwealth would be in grave danger if left in the hands of these dodgy and questionable characters who have no morals and no scruples about using and misusing public funds for private gains."

Keyamo listed some of the lies he claimed were told by the PDP candidate and his running mate to include:

*Lie Number 1: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claimed that at handover in May 2019, our GDP growth rate was 6%. Fact Checked Truth: It is a well-documented fact that at handover, the GDP growth rate was 2.35%. The economy was on a free fall as the GDP growth rate had dropped for three consecutive quarters.

*Lie Number 2: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claims recession was caused by the APC Government. Fact Checked Truth: With a consistent and rapid drop of our GDP, their Coordinating Minister of the Economy at that time, Okonjo Iweala, former Central Bank Governor Prof. Charles Soludo and the Central Bank Governor at the time, now Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, warned the PDP Government and Nigerians that we were headed for a recession.

*Lie Number 3: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claimed that security challenges were restricted to the North East during their time. Truth: Nigerians will recall that the Boko Haram activities had spread all over the North East, North West and North Central. For instance, UN Headquarters, Police Headquarters, a Bus stop in Nyanya, a prominent Plaza in Wuse II were all bombed during the era of the last government in Abuja. A church or Mosque was bombed every week in 2013/2014. The herders-farmers' clashes were the deadliest in 2014, claiming over 1,300 lives in a short period across the North. Boko Haram occupied over 17 Local Government Areas and hoisted their flags, effectively establishing a caliphate in the North East. All these happened before the coming of this administration.

*Lie Number 4: Peter Obi claimed that out-of-school children grew to 13.5 million under this administration. Truth: The figure of 13.2 million out-of-school children was a 2015 survey by UNICEF. An alarm was raised by several global bodies then because the figure had grown from 10.5 million in 2010 to 13.2 million in 2015, despite record earnings of the Government at that time. In other words, Peter Obi's claim is self-indicting.

*Lie Number 5: That Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as a Customs officer, said there was nothing wrong at that time with setting up a company that had dealings in the Ports that were under customs supervision.
Truth: The Code of Conduct for Public Officers was first enshrined in the 1979 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar co-founded the company, as a serving customs officer, three years after the 1979 constitution came into operation. According to Section 1 of the 5th Schedule to the 1979 Constitution, a public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflicts with his duties and responsibilities. By establishing a company involved in Port-related business at a time when he was an officer in the Nigeria Customs Service charge with managing the Ports, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar definitely put himself in a position where his personal (business) interest conflicted with his duties as a public officer.

*Lie Number 6: Peter Obi claims Nigeria has record poverty now. Truth: Despite high oil revenue, according to the World Bank, extreme poverty under PDP grew to 112 million in 2013 through 2014, compared to 86 million today. India pulled their citizens out of poverty for over two decades by using the same methods Nigeria is now using today.

He said further that "In summary, one would have thought that in the course of the programme, 'The Candidates', Atiku/Obi would have modified the lies they told earlier in their campaigns and make it consistent with reality as most of them were already fact-checked by independent bodies and proven to be lies. Alas, they have continued on the same path, believing that 'If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed".
