Movie: ‘4th Republic’ is a political thriller that sticks to the relatable facts

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:30 PM PDT

'4th Republic' is a thrilling political procedural that chronicles Nigeria's political and electoral system in the last two decades.

'4th Republic' is a long, and intriguing trip through tribunal process with an expose on the messy web of deceit, betrayal, and discord behind the scenes. The political thriller also reveals a harrowing round of blockage faced by investigators and masterminded by more powerful figures.

Writers, Emil B. Garuba and Zainab Omaki exploit a tight screenplay that is relatable, void of distraction, direct, and succinctly clear. '4th Republic' is sharp-witted and fiery like many political thrillers that come out distinct despite being weaved in a web of melodrama. The story is a perfectly concise 120-minute summary of Nigeria's political, electoral and judicial efforts in sustaining the republic's democracy.

Kate Henshaw (as Mabel King) is composed, determined, and an incorruptible female politician eager to make a change in the Confluence state. And in Enyinna Nwigwe (as Ike), a collected, young and brilliant chap, she found a trustworthy and incorruptible aide. Supporting roles from Bimbo Manuel, Linda Ejiofor, Yakubu Mohammed, Sani Muazu, Six Foot Plus, and Medupin Olalekan make certain that every scene is stuffed with stellar performances.

The movie plot is centered on the canceled votes from Ikomi LG, the largest local government area in Confluence state after electoral officers were massacred and election materials were burned. Mabel King is called to the fore when her campaign director, Sikiru was murdered alongside INEC officials and Youth Corp members working with the officials. And the plot to unravel the culprits behind the massacre as well as contest the result announced by INEC sees Mabel seeking redress at an election tribunal.

Bimbo Manuel (as St. James) is a cold and mean villain in this political thriller. In his usual character, Manuel gives a no-holds-barred performance as the loyal and ruthless aide to serving Sani Muazu (as Governor Sani). As the governor's man Friday, Manuel pulls all the strings and ensures his bosses perceived enemies are taken care of - be it bad or good. Ishaya Bako struck gold casting Bimbo Manuel for the role of St James.

'4th Republic' further turns complex election tribunal conversations between legal practitioners into a couple of interesting and enjoyable scenes. Here, rap act, Six Foot Plus got his chance to interpret the role of a defense lawyer with the backing of the state and ability to make a case in the glaring eyes of truth. Maybe not all election tribunals have become interesting watch for your average audience, but Emil B. Garuba and Zainab Omaki are two tremendous interpreters. Both writers neither left us in the dust or spoke too high above our heads

And Bako encapsulates a typical 18 months election tribunal is just 2 hours. It's crystal clear that Bako's directorial brilliance has rubbed off on the final outcome of the movie, '4th Republic'. Bako's writing ability complements his directorial talent while heightening the nostalgic moments in the film and depriving it of derivative or over saturation. The flow of the film feels natural and original.

Written by Emil B. Garuba and Zainab Omaki, '4th Republic' is co-produced by Griot Studios Ltd. and Amateur Heads Productions with Bem Pever, Ishaya Bako, Kemi 'Lala' Akindoju and Ummi A. Yakubu serving as producers.

Marvin Boss, Don Jazzy finally reveals why he’s not yet married

Marvin Boss, Don Jazzy finally reveals why he's not yet married
Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy has finally revealed why he's yet to get married.

He made the revelation while on episode of "Street Hop" on Hip TV and according to him, his choice of being single is simply because there are lots of amazing people and he is not sure of which one to go for.

"There are a lot of amazing people, that's why I can't pick one. It doesn't have anything to do with my status. I have trust issues but I feel like even if I wasn't Don Jazzy, I probably would be the same," he said.

This is coming just after the music producer took to his Instagram account to tease that he now has a girlfriend.

Speaking about artistes who back out of music deals with his label, Don Jazzy said he has learned to move on in the face of the fast-growing nature of the country's music industry.

"The Nigerian music industry has come a long way. We used to get sentimental about these things and some still are. Unlike when it used to take everyone unawares, people have gotten used to it," he explained.

"I've been through almost every scenario you can think of in the music industry. It's not the end of the world. You get to realize that these things happen. If you get to a point where you feel you can do it by yourself, then why not?"

"I don't really want to be with anyone that doesn't want to be with me. My contract is the only contract in the world that has the clause 'the moment you're tired, you can go."

Philippines president, brags about his huge p£nis

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Philippines president, brags about his huge p£nis
Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte has publicly come out to brag about the size of his penis and sexual prowess.

The 74-year-old politician made his bizarre claims while speaking at a public rally which took place at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan.

According to the SunUK, he started off by boasting how he has a very impressive member which "points all the way up."

Duterte then added a man's good looks count for nothing if he doesn't measure up. That's why, he explained, he would have been furious if God had given him a smaller penis.

"If God gave me a small penis, I would have cut it in front of the altar," he said, drawing laughs from the crowd.

"Son of a b*tch, is this all you have given me?"

He then told how when he lived at the YMCA in Manila as a student he would walk around butt naked and drew admiration from other residents staring at his penis size.

"My towel, I won't (wrap it around me). I will just walk towards them (naked) – they would admire me. (They'd tell me) 'Son of a b*tch, Duterte, you're so hard!'"

He added,

"When I was young, (my penis) almost looked up to the sky."

Duterte then moved his microphone up and pointed it all the way to the ceiling at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan and said that his penis was so upright that the top would almost reach his belly button.

The leader added:

"I'm very thankful to my father. At least he let me out into the world highly-equipped."

Duterte then recalled visiting a place which he simply described as full of women.

"They ran away. 'We don't like him. That skinny guy. He won't stop (having sex)."

South Africa:Cisco launches Incubation hub for SMMEs in Durban

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:53 AM PDT

Cisco in partnership with Minister of Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams launched of Cisco South Africa's USD $143 600,00 state-of-the-art Incubation Hub in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

This is the second facility of its kind, built by the company, in South Africa and aims to develop SMMEs as well as speed up their entry into the digital marketplace. The hub called 'Cisco Edge Incubation Centre' is part of the company's commitment to action priorities of the country's National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 in terms of creating jobs, enhancing skills development and boosting economic growth.

Minister Ndabeno-Abrahams highlighted the importance of using technology to make economic freedom a reality for South Africans and driving this through SMMEs. She applauded Cisco for its contribution and commitment to building a digital conomy through real, tangible and meaning efforts such as training up youth and supporting local businesses. She hinted that she is in talks with the company after the Global Citizen Festival – where Cisco committed to training up 1 million young people in the data science space – about the department possibly coming on board to accelerate this goal.

The hub, which will be based at Dube Trade Port, is a smart building with cutting-edge Cisco technology that offers complete business facilities including workspaces with high-speed broadband connectivity, video conferencing and collaboration platforms, as well as boardroom and training facilities. In addition, SMMEs will be able to connect with global Cisco experts, who can support them develop business ideas and concepts in a digital world.

Dube Tade CEO Hamish Erskine explained that the Dube Trade Port is a renowned world-class special economic zone that enhances South Africa's manufacturing and export capabilities, and supports airport-related activities including cargo operations, agriculture, warehousing and commercial real estate. It is geared toward promoting business growth, the creation of employment, revenue generation, the export of value-added commodities and the attraction of foreign and local investment. It is owned by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.

According to the SME Landscape Report 2018/2019 by research company In On Africa, the small business sector is a critical component of the national economy, as it is a major source of employment that drives economic growth. However, the report – which surveyed over 1,000 SME owners – also revealed that small businesses were young, vulnerable and in need of support. A key stumbling block was access to funding and access to market. 52 per cent of SME owners admitted that they needed a lot of assistance to reach markets as various industries were extremely competitive. As a result, many were failing in its first three years of operation.

"Our goal is to enable SMMEs to accelerate their growth by ensuring they get access to world-class technology. We are living in a world that is changing faster than ever imagined and we are inspired by the prospect of an economy with abundant jobs, a place where entrepreneurs can thrive," says Clayton Naidoo, General Manager for Cisco Sub-Saharan Africa.

"With technology comes many opportunities, especially in Africa, the fastest growing region in the world. Cisco recognises Africa's talent and we want to continue being an enabler of tech ecosystems across the continent. With our resources, SMMEs are not only able to grow but also stay competitive."

Dube Trade Port CEO, Hamish Erskine, says the objective of the Cisco Edge Center is to create a circle of opportunity for unemployed ICT graduates and that they plan to do this with an ecosystem of partners. Representing the public Sector ecosystem will be SITA, who will work in partnership with Cisco to incubate SMMEs and ensure that they have the required skills to design, implement and manage government networks. These selected SMMEs will have equal opportunity to bid for SITA/ government ICT projects.

"The kind of facilities at this hub will give entrepreneurs the kind of head start they require to gain a competitive advantage. It will also help them stay ahead of the game in a tough marketplace, while boosting economic growth for the country," says Erskine.

The centre will provide SMMEs the opportunity to employ graduates from its Networking Academy (NetAcad) program to give them workplace experience. Netacad is the world's largest classroom giving students hands-on digital skills training for in-demand careers. For 20 years, NetAcad has changed the lives of 9.2 million students in 180 countries. In South Africa alone, more than 62,000 students (29 per cent of whom are female) have been trained with technical skills.

The name of the centres stands for the competitiveness that most of these small businesses lack to establish and sustain successful enterprises. It is this resilience that we are determined to arm them: Experience, Design, GTM (Go to Market) and Earn.

Foldable Phones to 30million units by 2023 says Gartner

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:44 AM PDT

Huawei Foldable Phones
Worldwide shipments of devices — PCs, tablets and mobile phones — are on pace to reach 2.21 billion units in 2019, exhibiting flat growth year over year, according to Gartner. The PC market is expected to continue its downward trend, while the mobile phone market is set to return to growth in 2020.

"For the eighth consecutive year, the PC market is at a standstill," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. "PC shipments will total 258 million units in 2019, a 0.6 per cent decline from 2018." Traditional PCs are set to decline 3 per cent in 2019 to total 189 million units.

"Consumers are increasingly retiring their PCs but not replacing them, with shipments down by another 2.5 million units in 2019. For businesses, the Windows 10 migration continues into the next phase. While the US is now in the final phase, China having delayed their migration still has a few years to go. "By moving the Windows 10 migration to 2020, organisations increase the risk of remaining on an unsupported operating system. Windows 7 support is scheduled to end in January 2020," said Mr Atwal.

Gartner analysts predict that Windows 10 will represent 75 per cent of the professional PC market by 2021.

Mobile Phone Market to Contract in 2019 But Return to Growth in 2020

Shipments of mobile phones are estimated to reach 1.8 billion units in 2019, a decline of 0.5 per cent year over year. "Users have reached a threshold for new technology and applications, which means that unless new models provide significant new utility, efficiency or experiences, users don't want or need to upgrade," said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. "As a result, we expect the high-end mobile phone market to continue to show a decline in mature markets during 2019."

In 2020, the mobile phone market is forecast to return to growth, with a shipments increase of 1.2 per cent from 2019. Nevertheless, vendors need to realise that consumers are extending the lifetime of their phones. Gartner expects the average high-end phone lifetime to increase from 2.6 years to 2.8 years through 2023.

Foldable Phones to Account for 5 Per Cent of High-End Phones by 2023

A number of vendors recently unveiled foldable phones during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with many estimated to launch in late 2019.

While Gartner analysts expect foldable phones to potentially re-inject innovation in the smartphone market, they are cautious about their short-term uptake due to trade-offs. Gartner estimates that foldable phones will account for 5 per cent of high-end phones by 2023, amounting to 30 million units.

"We expect that users will use a foldable phone as they do their regular smartphone, picking it up hundreds of times a day, unfolding it sporadically and typing on its plastic screen, which may scratch quickly depending on the way it folds," said Ms Cozza. "Through the next five years, we expect foldable phones to remain a niche product due to several manufacturing challenges. In addition to the surface of the screen, the price is a barrier despite we expect to decline with time. Currently priced at $2,000, foldable phones present too many trade-offs, even for many early technology adopters."

In the short term, Gartner analysts expect manufacturers to provide more form factor experimentation with foldable phones, as they aim to understand optimal usability patterns and user preferences. "A key consideration for product managers is to place usability at the core of their product development, ensuring the user experience is continuous and seamless across all foldable screens," said Ms Cozza.

Branch will also offer preferential loan terms to Visa merchants who accept Visa on mobile QR codes in Kenya. The Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this to newsmen in Awka, said the security agencies comprised of the army, police and local vigilante.

He also said the Command has deployed two units of mobile policemen and other regular officers to the area.

Meanwhile, the governor of the state, Willie Obiano, currently on a trip abroad, may likely cut short his trip following the attack, the Commissioner for Information and enlightenment, Mr. C-Don Adinuba has said.

He said, "A report of the incident had been sent to the Governor who may come back to the country earlier than his scheduled date of return in view of the seriousness of the attack."

Buhari calls for safe, inclusive digital world

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:58 AM PDT

Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on world leaders to come up with proposals to create a digital world that is accessible, inclusive and safe to all.

He made the call in his keynote speech at the 2019 Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) in Dubai on Monday.

Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said a certain level of regulation was needed to preserve the integrity of the digital economy.

The theme of the summit is: 'Mapping the Future of Foreign Direct Investment: Enriching World Economies through Digital Globalization.''

Acknowledging that digital globalisation is transforming the world almost every day with innovations and transformative ideas, the Nigerian leader cautioned that the cyber world would remain a constant threat if left unregulated.

He decried the use of the cyberspace to manipulate elections, subvert the democratic rights of citizens as well as propagate violence.

He also lamented the steady rise in fake news and cybercrimes, particularly when platforms are hijacked and manipulated by criminals.

President Buhari, therefore, called for collective efforts led by both public and private sector leaders to address the emerging threats of digital globalisation.

''Today, we have a cyber-world that is intangible but real. This borderless world is powerful, and it impacts the lives of billions of people, no matter how remote their physical locations are.

''People work in it. People socialise in it. And people invest in it. This presents enormous opportunities. But it also remains a constant threat if left unregulated.

''On the one hand, it has made the human race more productive and more efficient. Today, we have digital banking, virtual currencies and many social platforms that connect people and cultures.

''On the other hand, we have seen platforms hijacked and manipulated as evidenced by the steady rise in fake news and cybercrimes.

''More recently, we are also witnessing the use of the cyberspace to manipulate elections, subvert the democratic rights of citizens as well as propagate violence.

''In effect, the digital world has become the new frontier for both good and evil. Therefore, the challenge for world leaders must be to ensure that this space is inclusive, accessible and safe,'' the President told the ninth edition of AIM, attended by world leaders in both the public and private sectors." he stated.
The President used the occasion to reflect on the digital revolution in Nigeria, buoyed by impressive statistics on mobile phone penetration, technology hubs and the advent of young entrepreneurs attracting investments of over 100 million dollars to the country.

His words: ''In Nigeria, our mobile phone penetration exceeds eighty per cent. This means the majority of Nigeria's one hundred and ninety million citizens are fully connected to this new digital world; especially our youth.

''Sixty-five per cent or one hundred and seventeen million Nigerians are under the age of 25 years. These bright minds are the drivers of this emerging digital sector.

''Today, Nigeria has close to ninety technology hubs and every day, new ones are coming up and they are all developing solutions for Nigerian, and indeed global problems.

''Already, these young entrepreneurs have attracted investments of over one hundred million dollars. A sizeable amount from overseas including Silicon Valley.

''As many of you from this region are aware, Nigerian start-ups always have a very impressive outing at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX). Many have won prizes.''

President Buhari told the investment summit that as leaders in the public and private sector it was their responsibility to create the enabling environment for young people to flourish and reach their full potential.

He shared the Nigerian experience: ''When we came in 2015, we immediately agreed that any future economic growth must be inclusive. As the Nigerian youth population is fully digitalised, it is clear that the idea of having an inclusive economy cannot be achieved without digital inclusion.''

The President announced that Nigeria was working on creating the largest digital database in Africa, with over thirty million Nigerians and legal residents already captured in the country's digital identity system.

Also, the President highlighted that Nigeria's public sector reform programmes, from procurement to payroll to revenue collections, focus on digitising key operations.

He said the recourse to technology and digitisation reinforces the administration's objectives of improving efficiency, accountability and transparency in governance.

On cybersecurity, President Buhari said Nigeria has taken the lead in cyber policing in West Africa, working with regional and global partners.

Ahmed, Emefiele join experts at IMF/World Bank meeting

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:50 AM PDT

Zainab Ahmed and Godwin Emefiele
The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed and the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, will join other economic experts from around the world to discuss issues affecting global economy in Washington DC, U.S.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the discussions are scheduled to hold between April 9 and April 14, under the auspices of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC.

The 2019 Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank is expected to bring together central bank governors, ministers of finance, parliamentarians, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organisations and the academia.

The experts will discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness.

The meeting will also feature seminars, regional briefings, press conferences and many other events with focus on global economy, international development and the world's financial system.

NAN reports that Nigeria attends the meeting each year because of the quantum of investments and technical support it receives from both the IMF and the World Bank.

Although Nigeria currently has zero loans with the IMF, it enjoys technical support from the organisation.

The World Bank Group, on the other hand, is helping to fight poverty and improve living standards in the country through 33 Core Knowledge Product Reports and 29 ongoing National and Regional projects.

This is in addition to about 60 Trust Funds.

The World Bank Group since 1958, has supported Nigeria with loans and the International Development Association (IDA) credits worth about 14.2 billion dollars.

The group in 2017 fiscal year alone committed 1.51 billion dollars to Nigeria, 2.58 billion dollars in 2018 and in 2019; it has already committed 20 million dollars on different development projects across the country.
Some of the projects are on nutrition, polio eradication, conflict monitoring, electrification, erosion, education, economic transformation, promoting fiscal transparency and accountability in states.

Meanwhile, the Executive Directors of the World Bank on Friday unanimously selected David Malpass as President of the World Bank Group for a five-year term, effective Tuesday.

Earlier in his career, Malpass served as the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Developing Nations and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Latin American Economic Affairs.

2019 UTME slips: Adhere strictly to printing order, JAMB tells candidates

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 05:45 AM PDT

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged candidates for the 2019 UTME to adhere strictly to the printing order of their examination slips, to avoid unnecessary issues.

This is contained in the board's weekly bulletin tagged 'JAMBULLETIN', by the Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Lagos.

According to the bulletin, printing of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) notification slip is on-going, as the board has since made it ready for all candidates who registered for the examination.

Over 1.8 million candidates registered for the examination which has been scheduled to commence on Thursday, April 11.

"The notification is to allow candidates to know their examination schedules, which includes time, date and venue of the examination.

"Candidates are therefore advised to take the printing order seriously in order for them to have an idea of the location of their centres, well ahead of the examination.

"It is also to enable them to prepare for all necessary logistics of being at their respective centres on time," the bulletin stated.

It added that the e-slips of the candidates had been placed on their JAMB profiles created at the point of registration.

"For those who are unable to access their slips through their portal at www.jamb.org.ng, the board has provided a step by step process of making the printing easy.

"First, they should go to the official JAMB portal, www.jamb.org.ng/efacility /printexaminationslip.

"Next, candidates would be required to enter their registration number, the telephone number used in vending the pin at the point of registration or email in the appropriate column and follow the next command," it said.

"Candidates are advised to print two copies of the examination slip in full, as one copy will be submitted at the centre while the second copy will be kept by the candidates for reference purpose," it said.

The bulletin added that it was important to note that there would be no rescheduling of the examination, no matter the reason.

It added that all candidates must ensure that they are verified using the Biometric Verification Machine.

Meanwhile, the board has also warned candidates and parents or guardians to desist from paying UTME application fees to schools or tutorial centres.
It said that the warning became necessary owing to the growing practice of some elite schools/colleges and tutorial centres that collect money in bulk from candidates to register them en masse.

According to the bulletin, through diligent investigation, the board discovered that schools involved in the practice usually levy candidates exorbitant sums running into millions of Naira for the purpose of the UTME registration.

"In this regard, it should be reiterated that the board does not do group registration, as candidates are required to do individual registration.

"The board has noted with displeasure a series of some of the unfortunate situation some of these schools, especially the elite ones, have put some candidates through.

"In their bid to make money, they engage in series of infractions in the name of group registration and other acts inimical to the interest of the candidates and the sanctity of the examination.

"This kind of fraudulent registration end up distorting candidate's data," it said.

It warned the public to be mindful of such unscrupulous schools or centres who more often than not, register candidates at unauthorised centres.

According to the bulletin, the board's examination is not a school-based examination and therefore does not require candidates registering in groups.

Pressure on Goje to accept Lawan for Senate President

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:13 AM PDT

Danjuma Goje
Some former governors are mounting pressure on their former colleague, Senator Danjuma Goje, to accept President Muhammadu Buhari's choice of Ahmad Lawan for Senate president.

The President is believed to have met Goje on the matter.

Lawan, who is the Senate Leader, is forging ahead. He met yesterday with some senators-elect and pleaded with them to give him a chance, The Nation learnt.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) former governors, including some of them who are senators,  have opted to back Buhari's decision on Lawan.

Some of the former governors include Ahmed Sani Yerima, Adamu Aliero, Abdullahi  Adamu, Aliyu Wammako, George Akume, Bukar Abba Ibrahim,  Kabiru Gaya and Godswill Akpabio.

It was gathered that the ex-governors appreciated the "cautious approach adopted by Goje to his aspiration without ruffling feathers but they felt he should defer to the President".

The ex-governors have sent a delegation to Goje to reconsider his position.

Although two of them were with Goje on Saturday for what was termed " a social gathering", it was unclear whether they were the ones who spoke on behalf of their colleagues.

A former governor, who pleaded not to be named, said: "It is true we are trying to avoid cracks in APC over the Ninth Senate President and some of us have met on the President's choice and how to prevail on Goje to sacrifice his aspiration.

"I can tell you that some of us have opened talks with him.  We are talking to him; we are mounting pressure. We also decided to send a delegation to him.

"As a matter of right, Goje is qualified to lead the Senate but we do not really want him to disagree with the President. And he is not a leader who believes in confrontation."

Responding to a question, the source added: "Our intervention is just a follow-up to the audience between the President and Goje."
"The former governor of Gombe  State is yet to make any categorical statement on his ambition."

Goje, it was learnt, told Buhari, who persuaded him to support Lawan, that he would "get back to him".

"Goje has not returned to the President on what he intends to do," a  source in the Presidency said.

The Lawan Group is, however, waiting for Goje's response before arranging a meeting between the two leaders.

Another source said: "Since a presidential intervention is already involved, we have deliberately asked Lawan to leave the initiative to President Buhari. The truth is that the President's meeting with Goje underscored the enormous respect he has for the ex-governor.

"Lawan is ready to meet with Goje but after the elders and the ex-governors have brokered a deal."

Lawan and members of his campaign team last night met with some senators-elect in Abuja on his aspiration.

The senators-elect are in the second batch of those to benefit from the induction course which was packaged by the National Assembly management.

A source at the session quoted Lawan as saying: "Give me a chance, I will provide quality leadership, I will carry every Senator along in whatever I do."

A Senator-elect said: "The campaign team of the Senate Leader reached out to some of us across party lines. I am new, but I am impressed by his experience on legislative business. Let us see how it goes."
