Osun Guber Update: Adeleke’s Nomination As PDP Candidate Nullifies By Court Over Certificate Forgery

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:17 AM PDT

Senator Ademola Adeleke

Senator Ademola Adeleke's nomination of  as candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the September 22, 2018 governorship election in Osun state has received a knock as .an Abuja High Court on Tuesday, nullified the his candidacy.

It could be recalled that few weeks to the poll, two chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Wahab Raheem and Adam Habeeb, dragged Adeleke to court accusing him of not possessing the requisite educational qualification (secondary school certificate), to contest for the office of Governor.

They prayed the court for an order to disqualify Adeleke from participating in the election.

Delivering judgment in the suit on Tuesday, Justice Oathman Musa annulled Adeleke's nomination on the grounds that Adeleke offended section 177 of the 1999 constitution as amended, which stipulates that candidates for the position of Governor must be educated up to secondary school level, Daily Post reports.

According to Justice Musa, while the court's findings showed that Adeleke entered secondary school in 1976, there was no record to show that he actually graduated, as his name was no longer seen in the school's register from 1980.

Justice Musa further stated that the result Adeleke attached to his form CF001 which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was fake, as it was found to be different from the one presented to the court by the principal of Ede Muslim High School, Ede in Osun State.

Adeleke's lawyer, Nathaniel Oke SAN, has faulted the judgment of Justice Musa, on the grounds that the judge erred in law by going out of his way to source for evidence to arrive at his "unjust conclusion".

Nigerian university student dies after he was reportedly sent out to get a haircut before writing his exams

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:00 PM PDT

It has been reported that a 4th-year Law student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, identified as Ezeh Goodluck, has died in an accident.

The young man reportedly after his faculty sent him home to get a haircut and produce his ID card before being allowed to sit for an exam with his course mates.

Ezeh Goodluck, aka Kasa, arrived at his faculty ready to sit for an exam with his coursemates on Monday, April 1, 2019.

Just before the exam, he uploaded his WhatsApp status. It was a good-humoured post and one that expressed hope that the exam will be in his favour.

However, according to LIB, he wasn't allowed into the exam hall. He was asked to go and get a haircut because his hair didn't meet faculty standard. He was also asked to produce his ID card before being allowed to sit for the exams.

In his haste to get home in time to produce his ID card and get a haircut, he mounted a bike. Unfortunately, he didn't arrive at his destination.

The tire of the bike blew and led to a fatal accident. The bike rider died on the spot while Goodluck was flung into a ditch.

He was still alive but unconscious and was rushed to the Chukwuemka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, formerly Anambra State University Teaching Hospital.

A source told LIB that staff at the hospital simply gave him drip and all but allegedly abandoned him for 4 hours. The source also claimed that at about 6 pm, a doctor told friends of the injured student that they didn't have the facilities needed to treat him and he needed to be transferred to a hospital in Nnewi. He was carried into the ambulance but gave up before they could make it to Nnewi.

A source who spoke to LIB claims the Dean of Law faculty later called the boy's mother to condole with her but he was not diplomatic about it. He reportedly told the grieving mother that her son should have taken the school's shuttle bus, instead of the bike which led to his death.

The mother, angered by her son's senseless death, asked why her son needed an ID card to be allowed in for his exams when he has been a student of the school for 4 years and should be easily identified by his lecturers and colleagues.

Students of the school who spoke with LIB lamented about the state of the school's Teaching Hospital and revealed that it's a death trap for students. They said multiple students have died there due to negligence and lack of medical equipment.

Seyi Shay allegedly shades Tiwa Savage on Kizz Daniel's #FuckYouChallenge
Over the past couple of days, social media has been flooded with various entries from several Nigerian artistes who have taken turns to participate in the viral music challenge by singer Kizz Daniel.

A number of music acts like Vector, Chinko Ekun, Dremo, Simi, Tiwa Savage and a host of some others, have shared their entries on their respective social media pages, and there is no doubt that, surely, talent is surplus in the Nigerian music industry.

Sensational singer Singer Seyi Shay has now hopped on the train of the trending music challenge as she recently took to her Instagram page with her own version.

As expected, the singing sensation comes through with her version, but we cannot help but notice some lines in her rendition that appears as if she may be throwing a shade at her colleague, Tiwa Savage.

The singer's lyric goes thus:

"You know I'm not Savage, I pay my bills."

In the second string of lyrics that followed, she added that her name could never come up in the debtors list that is set to be released by a popular Lagos club known as Escape.

"You no go find my name for the Escape o" she sang.

Some fans suggested at it was a shade directed at Tiwa in the comment section.

Wike vs Awara: This Is What Rivers People Must Do Now – Magnus Abe

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:22 PM PDT

Mr. Magnus Abe

Mr. Magnus Abe, the lawmaker representing Rivers South East in the National Assembly, has advised the people of the State ahead of the rerun election.

Abe said Rivers people must come out and fight for what they believe in, adding that he was ready to be one of those people that will fight to make the state better.

The lawmaker, who is a factional governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, also said that it was unfair to blame the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the culture of violence in the state elections.

Abe said this in a statement yesterday through his Media Aide, Parry Benson, where he advised Rivers people to fight for their future, Daily Post reports.

He reiterated that no individual can determine the future of Rivers State.

He said, "Politicians do not go into elections ready to accept the will of the people. They have pre-determined results and will do everything possible to subvert the process to create a particular result.

"If we turn around to blame INEC for all the challenges that come out of that kind of disposition toward the electoral process, it will be unfair.

"There is an election that comes up every four years in Nigeria and every adult in this country knows that there will be an election in 2019 and those who are qualified to vote were prepared long before the due date.

"How you reach out to these people and organise yourself to get the best of the goodwill of the people is the politics.

"That is the work of the political party. Where you don't do that and then you give instructions for people to go and vote in a particular manner, your followers could obey but the general population will not.

"If Nigerians, Rivers people want a better state and better life, they must come out and fight for what they believe in and that is what I think we ought to be doing.

"In several places in this country, when these elections were going on, citizens came out and stood their ground and at the end of the day, everybody submitted to what the citizens wanted.

"The future of Rivers is in the hands of Rivers people. They need to come together to decide what is right and how we can make things better in the state.

"It is not something that will happen by accident. People must come out and fight for it and I am ready to be one of those people that will fight for a better Rivers."

HP targets fraudulent manufacturers in East Africa

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:19 AM PDT

Hp
Alongside local African authorities, HP's ACF team have conducted two highly successful operations to stop the trade of counterfeit cartridges for HP printers across Uganda and Mozambique.

Firstly, In September and October 2018, HP's ACF team and local authorities raided several premises in the Maputo (Mozambique) and Kampala (Uganda) areas. In total, these anti-counterfeiting successes resulted in an impressive total of 33,000 illicit items seized.

Secondly, in January 2019, Ugandan authorities dismantled a criminal ring that had distributed counterfeit cartridges for HP printers destined for sale in several East African countries. Officials raided a distribution warehouse in the Kampala area that also served as a manufacturing site for counterfeits. The operation has resulted in the seizure of 77,000 illicit items, bringing the total number of contraband products seized through recent activity to over 110,000 items.

Counterfeiting is a crime. For users, such illegal imitations can cause a multitude of problems that can cause performance and reliability issues. Should your laptop break through the use of counterfeit accessories or components, you could also have issues with your manufacturer's warranty becoming void.

In contrast, original HP products are designed to meet HP's strict quality and reliability standards, based on a long history of inventing and testing.

"HP is proud of our continued partnership with local authorities in bringing counterfeiters to justice in Africa, and we commend the swift action of the local officials," said Tiago Drummond Borges, Vice-President Supplies Sales, Europe, Middle East & Africa, HP."This string of successful seizures is a true testament to the effectiveness of our Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud programme. Our work helps in apprehending and prosecuting counterfeiters who break the law."

Across EMEA over the last five years, approximately 12 million counterfeits and components have been seized by local authorities, supported by HP. HP has conducted over 4,500 audits and inspections (CPPAs and CDIs) of partners' stocks or suspicious deliveries for customers.

Through HP's Anti-Counterfeiting Fraud (ACF) Programme, the company actively educates its customers and partners to be vigilant against fake accessories and supplies. It also cooperates closely with local and global law enforcement authorities to detect and dismantle illegal operations that produce counterfeit HP components.

CiTi calls women to apply for the Top Tech Tools Business Programme

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:01 AM PDT

CiTi (the Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative), has partnered with the City of Cape Town to launch its fully-funded Top Tech Tools for Women in Business programme. Applications close on Friday 5 April.

Kicking off in April, the ten-week programme will support 25 women to future-proof their business for the digital economy. In the last four years, the programme has involved more than 200 entrepreneurs in Woodstock and Khayelitsha.

Aside from limited resources, many SMEs often don't have the capacity to upskill their teams. This is especially worrying for businesses that are solely operated by its founders including those who lack the industry 'know how' to take their professional journeys to the next level.

The Women in Business programme gives qualifying women the chance to flourish in relevant networks, and receive real-time coaching on business basics and more complicated solutions.

Since the start of the programme's outreach in 2015, 48% of graduates have seen productive changes in their companies that involve an increase in staff, sales, and social media following, improved internal communication and networking, knowledge gained and more effective spending.

In addition to exposure to strategic business structure strategies, students receive support to strengthen their confidence and resilience to help them deal with the challenges that arise along the way. "Having a positive state of mind, well-being and believing in your own abilities are critical in business success", says Marietjie Engelbrecht, CiTis head of communication. "Participants are exposed to a broader perspective – outside of the business element – to also appreciate and accept themselves. A strong support system is elemental in an efficient, sustainable business structure and CiTis programme leaders understand this."

Some of the topics the programme will address include Financial Management Systems, Cloud Computing, and Social Media Marketing. On graduating, the women will become members of CiTis alumni for ongoing access to relevant content, events and further support.

Applications are open to female founders and CEOs between the age of 25 – 50, who have a registered business for at least a year. Applicants must also be based in the Western Cape, have at least one staff member employed by their business and be available to attend weekly workshops every Thursday morning for the duration of the programme (April – June).

Other application criteria include supplying the following:

• Tax clearance

• CIPC Company registration

• Certified copy – Director's ID

• BBBEE Affidavit

• Company Profile

This followed Tuesday's adoption of the report and recommendations of the House committee on public account, which indicted the Kogi State High Court and Kogi Hajj Commission of financial breaches.

The House said that the Chief Judge could step aside to defend himself over the indictment by the auditor general of the state.

Ahmed Mohammed, Committee Chairman.

It would be recalled that Kogi judicial staff members have been on strike for close to six months over unresolved differences between the judicial arm and executive, arising from their alleged non submission to the staff payroll verification exercise embarked on by government late last year.

The judicial arm had earlier alleged of plans by Governor Yahaya Bello to remove Ajanah from office.

Zamfara APC Saga: INEC Discloses Fresh Decision On Election

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:42 AM PDT

The Nigeria Electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that the decision of the Supreme Court will determine the fate of those elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Zamfara State.

The electoral umpire said it will wait for the pronouncement of the Supreme Court before taking any decision on the primary elections of the party in the State.

The commission had withheld certificates of return of the state Governor-elect, Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu, following the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Sokoto, Daily Post reports.

However, the APC wrote the commission last week, saying that the Court of Appeal did not nullify their primary elections in the State.

But speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday, INEC's Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the commission was law-abiding.

According to him, "The Independent National Electoral Commission is a law-abiding institution. It is the policy of the commission to obey court orders and court decisions.

"The commission took the decision to exclude the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the list of nominated candidates on the grounds that the party did not conduct primary elections.

"The party has taken the matter to the Supreme Court and it is only rational and prudent to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court before proceeding.

"The commission took a cautionary approach in suspending further issuance of certificates of return to the members-elect of the state assembly, the deputy governor-elect and the governor-elect. The commission will abide by the decision of the Supreme Court on the matter.

"The commission does not have any interest in who becomes the governor of Zamfara State but is only interested in the processes and procedures leading to the declaration of results and issuance of certificates of return.

"We are confident that the Supreme Court will conclude the hearing of the matter and deliver its judgment before the inuguration of elected members of the national and state assemblies.

"We believe that the people of Zamfara State deserve to know who their governor and representatives are before the terminal date of this regime.

"The commission receives dozens of letters daily. The commission replies letters it receives but takes decisions based on the orders and judgments of courts.

"The commission studies the judgments and takes its decisions based on the judgements and orders and not based on the opinions and decisions of lawyers."

Sokoto: APC warns Tambuwal, PDP against attacks on supporters

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:39 AM PDT

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal
Sequel to what it described as untoward act of aggression, repression and intimidation by People's Democratic Party (PDP) hoodlums against its supporters in parts of the state, the Sokoto state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday challenged Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his party to clear the air if they are not the sponsors of the dastardly act.

APC added; "Anything in the contrary will only go to further confirm that the government is fully behind these dastardly actions and aiding and abetting them."

APC further stressed that the PDP administration in Sokoto state owe the peace loving people of the state explanations as to the arbitrary physical assault on civil servants and replacements by PDP hoodlums.

"Any silence would also confirm our apprehension and due concerns thus APC would be compelled to enforce the rights of its supporters."

Addressing an emergency press conference in Sokoto, the state Chairman of APC, Sadik Isah Achida who condemned and lamented over the sad development said the APC in the state remain perplexed and baffled on the nefarious acts meted on its teeming supporters and other electorates who love, cherish and respect the sound and noble ideals of the party.

"We will not fold our arms and allow such flagrant and dastardly attacks, acts of aggression and intimidation. We will not, even for a second, hesitate in allowing our supporters to use any available means to lawfully defend themselves and enforce their fundamental human rights.

"Nobody should flagrantly trample on these inalienable rights of our supporters", Achida vowed.

In the same vein he explained that the constitution has enshrined some undeniable and defendable rights to any law abiding, bonafide citizen of country. All Nigerians have equal rights and freedom of movement, right to live, right to practice one's religion, meaningful socio- economic transactions, right to belong to any political party and array of other enforceable rights among others enjoyable by all Nigerians.

The party chairman further pointed out that despite the PDP peace credentials that filled the airwaves , hoodlums keep parading themselves, caning and flogging people suspected and perceived to be APC supporters, claiming they were cleansing them for integration into the society.

"It is apt and desirable for the PDP to either confirm its complicity in these atrocities or deny as well bring the obnoxious activities to a halt and take necessary steps to apprehend the perpetrators and charge them to court."

According to Achida who raised among other critical questions "is the PDP government in Sokoto aware or not that people is being exorbitantly and arbitrarily levied before they are allowed to conduct commercial activities in our markets in towns and villages across the state? also noted that the people of Sokoto state have equal rights to enjoy all services by the three tiers of government, right to choose any political party and they have entrusted their mandate to the APC gubernatorial candidate but a day light robbery by PDP Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal stole the golden mandate which we see as temporary as it would soon be retrieved," Achida insisted.

"We are strongly calling on the state government and PDP to urgently call the perpetrators of these heinous attacks to order and doing otherwise is an imminent invitation to anarchy, which would not do anybody any good. A stitch in time saves nine," Achida cautioned.

Breaking: Court dismisses AAC’s suit against Rivers election

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:59 AM PDT

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit by the African Action Congress (AAC) and one other, querying the propriety of handling of the last governorship and State Assembly elections in Rivers State, particularly as it relates to its announcement of the results, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment on Tuesday said the since the case was election-related, it was appropriate for the plaintiffs to take their case before an election tribunal.

The Justice Ekwo declined jurisdiction and dismissed the case.

The suit, marked FHC/ ABJ/CS/303/2019,has AAC, Engr Biokpomabo Festus Awara and Pastor (Dr.) Ben-Gurion John Peter as plaintiffs, with INEC and the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
The plaintiffs noted INEC had earlier admitted that the election in Rivers State was marred with substantial violence that compromised the credibility of the entire process, and thereby suspended the election.

They added that without calling for a fresh election, INEC announced, via a press release, that it was now set to continue with the election from Wednesday, 20th March 20 19.

Details shortly‎.

'Fenty Effect' and why Rihanna will, once again, galvanise beauty for people of colour

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:16 AM PDT

Rihanna Fenty Beauty empire
As the Fenty Beauty empire grows to include skin care, we talk about the effect Fenty Beauty has had on the beauty industry and why it's more than just skin deep.

Rihanna has had unprecedented success with her Fenty Beauty makeup line. Created with promise of inclusion for all women and offering an unmatched offering of shades and colours, Fenty Beauty has revolutionised the global makeup industry and next, she's focusing on skin.

Rihanna began Fenty Beauty in late 2017 with the the hope of creating a makeup line that did exactly what it promised to do. Whereas many lines claimed to have diversity in mind, a lot of their product offerings fell short with black and brown women feeling grossly underrepresented.

lobal beauty brands, in particular from the luxury sector, where shamelessly lacking when it came to catering to the needs of people of colour.

Ima, 26, a PR executive and beauty aficionado says, ''I have always loved makeup but if I'm being honest, I have rarely felt 'seen'. My experience of makeup has been a series of trials and error. Even in high-end beauty campaigns, it feels like black women are completely excluded from the conversation despite having the buying power. I just want to look at a campaign and see a girl like me staring back, I don't think I'm asking for too much.''

The launch of Fenty Beauty left many beauty houses scrambling to expand their colour ranges in what has now come to be known as the 'Fenty Effect'. However. Fenty remains the originator and the favourite. The brand have marketed themselves as being a champion of inclusion and diversity and continue to be one the go-to for people of colour.

Elaine, 28, says, ''Fenty Beauty was the dawn of a new era from me. From the very start, I understood it and it felt like it was made just for me. Do you understand how special that is? Just for that, I will continue to support Rihanna in anything she does because she did this for US.''

Rihanna began Fenty Beauty in late 2017
Other brands, who have begun expanding their own lines as a knee-jerk reaction, have been accused of being performative and doing so only to increase their profit margins rather than actually caring about the representation of people of colour on the global beauty stage.

Brands like Dior, among others, who have began expanding their ranges, have been accused of not celebrating diversity but accommodating people of colour in a bid to keep up with an increasingly competitive industry, At some point, we have to question the integrity of these brands and ascertain whether they truly care about inclusion or whether they're using people of colour to make money. Fenty Beauty felt like the first brand that truly 'cared' and that's what drove its success.

Following the launch of Fenty, affordable beauty brand Make Up For Ever were quick to remind people that they already had a 40-shade foundation range since 2015 and what Fenty was doing was 'nothing new'. Always the queen of clapbacks, Rihanna's reminded them that although their range was in existence it was 'still ashy', suggesting that though their range existed, it failed to address the important nuances pertaining to black beauty including undertones.

Where Make Up For Ever failed, Fenty flourished with their iconic Pro Filt'r foundation which not only supported a wider range of skin tones- but also took into account that not all shades are equal and created that shades which appeared identical but had fundamental differences which made it easier for people to find the perfect shade for them.

Not only did Fenty Beauty excel in their shade selection for darker skin tones but were widely praised for including shades that included extremely light shades for people with albinism. Fenty Beauty was the first beauty brand to truly understand that the full spectrum and cater to it all.

According to We Are Ready, recent research from George Washington University showed that mercury and other potentially harmful ingredients are found in cosmetics products commonly marketed to African American, Latina and Asian women, and even small exposures to suspected toxic chemicals can lead to health problems, such as premature reproductive development in young girls, neurodevelopmental issues and cancer.

The truth is, diversity in beauty goes far beyond makeup and colour ranges. There needs to be a diversity push through every aspect of the production line. There need to be more people of colour involved in the process from the cosmetic chemists in the labs who understand the molecular differences of coloured skin to marketing and branding. Brand ambassadors for the brand also need to be relatable and representative of the people it appeals to.

This is why Fenty Skin is going to be another important milestone for the beauty industry, According to Business of Fashion who spoke to said Theresa Yee, a senior beauty analyst at WGSN, "Everyone wants that dewy, natural-looking glow today, and, to achieve that, these women need skincare that actually works for their skin texture. There is still a real gap in the market and a huge consumer demand for more inclusive products."

As someone who has proven that she understands issue people of colour face, Rihanna is bound to excel at skin care. We expect Fenty Skin to provide solutions to the more common issues that women with darker skin tones deal with including hyperpigmentation, differences in skin texture and acne scarring among others.

It seems Rihanna has sparked a seismic change in the beauty industry and we are entering a new phase of beauty that has space for everyone to explore their love of makeup and feel included in the conversation.

That Rihanna reign really won't let up.

Meet Emefa Smith, the woman styling your alté faves with her popular accessories line

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:05 AM PDT

The alté subculture has taken hold in Nigeria with many riding the wave as a means of self-expression.

It has borne a new sound, new aesthetic and new approaches to fashion. One person leading the charge when it comes to style is Ghanaian export, Emefa Smith.

In just a couple of years, Emefa has built a formidable brand, The Vintage Smith, that has become a firm favourite among the alté set. Stars like BOJ, Wavy the Creator, Teezee and photographer Stephen Tayo have been spotted in her designs and as she announces plans to expand her brand even further, we sat down with her to find out how she grew her label to cult-like status.

Entrepreneurship and attraction
Emefa Smith
Where most people choose the security of a 9-5 and do their business as a side hustle, Emefa chose to launch head first into the murky waters of entrepreneurship. ''I was just tired of working for people and working on people's dreams. I just felt like I had reached a point where I was fed up of building people's dreams and was ready to build my own.''

Emefa, a lover of fashion and with a very distinct sense of style herself, started her career in styling, working with artists like R2Bees, M.I Agbaga and ex-beauty queen Munachi Abii.

One would expect her foray into fashion to start with a clothing label but Emefa had other plans. ''Initially, when I came up with the idea, I wanted to start with clothes like everyone else. But then I realised that there was a gap in the market. Personally, I love sunglasses but I could only get sunglasses when I traveled. That was the only time that I could get sunglasses that I liked.

So when I went to New York in 2017, I had just quit my job. I was looking from the outside in, looking at Nigeria and Ghana and what we lacked and I realised that there was a huge gap for eyewear. I just took advantage of that and was like, I think this would be something that would be great to provide for people who actually want to look good without having to break the bank or having to travel.''

After her breakthrough, Emefa faced the next hurdle which was finding a suitable supplier and establishing a production line that worked. Often, this part is one of the most challenging for budding entrepreneurs.

With not much support, Emefa decided to go it alone. ''I didn't have any advice. Actually, the advice that I had was from people who actually didn't believe in me at all. I basically started off researching on my own and trying to come up with suppliers. So I found a supplier in China Town, New York, and that's how it started. I went to a trade-show in Las Vegas where I had access to all these suppliers. Then I came back to New York, followed up, and then that's when I got my supplier.''

Start-up statistics are daunting with research from the Small Business Association (SBA) showing between 30%-50% of small businesses fail within the first year.

From lack of adequate market research to poor financial planning and rigidity, many businesses don't make it out of the gate.

Bearing that in mind, the success The Vintage Smith has had in just a couple of years is outstanding but we were curious to know the challenges Emefa faced when she first began. ''I would say that would definitely be customers because not a lot of people were aware that I was selling stuff. So it started by word of mouth and BOJ from DRB was one of my first customers. From there, people started talking about my brand and people became more aware.''

The support of the music industry
Emefa's ability to penetrate so far into the music scene is fascinating with the majority of her customers being musicians and artists.

''I think it's because I used to work in music. I used to work in Chocolate City. Prior to that most of my friends were actually musicians, so that was an organic progression for the brand. It wasn't something that was strategically planned, it just happened naturally.''

Emefa has cornered the market when it comes to sunglasses and the goal of a business is to continue to grow and expand. We were curious to know the direction Emefa wanted to take and how she intended to get there.

''Well, I don't know if I want a physical store because I feel like the idea of like shopping has really transcended into shopping online. People like the ease and just being a home and having things being delivered to them. So I would rather focus on my solely online.

I don't have a website which is crazy but I feel like I've done pretty well for myself considering that Instagram has been the only channel I've used. It's been a combination of Instagram, pop- ups and word of mouth basically. However, I think that in the next couple of years, I would definitely like to have a fully functional website.''

The Vintage Smith is definitely a brand that has made use of the way we shop in Nigeria through pop-ups put together by like-minded people who want to give opportunities to young entrepreneurs. People have been forced to think outside of the box when it comes to retail and through pop-up culture, many brands have been giving much needed platforms.

The collaboration era
Emefa talks rather excitedly about how she sees the brand developing over the next 5 years and pop-ups are still very much a part of the vision.

''I definitely want to do pop-ups overseas, you know, just not focus on Africa. It's all about taking Africa to the world, you know, as cliche as that may sound. In the next five years I definitely want to be everywhere. I want to be doing stuff in London, New York, Paris, even South Africa because I have so many customers from all over the world and I want to give them the chance to have The Vintage Smith experience.''

For Emefa, collaboration is an integral part of her brand's future. Acknowledging the chances she has been given by others, she wants to pay it forward and connect with other creatives globally. ''I definitely want to visit like other places and connect with other creatives and other people that are interested in my stuff. The goal is to expand my reach, improve my distribution and just be everywhere. I'm definitely open to working with different creatives, I don't want to limit myself,''

We wonder if her collaborations will be limited to accessories or if we will finally see her branch into clothing and share her unique style with the world.

''With accessories, I'm just putting my foot through the door because really, what I'm passionate about is fashion. I just tested the waters with the eye-wear and now I'm doing the bags.''

The bags Emefa speaks of are bespoke, handmade beaded bags that have been spotted, dangling from the arms of the likes of Grace Ladoja MBE and TTYA founder Irene Agbontaen.

Though the have not been officially released, they are already the IT-bags for this year with the pre-orders stacking up. ''I definitely don't want to be a purely accessories brand, I would definitely love to do clothes and work with other designers on collections but I feel like everything is just about finding the right time you know. As time goes on. you grow, you learn more about the business. Further in the future, I definitely see myself doing more than just eye-wear accessories.''

For the culture
Emefa has been very vocal about the support she has received from the alté crowd who have championed her brand from the very beginning.

I wonder if she feels pigeon-holed by the label but Emefa insists she loves the new African style that has grown from the alté scene and how it has shaped her brand. ''I think it just like any other genre like punk or hip hop. So I feel like now, with this alté scene, people are identifying with that, It feels very African and it's something that they don't have to try too hard to achieve you know.

You don't have to go through great lengths to achieve a certain style and that's where I come in. I help these people achieve a certain look.I just found myself in that kind of genre of music and yes it has shaped me as a human being and as a brand. It's about how you present yourself so I would say that people would identify me as alté because all my friends are.''

Talking about personal style, Emefa's own is distinct. She often gets her own clothes made, drawing inspiration from the runway, social media and the looks she dreams up.

She explains that, although her style is quite trend-driven, she still doesn't want to wear the same pieces as everyone else and her eye for style ensures that she gets in there first. ''I can spot a trend from a mile away and I can tell that something is going to be big. It's my passion so it's always been like this. I can always tell when something's going to be big so I just end up wearing it before it's everywhere.''

Speaking about why she chooses to make most of her clothes instead of buying them, Emefa brings up the pertinent issue of sustainability and slow fashion.

Instead of plugging into the problematic fast fashion cycle, she prefers to empower African artisans. ''Being in Africa, having access to clothes is difficult as it is. It's easier for people that live abroad to go online and shop. But, we are in Africa and I feel like fashion now is really big on sustainability.

We're right here and there people that can actually make these things that we see with all these big brands.

So, I would rather give my money to these people and I can work with local people in order to achieve my looks. I can go to my local fabric store, take that fabric to my local seamstress and let her make something with it. I'm very big on the idea of 'made in Africa'.

I just don't understand why I should be giving my money to someone who doesn't care about me. I would much rather empower the people around me than give my money to a H&M for example.''

Finally, when asked to describe The Vintage Smith in 3 simple words, Emefa reflects and finally says ''Alté, edgy, cool''.

The reclamation of the word alté is fascinating to see. Whereas, it was used in a derogatory manner, people have flipped it around and wear it like a badge of pride. It seeps into every aspect of culture and has borne a new generation of creatives that are refusing to be bound by traditional standards of what it means to be an African.

Thanks to people like Emefa, culture pushers and style enablers, we are witnessing the rise of the new wave.
