Reasons Our Helicopter Carrying VP Osinbajo Crashed In Kogi — Caverton Group

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:41 PM PST

VP Osinbajo crashed chopper

Caverton Helicopter, an air charter service, on Saturday blamed hazy weather conditions for the helicopter crash involving Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

The Lagos-based firm said the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. in Kabba, Kogi State, confirming earlier account of Mr Osinbajo's office.

Josiah Choms, an executive at Caverton, said Mr Osinbajo was being conveyed in an Augusta AW139 chopper when it lost control as it was about to touch down.

Mr Osinbajo was on a campaign mission ahead of the presidential elections later this month.

The accident was due to "unusual weather conditions," Mr Choms said, adding that there were no injuries to the passengers or crew members as they were all quickly and safely evacuated.

"The relevant authorities have been duly informed and an investigation into the incident has commenced. We will, of course, support the authorities as required," the statement added.

Mr Osinbajo, who is the running mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the elections scheduled for February 16, has been inundated with congratulatory messages from Nigerians of different political affiliations.

Labour minister, 10 others on-board
Meanwhile, the vice-president's office has released additional details about the incident.

Laolu Akande, a presidential spokesperson, said 12 people including the minister of state for labour and productivity, Stephen Ocheni, senior presidential aides, security officials were on board the helicopter.

"We are grateful to God for His protection and safety, and we thank the crew and security personnel for their prompt response and service. We are also grateful for the tremendous expressions of concern and affection, as well as prayers from all.

"As is procedural, a full investigation into the causes of the incident would be conducted by aviation authorities," the spokesperson said.

He added that Mr Osinbajo had since continued his campaign. The vice-president himself stated this earlier in his first tweet posted shortly after the accident.

The crash comes three years after James Ocholi, a former minister of state labour and productivity, James Ocholi, was killed alongside his wife and son in a car accident along Kaduna Abuja Highway. The minister's driver was said to be driving without a valid licence.

Airtel Africa Receives $200 mln Investment From Qatar

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:25 AM PST

Airtel
Airtel Africa, a subsidiary of Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel which services 15 African countries, will receive an investment of USD 200 million from the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) through a primary equity issuance in the company.

The funds will primarily be used to reduce Airtel Africa's debt, which currently stands at approximately USD 3.7 bn, and in the process also strengthen Bharti Airtel's consolidated books.
Six global investors, including Warburg Pincus, Temasek, Singtel and SoftBank Group International, helped Airtel Africa raise USD 1.25 bn in November through a placement of shares. The telecommunications company aims to raise an additional USD 1.5 – 1.6 bn around June of 2019.

"We are excited to welcome Qatar Investment Authority as a long-term strategic equity partner. This transaction will not involve any sale of shares by existing shareholders," said Airtel Africa according to The Economic Times, India. "The QIA said it looks forward to supporting Airtel's vision in building a world-class business in the African continent.

Having faced severe pressure on revenue and profitability in India, Bharti Airtel is trying to trim its debts but also fund the expansion of its 4G network across the country.

2018 Saw A Drastic Drop In Smartphone Market-Report

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:17 AM PST

SmartPhone
2018 was "the worst year ever for smartphone shipments," according to the research firm IDC.

The survey further states that worldwide handset volumes declined 4.1 per cent in 2018 to a total of 1.4 billion units shipped for the full year.
IDC analyst Ryan Reith describes the market as a mess. "Globally the smartphone market is a mess right now. Outside of a handful of high-growth markets like India, Indonesia, (South) Korea and Vietnam, we did not see a lot of positive activity in 2018."

Reith said the market has been hit by consumers waiting longer to replace their phones, frustration around the high cost of premium devices, and political and economic uncertainty.

The Chinese market, which accounts for roughly 30 per cent of smartphone sales, was especially hard hit with a 10 per cent drop, according to IDC's survey, which was released Wednesday.

IDC said the top five smartphone makers have become stronger and now account for 69 per cent of worldwide sales, up from 63 per cent a year ago.

Samsung remained the number one handset maker with a 20.8 per cent share despite an eight per cent sales slump for the year, IDC said.

Apple managed to recapture the number two position with a 14.9 per cent market share, moving ahead of Huawei at 14.7 per cent, the survey found.

IDC said fourth-quarter smartphone sales fell 4.9 per cent — the fifth consecutive quarter of decline.
"The challenging holiday quarter closes out the worst year ever for smartphone shipments," IDC said in its report.
A separate report by Counterpoint Research showed similar findings, estimating a seven per cent drop in the fourth quarter and four per cent drop for the full year.

"The collective smartphone shipment growth of emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Russia and others was not enough to offset the decline in China," said Counterpoint associate director Tarun Pathak.

Survey Reveals Kenya's Customer Experience State In 2018

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:12 AM PST

Kenya Largest Telco
Kenya's second largest telco Airtel, Equity bank and pay TV service provider DSTV have emerged to be among major brands offering their customers remarkable services and satisfaction.

In a recent integrated customer experience company mSurvey has revealed the results for the year 2018 in their quarterly Customer Loyalty Benchmark Report.
The report which highlighted the state of customer experience in Kenya across 10 industries showed that delivery of customer experience remains inconsistent across all industries with the exception of the Energy and Health industries which maintained consistent performance throughout 2018.

The report further revealed a significant drop in customer experience delivery in the course of 2018 marked by a steady decrease in Net Promoter Scores (NPS) across 8 industries. The drop can be attributed to the growing constraint on consumer budgets, a factor which was heightened in quarter 4 due to inflated consumer spend over the December festive season which also created a state of heightened competition.

In quarter 4 KCB ranked the highest in customer experience in the Banking industry. KCB customers cited friendly rates and customer service as a key source of delight. Customer service remained the largest driver of customer experience in this industry. Co-operative bank customers reported incidences of poor treatment by customer-facing staff as their main source of a bad experience, this caused the bank to experience an overall drop in their NPS.

Under the Telco industry, Telkom Kenya emerged as leaders in 2018 closing with an average Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 22.5. Their success was largely owed to fast data and affordable data bundle offerings. One Telkom Kenya promoter said, "Consistent network and data speeds; also affordable rates." Safaricom followed closely with an NPS of 16.75 in 2018. According to subscribers, Safaricom excelled in overall customer service as well as efficiency and reliability. Airtel's customers cited poor connectivity in some areas as a bad experience which led to a drop in the company's NPS.

In the Retail industry, Tuskys continues to deliver a better experience to their customers compared to Naivas. Tusky's performance in quarter 4 was driven by speed, efficiency, having a wide variety of products as well as good customer service according to consumers. Consumers rewarded Naivas with good scores based on fair pricing and a better overall experience. However, speed and the level of efficiency continues to be a source of penalization from shoppers in quarter 4.

Government facilities experienced an overall drop in their performance, however, some organizations have notably beat the odds. Huduma Center which is tasked with customer experience delivery scored an NPS of 21 in quarter 4, exceeding the industry standard NPS of 13. 40% of Huduma Center's promoters mentioned the level of customer service and speed as areas of delight. These factors have continued to remain a significant source of detraction across other government facilities.

Customers control the success of a business. mSurvey Co-founder and Chief Product Officer Louis Majanja state, "We live in the age of the customer. Customer loyalty is crucial for any business to thrive in a competitive market. Delivering a superior customer experience is no longer something nice to have, it is a key competitive differentiator."

Over the years mSurvey has enabled businesses to understand the drivers of customer loyalty, enabling them to increase their operational efficiencies and enhance their competitive advantage through product innovation. With consistent use over time, leading brands have been able to strengthen their brand equity and grow their revenues.

Police watched as I was abducted: Abia APC chief Nwankpa

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:59 AM PST

Donatus Nwankpa
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia, Chief Donatus Nwankpa, freed by kidnappers after four days has made a sensational revelation about his ordeal: the indifference by Nigerian policemen who witnessed his kidnap.

Nwankpa who has returned home said the hoodlums, who kidnapped him, accosted his car about 30 metres away from a police checkpoint at the Arungwa Junction on Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway.

"The police were watching and did not intervene, while we were attacked by the hoodlums," he said.

Nwankpa was said to have been kidnapped while on his way to Aba from Umuahia around 11 pm on Monday, ahead of Tuesday's visit of President Muhammadu Buhari for his presidential rally.

He told newsmen in his residence in Umuahia on Friday, that he was released at about 9 pm on Thursday and taken to the border between Abia and Rivers states.

He said that after they were kidnapped, he pleaded with the gunmen to release one of his aides, who had a major operation recently and was still recuperating.

He said that they heeded his plea and dropped off the man but drove him away to a deep forest in Rivers.

Nwankpa said that it took the kidnappers about 48 hours before they could open up communication and agree to negotiate with his people.

He said that although the Department of State Services (DSS) was able to locate their location in the forest, he admonished them not to take any action.

"When you are kidnapped, you are between life and death. So I told the DSS that nobody should attack after they located the place I was kept," he said.

He said that his fear was that death could come from the kidnappers or during a gun battle between the hoodlums and security agents.

The APC chairman dismissed as "unfounded" the rumour that he was trailed by his abductors after he had withdrawn N50 million from the bank, describing it as "political blackmail."

He said that he had only N250,000 when he was attacked and blamed the incident on the state of insecurity in the state.

He expressed joy that he was not hurt by his abductors but could not disclose whether ransom was paid before he was let off the hook.

Scores of APC party chieftains in the state visited Nwankpa's residence on Friday to rejoice with him over his safe return.

NAN reports that the publication of final list of candidates for the state assembly election in Lagos State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reveals that some lawmakers' names were missing.

While some of these lawmakers lost out in their aspirations to return to the house, and others who wanted to represent their respective federal constituencies in the House of Representatives failed at primary elections.

The lawmakers who couldn't secure return tickets to the house during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, according to NAN findings are: Messrs Akeem Bello (Amuwo Odofin II) and Sola Giwa (Lagos Island)

Others are: Oladele Adekanye (Lagos Mainland I) and Dayo Famakinwa (Ajeromi-Ifelodun I).

NAN also reports that the four are all first term lawmakers in the house.

Bello, the former Minority Leader of the House and Famakinwa were part of the seven lawmakers that defected in 2017 from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC.

Other PDP defectors include Mr Victor Akande (Ojo I); Olusola Sokunle (Oshodi-Isolo I); Jude Idimogu (Oshodi-Isolo II); Fatai Oluwa (Ajeromi-Ifelodun II) and Mrs Mosunmola Sangodara (Surulere II).

2019: APC’ll not buy votes, says Ekiti deputy gov

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:32 AM PST

Bisi Egbeyemi
The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, on Friday said the ruling party, All Progressives Congress would not indulge in vote-buying in the forthcoming elections.

Egbeyemi said APC will not engage in any filthy practice that can cast a pall on the party, saying APC led government monumental achievements and President Buhari's integrity would serve as a pointer.

Speaking while inaugurating the APC Ekiti Central senatorial Campaign council for the 2019 elections, Egbeyemi, said the only thing he foresaw that can dim the chances of the party is an act of betrayal.

The Council is to campaign across the 57 wards in the district for the victories of President Muhammadu Buhari and senatorial candidate, Hon Opeyemi Bamidele, the House of Representatives candidates in constituencies 1 and II, Hon Sola Fatoba and Hon Wunmi Ogiunlola respectively and the House of Assembly candidates in the next elections.

Egbeyemi said: "The task is not too much for us to achieve. We are here today because Bamidele didn't die during the gunshot of June 1, 2018. God specifically preserved him for the senatorial ticket, because he will win.

"We are not going to buy votes, we are not used to it. Even those who did it in the last election got instant punishment. All we need to tell our people is that our candidates will do well the way governor Kayode Fayemi has been doing", he stated.

"The laudable achievement of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Fayemi within his first 100 days in office was enough to serve as a pointer to the people of Ekiti State to vote massively for APC in the coming polls"

" If members are given any logistic, make judicious use of it in the interest of our party. Let us be dedicated. All we want is free and fair elections, we won't engage in vote-buying and tolerate crisis.

"When I saw the list of the council, I had a conclusion that these were people that own the district, so the job has been made easier if only we can go home and work hard.

" I want you to embark on the house to house campaign and let people know Fayemi has started well and ready to do more to deliver dividends of good governance", he said.

He advised members of the All Progressives Congress(APC) not to betray the party for their candidates to be victorious in the next elections.

The senatorial candidate of the party in Ekiti Central, Hon Bamidele said the candidates in the district will run a joint campaign since it is about the survival of the party and not about the individual.

The APC state Chairman, Barr. Paul Omotoso urged members to avoid division and educate voters to reduce the number of void votes that affected the party in the last governorship election.
Omotoso urged them to begin voter education, bemoaning that the party lost over 18,000 votes to poor voting in the last governorship election held in the state thereby reducing the margin of defeat to 19,000.

" No one can be willing to join PDP today, because it is crisis-ridden. So, as we are trying to poach good people in the opposition, don't allow crisis that can dissuade those who want to join us. We must work as a team for these coming polls.

"We are not going to tolerate a situation whereby you will be our member and you will vote for PDP on the day of the election.

Omotoso added that the PDP is no longer a credible alternative in Ekiti and Nigeria at large, saying any APC member who betrays the party shall pay for it dearly.

Going by its composition, the Deputy governor is the Grand Patron of the council, while Chief J.F. Alake is the Chairman and is to be co-chaired by Chief Remi Oguntuase.

PDP Presidential Campaign Rally
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, says the south-east geopolitical zone is itching towards the presidency by supporting the party.

Abubakar disclosed this on Friday in Enugu during the presidential campaign tour of the party.

He said that PDP had never disappointed the people of the region, adding that they would realise the ambition by supporting his aspiration.

He said that it would take a long time for the region to have such an opportunity if they failed to support him.

"You are itching towards the presidency now that your son is my running mate. Vote for the PDP because it has never failed you," Atiku said.

The National Chairman of the party, Mr Uche Secondus, said that the rumour of the party ceding 25 per cent of votes cast in the presidential election to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not true.

Secondus said that the mammoth crowd that came to welcome Atiku was a clear testimony that the state belonged to PDP.

He called on members of the party to be vigilant during the polls to ensure that votes from the region was not tampered with.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, said that the PDP campaign was an opportunity for the people of the area to rededicate themselves to the party.

"This is daybreak for us and we are committed to the PDP. They gave us everything in the past and this is time to regain them," he said.

Ekweremadu urged the people to return all PDP candidates.

The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Dr Bukola Saraki, said that the state would support Atiku.

Saraki said that there was no more rumour of compromise by the leadership of the party in the state.

"This crowd we are seeing is a sign of commitment. There are no more rumour mongers around because Enugu belongs to Atiku," Saraki said.

In a speech, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State said that residents of the state had always voted for the party in previous elections and would continue along that line.

Guber candidate pledges to fight poverty

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:45 AM PST

Zenith  Labour Party
The governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party in Borno State, Captain Ibrahim Mshelia has said that the level of poverty in the state is alarming and if given the opportunity to serve the people as governor, it will be a thing of the past.

Speaking with journalists after a thank you visit the party's secretariat in Abuja, the governorship candidate said that, despite the huge sums of money coming into the state from federal allocations, majority of the citizens of the state are still wallowing in poverty.

Mshelia said the time has come for those who have the interest of the people at heart to come out and take the leadership position to turn the state of affairs of the state around. "I have decided to contest the governorship of Borno State to serve the people and change their life. Everywhere you go in the state, abject poverty; criminality and want stare at you in the face. I can no longer stay behind in the struggle to rejuvenate the lifestyle of our people and elevate their living standard. Enough is enough!"

According to him, the Zenith Labour Party is the only platform that has not been abused by the money bags and political vampires who are only concerned about their selfish interest rather than the interest of the masses, hence; his decision to contest on the platform.

"I have tested the ground and discussed at length with elders from all the constituencies in Borno State before I took my decision and with the support of our people who are yearning for real change including the youths victory is assured," he said.

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:35 AM PST

SEVENTY governorship candidates have gotten the nod of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest the governorship election in Imo State, making it the state with the highest number of governorship candidates in the country.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Ezeonu, disclosed this on yesterday while briefing candidates and party chieftains on the preparedness of the commission.

Ezeonu, disclosed that with barely two weeks to the commencement of the general elections, 547,017 Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs), were yet to be collected at the various INEC offices in the 27 council areas of the state. According to Ezeonu in the meeting attended by INEC National Commissioner in charge of Imo and Abia states,  representatives of the Police, Air Force and other para- military agencies, "Imo has 70 governorship candidates from various political parties contesting in the March 2, general elections, the highest in the country. We are number one here, to God be the glory. We are appealing to the political parties to learn to do the right thing".

On February 8, we will deposit them and quarantine them where no one will have access to them until after general elections." Onnoghen: Confusion over Agbakoba’s petition

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:24 AM PST

Olisa Agbakoba
A petition written by a former president of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Olisa Agbakoba, SAN to the National Judicial Council against CCT chairman Danladi Umar is generating confusion.

Agbakoba in his petition against the CCT chairman gave reasons why he should not preside over the trial of the CJN.

An investigation revealed that the NJC has referred the petition to FJSC.

A highly-placed source said: "Some issues have arisen over the petition sent to FJSC because the CCT chairman is not a judicial officer per se. He is not on the judiciary payroll and he reports to the presidency.

"When sworn in, the CCT chairman only took the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office meant for public officers.  The Judicial Oath was not administered on him.

"The CCT chairman does not collect judicial remunerations and allowances.

"I think the framers of the constitution anticipated this kind of situation and they left CCT on its own without any influence either from the Executive or the Judiciary.

"If the CCT chairman had been a judicial officer, he would not be in a position to try the CJN who will be his boss.

"Also, if you look at the Judicial Oath in the Seventh Schedule to 1999 Constitution, only the CCT chairman was left out of the list of those who should take it.

The Judicial Oath reads: "I, …… do solemnly swear/affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that as Chief Justice of Nigeria/Justice of the Supreme Court/President/Justice of the Court of Appeal/Chief Judge/Judge of the Federal High Court/Chief Judge/Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja/Chief Judge of …… State/Judge of the High Court of …… State/Grand Kadi/Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja/ Grand Kadi/Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of …. State/President/Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja/President/Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal of ……… State. I will discharge my duties, and perform my functions honestly, to the best of my ability and faithfully in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the law, that I will abide by the Code of Conduct contained in the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that I will not allow my personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions; that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."?  But a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who spoke in confidence, said the FJSC can exercise disciplinary control on the CCT chairman.

The SAN said:  "I think the NJC was right in referring Agbakoba's petition against Danladi Umar to the FJSC. The CCT chairman is no an island unto himself.

"If you look at paragraph 13 part 1 of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  FJSC is empowered to discipline the CCT chairman.

The section says: "The Federal Judicial Service Commission has power to: (a).   Advise the National Judicial Council in nominating persons for appointments to the office of :

The Chief Justice of Nigeria,
A Justice of the Supreme Court,
The President of the Court of Appeal,
A Justice of the Court of Appeal,

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court,

A Judge of the Federal High Court,

The President of the National Industrial Court;

A judge of the National Industrial Court; and

the Chairman and Members of the Code of Conduct Tribunal,

b).    Recommend to the National Judicial Council the removal of any of the Judicial Officers mentioned in sub-paragraph (a) above

c).     Appoint, dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over the Chief Registrars and Deputy Chief Registrars of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court and all other members of the staff of the Judicial Service of the Federation not otherwise specified in this Constitution and of the Federal Judicial Service Commission."

As at press time, the FJSC was yet to serve the CCT chairman any copy of the petition by  Agbakoba.

Another source said: "I think the FJSC is also weighing options on the petition and issues around the trial of the CJN  and the status of the CCT chairman.

"If you look at the composition of the NJC, the CJN is the chairman. Both  Onnoghen and the Acting CJN,  Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad who should preside over FJSC have been queried by the National Judicial Council(NJC).

"Also, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami(SAN), who is a member of the FJSC, is in charge of the OAGF prosecuting CJN Onnoghen.

"The case at hand is jut interwoven. The more issues crop up, the more complex we dip into crisis in the Judiciary."

Paragraph 12, part 1 of the Third Schedule to the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, stipulates the composition of Federal Judicial Service Commission as follows:

The Federal Judicial Service Commission shall comprise the following members:

  1. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, who shall be the Chairman;
  2. The President of the Court of Appeal;
  3. The Attorney-General of the Federation;
  4. The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court;
  5. The President of the National Industrial Court;
