Human Feet Mysteriously Washed Ashore on British Columbia Shorelines

Over the past 12 years, at least 15 human feet have been found along the shores of a Canadian province. More than half of those feet were determined to have belonged to people who either died by accident or committed suicide, while the remaining third remain unidentified, according to the British Columbia Coroners Service. The last one was discovered in September 2018 in a blue sock and a gray Nike sneaker in West Vancouver. The grisly phenomenon has captivated the minds of the public and media for years, with theories of the feets' origins ranging from natural disasters to something more sinister.

The Coroners Service of British Columbia is seeking the public's help because they were unable to identify the person whose foot that washed up on the Vancouver shoreline. The government office, which investigates deaths in the western Canadian province, said it belongs to a male believed to be younger than 50.

The agency released an infographic showing where — and when — all the feet have been found:

"This is the 15th human foot found on British Columbia shorelines since August 2007," the Coroners Service said.

The decedent was wearing a light grey Nike Free RN shoe with a black Nike swoosh logo and white base, white laces and a blue sock. The shoe was a men's U.S. size 9.5 with an OrthoLite insert. The shoe was manufactured between Feb. 1 and April 17, 2017, and appeared to be in relatively new condition.

One theory, the Toronto Star has previously reported on, links the feet washing ashore to missing bodies from a plane crash that happened near Quadra Island in the Vancouver area in 2005. Another, The Guardian says, ties them to human remains that have – with the help of ocean currents – drifted across the Pacific following the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.

The fact that the foot was found encased in a sports sneaker is key to it being discovered. Had it not been inside one, the foot may have sunken to the sea or ocean floor, or have been consumed by wildlife, experts say.

Several other human feet have also reportedly been discovered in the same region in Washington state in recent years.
