Simi schools her followers on feminism as she advocates for gender equality

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:00 PM PST

Simi took to Twitter to speak about feminism and also to reply to followers who did not agree with her views on feminism.

The singer began by tweeting: "Feminism makes many men feel so vulnerable, because you find that society that gave you your "superiority card" is starting to know (and want) better for women – and you donno wtf to do. Lol Gag is, if you support us, life is better for everyone. Don't be afraid."

She added: "I have a lot of female friends that shy away from feminism because they're hung up on "some feminists are bitter". Which one is your own? Do ur part. Feminism doesn't alter anyone's personality. But the core of the movement is the same. Don't let anyone decide your path for you.@

Some Twitter users called her out for her views and she responded to some of their tweets.

@standard_og wrote: "I love when women stand for there rights and also know what they worth in the society….but the act of feminism? I don't really like the idea."

And Simi replied: "But that's what feminism is. Fighting for our rights to choose and be what we want. Fighting to get the things we deserve. Don't you want that for us too?"

@officialugo_ wrote: "Real feminism shouldn't make any guy feel inferior. My problem is when some ladies think they can be a man, I'm like nah, we r all equal but at the same time we're not. Everyone has a part to play and what I can't do, you can and what you can't do I can. Kelege megbe."

Simi said in response: "The only reason women have probably ever wanted to be men is – the privileges men have enjoyed. Besides that, why will any woman want to be a man? And now we want to share those privileges across genders equally. We're different with diff strengths/weaknesses, but of equal value."

@igwe_of_Lagos slammed Simi for her views, writing: "And here i was thinking you have sense."

Simi replied to him: "I'm not offended by this. Lol. You know everything I'm saying is true. I don't want bad for men. I just want more for women.

@theblackbe said to Simi: "Don't be head strong lady Most feminist are single."

And she replied: "Lol. Most single people are happier than those in abusive relationships.@

She added: "Is 'single' now an insult?"

A female Twitter user reacted, writing: "Simi I love you so much and you're still the artist I listen to most but damn don't be a feminist please We were made from these men so we can't be equal with them But I don't support maltreatment from men either."

Simi replied to her: "Omg. I love you, and I hope that you start to understand that no man in the entire world is more valuable than you are."

The interaction between Simi and her followers went on and on...

Seun Kuti lashes out at lady who advised kids against becoming Marlians

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:00 PM PST

Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has lashed out at a lady who advised kids against going to The Fela Shrine.

The singer berates the lady for telling a group of boys not to end up like her twin brothers who got arrested and spent six years in jail after going to dance at Fela's shrine.

In a video posted on his page, the lady while advising the young boys against becoming Marlians, said

"There was a Fela in our days. When we were growing up, there was a Fela. I had my own elder brothers, that were shrine gang. They would go to the shrine every Friday. Let me tell you the good news. Two of them stayed in Kirikiri for six years. In that process, my father became very poor.

"My mother, if you see my mother and they told you her age, you would not believe. She sold her wrapper, sold her clothes, sold everything she had. My father sold two cars to be able to get these guys out of Kirikiri. It didn't work. Unfortunately, they were twins. That is what Marlian life does to you. They went to Fela's shrine, they went to dance. There was a fight. Police came and packed all of them."

Angered by the lady's statement that her brothers were arrested because they were in Fela's shrine, Seun wrote;

"See all these Lies by these idiots. Fela Name don full everyone mouth. These idiots that know of nothing sacred. Now this one is talking about her brothers that went to shrine and police locked them for 6 years for fighting? Does that make sense. I grew up in the shrine, where is my Kiri Kiri record. Let me advise Nigerian Parents, it's ur duty to raise your kids and this woman is just as dangerous to their psyche as the 'Marlian' syndrome u are afraid of!

"It is because we allow people like this interact with our children we have an educational system that tends to reduce justice as it produces lawyers, reduce health as it produces doctors and created ignorance as it produces teachers hence the more lawyers the less justice. The more doctors the less health and the more teachers the more ignorance. Everyone just dey disrespect Fela as dem like, now this goats and her goat twins have gone to prison for '6 years for fighting'. Better tell the world that ur brothers were robbers. Ode!! #getthesax."

It all started when Perruzi shared a post in which he said;

"Fell in Love with the wrong person, So I'm jumping out of it.. first thing tomorrow morning."

Recall that a few months back, Peruzzi confirmed the dating rumour with Cee-C. This he did by referring to her as his battery charger.

Anthony Joshua will bag a chieftaincy crown when next he visits Nigeria

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST

The WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion of the world, Anthony Joshua, will be crowned a chief in his hometown of Sagamu, Ogun State, when next he checks into town.

The 30-year-old was treated to a hero's welcome in the birthplace of his parents this week in Nigeria, where he made small talk with two notable traditional rulers and posed for photographs with a cross section of fawning clan heads.

Hundreds of fans in Sagamu chanted Joshua's name and sang his praises as he visited the palaces of the Alaafin of Elepe and the Akarigbo of Remo land.

The Guardian reports that the Chief of Staff to Akarigbo of Remo, Alhaji Iliasu Aina, has disclosed that the traditional ruler will confer Joshua with a chieftaincy title when he comes visiting again in March of 2020.

"Joshua's visit on Wednesday was an impromptu one," Aina was quoted to have said by the newspaper. "He is coming back to Nigeria in March, and he is going to be conferred with a chieftaincy title. He is our son and it was really a delight for us to receive him in his hometown on Wednesday," Aina, who is popularly referred to as 'Merry, Merry,' said.

The Guardian writes that the boxer could be conferred with the Ajagungbade of Yoruba land (A warrior who fights and brings crowns) title.

Joshua could take on the winner of the Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury bout in Saudi Arabia, his promoter Eddie Hearn has hinted.

Wilder and Fury will square up to the other on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

This is how the ‘Okada’ got its name

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:30 AM PST

Okada recently became a globally recognised word in the dictionary and it would be interesting to know where it originated from.

The generally acceptable word to describe a motorcycle used mainly for transportation of humans and goods in Nigeria is Okada.

Now for a lot of people, the word Okada simply means a motorcycle; but the truth behind it is that there is more to the name and its origin. Only recently, the popularity of Okada received some global recognition as 'Okada' was officially added to the English lexicon.

Several words, mainly of West Africa origin, made it to the dictionary in 2020. However, the one that got my attention was that of Okada. A lot of people who grew up in Benin City or any other part of Edo state like me would know that Okada is more than just a motorcycle.

The word Okada is actually the name of a town and the headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area in Edo State. Yes, I know a lot of people probably had no prior knowledge of this major information before reading that last sentence.

Okada meaning: A motorcycle that is used as a taxi.

Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion
In the 1960s, a certain businessman named Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of the Benin Kingdom who hails from the town Okada, began expanding his various businesses across the country.

The police officer turned businessman became a force to reckon with in the country after the establishment of Midway Motors in 1968 which was specialised in assembling cars in the country.

The establishment of that company saw the wealth of the Esama grow tremendously. Even though the Esama of Benin bought his first private jet in 1981, the billionaire businessman established the very first private airline in Nigeria in 1983 and named it 'Okada Airlines.'

The establishment of that airline was such a huge deal that the military head of state at that time, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, sent his vice president, Admiral Augustus Aikhomo to commission the purchase of one of its biggest planes, Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet in 1992.

Okada Airlines began to grow in leaps and bounds as the company had over ten planes in its fleet. Owning the first private airline in Nigeria not only made Chief Gabriel Igbinedion one of the richest men in Africa but a very powerful and influential political figure in the country.

The rise of Okada motorcycles in Nigeria
In the 1980s, during the military era, while a few were getting richer due to corruption and failed government policies, Nigeria's infrastructure began suffering monumental collapse across the country.

One major sector in the economy that was hugely affected was intracity transportation. As Nigerians strove to survive in tough terrains, the use of motorcycles as an alternative means of transportation in major cities in the country like Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Benin-City, Warri, Kaduna, Enugu, Port Harcourt, and Calabar, became an imperative.

Recall that it was around this same period that the popular Okada Airlines was flying the Nigerian flag across Africa. Its popularity was even felt amongst the poor who couldn't afford or even dream of flying a plane. So, to sell the idea of cheap means of transportation around the cities across the country, motorcycles were named after Okada Airlines.

The name Okada Airlines was too long or complicated to call a motorcycle as the rider might not even know how to pronounce 'Airlines,' hence it was cut short to Okada. It was easy to tell a young, struggling farmer or teacher that riding on an Okada motorcycle will give you the same fast speed he/she would have experienced on an Okada Airline Boeing 747 Jet.

In no distant time, the name Okada became the name for all motorcycles used for public transportation across the country. It was fast, cheap, and readily available for even individuals living below the poverty line.

Fast forward to a few years later. Nigeria moved from importers of motorcycles to establishing and assembling plants in several cities especially across the Eastern part of the country.

The flip side of the Okada motorcycle
It won't be wrong if you include riding on an Okada in the '1000 Ways To Die' show. Since its introduction and popularity, it has become one of the easiest routes to road accidents in the country. This is due to the manner these riders conduct themselves on the roads.

The truth is that with N300,000 and N400,000, anyone can walk into a shop and get an Okada. A lot of times, Okada riders do not go through any training before becoming 'professionals'. Once you can afford one, practice behind your compound for a few days, you can hit the road and become an Okada rider.

This is coupled with the fact that laws to control the use of motorcycles for commercial use are lax or non-existent. So I won't bore you with too many stats on Okada accidents. Let's just share with you what the casualty figures of Okada accidents have been between 2010 to 2014.

According to the African Journal for Trauma, during the 4 years between August 2010 and July 2014, there were 128 motorcycle death autopsies recorded. Of this number, 96 cases (75%) were recorded in Lagos state alone.

The report also states that within a period of 2 years before the traffic law, a total of 411 Road Traffic Accident autopsies were recorded, out of which 96 cases (23.4%) were from motorcycle accidents. Similarly, out of the 286 RTA death autopsies done during 2 years after the law, 32 cases were due to motorcycle accidents which represent 11.2%.

In 2020, the Lagos state government banned the use of Okadas and tricycles popularly known as Keke Napep, in six major local governments. According to the government, this means of transportation has become responsible for not just accidents but for the increase in crime rates in the state.

Edo state, from where the name Okada originated, banned motorcycles as a means of transportation in 2013 for similar reasons. However, the motorcycle is still used as a means of transportation in other towns in the state, including in Okada town.

Okada Airlines today
By the mid-1990s, Okada Airlines began to witness a decline in its popularity and standard. The airline recorded three major crashes between 1988, 1991 and 1992. The airline finally wound down operations in 1997. It however tried to bounce back in the early 2000s to no avail.

According to its Chairman, Igbinedion, the whole process was ethnicised and politicised by government officials. The Chief wondered how five airlines whose operational facilities could not be compared in standard to those of Okada Airlines, were granted licenses and his airline denied one.

However, Chief Igbinedion remains one of the wealthiest men in the country with various businesses spanning the education, real estate, broadcasting, banking, farming, entertainment and media sectors in the country bearing his name.

Okada town
Okada town, from where the commercial motorcycle got its name, is home to the first private university in the country--Igbinedion University owned by Chief Igbinedion. It also houses a huge cattle ranch where Esama's huge farming business is located.

Another interesting thing about the Okada town is that it has a teaching hospital, established by Chief Igbinedion, and the famous 'Okada Wonderland,' an amusement park built by the Esama in the 1980s.

The Igbinedions have been so influential in that town that the family has produced the first governor from that town in Chief Lucky Igbinedion, a local government chairman (Mr Charles Igbinedion) and a former House of Representatives member (Barr Omosede Igbinedion).

At some point, one of Chief Igbinedion's sons, Peter, was the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Watch This Strongwoman Bend a Frying Pans with her bare hands

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:00 AM PST

When it comes to demonstrating grip strength, German strongwoman Kathleen Krausse is a force to be reckoned with. In a recently surfaced YouTube video, Krausse attempts to break a (very, very specific) Guinness World Record for "Most Frying Pans Rolled in One Minute (Female)" while on the set of a TV special taped in China back in 2015. "I love cooking, but I hate to clean this pan...so I can do this," she says at the start of the video, showing off a rolled up frying pan. "I believe I can beat the record." Spoiler: She does just that.

Technically, Krause destroyed 8 frying pans, but one wasn't completed by the time the clock ran out, meaning the judges only counted 7. That achievement still bested the previous record of 6 rolled up frying pans in one minute. As a result, Krausse was awarded a medal and plaque to commemorate her new record.

As one YouTuber commented,

"Her: __________ Me: still tryng to open the pickle jar."

While it may seem like a niche achievement, the fry pan-rolling stunt is actually a common demonstration of grip strength within the strongman and strongwoman community. In 2017, for instance, strongman Eddie Hall bent a frying pan during an appearance on BBC Breakfast.

Anybody need a frying pan? This is what the world's strongest man @eddiehallWSM did to our frying pan this morning... pic.twitter.com/ojHxQd84fX BBC Breakfast (@BBCBreakfast)

Strongman Brian Shaw also took a shot at rolling a cast iron frying pan in November 2018.

It may take years before you catch up to the likes of Krausse and Brian Shaw, but there are some simple ways you can get to work improving your grip strength and good reasons to do it. Often its your hands that limit you when you lift, Jedd Johnson, a five-time North American Grip Sport champ, previously told MH.

The positioning of your hands matters, too, says personal trainer Trevor Thieme, C.S.C.S . "Even slight variations in hand position during a lift can totally change which muscles are targeted," he says. "Take the dumbbell curl, for example. Using the standard supinated grip targets your biceps, but if you rotate your hands 90 degrees to a neutral grip, the emphasis shifts to a different elbow flexor, the brachialis. If you rotate your hands 90 degrees again (to a pronated grip), youll target yet another elbow flexor, the brachioradialis."

Over time, continuing to add grip variations like these could translate to pumping heavier ironif not bending it.

'For Your Love' is an amazing reminiscence of love and a reminder of Iyanya's talent

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 03:00 AM PST

On February 21, 2020, Nigerian singer, Iyanya released his long touted EP, 'For Your Love.' Promotion for the EP commenced in the final quarter of 2019 and a listening party held at Boomplay's former HQ. At the time, word on the street was that this was going to be an album.

Then, a few days ago, Iyanya did the familiar pre-release ritual by Nigerian artists. He deleted all the pictures on his Instagram and tweeted a link to For Your Love EP. Well, it did not get the required traction via retweets and likes. Yet, Iyanya and his team remained tight-lipped on something that required great noise.

Nonetheless, the EP has dropped and it's actually better than a lot of people will care to admit. In fact, it's impressive - the only problem with the EP as a body of work is its length which makes it slightly hard to pass judgement.

'Over You' opens For Your Love. It is sentimental ballad marked by an EDM-esque vocal sample and guitar chords suited to an alternative number. Lyrically, it is the wishful thinking that accompanies a bad break-up. This is so beautiful.

'Believe' feels like something birthed between Nigerian and Eastern Africa. While the former track was a post-break-up number, this one is an ode to a beautiful woman who is driving Iyanya crazy. Iyanya has really delivered so far.

'Room 305' is zanku-beat that accompanies xylophone melodies for something incredible. This song is brilliant because the beat is brilliant enough on its own. What Iyanya does is simply allow the beat flourish while he finds pockets in the beat that are good enough for him to shine - and he excels. This is yet another good song.

With 'Days Are Gone,' we are back to the mellow rhythm. Iyanya "misses the good old days" and he's not afraid to talk about it.

Final Thoughts

This EP feels like a diary of Iyanya's relationship gone sour. With it, Iyanya reminisces the good and the bad times - if I'm right. Its best trait is production - it didn't falter once. Iyanya does brilliantly not to suffocate the beats even once. Instead and by his famous talent, he delivers everytime.

The only problem with For Your Love - as a body of work - is its length. We are in an era where artists can do anything they want, but Iyanya should have made it longer and this EP would have been amazing.
