Singer, Wande Coal allegedly part way over indiscipline with Management

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Singer Wande Coal and his management have allegedly parted ways over indiscipline.

The singer and his management are said to have been going back and forth to work things out for a continuous working relationship for some time now.

However, sources disclosed that all attempts to make the business relationship work failed sometimes in May 2020.

Sources further disclosed that the head of the singer's management team, Oladeinde Fajana, had since ended the business dealings with the singer.

The Nation was reliably informed that the management deal was severed over allegations of gross indiscipline from the singer, who is also referred to as Black Diamond.

Sources also alleged that the singer had been battling with an addiction which is affecting his concentration on career and jobs.

Another source claimed that the singer's management team had been working on rebranding his career and giving him a facelift without success.

"He has been going through issues with his management over his gross indiscipline. They have been trying to rebrand him and get him back on his position in the industry but he seems to be thwarting every effort of the management deal.

Wande has a good heart but he's battling an addiction and it's affecting concentration," another source informed.

The Nation contacted the singer but his phone numbers were unreachable. However, when contacted, Fajana declined to speak on the allegations saying he has no comment.

Wande Coal became a popular music star in Nigeria after a chance meeting with erstwhile partners, D'Banj and Don Jazzy.

He released his debut album, 'Mushin to Mohits' in 2009 under Mo'Hits Records imprint. He went on to release several hit singles and did major collaborations with several music acts across Africa.

The singer joined Mavin Records after the fall of Mo'Hits record and quit the record label after releasing an album. He has since released many singles under his self-owned Black Diamond records.

Tensions rise as prominent singer shot dead in Ethiopian capital

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:00 AM PDT

The fatal shooting of a prominent Ethiopian singer in the capital Addis Ababa sparked rising tensions in the city on Tuesday, with calls for demonstrations circulating online.

Hachalu Hundessa was shot and killed in the city's suburb of Gelan Condominiums on Monday evening, local media reported.

The killing has reportedly sparked unrest.

On Tuesday, a dpa reporter said the internet had been shut down, major roads were blocked, tyres were being burned and smoke was seen billowing across the city.

The German Embassy in Addis Ababa sent out a warning, advising people to avoid large crowds and driving through the city, citing calls for demonstrations on social media.

The context to the singer's death was not initially clear, although the embassy said Hundessa's supporters had blamed security forces and "assume a political motive" for the crime.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his condolences and tweeted that an investigation was currently under way.

Hachalu's music is considered by many to advocate the rights of Ethiopia's Oromo ethnic group, the largest in the multi-ethnic state, who have long believed they are being neglected by government.

Ongoing protests in the Oromia and Amhara regions ultimately led to the resignation of the head of government and Abiy taking office in April 2018.

Abiy, who is also Oromo, is regarded as a reformer and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for, among other things, his attempts to pacify the region.

However, ethnic tensions and conflicts in the country have increased again under his rule.

Ini Edo urges filmmakers to use films to curb drug abuse

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Ini Edo has urged filmmakers to produce more movies that preach against drug abuse.

The actress recently made the remark at the virtual MTN ASAP's Drug Convos, in commemorating International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Edo stressed that there is a need to use movies to show the adverse effects of drug abuse.

"The National Film and Video Censors Board has a huge role to play in this. If you are telling a drug-related success story, there has to be a certain result that shows that if you get into this type of lifestyle, this is what you are likely to get at the end of the day."

Edo admitted that what many young people see in films is the good side of drug abuse, saying, "they may be thinking, 'oh, I need to be high to perform which is probably what they see on TV and on social media but they don't get to see the adverse effect of abusing drugs and how damaging it can be on young people."

Joining Edo on the need to educate more people on the adverse effects of drug abuse, Chairman, MTN Foundation, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi reiterated the need for collaboration in the fight against substance abuse.

"Through the Anti-Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP), the MTN Foundation hopes to communicate the urgency required to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse in our society.

Our aim is to create a drug-free Nigeria in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. We are happy that various guilds, organisations, and active centres have come together to support this cause."

"It is our duty to build a healthier and cleaner community for Nigerians and this can only be done through an alliance against drug abuse."

Beyoncé features Shatta Wale in her new film “Black is King”

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:00 AM PDT

The new film which premieres internationally on July 31 was inspired by her soundtrack for Disney's reboot of "The Lion King".

American singer Beyoncé has released the official trailer for her upcoming film "Black is King" featuring Ghanaian dancehall star, Shatta Wale.

According to Beyoncé, "Black is King" is a visual album of her soundtrack "The Lion King: The Gift".

Aside from Shatta Wale, Beyoncé also collaborated with other top African artistes such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Mr Eazi on the soundtrack. It also featured American stars including Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Jessie Reyez, Pharrell, and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

Announcing the visual album, Beyonce accompanied the trailer on her Instagram page with a long piece which reads:

""Black Is King" is a labor of love. It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year. I've given it my all and now it's yours. It was originally filmed as a companion piece to "The Lion King: The Gift" soundtrack and meant to celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry. I could never have imagined that a year later, all the hard work that went into this production would serve a greater purpose.

The events of 2020 have made the film's vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books.

With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy.

I spent a lot of time exploring and absorbing the lessons of past generations and the rich history of different African customs. While working on this film, there were moments where I've felt overwhelmed, like many others on my creative team, but it was important to create a film that instills pride and knowledge.

I only hope that from watching, you leave feeling inspired to continue building a legacy that impacts the world in an immeasurable way. I pray that everyone sees the beauty and resilience of our people.

This is a story of how the people left MOST BROKEN have EXTRAORDINARY gifts. Thank you to Blitz, Emmanuel, Ibra, Jenn, Pierre, Dikayl, Kwasi and all the brilliant creatives. Thank you to all at Disney for giving this Black woman the opportunity to tell this story.

This experience has been an affirmation of a grander purpose. My only goal is that you watch it with your family and that it gives you pride.

Love y'all, B"

"Black is King" was written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé.
