Grammy awards rename ‘World Music’ category to ‘Global Music’ to avoid ‘connotations of colonialism’

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 10:30 PM PST

The Grammys have announced its decision to change the name of their World Music Album category to Global Music Album to avoid "connotations of colonialism".

The world music album category was first introduced in 1991 to highlight "international non-Western classical music, international non-American and non-British traditional folk music, international cross-cultural music based on the previously mentioned genres as well as international recordings of world beat, world jazz (with a higher percentage of world than jazz music), world pop, and cross-cultural music."

In a new statement from the Recording Academy, the institution said the category needed to be updated to "a more relevant, modern and inclusive term."

It was also noted that the change "symbolizes a departure from the connotations of colonialism, folk, and 'non-American' that the former term embodied."

The statement read: "As we continue to embrace a truly global mindset, we update our language to reflect a more appropriate categorization that seeks to engage and celebrate the current scope of music from around the world.

"Over the summer we held discussions with artists, ethnomusicologists, and linguists from around the world who determined that there was an opportunity to update the best world music album category toward a more relevant, modern, and inclusive term."

"The change symbolizes a departure from the connotations of colonialism, folk, and 'non-American' that the former term embodied while adapting to current listening trends and cultural evolution among the diverse communities it may represent."

"Global Music will continue to provide a home for influential music from all parts of the globe yet bringing with it a fresh perspective fueled by authenticity, diversity, and direct inclusion into our process."

The move met with approval from two artists including Nigerian music executive and singer, Bankulli.

Bankulli, who is featured on Beyonce's "Lion King" album, said: "Global Music provides a more inclusive awards platform to artists from relevant new genres. The term is encompassing of what is happening today and looks to the future for better representation."

Haitian DJ-producer Michael Brun added, "Global Music is the future of music. As the world continues to become more interconnected, music culture no longer has borders. The fusion of sounds breeds innovation, and global music artists are at the forefront of that movement. I'm happy to see the Recording Academy working to adapt to the changing landscape and celebrate excellence from around the globe."

The Grammys created the best world music album category in 1992, with winners since including Ravi Shankar, Gilberto Gil, and three-time recipient Angélique Kidjo.

The nominations for the 2021 Grammys will be announced on 24 November.

Adetiba hinted on the commencement of production around September 3 with an Instagram post where she expressed gratitude for the cast of the project.

View this post on Instagram

Of all the things I am grateful to @kingofboysmovie Sequel for, one of the most important is the honour of being able to work with some incredible names that have been on my director's bucket list for a while now. Yesterday was the incomparably talented @manuelbimbo as #HabibMogaji. His ability to embody a character, and then mold both their dialogue and "still" as his device to elevate a scene, is the stuff young actors' dreams are made of. I've had a newer introduction to @iamefaiwara's acting career, but he continues to show EVERYDAY that we made the right choice in him to play the weighty character of "Dapo Banjo" in the KOB Sequel. There's one thing to believe it yourself, and hope the rest of the world comes round to see and appreciate the reason why an actor choice for a character was made, but when crew members stay pulling you to the side with urgency, and all the want to speak about is gush on how amazing Efa as an actor is... Then one can confidently rest in the confidence that they've done something right ❤️ #KOBSeasonHasOfficiallyReturned #YearOfTheReturn #KOBSequel #StuffOfKings

While Adetiba is yet to confirm if the sequel will be a feature film or a series, she recently revealed that it will be exclusive to Netflix.

The upcoming film will star Sola Sobowale, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Bimbo Manuel, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Toni Tones, Efa Iwara, Deyemi Okanlawon among other yet to be unveiled cast.

Singer Muma Gee – It was a huge disgrace that my marriage failed

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:00 AM PST

Veteran Nigerian singer, Muma Gee has opened up on her failed marriage to Nollywood actor, Prince Eke.

Speaking in an interview with Sun News online, she spoke of her 2016 split from Prince Eke, who she had married in 2011.

Contrary to the allegations of infidelity which Eke was said to have cited as the reason for the split, the singer claimed her ex-husband woke up one morning and decided he was walking out of the marriage to her dismay.

The mom of three said:

"I believe that one of the duties I have to fulfill here on earth is motherhood, and that includes getting married and building a family with a partner.

In fact, where I come from, we do not believe in divorce or separation. Coupled with my Christian background, it was a huge disgrace that my marriage failed; but God in heaven knows I did my best and the fault wasn't from me.

If you have two partners and one wasn't ready to settle down; and per adventure, you get involved and are willing to sacrifice everything to make sure the family works, but this partner just picks his bag and says, 'I am done with this stage of my life, I am going kids or no kids!'

I was so shocked I called it the 8th wonder of the world. I never dreamed or imagined a situation where I, who has been so committed, was being treated so shabbily.

And the most devastating part of it was to have built a career for years which I put on hold just to kick-start something, and this person wakes up one day and says look 'I can't go on with this'.

Then I got the shocker of my life when I read in the news that I was frolicking with different men. That was the ultimate bullsh*t! I have always been a reserved person. I may look crazy and wild on the outside, but for a man to come up with such lies is outrageous!

I have never drunk alcohol nor prostituted since I was born, and even as a single woman, I never messed around with men. I have always been a focused person, and then suddenly someone is saying all these lies against me? It was a campaign of calumny.

He did not just say that, he went online and posted it just to dent the image I had built over the years. It was crazy!"

Do you know how many beautiful and endowed girls the @MBuhari administration have used to attempt my downfall? It is not me you will do as a former military ruler did to one Archbishop. Tufiakwa! I don't want to meet you!"
