Adekunle Gold shares why he helped Olawale, 2013 Project Fame winner turned Uber driver

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 11:30 PM PDT

Adekunle Gold
Social media was set abuzz around September 2018, after news broke that Olawale, the 2013 winner of highly coveted music talent show MTN Project Fame, had become poor and resorted to becoming an Uber driver.

Members of the online community heavily lambasted the singing star, with many suggesting that he was a wasteful spender who could not make the best of all the opportunities the MTN sponsored show afforded him.

In a report gathered, Olawale revealed that selling the car he won was not an option for him because he was not sure he would be evenly rewarded if he invests the money in his music career. For this reason, he turned a blind eye to critics and decided to earn a decent living by using the car for the Uber ride service.

In a following development however, luck shined on Olawale after much loved singer Adekunle Gold, came across his video and was moved by his sincerity and conviction to pursue a honest means of survival.

Adekunle Gold while speaking to radio presenter Kaylah Oniwo of Cool FM 96.9, made a revelation about how he sent a direct message to Olawale on Instagram, wrote a song for him, and put in his own quota in helping him find his feet again in the music industry.

"When I saw his video that went viral talking about him doing Uber and how people have abused him on how do you go from winning Project Fame to riding Uber, and he was just being honest. He was just saying I can't steal, I don't know how to steal, a man has to do what he has to do to fend for himself. And that touched me because that's everything I've always been about." he said.

See why Annie Idibia said she prefers been referred to as an actress and not Tubaba’s wife

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Actress and wife of Nigerian singer, 2face Idibia, Annie, has stated that she doesn't like being reffered to as Tubaba's wife and instead prefers to be addressed and identified on the basis of her own achievements as a successful actress.

In a fresh interview with Punch, the mother of two said

"Being addressed as Tubaba's wife instead of Annie the actress has been a problem that I have been trying to work on for a long time. I want to believe that I have successfully been able to identify and differentiate my brand as Annie Idibia the actress/career woman and Annie Idibia the wife/mother. I prefer being addressed as Annie and not Tubaba's wife. I hate this because I am my own person and have worked hard to build my career and brand. I should be identified and respected on that basis".

Mr Ibu Narrates How He Woke Up After Been Dead For Four Days

Mr Ibu Narrates How He Woke Up After Been Dead For Four Days
Comic actor, John Forsook popularly known as Mr Ibu is still in shock. He probably wouldn't have been alive to tell his story if not for God who gave him a second chance to live.
Recall that the comic actor made headlines recently after it was reported that he was down with a stroke. Though Mr. Ibu made a video to debunk the report, it was not far from the truth.

Meanwhile, the 57-year-old actor has confirmed that he had a near-death experience last December, and it was by divine intervention that he's still alive today.

According to the comic actor, he was attacked and hypnotized while he was in Nnewi, Anambra State to grace an occasion organized by one of the big shots in the town. In the course of the attack by unknown two men in white apparels, the actor said he became unconscious and later his body was lying on the floor of the hotel, where he was lodged for hours before he was confirmed dead by doctors at a near-by hospital in Nnewi. Was he unconscious or dead? Could what he was saying be a Nollywood script? He used the word 'dead.'

The actor also added that while he was dead for four days, he heard a mysterious voice and believed it might be from a heavenly entity, most probably God or Death telling him to go back, as he immediately woke up in a hospital in Enugu.

Narrating his horrifying experience for the first time in an exclusive interview with our reporter, the comic actor said "All the stories flying around; the issue of stroke among others are funny to me. This is because the original problem I had was on the 24th of December last year. An Nnewi-based business mogul, Ebube Chukwu Uzo, had invited me to come and perform at his party.

I was in London when he contacted me on the telephone. I promised him that I would be back soon. So, I left London for Lagos on the 19th of December. I made a brief stopover in Ivory Coast where I spent few a days before returning to the country on the 22 December.

" On the morning of 24 December, I flew into Enugu to assemble my dancers and artistes before heading to Nnewi by road. When we landed Nnewi, I never knew that the people who had been in touch with me all this while were the enemies of my host. They were busy diverting my movement out of the appropriate place."

"And before I knew what was happening, I found myself in a hotel they claimed to have booked for me. While I was waiting for them there, I went to a quiet place to avoid creating a scene. I kept communicating with them until they arrival at the hotel."

Narrating further, Mr. Ibu said, "My P.A was the only person who was with me at that moment. But few minutes after he went downstairs to buy soft drink (because he said he was thirsty) two men dressed in white clothes walked up to me and immediately, I suspected they were the people I was waiting for.

I stood up because I was lying down when they arrived. I looked at their faces and saw them smiling at me. I said to them 'where are we heading to?' Nobody replied me. I said okay, if you are my fans there's no problem. Before I could finish speaking, a big blow landed on my nose and mouth. I passed out immediately, and later my lifeless body was lying on the floor while my spirit was hanging in the air. I wasn't standing on anything neither was I holding anything

I was seeing what the two men were doing to my body but they were not seeing me. I was surprised they were not seeing me where I was standing. My spirit was seeing them." Ibu meant that his physical body was lying lifeless on the ground but his spirit was seeing them as he had left his body.

"They succeeded in putting life out of that body before they left the place. Meanwhile, one of the cleaners in the hotel saw what happened to me and raised an alarm before my P.A and other sympathizers rushed down to the place where my lifeless body was lying on the ground.

They tried to revive me but to no avail. I was hearing what they were discussing, but they couldn't see me. At a point, the owner of the hotel suggested that they should take my corpse to the mortuary but my boys refused. The following day, which was 25th of December, they moved my body to a nearby hospital in Nnewi where the doctor on duty confirmed me dead and advised my boys to deposit my corpse into the mortuary."

"My boys refused to adhere to the doctor's advice. They moved my lifeless body to Enugu on the 26th of December. When we reached Enugu, they took me to one herbal hospital and the first doctor that examined my body confirmed that there was no life in me any longer.

My boys did not give up. On 28 December after the doctors couldn't revive me, while in the spiritual realm, a face like a masquerade was revealed and was smiling at me. It later disappeared before two hands appeared from the blue and commanded me to go back. Immediately, I woke up , and everybody took to their heels.

When I woke up I could neither walk nor talk again. It was obvious that something happened to me. On the 30th of December, my wife arrived Enugu and when she saw me she started crying, while I was laughing. At a point, she started playing with me. She held my hand and was teaching me how to walk again. Soon, I started regaining my senses. On the 30th of December I finally regained full consciousness. I asked my wife what we were doing in Enugu. I said to her, 'I told you I was going to Nnewi; how come we ended up in Enugu?'

"My wife told me to calm down; that she was going to tell me everything that happened along the line. And when I regained full consciousness she narrated everything that happened to me. I was dumbfounded. That's how I came back to my senses. After I was discharged from the hospital the man that invited me to Nnewi managed to send my flight ticket back to Lagos with that of my wife. That's how I returned to Lagos alive, and since then nobody has called me to inquire about my condition of health," Mr. Ibu narrated.

Asked why he was attacked by the men, the comic actor said he was not the original target, but his host was. According to him, the enemies of his host always strike whenever he was organizing an event in his home town. He revealed that two big boys from South Africa who were attending the party were killed the same day he was attacked.

The comic actor said he saw all his past events in life just like a cinema during the near-death experience. While thanking God for sparing his life, Mr Ibu said he has fully recovered from the shock, except for the pain in his right eye. He also recounted that after the incident, he was always seeing masquerade in dreams. "But I thank God that the will of my enemies did not prevail against my life. They couldn't kill me because God knows I didn't offend anybody," he added.

Mr Ibu said the experience had taught him to be careful, even though he knows that things like these happen. He decried that people have been after his life for no just cause.

Seun Kuti: Yahoo boys are Mugu
Seun Kuti, son of late legendary singer and human right activist; Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has called Yahoo boys mugu in reaction to the brouhaha about internet fraudsters in Nigeria.

According to a post he shared on social media, Yahoo boys are nothing but fools because the money they earn from scamming white men are still spent on materials made by white men. This he says is no different from returning the money to them.

Seun Kuti wrote:

"Wetin yahoo boy dey take money do?" he asked. "No be to buy expensive white man's things? Lol. If they weren't busy buying white man's drink but building their communities maybe just maybe, I will see dem but I don't.

steal white man's money and the only way you can express that wealth is too seek validation by consuming the most expensive white man's things and you say you are a gee? All Yahoo boys are mugus for whitey still, dem be learner.

Wait, that 100k you used three months to set the job, how long did it take Gucci to collect it back? MUGU. Until we can express our success outside of white validation through their brands and luxury items of status and class, U STILL BE MUGU"

Woman Slumps As Supposed Dead Husband Was Discovered In Another Town

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 04:28 PM PDT

A woman allegedly collapsed at Kwaku in Ghana during the Easter festivities after she had reportedly seen her husband, who was supposed to have been dead two years ago.

According to the report, the supposed 55-year-old man was found in the company of a 25-year-old girlfriend.

The woman, after sighting her husband, got shocked and alarmed, and so decided to monitor their every move.

She trailed them to a guesthouse where they were said to be lodging for the festivities.

Upon inquiry, the manager reportedly confirmed to the woman that the husband and the girlfriend had checked into the guesthouse the previous night.

The woman was said to have called the police to the scene to help address her confusion. However, upon arriving at the guesthouse, both the man and the girlfriend were found dead. "They came in very drunk and started kissing as soon as we gave them the keys but we don't know what happened next," the guesthouse manager said.

The police commander at Kwaku was said to have confirmed the incident in an interview with Joy FM. "We rushed to the scene as soon as we received a call from the woman. We found her husband with a 25-year-old lady who was also dead. We believe their death was caused by over-excitement but we're still investigating," the commander said.

However, it cannot be verified if the said man was indeed dead as the wife claimed, or he had, in a way, fled home to be with his girlfriend.

Perhaps, he had gone out of the house without ever returning, making the family attribute his absence to his death. The woman was said to have collapsed and was receiving treatment at a private hospital.

AI-powered smart companion, rAInbow recognised by UN

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 09:05 AM PDT

Sage Founder
Sage has announced that AI-powered smart companion, rAInbow, has won a UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Netexplo Award.

Founding partner Sage Foundation worked with AI for Good and the Soul City Institute for Social Justice to develop rAInbow. It is an artificial intelligence (AI) powered smart companion supporting victims of domestic violence in South Africa.

Accessed via Facebook Messenger, rAInbow democratises access to information and support for victims of domestic violence, their friends and their family. It provides a safe space for those at risk of entering controlling relationships, including victims and survivors of domestic violence, to access information about their rights, support options and where they can find help – in friendly, simple language.

During development, Sage Foundation gathered close to one hundred true stories in face to face meetings with women who have experienced domestic abuse. These true stories allow rAInbow to present recognisable scenarios and to interact in a conversational way. The result has been engagement rates four times higher than the industry average.

Netexplo is an independent observatory that studies the impact of digital technology on society and business. The Netexplo Innovation Forum, in partnership with UNESCO, showcase 10 breakthrough digital innovations from a pool of 2,000 spotted by a global network of leading universities.

Sage Foundation VP, Debbie Wall adds: "rAInbow exemplifies the beneficial possibilities of AI, by opening conversations victims often don't want to have with a real person.

"This integration of community service and tech innovation sits neatly within our global programme of corporate philanthropy, for which one of our key pillars is supporting women. It's particularly important to us given that South Africa has one of the highest femicide rates in the world. I wholeheartedly thank the UNESCO Netexplo team for recognising the value of this innovation."

The award was accepted by Kriti Sharma, VP of AI at Sage and Founder of AI for Good, at the Netexplo Innovation Forum 2019 hosted at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, from 17 to 19 April.

"We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award. It validates our belief that we can use technology to solve social challenges like domestic violence. The award also acknowledges that when technologists and non-technologists come together to solve a problem, they can make a massive impact in the world," says Sharma.

School of Software Engineering to Launch in South Africa

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 03:02 AM PDT

Coding
The State Information Technology Agency (SITA) has developed a curriculum at schools to include ICT initiatives such as coding, software development and other digital skills. This is a national initiative that SITA, in accordance with its business development plan, will implement one province at a time.

The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the Free State, Mr Pule Herbert Isak Makgoe, will officially inaugurate the Free State SITA School of Software Engineering at Kopanong Secondary School at Turflaagte, Mangaung in Bloemfontein. The SITA Chairperson Mr Zukile Nomvete and Board of directors will also be in attendance.
Buoyed by both the NDP and the National ICT Policy White Paper, SITA's aim is to empower all South Africans by enhancing service delivery through technology, creating partnerships to improve quality of life and – crucially – investing in skilling the youth. Investing in ICT skills for learners is investing in South Africa's future.

In consultation with the Free State Department of Education, five schools have been chosen to pilot the SITA Schools of Software Engineering. Besides Kopanong Secondary (where the initiative will be launched), they are Thabo-Vuyo Secondary in Rouxville; Lekgarietse Secondary in Welkom; Rebatla-Thuto Secondary in Koppies; and Mohaladitwe Secondary in Makwane, QwaQwa.

The schools were chosen for their track record of academic excellence despite depressed socio-economic backgrounds, for their location (in five different district municipalities), and for the exceptional work ethic of learners, educators, governing bodies and parents. Each school is a stellar reminder of what is achieved when community stakeholders collaborate and work together to achieve great things.

As per the specifications agreed with the Free State government, SITA is providing 40 computers per laboratory, connectivity, a curriculum, mentors and technical resources for the programme. The SITA School of Software Engineering will equip learners with software-development, coding and other ICT skills. Graduates will either be offered scholarships for tertiary education in an ICT-related field, or given internships at SITA, or assisted in enterprise development to establish small, medium or micro-sized enterprises.

The schools are the embodiment of President Ramaphosa's Thuma Mina call. SITA is proud of its association with each school, and has profound confidence in the example that each sets for a generation of educators, young people and parents.

This event will be the culmination of two years of hard work by SITA and the Free State government in their collaboration to respond to a National Development Plan mandate: create a digital society underpinned by the knowledge economy.

When MEC Makgoe inaugurates the School, Free State, SITA will also be responding to President Ramaphosa's call for digital transformation and to Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni's plea during his February 2019 budget speech to get South Africa ready for technology.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his State of the Nation Address on 7 February 2019 that South Africa was faced with "a stark choice" between "being overtaken by technological change or harnessing it to serve our developmental aspirations" – a choice between "entrenching inequality or creating shared prosperity through innovation".

Unless South Africans adapt to and understand "the nature of the profound change that is reshaping our world", the nation's promise will remain unfulfilled.

We're proud that SITA's new academy will be part of the mainstreaming of the ICT curriculum. We envisage further expansion as we continue to leverage our ICT capabilities to transform communities. A bonus is that learners will have fun while helping to find technological solutions to socio-economic problems.

SITA has previously donated fully resourced laboratories to schools. However, the SITA School of Software Engineering will also invest heavily in skills development to provide a career kickstart for continued ICT studies, starting businesses, or taking part in Learnerships at SITA.

Extended Reality expected to grow eightfold by 2022

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 02:54 AM PDT

Sozo Lab
Sozo Labs, a Stellenbosch based tech firm has invested in Extended Reality (XR). The company has engaged in the XR space for nearly three years, experimenting in each new iteration of technology. They applied these skills across a multitude of applications including data, property and environmental visualisation, as well as marketing experiences, game development, and education.

Extended Reality is a broad grouping of technologies that change the way we experience digital content. This encompasses all the Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies, enabling profoundly engaging experiences unimaginable a few years ago. From deeply immersive design, training and entertainment applications in VR, to informative or engaging digital overlays in AR, to integrated MR content that allows for digital and real-world interactions, the new realms of XR are set to change the way we experience the world.

While XR is already used in simulation (flight and military, among others), its usage is expected to dramatically increase within entertainment, museums and tourist attractions, education, and within the transformation of retail e-commerce, offering virtual shopping within various outlets.

Colin Payne, CEO of Sozo Labs, a part of the Alphawave Group, adds, "This presents global and local companies with a choice. Do they invest in the development of platforms that may be somewhat tired by 2022, or seize first-mover advantage as the innovators and owners of XR in their industry space? This next 12 months is the time to make that leap. Out of the ordinary brands really do see that, seeing the opportunity to develop and experience enhanced training or customer experience or even just generating publicity by being innovators in this new space."

"VR will take centre stage within the next year. Affordability has improved and is pitched to be the next upgrade on social media or mobile phone gaming, arguably waning in our voracious appetite for novelty, and needing to re-invent themselves perpetually," he says.

"Technology that was previously accessible to labs will soon be in homes and this has been worked on for years by these industry leaders. And the usage has dramatically shifted too – with price down to a few hundred dollars. Even headsets like the Samsung Gear VR that turn smartphones into virtual reality displays is already around $100."

Parent company CEO, Frans Meyer, concludes, "Alphawave Group has been building successful technology businesses over the past two decades, and has decided to invest in XR. Our goal is to understand the space and potential market opportunities by diving in and actually developing content and doing projects for customers. We're convinced the market will grow and the applications will become apparent. We're backing the team at Sozo Labs to lead this for us and look forward to seeing the growth as the real industry leaders step forward to assume first mover advantage."

Court refuses to sack Kogi House of Rep member

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 02:39 AM PDT

Court
A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a suit seeking to sack a member of the House of Representatives, Lawal Idris for allegedly forging his academic credentials.

In a judgement on Friday, Justice Taiwo Taiwo dismissed the suit filed by Okino Adeiza of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the grounds that the court was without jurisdiction to hear it.

Idris, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, won re-election at the last National Assembly election.

Adeiza, who contested the election on the platform of PDP, alleged in the suit, that Idris was not qualified to contest the election.
He claimed, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1264/2018, that Idris gave false personal information in the Form CF001 he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2015 and 2019.

The plaintiff claimed that Idris submitted forged National Diploma (ND) purportedly issued by the Yaba College of Technology Lagos to INEC in 2015 as his highest qualification.

Adeiza stated that, although Idris excluded the allegedly forged ND certificate from the documents he submitted for the 2019 election, he (Idris) also made false claim, in the Form CF001 he submitted for the last election, when he said he has never given false information to INEC in the past.

The plaintiff argued that, by allegedly submitting forged credentials to INEC in 2015 and making false claim in 2019 that he has never supplied false information to INEC in the past, Idris was no longer qualified to stand for election, and should be disqualified.

He listed the APC, INEC and Idris as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants.

Justice Taiwo, in the judgment on Friday, upheld the objections raised by the defendants about the competence of the suit; declined jurisdiction and dismissed it.

Justice Taiwo particularly, agreed with the lawyer to Idris, Abdul Ibrahim (SAN) that the suit was not only statute barred, it was caught by the twin legal doctrine of estopel and res judicata.

The judge noted that, after the 2015 elections, Adeiza had challenged Idris' eligibility up to the Court of Appeal, with the appellate court holding that he (Adeiza) failed to prove his claim of forgery against Idris.

Justice Taiwo said, since the Court of Appeal has held that the allegation of forgery was not proved in the post 2015 election litigation, it was wrong for Adeiza to seek to re-litigate an issue already decided by the Court of Appeal.

The judge also held that the suit offends the provision of Section 285(9) of the Constitution, having not been filed within 14 days after the APC submitted Idris' name to INEC as its candidate for the election.

"This suit, a pre-election matter was not commenced within 14 days after the submission of the 3rd def's name (Idris) to INEC as candidate of the 1st defendant (APC) as its candidate for the election.

"The judgement of the Court of Appeal has laid to rest the allegation of forgery, whether of age or certificates, raised against the 3rd defendant (Idris)," the judge said.

In holding that the suit was an abuse of court process, the judge said the case did not only abuse the process of the court process, having been filed mala fie (in bad faith), it was incompetent.

Justice Taiwo said, having pursued the issue of forgery against Idris up to the Court of Appeal (which is the last court in legislative election disputes) and failed, The plaintiff ought not to have come before the Federal High Court again on the same issue.

The judge said the right step was for Adeiza to ask the police to investigate and prosecute Idris on the allegation of forgery or obtain a fiat from the police to prosecute Idris for the alleged criminal offence of forgery.

LASIEC set for By-election in Surulere today

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 02:16 AM PDT

LASIEC
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will today conduct a by-election to fill the vacant Councillorship seat in Ward A ( Obele/Oniwala ) in Surulere Local Government Area of the State.

Briefing reporters yesterday, Its Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), said the commission had taken delivery of all election materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, required for the conduct of the election.

The commission, she said, had concluded the training of the personnel to be used for the conduct of the election.

Justice Phillips urged the election personnel to comply fully with the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of elections, warning that the commission would not tolerate any excuses for mistakes on the part of the election personnel.

According to her, the commission was working closely with the relevant security agencies, particularly the police, Department of State Service and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful election.

The LASIEC chief said two political parties – the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) and the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) are the only parties contesting for the councillorship seat which became vacant following the death of Razak Bello, who was the Councillor representing the Ward until his death.

Kazeem Bello is flying APC flag, while PDP fielded Abdulateef Bolaji Sanni.

Justice Phillips appealed to all eligible registered voters in the affected area to cast their votes for any candidate of their choice without any fear of molestation or attack, pointing that the by-election offered another opportunity for registered voters in the area to vote for the candidate they believed would give them effective representation in government and facilitate development to the community.

While promising that the people's votes will count, she explained that the period of the election would be between 9am and 3pm .

The procedure, she said, would be simultaneous accreditation and voting.

She commended the media for the support given to the commission, adding, however, that the media should also do more to enhance participation in the electoral process at all levels.

9th Senate: PDP plots Goje-Ekweremadu ticket

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 02:05 AM PDT

The horse-trading for the leadership of the 9th Senate intensified yesterday with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spearheading negotiation with some aspirants from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the office of the President of the Senate.

The PDP is plotting a joint ticket by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Sen. Danjuma Goje and the outgoing Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

But some leaders of PDP are suggesting either Sen. Ali Ndume-Ekweremadu mandate or Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-Ekweremadu ticket.

But most PDP senators-elect, especially loyalists of the outgoing Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, have been uncomfortable with any joint ticket with Ndume or Adamu.

Saraki and influential PDP leaders prefer a deal with Goje, who was once a father-figure in the opposition party before he defected to APC.

The outcome of the proposed alliance will pit the joint candidate for the Senate against the Senate Leader, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, who has been adopted by President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the PDP opted for another alliance to hijack the Senate leadership in order to have a high stake in the 9th National Assembly and secure a comfortable slot for the South-East which might be left out of power sharing at the centre by the APC.

The PDP was said to be interested in a succession plan which will "sustain the current checks and balances against the Buhari administration" as symbol ised by Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara.

According to findings made by our correspondent, Ekweremadu has been holding marathon meetings with some APC senators-elect, especially those rated as "rebellious and amenable", in order to get at least 56 simple majority out of 109 to enable the alliance to control the Senate.

It was learnt that the ongoing talks and negotiations have delayed the declaration of Goje for Senate Presidency. At a caucus meeting of the PDP, its senators and senators-elect, it was resolved that "all the senators-elect should stay together to study the situation until the time for the election of principal officers."

Some APC senators-elect, who spoke in confidence, confirmed that Ekweremadu has been reaching out to them "preaching peace, unity and the need to uphold the principle of separation of powers."

A reliable source, who spoke in confi dence, said: "The intrigues for the Office of the President of the Senate have heightened with the PDP seeking to retain its present stake in the upper chamber.

"Already, the party is plotting a joint ticket by Goje and Ekweremadu or Ndume/Adamu-Ekweremadu alliance. "We initially underrated the plot until Ekweremadu started meeting with APC Senators-elect under the guise of fighting for the upholding of the principle of separation of powers. "The opposition wants a repeat of 2015 power game in the Senate and it is determined to divide the APC.

"The reality is that PDP is desirous of a weighty slot in the Senate to be able to checkmate President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling APC.

"At the heart of it all also is the calculation for 2023. The opposition does not want to give APC a breathing space before the next elections.

"Also, the PDP seeks to accommodate the South-East in the National Assembly hierarchy since APC might not give the geopolitical zone a significant appointment." Asked of the status of talks, another top source added: "Most PDP leaders prefer Goje-Ekweremadu ticket. Those loyal to Saraki do not really support Ndume and Adamu because of fear of vengeance if they emerge the Senate President.

"Do not forget that Saraki's administration removed and suspended Ndume as Senate Leader. It is a wound that is yet to heal. To Saraki, the emergence of Ndume will be suicidal. "As for Adamu, he led the antagonistic Parliamentary Support Group (PSG) which coordinated many assaults on Saraki in the chamber. "Adamu only escaped suspension by a whisker because of his old age and long standing relationship with the late kingmaker of Kwara politics, Dr. Olusola Saraki. "The Goje-Ekweremadu option appears more realistic than others.

But Ndume and Adamu, who are still bitter with Buhari for not appreciating their loyalty, may play a spoiler's game." Upon enquiries, a PDP senator-elect simply said: "We had a caucus meeting last week and we resolved that all our senators-elect should stay together to study the situation until the time for the election of principal officers As at press time, the Ahmed Lawan camp, which got wind of the latest plot, was improving on its lobbying of PDP senators-elect.

A loyalist of Lawan said: "We are working round the clock to ensure that our candidate wins the leadership election in June. We have also gained more support from PDP camp too. "We are working hard to secure a comfortable figure for Lawan to emerge as Senate President. So far, there is no cause for alarm."

Nine Nigerians arrested in US for multi-million dollar fraud

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 01:42 AM PDT

Abike Dabiri
Nine Nigerians have been arrested in the United States of America for defrauding businesses and individuals of more than $3.5 million.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman, and Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) Special Agent-in-Charge of the Tampa, Florida, Field Office of U.S., James C. Spero, announced on Thursday that the suspects committed the fraud through business email compromises, a Russian oil scam, and a romance scam.

Named among the suspects are Oluwaseun Adelekan a.k.a. Sean Adelekan, Olalekan  Daramola, Solomon Aburekhanlen,  Gbenga Oyeneyin,Abiola Olajumoke, Temitope Omotayo, Bryan Eadie, Albert Lucas and Ademola Adebogun.

Each of the suspects faces a maximum potential sentence of 20 years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said: "As alleged, these defendants deployed three different email schemes to defraud their victims.

"The common denominator in all three schemes was the defendants' alleged fleecing of their victims through fictitious online identities.

"The schemes allegedly earned the defendants $3.5 million – and also arrests on federal felony charges."

HSI Special Agent-in-Charge James C. Spero said: "A transnational criminal organisation allegedly conducting illicit domestic and international wire fraud has been dismantled thanks to the hard work of HSI Tampa and Special Agents from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

"This case illustrates the unique investigative authority and international reach of HSI."

As alleged in their indictment, from at least in or about July 2016, up to and including the present, the defendants participated in a scheme to defraud businesses and individuals through several categories of false and misleading representations, including but not limited to:

  • Sending victims email messages that appeared to be, but were not, from legitimate business counterparties that included instructions to the victims to wire payment to those seemingly legitimate business counterparties into bank accounts that were actually under the control of, and/or maintained by, Adelekan, Daramola, Aburekhanlen, Oyeneyin, Olajumoke, Omotayo, Eadie, Lucas, and Adebogun (the "Business Email Compromise Scam");
  • Sending email messages and text messages to at least one victim offering an opportunity to invest in oil stored in Russian oil tank farms conditioned on that victim wiring upfront payments into bank accounts purportedly affiliated with the purported oil investment but actually opened by and under the control of Aburekhanlen, Olajumoke, and Oyeneyin (the "Russian Oil Scam"); and
  • Sending email messages and text messages to at least one victim from an individual (or individuals) purporting to be a female with romantic intentions toward the victim requesting, further to establishing a romantic relationship, the wiring of payment into a bank account under the control of Omotayo (the "Romance Scam").

Killings: Declare state of emergency in Zamfara, Katsina, others -Ohanaeze youths, Clark

Posted: 27 Apr 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Malachy Ugwummadu
With the wave of banditry in Zamfara, Kaduna and Katsina states not showing immediate signs of abating, Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clarke and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide have told the federal government that the only way out is the declaration of a state of emergency in the affected states.

Clarke and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide President, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, believe that since current efforts to stop the bloodshed have not succeeded, government should opt for state of emergency.

Isiguzoro told The Nation on the phone that a state of emergency is long overdue in the affected areas.

He said: "There should be no debate about declaring a state of emergency in those states because too many lives have been wasted already.
"We can't continue to do the same thing and expect a different result. If a state of emergency is declared in those states, it would not be the first in the country.

"It was once the case in Plateau State. So, if the present arrangement has failed, it is imperative for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency at least for three months.

"When normalcy returns, we can go back to the status quo. The people conniving with the criminals in all the affected places must be identified and severely punished."

On his part, Clarke, who also leads the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), said the widespread killings, arson and kidnapping in parts of the Northwest require urgent and sincere attention, as failure to tame them with speed could cause it to spread to other parts of the country.

He spoke from London also on the phone.

He said that political and traditional leaders in the affected states cannot claim to be blameless in the mayhem, adding that the federal government would succeed if neutral persons were saddled with the task of checking the banditry.

"Whatever is going on in those parts of Nigeria affects every part of this country, so you mustn't leave it as though this is a matter for the northern people alone, a matter for the federal government alone or for just the security forces alone," he said.

He added: "It concerns all of us because if we don't take time, it may spread to the whole country.

"You will recall that during Jonathan's time, I suggested the introduction of a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states; that the governors be removed from office for at least six months and give the military full authority to look into the place by appointing a military administrator.

"I suggested that, but Jonathan did not carry it out. The governors, even members of the National Assembly, misunderstood me. They said I just wanted the governors to be removed.

"Looking at what is going on in Zamfara, where accusation and counter-accusations are crossing between the parliamentarians and the governor and the emirs and so on, in this sort of circumstance, you need a neutral person who is versed in administration to take over the place and see that this is only responsible to the federal government; the security forces.

"That is my own position. It is not political. I believe that a state of emergency should be declared in those places like Katsina and Zamfara.

"You may not declare a state of emergency in all the states. Kaduna requires a state of emergency so that a neutral person can bring the Christians and the Moslems together.

"We should remove politics from it; this is a national issue."

Sack heads of security agencies, says Arewa Youth leader Shettima

But the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum Comrade Yerima Shettima and an Itsekiri leader Chief Edward Ekpoko do not see a state of emergency as the panacea to the problem.

The ACF says the solution lies in continuous onslaught against the bandits, while Shettima argues that a change of guards at the military high command looks more like it.

Shettima wants the heads of the various security agencies responsible for tackling the menace sacked and replaced with new people who have fresh ideas on how to solve the security challenges.

His words: "If those saddled with the task are not doing it well, sack them and bring in new people with fresh ideas.

"It is when you bring in new people and the problem fails to stop that you can consider declaring a state of emergency. It is then you can bring in an administrator to tackle the problem.

"Are we saying that those bandits are stronger than the Nigerian Armed Forces? Are we saying that they are stronger than the Nigerian Police or the DSS? It is not true!

"There are more to it. The government must have the will to deal with anybody who is found wanting. Has the government changed the heads of the security agencies saddled with the responsibility?

"Is it the governors that will take the guns and enter the bush to fight the bandits?

"You don't expect to see result until we define what we want to do and how to do it. People given security money should also be made to account for it, otherwise, we would never find a lasting solution to the problem."

Sustained onslaught is way out, not state of emergency – ACF

The Arewa Consultative Forum does not believe the solution lies in the declaration of a state of emergency.

It says government should rather continue to pound the bandits.

National Publicity Secretary of the forum, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, said: "We have always made our position known on this issue. For those calling for state of emergency, we don't think that is the solution.

"If you recall, state of emergency was last imposed during President Goodluck Jonathan's administration.

"But the question is: did it provide the desired result? No, it did not.

"So, we suggest that the Federal Government should deal with the situation the way it dealt with similar ones in Benue, Plateau and others.

"Like we have also said in our previous press releases, the government should equip the security forces to be able to face the challenges squarely."
