"I'm a part of a hip-hop culture where you can talk about where you come from, talk about the wrong things you had to do to get where you are, There are rappers that glorify murder violence drugs an robbing. Crimes they feel they had to do to survive. I never glorified the things I brought up in that live I never even put those things in my music because I'm not proud of it and feel a responsibility not to glorify it," she wrote.

Fireboy's 'Jealous,' hit of 2019 and the Power of Nigerian DJs

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Fireboy Jealous
Despite the power of the internet, the song's success also shows why radio and DJs might still have more power than we realize.

Sleeper hits are a fundamental part of the music culture. They're durable and stand the test of time than other hits; they survive purely on love from the audience and by that, relatively escape the scrutiny and excess rotation off streaming from the audience - at least, till they reach the mainstream.

Thus, sometimes, the listener does not even have them on his playlist. Usually, they're driven by either a niche following or from DJs/radio personalities who are in tune with the culture.

What is a sleeper hit?
A sleeper hit is simply a song/film that lacks a grand launch or huge commercial push, but sustains itself over a long period of time and becomes a huge success.

A key sleeper 2018 hit that slowly spilled over to 2019 is Skibii's 'Sensima' which has since survived 6 months while an 'Able God' slowly has died off. While 'Sensima' could have had a commercial push, there's a reason it did really pop like'Able God' or 'Zanku (Legwork)' in the final months of 2018.

Fireboy, YBNL
On October 16, 2018, Nigerian rap superstar, Olamide had signed an "afrolife" singer to his record label, YBNL just 24 hours after he signed Picazo Rhap and Yomi Blaize to the same label.

At the time, it barely made the news like the signing of Picazo Rhap or even Yomi Blaize. Picazo's signing trended on Twitter just like his 'Able God' freestyle just days earlier. An album was immediately planned.

nterestingly, when the 'YBNL Mafia Family' album dropped in the December 2018, "Jealous" was one of the least talked about songs. The songs that were pushed by YBNL team were 'Macaroni', 'Ika' and the already existent hits from Olamide, 'Poverty Die' and 'Motigbana.'

The other talked about potential hit was, 'Oke Suna,' which ended up not being pushed by the label.

But slowly, in the final days of 2018, a new potential hit started getting love from radio and DJs. In fact, whenever the song came up at parties or on radio, a lot of people who played the 'YBNL Mafia Family' album knew they had heard the song before, but they could seldom place it.

They had to be reminded of whence the song came. The song was Fireboy's 'Jealous.'

If Nigeria had a good charting structure, as at January or even February 2019, 'Jealous' would be somewhere on the Bubbling Under or Heatseekers chart. But slowly, people started singing the song randomly, still unable to place who the artist was or where the song came from - at least, I know a few people like that.

It also helps that the song has an infectious hook, aided by the well mixed Indian movie-esque rhythm that forms its hook. For one, its obvious that Fireboy is a really innovative artist that has probably not even scratched the surface of his artistry yet.

Of the much heralded YBNL 2.0 set that includes social media sensations that includes Yomi Blaize and Picazo Rhap, Fireboy has the most successful single yet and if he can build, he could eclipse them all - but, no pressure. He should take his time.

He has gone from the obscurity on his label class to the most successful act yet. Life has a way of playing tricks on us. But this one is surely welcome.

Radio and DJs are still influential
When a sleeper hit is a song, it is mostly sustained by radio rotation and DJ love. These factors ensure that these songs are etched in our memories that we get forced to search for them.

While radio has lost some of the stranglehold it once had on influencing the soundscape - say in the 90's - to the internet, it still retains some of that influence.

While the power is now shared, radio might not be able to singlehandedly mar a career anymore, but it sure can make a hit - in the case of Fireboy's 'Jealous,' a hit.

Does the success of 'Jealous' mean Fireboy will surely have a successful career? Definitely not, we're far from that. The song has done one thing though and that is make us aware of Fireboy's talent. From here, the halogen has shone on him. What he does next is up to him.

Davido soars on "Emerging Artists" session by Billboard climing from 37 to 28 on Billboard Charts

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 11:30 PM PDT

Davido soars on "Emerging Artists"
The 2017 single by the afrobeats singer, Davido, continues to soar in the American market.

In 2017, Davido released the second of his five monster hits. It was 'Fall,' which became an instant hit in Nigeria, other parts of Africa and in mainstream UK. This was after a frustrated Davido came back home due to an inability to catch a break in the American market.

During his 'Ebro In The Morning' interview on Hot97, New York with Ebro Darden, Davido said he had already given up and was back to focus his energy on Africa again. But then, after he stopped trying, one of his 2017 singles which he recorded after he got back from the US has since become his breakout single in North America.

According to Billboard, in the week ending March 30, 2016, 'Fall,' which has been on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts for six weeks fell from a peak position of number 17 to number 18.

Nonetheless, Davido took the biggest leap on this week's "Emerging Artists" session of the Billboard charts. He moved up nine places from number 37 last week to a new peak position of number 28.

Davido continues to soar as we anticipate his sophomore album.

New Mavin signee, Rema releases his debut project, 'Rema EP.'

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 11:00 PM PDT

'Rema EP.'
The album has its highs and lows, but it's obviously a good debut.

On Friday, March 22, 2019, Nigerian super-Producer, Don Jazzy announced the signing of another Mavin. The act was later revealed to be Rema, an 18-year-old artist. In the social media post which Don Jazzy used to make the announcement, he says,"Rema is a super talented young artist I have no doubt is going to be the future of Afrobeats."

A few days later, on Monday, March 25, 2019, Rema released 'Rema EP' which contains four cohesive and well-produced songs that basically appeal to different sub-demographics of mainstream Nigerian music and showcases his obvious talent - the presumed reason why a powerhouse like Mavin records would ever have gotten involved.

Song review

On the opening track to the EP, 'Iron Man,' one immediately understands the afrolife/afrobeats school that birthed the 18-year-old Rema.

Although lyrically, the song rings from generic to bland, it gets salvaged by commendable vocal manipulations that mimics the atypical Indian song, in line with the major string on the song and an equally commendable beat.

While the song is not lyrically informative, and tells nothing new than the very familiar 'ratchet love stories' that Nigerian commercial/dance music has come to be known for, one understands that Rema has to make something to announce himself to the market.

But then, when 'Why' comes on with a typical generation X/Soundcloud generation music; trap-infused emo/cloud music from the staple of XXXTentacion, Lil Peep, Paris, Juice WRLD, but more like Makonnen, I get blown away because I did not see it coming.

It showcases an artist with adaptable talent, recognized by the team behind him that he could make much more than basic dance music. Although, 'Why' tells another generic love story, this shortcoming is less noticeable that it was on 'Iron Man.'

Rema delivered on 'Why' and I suspect that other listeners will have similar sentiments to mine. One hopes it gets a video.

By the time it gets to the 'Dumebi,' one might not be able to help forgetting the yearning for 'content' as the song is filled with vibes to this beautiful beat and well-timed vocal cadences/flow by Rema whose technique is admirable.

The final track, 'Corny' creatively falls slightly short of 'Why' and 'Dumebi,' but sonically, it's still several cuts ahead of 'Iron Man.

Verdict
It is obvious there's a good songwriter behind a song like, 'Why' that's not pushing his creative boundaries as much as he should, but sometimes, pushing artistic boundaries might prove risky in a market that largely loves its party jams.

One thing is for sure though, something made Rema make 'Why,' a standout on Rema EP. This album excels on cohesion, a tracklist that enabled transcendence and segues, good production and experimentation ('Why' as the pinnacle), but struggles to with good lyricism, storytelling and unnecessary or sometimes excessive rhythmic chants of 'hmmmm' or 'pon pon pon.'

Some fast listeners could be also easily put off by the opening track.

What then can a young talented act like Rema do? One hopes he can balance out his act by merging something for the radio which brings in money with something to improve and help his talent evolve - especially with the gaze of influential music minds from the global bigwigs increasingly getting focused on Africa.

Once one can overlook the very forgivable weaknesses of 'Rema EP,' it is a quite enjoyable listen, definitely aided by its brevity.

Except the first track, the album delivers on what it was meant to be. However, this strategy might not always be sufficient to make a good album. This time though, it will do just fine.

The Movie ‘4th Republic’ second trailer released ahead of movie release date by Ishaya Bako

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 10:30 PM PDT

The Movie '4th Republic'
Ahead of the April 12 official release of Ishaya Bako's '4th Republic,' a second trailer has been released.

The one-minute long trailer was released one month after the release of the first trailer by Amateurhead studios.

'4th Republic,' a highly anticipated political thriller features Kate Henshaw who plays the role of Mabel King, a female governorship candidate in the Confluence state.

Speaking to Pulse on the movie, Henshaw said, "4th Republic portrays our political terrain the way we do politics here in Nigeria. And it also speaks to a hope in the future that hopefully, a woman one day will become a governor, not just a deputy as is the norm."

The film follows a hotly contested gubernatorial election and King's quest to take back the seat she believes she rightfully won against all odds.

On his part, the movie director, Bako said, "4th Republic explores the dynamics of politics in Nigeria today.

"There is a multitude of factors at play; the violence that mars our polls, the new trend of fighting for justice at the tribunals and the roles we as a society assign to women who aspire to powerful positions," he added.

'4th Republic' story begins after the gruesome murder of Mabel King's campaign manager, Sikiru. The gubernatorial aspirant challenges the victory of the incumbent, Idris Sani for her mandate. While governor Sani's associate, St. James and Ike's Law School rival, Danladi attempt to subvert the course of justice by eliminating witnesses, King is supported by her loyal aide Ike, and Sikiru's daughter Bukky.

Written by Emil B. Garuba and Zainab Omaki, '4th Republic' is co-produced by Griot Studios Ltd. and Amateur Heads Productions with Bem Pever, Ishaya Bako, Kemi 'Lala' Akindoju and Ummi A. Yakubu serving as producers.

Niniola in the new luxurious video for 'Designer'

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Niniola
The new video is both funny and luxurious.

After dropping the simply brilliant and lustre-filled video for her last hit, 'Bana,' Nigeria's Queen of afro-house is back with a sizzling video for her 2019 Sarz-produced single, 'Designer' and the video is beautiful.

The video which also features cameos from stars like Damilola Adegbite portrays Niniola as a successful woman with all the needed luxuries of life, including a Versace champagne glass finally get the man she wants after a number of efforts from the 'skrep' she does not like.

With a core celebration of luxury as connoted by the song's title and hook, we also see the singer perform some dance moves in figure-hugging outfits that showcase her curves. In the video, Niniola's character shares a smile with a guy who smiles back, indicating a 'shot.'

The next thing was that a totally random guy approached Niniola's character who was obviously having none of it. She rejected luxury outfits and even a car. She was about to turn another knock on her door down only to discover it was her, 'Mr. Perfect' with whom she shared a smile at the club who was at her door.

The video is not only intended to be luxurious, it also has moments of humour. You can watch the video below;

Huawei announces new P30 Series

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 11:18 AM PDT

Huawei
Huawei Consumer Business Group (BG) unveiled the HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro on Tuesday, 26 March 2019 at an exclusive launch held at the Paris Convention Centre.

The HUAWEI P30 Series builds on the HUAWEI P Series DNA in design and photography and is the company's most advanced series of smartphone cameras. These devices feature the innovative HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor, an optical SuperZoom Lens, a new HUAWEI Time of Flight (ToF) Camera, and enhanced optical and AI image stabilization technology. With these revolutionary technologies, the HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro capture incredible photos and videos in every scenario.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer BG, said, "the HUAWEI P30 Series is a fundamental breakthrough after decades of digital camera technology development; it will rewrite the rules and reshape everyone's perception of mobile photography. Innovations such as the HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor and SuperZoom Lens allow us to push the envelope of both photography and videography—a frontier long overdue for disruption. The HUAWEI P30 Series will set the pace for the next generation of smartphones by empowering people to capture the true beauty of the world around them through a device that fits in the palm of their hands."

Achieving a record-high overall DxOMark score of 112, the HUAWEI P30 Pro is equipped with a new Leica Quad Camera System, including a 40MP main camera with the HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor, a 20MP ultra-wide angle camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, the HUAWEI ToF Camera and a 32MP front camera that takes selfies to a new level.

The 1/1.7-inch HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor looks at light in a fundamentally new way. The RYYB HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor deviates from the traditional RGGB Bayer filter by replacing green pixels with yellow pixels, yielding a high maximum ISO rating of 409,600 on the HUAWEI P30 Pro and 204,800 on the HUAWEI P30. This fundamental shift in sensor technology, combined with HUAWEI AIS, OIS and the HUAWEI P30 Pro's f/1.6 wide aperture, delivers extraordinary photography and videography experiences across a wide range of scenarios and lighting conditions—including extreme low light—producing images with enhanced detail, colour and clarity.

The new SuperZoom Lens unlocks a superior level of zoom photography in a slim-line device design. Through a new periscope design, the SuperZoom Lens supports high fidelity magnification of 5 times optical zoom, 10 times hybrid zoom and 50 times digital zoom. A prism element in the telephoto camera bends light at a 90-degree angle to maximize focal length while minimizing camera height, without disrupting device design.

The HUAWEI ToF Camera unleashes the imagination. Unique to the HUAWEI P30 Pro is a HUAWEI ToF Camera that captures depth-of-field information to deliver accurate image segmentation. Precise distance measurement allows for the simulation of multiple levels of bokeh. The Super Portrait feature captures even the smallest details, such as individual strands of hair. It combines depth information and proprietary algorithms to produce outstanding images with defocused backgrounds and highlights the subject of the image in any scenario.

Huawei AI HDR+ enables the front and rear cameras to combine multiple photos taken in quick succession to eliminate overexposed and backlit images.

The HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor enables low-light video capture so night scenes appear bright and highly detailed. HUAWEI AIS and OIS support stabilization for all video capture settings, resulting in a perfect, steady shot. Additionally, the SuperZoom Lens allows for crisp close-ups, while the AI Video Editor enables users to add background music and special effects to their videos, turning the HUAWEI P30 Series into a mobile production studio.

HUAWEI Dual-View Video can capture two perspectives of the same scene at the same time by using multiple cameras simultaneously. The HUAWEI P30 Series provides a full view of a scene while also capturing a close-up of a subject, unleashing new and exciting possibilities for video.

The 6.47-inch HUAWEI P30 Pro and 6.1-inch HUAWEI P30 come in Breathing Crystal, Amber Sunrise, Aurora, Pearl White and Black. The FHD+ (2340×1080) Dewdrop Display features a tiny notch, providing maximum display area. The near bezel-less front glass houses an In-Screen Fingerprint sensor for quick and secure identity authentication. The HUAWEI P30 Pro also features HUAWEI Acoustic Display Technology that enables it to deliver high-quality audio through a sound emitting display.

Huawei also launched the HUAWEI WATCH GT Active Edition and Elegant Edition, outdoor smartwatches featuring ultra-long battery life; HUAWEI FreeLace wireless earphones, which support HUAWEI HiPair for easy pairing and fast charging; and HUAWEI X GENTLEMONSTER EYEWEAR, new smart glasses co-designed with renowned eyewear designer GENTLE MONSTER.

Rwanda's president Kagame, open to drive digitisation in Africa

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 11:05 AM PDT

Paul Kagame
Rwandan President, Paul Kagame and Globacom's Executive Vice Chairman, Mrs Bella Disu, on Monday, March 25 began discussions on the use of digital technology to help the march towards economic prosperity in Africa. The two leaders held a private meeting after the opening session of the two-day Africa CEO Forum taking place in Kigali, Rwanda.

Globacom said it was willing to use its massive infrastructure, including the Glo 1 international submarine cable, to drive digitalization on the continent.

President Kagame said Africa's hopes of achieving regional integration and economic growth would not be realized without modern technology. He also commended the success Globacom has made.

The Rwandan leader who had in his opening remarks at the forum called for "open, responsive and accountable governance" on the continent, said the private sector was critical to growth because of its ability to "envision on what needs to be changed to achieve desired improvement in the private and public sectors".

Mrs Disu said Globacom's Glo 1 armoured submarine cable and digital solutions such as mobile money, artificial intelligence, E-Health, Smart Cognitive Learning and Smart Energy, could help Africa achieve a digitalized economy.
"I commend President Kagame for his exemplary leadership and for the tremendous success Rwanda has achieved under him. Like President Kagame, I have no doubt that greater integration will lead to continental growth and a more prosperous Africa. Globacom is committed to Africa'seconomic renaissance," Mrs Disu stated.

The Globacom EVC also chaired a session on "Women in Business" on the opening day of the forum. She called for more gender parity on the boards of companies and applauded Rwanda's policy of 50% female representation in appointments as a good model.

"There are no two ways about it, women must continue to advance. After all, we make up more than half of the world's population.

"My charge to women is to keep climbing the career ladder. Climb it anxious. Climb it confidently. But just keep climbing. And when you get to the top, because you will – give a helping hand to the women coming behind you – this is how we grow," Mrs Disu said.

The opening session was attended by Cote d'Ivoire's Prime Minister, Amadou Gon Coulibaly; Ethiopian President, Sahle-Work Zewde; Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbé; President of Congo Democratic Republic, Felix Tshisekedi, Prime Minister of Rwanda, Édouard Ngirente, and over 1800 leading decision makers in the private and public sectors in Africa.

Suspected Rapist Apprehended in Egbeda, Lagos State

Read what she wrote and watch the video of the man confessing below:

Barnabas mclinton called me this morning and sent me this video.

Here's what he wrote:

I slept at this hotel last night at Egbeda. Early this morning sometime around 7am I heard shouting from the room next door. Came out and saw the manager already by the door knock. I heard a female voice shouting from inside so I rushed out forgetting I was on briefs.

I joined to bang the door till the male occupant opened the door when I threatened I was a police officer.

This idiot tried to rape a 15 year old teenager who was running away from abuse at her sister's and wanted to go to her mother's. The fool offered to help the girl, told her to join him to an hotel where she'll bathe and have something to eat before going to her mother's.

But as usual such predators have something else in mind….

Why Chinese are making it in Nigeria

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 10:24 AM PDT

Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye, the Director of the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday said the Chinese had seen opportunities in factors that posed challenges to Nigerians.

Falaiye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was so because Nigerians at home and abroad had yet to realise the huge opportunities in their country due to perceived challenges.

According to him, Chinese are smiling to their banks from the
opportunities in Nigeria, while young Nigerians daily craved for travelling abroad because of their perceived challenges in the country.

"What our nationals and young Nigerians wanting to travel to Europe and other countries do not know is that Nigeria, in terms of creativity and development, is a virgin land.

"Nigeria, we must know is a virgin land. Nigeria is a country that is abundant in opportunities, but Nigerians are just not looking for opportunities around them.

"We complain and give excuses too much. We complain of problems of insecurity, unstable power supply and all of those challenges, but here we have the Chinese making so much money from these challenges.

"We concentrate too much on the negative things and always fail to see the positive things. Why the Chinese are seeing opportunities in what we see as challenges, they are making a lot money that we nationals should have been making,'' he said.

Falaiye said that Nigerians at home and abroad rather than support the governments in managing the nation's challenges had continued to give excuses for their failures and inactions.

The institute's director, who decried the increasing rate of illegal
migration by young Nigerians, added that it was imperative for them to know that those destination countries were developed by their nationals.

Falaiye said that it was wrong for Nigerians abroad and young
Nigerians planning to travel Europe and other countries to continue to think that nothing good could happen in Nigeria.

The director enjoined the Federal Government to intensify its ongoing effort at creating the enabling environment for Nigerians to join foreigners in harnessing opportunities in their country.

Falaiye also advised young Nigerians against the mindset that there were better opportunities for them abroad

Killer of ex-Ondo State Deputy Governor's Daughter found Guilty and Sentenced to Death by Hanging
Seidu Adeyemi, the killer of ex-Ondo deputy governor's daughter, Khadijat Oluboyo, has been sentenced to death by hanging.

Adeyemi was charged for killing his girlfriend, Khadijat Oluboyo, on July 2, 2018 and burying her inside his room at Aratusi, Oke-Aro area of Akure.

Khadijat was a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba Akoko (AAUA) until her death.

The deceased and Seidu dated for eight years. According to police investigation, Seidu allegedly killed Khadijah for ritual purposes and then buried her in his room.

On July 12th 2018, while he was being paraded, Seidu denied killing Khadijah. Explaining how she was killed, Seidu said:

"Khadijat was my girlfriend since 2010 and she visited me to help her in writing her final project in school. She slept in my place on Thursday and left on Friday the following day. She sent a text message to me on Monday, 2nd July that I should send some money to her.

But I was surprised to see her that same Monday when she came with two boys to my room. I left her in my room with the two boys but when they called me some 30 minutes later, one of the guys brought out a gun and ordered me to kneel down while one of them was making love to Khadijat who was naked on my bed. Khadijat was begging them to leave and promising not to tell anyone about what happened but they strangulated her in the process and ordered me to go and bring digger and shovel.

I thought they wanted to use that to escape from the scene of the incident but when I entered the room they were still there and ordered me to dig the grave where we buried her in my room and covered it with the rug. "

Multi-choice gives warning to Nigerians against new Fraud Tactics Fraudsters use in the Name of BBNaija
Multichoice has dissociated itself from the activities of a scammer who is trying to defraud upcoming musicians who wish that their works are aired on Big Brother Naija Show Season Four.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) investigation reveals that the scammer, identified as Fola, is requesting the artistes to pay different sums for their acts to feature in the show.

Fola sends Whatsapp announcements to the musicians to enable them to participate in the show at a fee. (attachment)

The deal has three packages, namely, per song rotation in the house, performance at the live shows and a DJ package.

The first package costs N150, 000, the second, N450, 000 and the third, N250, 000.

Under the deal, the artistes are to be invited to play on one of the Saturday parties that are part of the BBNaija show.

NAN found that the money is to be paid into a proxy account not connected to DStv, a direct broadcast satellite service owned by Multichoice, the organisers of the show.

When approached, a representative of the promoter simply asked NAN for the package the artiste wanted and if he would love to perform or have his songs played in the house.

The representative thereafter requested the artiste to make payment and send the song via mail.

Amnesty International wants Kano supplementary polls probed

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 09:47 AM PDT

Amnesty International has urged Federal Government to investigate alleged cases of political thuggery and violence on journalists and electorate during the supplementary election conducted in Kano State.

Isa Sanusi, the Amnesty International Spokesperson, made the call in an interview with BBC Hausa service, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu, Yobe.

"Amnesty International condemns the human rights violation during supplementary election exercise conducted in Kano especially on journalists and electorates.

"We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to lunch an investigation into the issue.

"Extensive electoral security problems were observed in some areas, with groups of men with weapons intimidating and obstructing the process, and security agencies ineffective at protecting citizens' right to vote."

NAN reports that supplementary governorship elections were conducted in Bauchi, Benue, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto — where results from the March 9 initial ballot were declared inconclusive as the margin of victory was less than the cancelled votes.

INEC on Sunday declared Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress winner of the governorship supplementary election.

NAN reports that the European Union Election Observation Mission on Monday said that it witnessed organised violence and intimidation of voters during Saturday's rerun in parts of Kano, Bauchi and Benue States.

Specifically, the Mission said police and party leaders failed to prevent attacks on electoral officials by youth gangs armed with clubs and machetes in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State which accounted for one-third of all registered voters for the supplementary governorship election.

The EU EOM in a statement on the supplementary poll, stated that its observers could not access many polling units in Kano due to security concerns.

Igbo youths congratulate Buhari

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 09:38 AM PDT

Muhammadu Buhari
The Igbo Youth Assembly Worldwide has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on its success in the just concluded elections.

A statement by the President and Secretary-General of the assembly, Mazi Ifeanyi Nwaudunna and Casmir Irekamba on Wednesday in Abuja, also applauded Buhari's leadership qualities.

The group commended Nigerian voters and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for remaining focused on ensuring the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections even after the initial postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly polls.

The assembly advised the President to remain focused on fully keeping all the campaign promises he made to Nigerians.

It also requested the President to allow an Igbo man to occupy the position of President of the Senate president as a way of balancing the political equation.

According to the group, dedicating the position of senate president to the South East would go a long way toward promoting inclusiveness and national unity.

The group further said that with the President coming from the North, the vice president from the South West, it would only be fair, equitable, and just to consider an Igboman or someone from South East for the position of senate president.

The group urged Buhari to do all he could to strengthen his foothold in Igboland, saying that it would amount to injustice not to consider people from the region for "appointment to sensitive positions this time around''.

"The contribution of the South East to national development cannot be dismissed by the wave of the hand.

"Some states such as Abia and Imo gave Buhari as much as 37 per cent and 30 per cent during the presidential election,'' the group noted.

The group said it was prepared to make itself available for dialogue on ways to promote extensive unity and development of the country.

It expressed good wishes for the president's second term in office and urged him to remain focused on ensuring good governance e and across-the-board leadership.

Kuje residents set agenda for new council boss

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 09:29 AM PDT

Kuje Road
Some residents of Kuje Area Council, FCT, have urged the new Chairman of the council, Mr Abdullahi Sabo, to focus on addressing challenges bothering on infrastructure, education and environment for the development of the area.

They made the call in separate interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, while reacting to the outcome of the March 23 supplementary election in the area.

NAN reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Sabo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the supplementary poll for Kuje Area Council.

Prof. Titus Ibekwe, the INEC Returning Officer who announced the result, said Sabo scored the highest votes of 19, 090 to defeat the incumbent chairman, Mr Abdulahi Galadima of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 15, 187.

Mr Abraham Gado, a resident of Kuchiyako Community in Kuje, said not much was achieved by the outgoing administration, adding that the community suffered massive infrastructure decay due to neglect.

Gado urged the new chairman to take proactive steps in completing abandoned road projects and creating a new bypass, to ease traffic congestion, especially during rush hours.

He said: "Very little attention was given to infrastructure development by the outgoing administration, particularly on completing abandoned projects.

"There is a need to develop Kuje Area Council, because very little attention was given to communities that needed attention.

"Nigerians are getting wiser day by day, if he works hard, it will determine his re-election in the next three years," he said.

Mrs Esther Kure of Shadadi area also urged Sabo to fix the dilapidated roads and address inadequate power supply in the area.

Kure, who noted that residents of the community had "been totally neglected from enjoying the dividends of democracy", called on the new chairman to come to the rescue of the residents.

Mr Obina Eze, a businessman, called on the new chairman to reduce the amount fixed on renting shops in Kuje market for business activities to thrive.

Eze said no nation could gain meaningful development without the involvement of the economic sector and business operators.

"The government in the past paid little attention to the "bread winners" of the economy, particularly the business operators.

"Sabo should reduce the amount fixed on renting shops in Kuje market and create a conducive environment for business to grow," he said.

INEC presents certificate of return to Okowa

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 09:02 AM PDT

Ifeanyi Okowa
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday presented certificate of return to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and withheld certificates of returns of four Assembly constituencies due to pending court cases.

Out of the 29 constituencies in the Assembly, four constituencies were not issued certificate of return due to pending cases in court.

The four constituencies denied certificate of return are: Ethiope East (APC); Ughelli North I (APC); Ughelli North II (APC); and Ukwuani Constituency (PDP).

At the presentation ceremony in Asaba, the National Commissioner of INEC in charge of South-South, Dr Mohammed Lecky, urged politicians to place the nation above self even in time of victory.

"This is the only way the dividends of democracy for which many have paid the supreme price can truly be within the reach of voters, majority of who went through enormous troubles to exercise their franchise,'' he said.

Lecky while congratulating the governor-elect and the state Assembly members, said, "Section 75(10) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended provides for the issuance of certificate of return to elected candidates by the chairman of INEC''.

In his address, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Cyril Omorogbe, commended security agencies who worked tirelessly to tackle threat to peace and security in the course of the election.

Omorogbe, however, regretted the loss of lives and destruction of property that accompanied the exercise in some voting centres in the state.

According to him, we share in the grief of families and friends of the deceased and those who lost property.

Responding, Okowa thanked God for making his victory possible.

He commended INEC for conducting an election in the state that was adjudged very peaceful.

Okowa also commended INEC for being firm in the discharge of its duties and noted that there was also room for growth and improvement of the nation's democracy.

According to him, our democracy can only grow when we as notable politicians are ready to partner with INEC and learn to put the interest of the country first.

"The interest of this country is that we must conduct election in such a way and manner that the global world will be able to also see Nigeria as a growing democracy.

"To that extent we will attract more investors into this country to invest and that will help to create jobs for our people,'' he said.

The governor while commending the people of the state gave an assurance that "in the next four years, we are going to do much more than we did in the last four years''.

Okowa, therefore, called for full participation of the people of the state in good governance and in ensuring that the dividends of democracy were delivered to the people.

According to him, we realised that we cannot do the job alone and we need the collaboration of all Deltans to enable us to achieve that which we want to achieve.
