Senate President Tussle: Senator Ndume Gets Thirty-Five APC Senators Backing As Lawan’s Fate Dangles

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 03:52 PM PDT

Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume,  seem to have secured the support of no fewer than thirty-five Senators from the APC, against the speculated adoption of Senator Ahmed Lawan by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to media reports, there are strong indications that are backing to clinch the seat of Senate President for the Ninth Assembly.

It was gathered that the lawmakers were angry with the leadership of the party over its decision to impose Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, without recourse to them.

The lawmakers, who pleaded anonymity, expressed disappointment at Lawan over alleged statement credited to him that all the APC State Governors have donated their Senators to him to ensure his victory, Daily Post reports.

The Senators-elect said, "We are not happy over claims by Lawan that APC governors have donated their Senators-elect to him in order to realise his Senate Presidency.

"Even they have gone ahead to share the juicy Committees to Senators-elect that are favourable to the imposition."

The lawmakers said they disliked attempts to intimidate and harass some of them with using the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC); adding that they have uncovered plans by the party to plant spies in the gallery of the chamber to monitor the elections.

The lawmakers rooting for Ndume are mostly drawn from the incoming Senators and a few former governors who feel slighted by the bullying tendencies of the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

A few of the lawmakers, who spoke to DAILY POST on the sideline of their induction exercise holding at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, asked the party to retrace its steps to avoid the pitfall of 2015 when it lost the seat of Deputy Senate Presidency to the main opposition.

This was as some lawmakers in opposition PDP like Former Governor of Benue State Gabriel Suswamm who already perceive Lawan as a symbol of the ruling APC and a willing tool for the executive give hint that APC might be in for another shocker.

It could be recalled that Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives,  recently at the induction exercise on Monday warned that leadership should not be imposed on the legislature.

He said that it would spell doom for the lawmakers if leadership was imposed, arguing that it makes legislative Chambers an appendage of the executive.

According to media reports, Morufu was caught early Tuesday at ATM points of one of the new generation banks beside the Ibadan zonal headquarters of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) on Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe.

The Media report stated that the suspect was caught when a passer-by saw him with a huge amount of money at the machine.

He added that Morufu who made some confessions after he was caught said he has a code he always input on the ATM to dispense without a card, Daily Post reports.

The eye witness, who drew the attention of others to the scene, explained that she became suspicious when she noticed the young man in dirty clothes was withdrawing huge amount from the ATM.

She said that the suspect has, however, been handed over to police from the Iyaganku division.

Most businesses struggle with implementing adequate data protection-study

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:47 AM PDT

Data Protection
Dell EMC announced the results of the third Global Data Protection Index indicating that, although most businesses worldwide now recognize the value of data, they continue to struggle with implementing adequate data protection.

Specifically, the Index uncovered an increase in the average amount of data managed – from 1.45 petabytes (PB) in 2016 to 9.70PB in 2018 – and a high awareness of the value of data.

The research, which surveyed 2,200 IT decision makers from both public and private organisations with 250 plus employees across 18 countries and 11 industries, provides a comprehensive understanding of the state of data protection and the maturity of data protection strategies.

In fact, 92 per cent of respondents realise the potential value of data and 36 per cent are already monetising their data. While this acknowledgement is positive, most respondents are struggling to properly protect their data. The combination of these factors is driving many of the survey's findings.

Disruption Incidents Are Costly

The sheer volume of data and its importance to business operations make data protection that much more challenging. Disruption incidents are occurring frequently, but more alarming is the increasing amount of irreversible data loss. More than three-quarters (76 per cent) of respondents globally experienced some type of disruption within a 12-month period, and 27 per cent were unable to recover data using their existing data protection solution – nearly double the amount (14 per cent) in 2016.

Coincidently, 76 per cent of respondents worldwide are also using at least two data protection vendors, which makes them 35 per cent more likely to experience some type of disruption during the same 12-month period, compared to those with a single vendor. Unplanned systems downtime was the most common type of disruption (43 per cent) for those using two or more vendors, followed by ransomware attack that prevented access to data (32 per cent) and data loss (29 per cent).

Although unplanned systems downtime is more prevalent, data loss is far more expensive. For example, those who encountered downtime experienced 20 hours of downtime on average in the last 12 months, costing $526,845, while those who lost data, lost 2.13 terabytes on average with a price tag of nearly $1 million. Additionally, many of those who experienced a disruption also indicated it had far-reaching business impacts from customer trust to brand equity to employee productivity, to name a few.

Not only does the amount of data lost increase the price, but so does the value of data itself. It's clear that organisations recognise this as 81 per cent said they take data protection more seriously for categories of data that have the greatest monetary value.

Challenges Surrounding Data Protection

While those classified as data protection "adopters" sprang forward by nearly 50 percentage points (from 9 per cent in 2016 to 57 per cent in 2018) and "leaders" increased 10 percentage points (from 2 percent in 2016 to 12 percent in 2018), most businesses are struggling to implement a solution that adequately suits their needs. The majority (95 per cent) of respondents face at least one challenge in relation to data protection. The top three challenges globally include:

The complexity of configuring and operating data protection software/hardware, and the ballooning costs of storing and managing backup copies due to rapid data growth tied for first at 46 per cent.
The lack of data protection solutions for emerging technologies ranked second at 45 per cent.
Ensuring compliance with regulations like GDPR ranked third at 41 per cent.
For those who are struggling to find adequate data protection solutions for newer technologies, more than half (51 per cent) said they could not find suitable data protection solutions for artificial intelligence and machine learning data, followed by cloud-native applications (47 per cent) and IoT (40 per cent).

The challenges presented by emerging technologies and the rapid growth of data are just beginning to take shape. As such, only 16 per cent believe their current data protection solutions will be able to meet all future business challenges.

Cloud Is Changing the Data Protection Landscape

According to the Global Data Protection Index, public cloud use has increased from 28 per cent of the total IT environment in respondents' organisations in 2016 to 40 per cent in 2018, on average. Nearly all (98 per cent) organisations using public cloud are also leveraging it as part of their data protection infrastructure. The top use cases for data protection within public cloud include:

Backup/snapshot services to protect workloads developed in public cloud using new application architectures (41 per cent).
Backup of on-premises workloads/data (41 per cent).
Protecting specific SaaS apps (40 percent).
Cloud-enabled versions of on-premises data protection software to protect public cloud workloads (40 per cent).
Backup/snapshot services to protect workloads developed in public cloud using legacy application architectures (38 per cent).
When considering data protection solutions in a public cloud environment, the growing data universe plays an especially critical role as indicated by 64 per cent of respondents who named scalability options as important. Specifically, 41 per cent cited the impact of data protection infrastructure or services required to protect at scale, while 40 per cent cited the ability to scale services as public cloud workloads increase.

Regulation Is an Impending Catalyst for Evolution

Data privacy regulations like the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are relatively new, and the true impact on the data industry has yet to be realised. However, it has quickly become a focal point as regulation compliance was ranked in the top three data protection challenges by 41 per cent of respondents.

Moreover, only 35 per cent felt very confident that their organisation's current data protection infrastructure and processes are compliant with regional regulations. That sentiment is beginning to translate into reality as 12 per cent of respondents whose organisation experienced data loss or unplanned downtime in the past 12 months reported paying punitive fines as a result.

Lenovo announces data centre portfolio upgrades

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:08 AM PDT

Lenovo Head-Office
Lenovo has announced a series of upgrades to its ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile data centre infrastructure portfolios, aligned with Intel's launch of the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with Intel Optane DC persistent memory modules.

Among the solutions included in the refresh is the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR950, the industry's first eight-socket server featuring Intel's new Optane DC persistent memory technology.

In today's business landscape, CIOs face many challenges: IT spend is increasing while the talent pool is shrinking, enterprises must remain relevant today while innovating for tomorrow, security is more important than ever before and the industry is evolving from a hardware purchase to consumption-based model. To help CIOs navigate this path and manage the ever-increasing amount of data they face, Lenovo is updating 15 ThinkSystem servers and five ThinkAgile appliances in the portfolio to include Intel's newest processors, providing double-digit increases in performance.

Additionally, with Intel Optane DC persistent memory, customers can experience 12.5 times faster recovery from planned or unplanned outages (from 50 minutes down to four minutes) and can process significantly more data in in-memory databases, making the solutions ideal for SAP HANA environments.

"Customers today need IT solutions that are built to handle a diverse set of applications and engineered to accelerate workloads for improved business outcomes. Lenovo's new ThinkSystem servers featuring Intel Optane DC persistent memory are revolutionizing how customers think about application use cases, particularly how they manage their large memory challenges and higher availability of their applications," said Kamran Amini, Vice President and General Manager, Data Center Infrastructure and Software-Defined Solutions at Lenovo Data Center Group. "These new Lenovo solutions with persistent memory allow for more data and virtual machines to be stored on a single platform, and for mission-critical applications like SAP HANA, they deliver much faster recovery of the data from a planned or unplanned outage. This helps reduce a customer's overall operating expenses and enables further resiliency within their IT environment."

"The amount of available data and its importance to business continues to skyrocket," said Lisa Spelman, Vice President and General Manager of Intel Xeon Processors and Data Center Marketing at Intel. "Workload optimized platforms equipped with 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and Intel Optane DC persistent memory are the tools customers require to thrive in this data-centric era. Intel and Lenovo closely collaborated to enable platforms with up to 8-sockets and over 30TB of memory to help our customers take on their biggest data challenges."

Customers and partners across many industries with wide-ranging workloads have been anticipating the new Lenovo solutions and are eager to deploy the systems.

"With our new ThinkSystem servers, research teams will be able to generate results faster, enabling new discoveries and breakthroughs," said Ian Fisk, Ph.D., Scientific Computing Core Co-Director at Simons Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides funding for research in mathematics and the basic sciences. "These new systems deliver even faster-processing speeds than previous generations. Lenovo's reputation as a leader in high-performance computing, and their ability to deliver the servers just days after the new Intel processors became commercially available were real differentiators to us in our selection process."

One industry in particular where faster processing speeds are imperative is financial services. In the financial markets, where datastreams can update millions of times per second, the ability to analyze large volumes of data fast enough to react to changing markets is essential. The STAC-M3 benchmark is an industry standard used to compare technology stacks suitable for managing financial time-series data. As part of today's refresh announcement, Lenovo – along with KX – is unveiling new record-breaking STAC-M3 benchmark results with its flagship ThinkSystem SR950 and SR650 servers featuring Intel Optane DC persistent memory.

"Over the past few months Lenovo, Intel and Kx have used Intel Optane technology to set several new STAC-M3 records for systems running kdb+ on a single server," said Peter Lankford, Founder and Director, STAC®. "Now, the baseline STAC-M3 results from Lenovo servers using Intel Optane DC persistent memory have set new records in 11 of 17 benchmarks for kdb+ systems using a 2-socket server and 9 of 17 benchmarks for kdb+ systems using a 4-socket server. In one specific example, the calculation of market statistics that used to take more than half a second on a 2-socket kdb+ system now takes less than 75 milliseconds on the new solution—a speed acceleration of more than 7x."

"Today's STAC-M3 results represent significant improvement for customers demanding higher performance with their in-memory trade analytics with Kx. What will be of particular interest to our customers is that we gained these improvements without making any structural changes to our code. We simply took advantage of the Intel Optane DC persistent memory being used to hold persisted historical data," said Glenn Wright, Senior Systems Architect at Kx. "The kdb+ database, combined with Intel Optane DC persistent memory and Lenovo ThinkSystem servers, again produced record-breaking results with the I/O-intensive and compute-intensive STAC-M3 benchmark, setting a new set of expectations for performance."

In addition to the new ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile portfolio additions, Lenovo is also developing a series of engineered solutions designed specifically for key workloads. Three of these (SAP HANA, Microsoft SQL Server and Red Hat OpenShift Containers) will be verified by Intel as Intel® Select Solutions, taking advantage of the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor, signifying superior workload performance, ease of deployment and simplified evaluation. Lenovo continues to be the industry leader in this program, offering more Intel Select Solutions than any other vendor. In the coming months, Lenovo also expects to introduce additional Intel Select Solutions utilizing the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor including VMware vSAN, Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI), Blockchain Hyperledger Fabric, & Microsoft Azure Stack HCI.

Opera launches the first desktopbrowser ready for Web3

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:00 AM PDT

Opera launched the newest Opera browser for Mac, Windows and Linux now includes a Crypto Wallet, Web 3 explorer and a free VPN.

The new feature lets people make transactions and interact with the blockchain-based Internet of the future, also known as Web 3.

With Opera 60 (codenamed Reborn 3), Opera seeks to improve the quality of people's digital lives through increased privacy and security features, as well as a new design of the browser's interface. By also providing a free browser VPN, Opera helps users stay safe and in control of their browsing.

"The Web has transformed our lives. We are now continuously online. But the more time we spend online, the more we need tools that help us control the security and privacy of our digital lives," said Krystian Kolondra, EVP at Opera, Head of Browsers. "With this major upgrade, we are taking the first step into Web 3, the new Web, where users are in control. We believe every browser in 2019 should be Web 3-ready."

Web 3 is the Web of the future

Web 3 is the blockchain-based Internet of the future. Starting today, users can type in the address of a Web 3 application into the address bar of the Opera computer browser and they will be able to explore Web 3.

"Blockchain technologies bring the power and control back to the people," said Kolondra. "They can securely sign transactions and identify themselves to websites, without unnecessarily oversharing their data."

Browse Web 3 on your PC, sign transactions with your smartphone

The Crypto Wallet in the Opera computer browser syncs with the Crypto Wallet in the Opera browser for Android. This means the wallet keys never leave the users' smartphones. In practice, whenever they need to identify themselves to a Web 3 website or sign a transaction on the blockchain, they get a notification on their smartphone. They can confirm it in the same way they unlock their system, using for example Face ID or fingerprint.

"Blockchain technology has evolved from just storing funds or speculation into a technology which will shape the Internet of tomorrow," Kolondra adds. "We decided to speed up the development of Web 3 by opening all our browsers across all operating systems to it. This makes Opera the first major browser developer to do so."

The Crypto Wallet feature is planned to also be added to Opera's iOs browser, Opera Touch, soon.

A faster VPN service for more security and privacy

The demand for VPN services keeps growing. Currently, one-third of VPN users around the globe use this solution to stay more anonymous on the Web. Opera is the only browser maker to provide a fast and free browser VPN.

The unlimited browser VPN enhances users' online privacy and improves their security when using public networks they don't trust.

The browser VPN establishes a secure, encrypted tunnel which protects users' data from third parties and hides their geographical location from websites. The browser VPN service is also a no-log service, which means that the VPN servers do not log and retain any activity data, all to protect users' privacy.

New design makes Opera the perfect frame for the Web

With a quarter of our lives spent online, the quality of the applications we use plays a central role. People spend hours every day interacting with the Web through their browsers. Opera believes a browser should provide a perfect frame for the Web, the same way a picture frame enhances a viewer's experience of a painting.

In the new version of the Opera browser, the new borderless design without dividing lines between sections lets people browse calmly and unhindered by unnecessary distractions. Web content takes centre stage.

The browser also now has two distinct themes, light and dark, which are inspired by high-key and low-key lighting photography, where the goals are to maximize or minimize the amount of light in a photo while still retaining contrast. Depending on the mood, setting or the content they are viewing, people are in control of how they frame Web content.

Opera is the new standard of browsing

By giving users a beautiful, distraction-free setting to experience the Web, an increased level of privacy, as well as access to the Internet of the future, Opera believes it is giving users the perfect tool to control and enjoy the digital aspect of their lives.

To depict this, the company has created a short science fiction film, in which a woman travels through a futuristic world in search of regaining control. You can watch it here. The Opera browser also features two special edition themes inspired by the film.

Group urges INEC to complete collation of results in Imo North Senatorial District

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 10:53 AM PDT

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA), a civil society organisation, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do the right thing by completing the collation of results and make a declaration and return a winner in Imo North Senatorial District.

The Returning Officer on 23rd February declared the senatorial election in the zone inconclusive.

The group urged INEC to conduct elections in the two local government areas out of the six in the district.

It knocked Senator Benjamin Uwajimogu, for parading himself as winner of the elections, alleging that he printed his own result sheets, entered figures into the result sheets and parades those figures as having returned him as elected.

The Legal and Communications Director of CTA, Mr. Ohazuruike Tochukwu, disclosed this during a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that the Returning Officer, Prof. Donatus Ohajianya, was conscripted by Senator Uwajimogu to announce the results entered in the fake sheets and declare him winner.

He said: "Senator Uwajimogu claims he won an election yet neither he nor his agent is in possession of the result sheet upon which he claims victory.

"He only got the Returning Officer to join him in making the claim that there was a return. No other political party has a result. No security agency has the result.

"Indeed, Nigerians must know that while the duplicate result sheets INEC used in the National Legislative elections were blue in colour, the fake one printed by Senator Uwajimogu were pink in colour.

"How could it only be the Imo North Senatorial District that would have a different colour of duplicate copies?

"When the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner summoned stakeholders in the Senatorial District to a meeting to probe into these allegations, the Senator got faceless groups to threaten the security of the lives and property of the Commission and its staff.

"He tried to blackmail the REC to overlook the electoral crime committed and forward his name to Abuja for presentation of his Certificate of Return.

"A Senator that should be under Police investigations for forging INEC result sheets and presenting same as genuine when he knew they were obviously fake is now the one sponsoring faceless groups to put pressure and malign INEC to present him with a Certificate of Return."

CTA called on the INEC to make an official report to the Inspector General of Police calling for criminal investigation and prosecution of Senator Uwajimogu and Prof. Donatus O. Ohajianya.

It asked the accused Senator to: Show Nigerians a copy of the Result with which he says he won the Imo North Senatorial District election; show Nigerians a video of the Returning Officer declaring him as the winner of the election as he claims even if from a phone; he should disclose to Nigerians why the official result sheet for the election does not contain any entries made for Ehime Mbano and Isiala Mbano Local Government Areas as the Returning Officer was yet to make the entries into them.

"INEC should in this circumstance do the only right thing which is to complete the collation of results and make a declaration and return a winner.

"INEC should know that where this type of criminal act is allowed to go unpunished, that politicians will in subsequent elections print their own result sheets and then struggle for who the Returning Officer will declare his own.

"It will permanently destroy the credibility and sanctity of our elections. This evil introduced by this Senator must be nipped in the bud," he said.

CTA urged INEC to make the findings of the Committee set up to look into the matter with a view to ascertaining the veracity or otherwise of allegations of misconduct in the election public so that Nigerians will understand and appreciate what it has done.

Kalu denies nominating brother, cousin for minister

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 08:37 AM PDT

Orji  Kalu
The Senator-elect for Abia North, Orji Kalu, has debunked rumours that he nominated his younger brother Mascot Kalu and cousin Dr Madukwe Ukaegbu for minister.

A statement yesterday from Kalu's media office urged the public to disregard the false news. It described it as the handiwork of mischief makers and political jobbers who are envious of the APC's growing popularity in Abia State.

The statement reads: "We condemn the news that Dr Orji Kalu has nominated his brother Mascot Kalu and cousin Madukwe Ukaegbu for ministerial appointment.

"The fake news is another attempt by political jobbers to score cheap political points. We advise the management of the online platform which started the spread to apologise within seven days otherwise face the wrath of the law."

The statement also urged members of the APC to be wary of paid agents of the opposition, saying Kalu will not lose sleep over the antics of failed politicians.

The party has dissociated itself from moves by President Muhammadu Buhari to re-appoint Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah, current Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, as a minister.

The party, which accused Enelamah of apathy towards its activities in the last three years, called on the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to ensure that Abia gets a minister who is committed to the party's  interest and growth in the next Federal Cabinet.

The Publicity Secretary, Comrade Benedict Godson, who addressed reporters, said most of the problems faced by the party during the last election were due to Enelamah's non-commitment and lackadaisical approach to its issues.

He said: "We have a minister on paper but nobody feels his impact. Throughout the campaigns, he showed no interest. He should help  build this party, but he has instead remained unconcerned and lackadaisical. He's practically not an APC member.

"Now he is being projected to return as a minister which should not be so. We disown him because he's a saboteur to our party here in Abia. His attitude is serving the interest of the opposition.

"We call for his immediate removal. The APC is too big with many qualified members for us to be appointing non-members. Enelamah is not a member of our party and should not be appointed as a minister again…."

He said the majority of the injured persons are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (Bida).

Ekiti employs marshals to enforce grazing law

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 08:10 AM PDT

Kayode Fayemi
The Ekiti State government has employed marshals to enforce the Anti-Grazing Law 2016 and prevent farmers-herders clashes across the 16 local government areas.

Speaking at the inauguration of the officers on yesterday, the Marshal Coordinator, Sola Durodola, urged them to perform their assignment with utmost sense of responsibility.

Durodola said the marshals are vested with the power to ensure that herders comply with the law that regulates grazing within the hours allowed by law and restriction of their movement.

He said government would not allow destruction of farmlands and farm produce through unrestricted grazing and attacks on farmers and other law-abiding citizens.

Durodola also urged the marshals to monitor what he described as some nefarious activities of loggers in the forest.

He regretted that illegal felling of economic trees in the forest has robbed the state government of huge revenues that would have been used to the benefit of the people.

The coordinator warned the newly recruited marshals against involvement in shady deals and corrupt practices capable of jeopardising the mandate of the agency.

Durodola stressed that officer caught in sharp practices would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Some of the newly recruited marshals, while speaking with reporters, pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them and work in line with the mandate of the agency.

FG orders two additional coaches for Abuja-Kaduna route

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:50 AM PDT

Rotimi Amaechi
The Federal Government has ordered two additional coaches for the Abuja-Kaduna rail service route to solve the passenger's upsurge.

Mr Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, gave the directive on Monday during the monthly inspection of the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan rail line at Ologueru, Ibadan.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there was an upsurge of passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna train service due to the activities of kidnappers along the Abuja-Kaduna road.

Amaechi said the Nigerian Railway Corporation would move two additional coaches from Itakpe-Warri rail lines to that route.

He also warned that staff caught in illegal sales of tickets would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

"We are going there to arrest anyone caught up with tickets racketeering. The long queue at that axis is because coaches are not enough.

"The reason we bought those coaches was for people to sit down. But people are standing, they shouldn't stand. But, I have directed that we should move two coaches from Itakpe-Warri to Kaduna-Abuja. Today is the first day that I will be giving this directive.

"The first directive I gave was to move two coaches from Itakpe-Warri to Lagos. When we saw the problem today, I told the MD, to move two coaches to Kaduna from Itakpe-Warri because, there are no much passengers in that axis," he said.
Amaechi stated that it would be difficult to manage and control passengers standing in the train because of the upsurge.

"The long term plan is that we are going to China between 24th and 30th to inspect the new coaches and locomotives we are buying for Lagos-Ibadan.

"We may be under pressure to put that on the Abuja-Kaduna route and if we do that, that would reduce the pressure at the moment, when there are more coaches and locomotives, the pressure will cool down," he said.

Amaechi said that until there is a connection between Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri to Lokoja and Abuja that is when more passengers would use the train on that axis.

"The plan is on for the connectivity from Warri-Itakpe-Lokoja and we are talking to someone who wants to build a park at Itakpe to carry passengers by road to Abuja, pending when we get approval and funding to link Abuja to Itakpe."

Oil hits five-month high above $71 on Libyan supply threat

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:27 AM PDT

Oil hit a five-month high above 71 dollars a barrel on Tuesday, supported by concern that violence in Libya could further tighten supply already squeezed by OPEC cuts and U.S. sanctions on Iran and Venezuela.

International benchmark Brent futures hit their strongest level since last November at 71.34 dollars per barrel, before easing to 70.99 dollars per barrel by 0700 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures also hit a November 2018 high, at 64.77 dollars per barrel, before easing to 64.42 dollars per barrel.

Oil markets have tightened this year as the United States imposed sanctions on oil exporters Iran and Venezuela while the producer club of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has been withholding supply to prop up prices.

Brent and WTI futures have risen by 40 per cent and 30 per cent respectively since the start of the year.

Goldman Sachs, an American multinational investment bank and financial services company, said an oil supply deficit had opened up early this year.

"We expect the drivers of this deficit to persist through 2Q19" due to a shock and awe implementation of the OPEC cuts," the U.S. bank said in a note.

Goldman said it expected Brent to average 72.50 dollars per barrel during the second quarter, up from a previous forecast of 65 dollars per barrel.

Prices have been further lifted this week by escalating violence in Libya, a significant supplier of oil to Europe, which produced around 1.1 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude in March.

Eastern forces on Monday were advancing on the Libyan capital Tripoli in the latest of a cycle of warfare since Muammar Gaddafi's fall in 2011, with a warplane attacking the city's functioning airport.

‘I won’t challenge result of Lagos guber poll’

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:51 AM PDT

Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) says he will not contest the outcome of the governorship election in the state but prepare for the next election.

Gbadamosi, a real estate mogul, told newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos that his decision was rooted in him having no confidence in the electoral system.

He said: "My decision is to wait and contest the next election and hopefully, the votes will count then.

"I agree that the election in the state was an absolute fraud and a sham with many instances of open multiple voting recorded in places like Ikorodu, Lagos Island. However, I do not have any more resources to waste on a process in which I have no confidence.

"We keep learning and I believe that the will of the people will surely prevail in future elections in the state."

He also claimed that the fraud was carried out by known persons going from one polling unit to another, openly bearing firearms of all kinds.

Gbadamosi, however, advised INEC to put its house in order to forestall most of the anomalies witnessed in the 2019 general elections in the future elections.

He stressed the need to prosecute all those involved in electoral malpractices in 2019 general elections to serve as deterrent to others.

The ADP candidate urged the incoming 9th National Assembly to come up with stiffer penalty for electoral offenders, to ensure much better polls in future.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Mr Owolabi Salis, the Lagos state governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has, however, approached the state Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the victory of Sanwo-Olu, followed by Mr Fagbemi Awamari, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

The two petitioners prayed the tribunal to upturn the results of the March 9 governorship election, claiming that the election was marred by voter intimidation, vote-buying and multiple voting, adding that Sanwo-Olu was not fit to contest the 2019 governorship election.

The candidates also sought a declaration of the tribunal that, the pronouncement of Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the governorship election was null and void and be set aside, based on the gross electoral fraud and/or gross electoral misconduct that characterised the governorship election in the state.

I’ll reclaim my mandate – Mohammed Sani Musa

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:26 AM PDT

The Senator-elect for Niger East Senatorial district, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Musa has declared that he will reclaim his mandate at the Supreme Court after the Appeal Court judgment upheld the Appeal filed by Senator David Umaru against his nomination by the APC in the National Assembly elections.

He expressed his readiness to see the case to a logical conclusion at the Supreme Court.

The Appeal Court on Monday ruled that Senator David Umaru is the Senatorial candidate of the APC and should be recognised as such.

In a press statement, Musa said that his mandate cannot be stolen because he polled the highest valid votes castes during the APC primaries held in the state.
He declared that the appeal court ruling cannot stand stating that it is an aberration of what justice entails.

"The appeal court ruling today cannot stand; it is a miscarriage of justice and a complete aberration to what justice entails.

"I have no doubt in my mind that the apex court in the land will right the wrong temporarily done to my mandate by the lower court", the senator-elect said.

Lagos lawmaker decries state of Badagry road

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Badagry Lagos
Mr Setonji David, a member of Lagos State House of Assembly, on Tuesday decried the state of Badagry road, saying the road was too bad, considering challenges it posed to people in the area.

David, representing Badagry Constituency II,on the platform of the APC , disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, Badagry road looks like it is cut off from Lagos state while posing numerous challenges people in the area faced using the road.

The lawmaker, who also expressed dissatisfaction over shortage of schools in the area, called on Federal and state government to look into the plight of the residents with a view to helping them.

"Our road network is in shamble. Lagos-Badagry expressway is in total mess. If you take a walk for few hours to come to Badagry you will be amazed with the state of our roads.

"Although, the contract for the road has been awarded, I am just appealing to the contractor and the government at the federal level to expedite action on the reconstruction of that road.

"It is as if we are cut off from Lagos state, the state of the road is in shamble that is the truth of the matter.

" The raining season is fast approaching; I don't know what will become of that place when rain starts,'' David who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development said.

He said that the area also needed more primary and secondary schools to help reduce the kilometres school children trekked, each day, to access school.

"I know of pupils trekking for 5kms, 3kms and 2kms in my constituency before they can access schools.

"So we don't have enough primary schools, we don't have enough secondary schools. These are issues people can see. Some of these schools are not even in good state. The few ones we have need to be rehabilitated. We are pleading with government at the state and federal levels to do something.''

David said that the pains of residents of the area were passing through were better imagined than experienced.

The law maker, who described good infrastructure as the beginning of progress of any society, noted that commuters spent about three or four hours to get to Badagry from Lagos instead of 30 minutes or 45 minutes.

He, however, expressed optimism that the incoming administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu would address the plight of the people of Badagry.

David urged the Federal Government to redouble efforts in addressing inadequate power supply in the country to reduce youth unemployment.

According to him, the major problem confronting Nigeria is inadequate power supply, adding that so many people cannot work because there is no power.

"If we can have constant supply of electricity in this country, I want to assure you that, half of our unemployed youths would be engaged in viable jobs.

Xenophobia: Two Nigerians stabbed to death in South Africa

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:52 AM PDT

Xenophobia
The death toll of Nigerians killed in South Africa has continued to rise with another two being the latest victims in ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners in that country.

It was learnt that the latest victims – Bonny Iwuoha and Goziem Akpenyi – were stabbed to death during xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg and Cape Town on April 5 and April 6.

The Assistant Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Union in South Africa (NUSA), Odefa Ikele, confirmed the killings in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from Johannesburg on Monday.

Ikele said: "The Nigerian community lost two citizens to gruesome murders over the weekend. Mr Bonny Iwuoha, 48, from Ihitte/Uboma in Imo State, was stabbed to death at about 11:45pm on April 6, in Johannesburg South.

"We gathered that his assailants followed him from 152 Hay Street Turffontein, and thereafter, stabbed and killed him in front of his gate at Turf Road, Turffontein.

"The killing was witnessed by Mr Izochukwu Nwokocha, also known as, Nwa Father," he said.

Ikele said the killing had been reported and a case of murder opened at Booysens Police Station in Johannesburg South.

He said that another Nigerian, Goziem Akpenyi, also lost his life in similar circumstance on April 5.
The NUSA spokesman said: "Akpenyi was allegedly stabbed to death by three unknown coloured South African men after an argument with the deceased.

"The incident took place at Bellville Stadium parking lot in Cape Town at about 1 p.m. on Friday, April 5.

"These latest killings add to four other Nigerians who were shot dead in March. Three of the victims were murdered in Sunnyside, Pretoria and one in Balfour Park, Johannesburg."

Ikele said that NUSA was concerned over the incessant killings of Nigerians and worried that the perpetrators had not been brought to book.

According to him, the arrest and prosecution of the culprits by the South African Police would put to a stop the daily killings of Nigerians.

"We call on the Nigerian Government to impress on their South African counterpart that the killings have to be investigated and the culprits prosecuted," he appealed.

Nigeria’s Economy Is Slipping Says World Bank

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:21 AM PDT

World Bank

The World Bank Group, on Monday, said Nigeria's economy has performed below par since 1995.

In a classification of growth performance included in the 14th edition of Africa's Pulse, Nigeria was ranked in the bottom tercile alongside Angola, South Africa and 16 other countries saying these economies did not show any progress in their growth performance.

"These countries did not show any progress in their economic performance from 1995–2008 to 2015–18," the report read.

Explaining the methodology used in the classification, the report said: "The taxonomy compares the average annual GDP growth rates during 1995–2008 and 2015–18 against predetermined thresholds.

"These thresholds correspond to the bottom and top terciles of the annual average growth rates across 44 Sub-Saharan African countries between 1995 and 2008 (that is, 3.5 and 5.4 percent, respectively).

"If a country's economic performance declined from 1995–2008 to 2015–18, the country is categorized in the bottom tercile, which includes "falling behind" and "slipping."

"If a country's growth rate remained invariant over time, between 3.5 and 5.4 percent in both periods, it is categorized in the middle tercile (or "stuck in the middle").

"If a country's economic performance improved from 1995–2008 to 2015–18, with a growth of more than 5.4 percent per year, the country is categorized in the top tercile, which includes the "improved" and "established" groups."

According to the report, the indices used were:

- Convergence, as proxied by the level of income per capita of the countries in each tercile
- Structural transformation, as captured by sectoral value-added share and sectoral employment share
- Capital flows (aggregate value and composition)
- Level and composition of public sector indebtedness, as captured by: (i) the general government gross debt and its currency composition, and (ii) the outstanding external public debt (and its composition, by creditor)
- Governance indicators, namely, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, control of corruption, voice and accountability, political stability, and absence of violence and rule of law.

The World Bank also cut its growth projection for Nigeria from 2.2% to 2.1%, saying policy distortions and stagnant oil production levels limit investments.

"Growth in Nigeria is projected to rise from 1.9 percent in 2018 to 2.1 percent in 2019 (0.1 percentage point lower than last October's forecast)," the Bretton Wood institution said.

"This modest expansion reflects stagnant oil production, as regulatory uncertainty limits investment in the oil sector, while non-oil economic activity is held back by high inflation, policy distortions, and infrastructure constraints.

"Growth is projected to rise slightly to 2.2 percent in 2020 and reach 2.4 percent in 2021, as improving financing conditions help boost investment.

"In Nigeria, although the manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs remained above the neutral 50-point mark—which denotes expansion—they fell further in February, due to weaker rises in output and new sales orders across firms.

"Household consumption in Nigeria has remained subdued, while multiple exchange rates, foreign exchange restrictions, low private sector credit growth, and infrastructure constraints have continued to weigh on private investment."

In a chat with journalists on Monday, Isaac Okorafor, spokesperson of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said the bank has shown ingenuity in managing the economy.

"You know the crisis that we've faced in the past three years. The bank has shown ingenuity in managing the situation and ensuring that everything is stable."

Thugs Hired By Wife Beat Husband To Death For Slapping Her

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 04:59 AM PDT

Husband dies following beating by thugs hired by wife to beat him for slapping her. This was contained in a story shared by one Bernard Ufuoma, who is said to be a friend to the deceased.

Below is the full story:
My friend and Pharmacist allegedly killed by the wife.

Alloy my amiable friend and health provider is dead. I met Alloy in 2009 when I moved to the Oyigbo Expressway axis of Port Harcourt and we were friends at first sight. Alloy is from Eheme Mbano and the owner of the biggest pharmacy at the Oyigbo Expressway axis. I can remember vividly our first day of meeting. I had a stubborn cough and have been to the Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital but was still coughing. Alloy listened to the dry irritating cough and prescribed Beehive Honey cough syrup and some antibiotics and I was relieved.

Alloy and I became friends and over the years I bought my drugs and toiletries from him and we hanged out with a bottle of wine and pepper soup from time to time.

Alloy is blessed with an affable wife and four beautiful kids. He's quite comfortable and travels abroad several times a year for fun and business.

Trouble started when Alloy's older sister had accommodation crisis and she had to move in with the Alloys. Alloy's wife vehemently refused that the sister stay in the guest house. Alloy's house is a three bedroom bungalow with a two bedroom guest house behind. The guest house is vacant but his wife insisted that the sister and kids should keep their properties there but sleep in the sitting room of the bungalow.

Alloy pleaded with her to allow the sister stay in the guest house but the wife refused insisting that staying in the guest house would make her stay permanently with them and that sleeping in the living room will make her aware she's a guest.

Alloy registered the wife in a gym as she was getting out of shape and the schedule was three days in a week. Since January this year she goes to the gym daily. This is a woman Alloy bought a 2013 Toyota Corolla sedan for and gives a handsome monthly allowance. She lacks for nothing. Monday to Saturday she'll never be at home obviously staying away from the house because of Alloy's older sister.
Alloy had gotten an estate agent to look for a two bedroom apartment for her. Anyway on April 1st Alloy went to the gym to see her personal trainer and asked why the change of schedule and why the wife will be at the gym six days in the week. The gym management denied any change of schedule and insisted that she only comes to the gym three days a week.

When Alloy got home he confronted his wife.
" I was at the gym today and I was told you only go there three days in a week. Why are you lying? Why do you go the other days?"
"So, it has reached this stage where you are monitoring me?" the wife shot back.
"Tell me what's happening or are you cheating on me?" Alloy angrily demanded.
"You're calling me a harlot abi? You yeye man".
The wife lurched at Alloy and held him in the neck and Alloy wriggled himself out of her grip and slapped her. Immediately Alloy knelt down begging her.
"I'm sorry for slapping you. In twelve years of marriage I have never hit you. You were choking me and I was losing my breath. Abeg."
"I'll never forgive you. Useless man. I'll deal with you. You'll know I'm an Umuahia woman".

Alloy's older sister and Alloy's pastor from Redeemed Church were called by Alloy to beg her but she was still fuming and baying for blood.

The next day as Alloy was driving to the gate of his compound at about 6pm in the evening four young men intercepted him and dragged him out of his Toyota Prado SUV and one of them said, "So, you are not afraid. You beat up our sister. We'll deal with you." The four miscreants beat Alloy black and blue. They kicked him in the ribs and groin. At the screams of Alloy neighbors ran to the scene and the criminals fled. Alloy was rushed to the hospital and given treatment and discharged from the hospital around 10pm same day.

Alloy called me the next day and I drove down to see him at the pharmacy and he narrated the ordeal he suffered at the hands of the hoodlums the previous day. He wasn't looking too good but I never feared that the beatings he received would be fatal.

This morning Alloy woke up with a headache and a cough producing blood. He drove himself to the hospital. After a series of tests internal bleeding was diagnosed. Surgery was recommended but before he could be taken to the theater for anaesthesia and shaving he slumped and died exactly 3:36pm.

Alloy is dead.

*The wife has been arrested and handcuffed by the police and investigations have commenced into the death of Alloy.

Bandits kill 20 in Kaduna

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 04:54 AM PDT

Mohammed Adamu
Twenty persons have been reported killed in a fresh attack by unknown gunmen in Angwan Aku community,  Kajuru Local Government Area,  Kaduna State.

A resident said the attack was launched at about 7am on Monday by gunmen, allegedly dressed in military uniform and armed with AK47 rifles, machetes and sticks.

They stormed the village, shooting sporadically, he said.

The Nation learnt that several others were injured in the attack.

The source said: "The attackers stormed the village and they were shooting indiscriminately and everybody started running into the bush. They were pursuing us as we ran. Some people were killed in the bush.

"Some of them were wearing military uniforms with bulletproof vests… I saw them from where I was hiding."

The source, who pleaded not to be named for "security reasons",  said the police arrived in the village in eight Hilux vans after the bandits had run into the bush.

"The police came in eight Hilux vehicles, but instead of pursuing the bandits who ran into the bush, they just turned back," he said.

According to him, there had been speculations last week of the attacks.

"We had thought that the government would have taken the speculations seriously and be proactive, but they didn't take it seriously and this led to the killing of more of our people. It is rather very unfortunate," he added.

A former President of the Adara Development Association (ADA), Danladi Yarima, confirmed the attack in a telephone interview, describing it as "unfortunate".
He blamed it on the government's handling of the security situation in the state.

The incessant killings in Kajuru communities stared on February 10 when some herdsmen allegedly attacked Anguwan Barde, an Adara community, at night and killed 11 residents.

The Adara were alleged to have embarked on reprisal attacks.

Yarima, a lawyer, had in a recent statement said that about 4,000 people had been sacked from their homes following the destruction of properties by bandits.

Yakubu Sabo, spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command could not be reached for comment last night.  The messages sent to him on the telephone and on the Police/Media WhatsApp platform were not replied.
