Slaves passed these 5 notable stops on their journey of no return

Over the course of three centuries, more than 500,000 Africans were sold into slavery through Badagry's coast.

From the 16th Century till its abolition in 1886, the coastal town of Badagry, now a part of Lagos State, was the final point of departure for indigenes who were sold into slavery.

Decades ago, millions from the hinterland were bundled into ships and delivered to traders in European and American markets. Today, it has become a destination for tourists who want a slice of its well-preserved ties to the transatlantic slave trade.

Some of these structures were important steps on what is now known as "the journey of no return"

Here are 5 important points on the Badagry slave route.

1 Mobee Family House & Slave Relics Museum:
History has told us that the coast of West Africa was a fertile area for slavers in the 1800s because the rulers, chiefs, and warriors collaborated with the foreigners to capture their own people.

At the height of the trade in Badagry, the white cap Chief Sunbu Mobee traded many of his people with the Portuguese in exchange for valuables. This dark reputation was tied to the family until his son ascended the Mobee throne and abolished the trade in 1886.

Today, the relics of the family's participation in slavery and many of the tools used to capture and hold captives can be found in the Mobee Family Slave Relics Museum, which sits at the top of Mobee Street in Badagry.

2 Gberefu Island:
The Island, founded in the 15th Century, is geographically, a part of Badagry. However, due to its prime position between the hinterland and the ocean, Gberefu became a dreaded path to the Point of No Return.

Slave traders and warriors under the charge of Chief Sunbu Mobee also captured inhabitants of the Island, young and old, and put them on the path that their home was already feared for.

Reports of the time claim that as many as half a million people were sold into slavery from Gberefu between 1518 and 1880. Today, the Island is a sandy beach enclave, untouched.

3 Spirit Attenuation Well:
Spirituality was a major element of the slave trade, especially in Badagry. Along the path in Gberefu Island, there sits a well bordered by a small wall that discourages anyone from drinking from it.

During the slave trade, the well is said to have been charmed by shamans and chiefs. Slaves on their way to the Americas were given water from the well to forget their home and cut their psychological ties to Badagry.

It is said that the water would take effect 3 months into the journey, supposedly leaving the slave with no connection to anything but the lives they had been sold into. The locals claim that no one has drunk from the well in over a century.

4 The Ocean Path:
From the point of their capture, African slaves were grouped by gender and age and shackled with a repulsive assortment of chains.

They were led along the path from Gberefu to the Spirit Well but their captive reality mostly set in when they got on the final phase, on the path to the ocean.

With the wet breeze of the Atlantic bearing down on them, the slaves would walk in lines along dusty footpaths, bordered by shrubs and palm trees. Home was in the background; before them lay the final phase of a damning journey

5 The Point of No Return:
For all the trauma of their experiences and the agony of their journey from home, the Point of No Return was the place where African slaves were finally confronted with their future as slaves.

Here, at the shores of the Atlantic, the captives were handed over to the Europeans. As the name suggests, it is said that anyone who made it to this point had no chance of returning home.

It was here at the edge of a place they called home that the slaves would see an iteration of the bloody price they had to pay for the color of their skin.

Peace looms as the popular Afrobeat singer, Peter Okoye and his brother, Jude Okoye reportedly follow each other on Instagram.

Things seemed to have begun to take a favourable turn after Peter Okoye took his twin brother's kids shopping recently after a long period of being at loggerheads with each other.

It was also alleged that Peter and Paul Okoye followed each other on the photo-sharing app a few moments later.

However, speculations about a peaceful trio have been strengthened as they all seem to have put their differences behind to give harmony a try once more.

Speaking during an interview with Sunday Scoop, Jaypaul said, "I have come to realise that the world does not really care about one. There are people who care about one truly but at the end of the day, one cannot please everybody. I am that guy that makes sure nobody is angry but really, not everyone would be happy with one."

"If one is a good guy, people would chastise one for being a good guy and they would say one is being fake. They are the ones that also said I left money and went for love during my stay in BBN. Can't one pursue two things at the same time?"

The 29-year-old also maintained that fame would not change him. He said, "I have been able to manage my fame because I do not look down on anybody. I am a street person although I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I feel I have seen it all. Fame will not change me because I will be who I have always been for a long time."

Jaypaul also stated that life after BBN had been an adventure for him. He said, "Life after BBN has been an adventure because it is what I have always wanted and worked for. Now that I've got it, I am asking myself, 'Do I really want this'? It has been an amazing roller coaster. The reception from fans has been amazing. I have seen beautiful people with beautiful hearts and they send me regular messages of how wonderful I am. That is amazing."

The Cross River State-born reality star also stated that he had always wanted to be on television. He said, "The projects I am currently working on include music and other things on television. I have always wanted to appear on television. I want to host the biggest shows and gigs, and I have started that already. I have also been pushing my business, Made in Calabar. I have done a few advertisements, and I have been exploring my creative energy."

Reactions as Peter Okoye takes brother, Paul’s kids out on shopping in the US —“Las las they’ll reconcile”

Singer, Peter Okoye has wowed the hearts of fans after a video of him taking his twin brother, Paul's kids shopping in the US went viral.

The brothers of defunct music group, PSquare are not on good terms at the moment, despite several pleas from fans and colleagues that they settle their differences and come back together.

However, it seems their strained relationship did not affect the relationship they have with each other's kids, as a video making the rounds on Instagram shared by Paul's wife, Anita Okoye, shows Peter spending quality time with his twin brother's children in the US.

Reality Star, Khloe Laments, Wants To Stop Being A Nigerian

Being a citizen of Nigeria has been declared as a curse by reality TV star, Oluwabusayo Abiri, popularly known as Khloe.

According to Khloe, it is a curse to be a Nigerian both at home and abroad.

The former Big Brother Naija Double Wahala housemate took to her Snapchat story to state that though she felt being a Nigerian was a curse, she was going to change it.

She said, "Being a Nigerian is a curse home and abroad. I'm going to change that."

Reacting to her post, music video director Buari Olamilekan, professionally known as Unlimited LA, said that he disagreed with her outburst.
 
He said, "I disagree. Though there's a way they see us(green passport). But trust me, if you have an honest job, and you're in a foreign country for a genuine purpose with all your documents intact, you won't have any problems."

In response, Khloe gave details of an ordeal went through with a Nigerian bank card.

She said, "Yah all Nigerian bank cards stopped working on you in the middle of nowhere and you get stranded? I don't think so because most of you never even crossed the border. Abeg make una leave me o."(sic)

Cheque, Lashes Out At EFCC For Assaulting And Arresting Him

Nigerian singer, Akanbi Bamidele Brett, popularly known as Cheque has called out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Twitter.

According to Cheque, he was unjustly taken by the officials of the commission. He didn't reveal why he was taken or what he is being accused of, but he informed his fans that he was assaulted by them.

Sharing the ugly experience, Cheque questioned the Federal Government on why they will allow EFCC to harass and maltreat the youths.

While many sympathized with him, Others decided to mock his plight. They reminded him of the time EFCC arrested socialite, Obi Cubana and he spent three days in their custody.

Former Big Brother Naija Housemate Tboss Idowu has lectured a fan after insinuating that she is going off the limelight.

Instagram user, pilesburn claimed that the number of likes on Tboss's Instagram posts has reduced, and many of her fans are beginning to forget her.

Responding to this, Tboss said she does not post on Instagram to get like, notwithstanding it is adorable when people appreciate what she posts on her page, but that doesn't change anything for her.

Gulder Ultimate Search Episode 9: Epic Betrayal And Gang Up Against Irin Clan, Oreva’s Painful Eviction And More

In what can only be called an epic betrayal in last night's episode of Gulder Ultimate Search Season  12, Clan Irin loss was secured by the other two clans in their Break The Tiles task.

Yesterday's task was interesting because it was the first task that the clans competed directly against each other. Each clan had several boxes lined up in a row with tiles on top of the box. Each clan needed to attack the other clans' tiles, and the clan with the most tiles broken at the end of the task will be the losing clan. It seemed to be a game that required strength, accuracy and a little bit of cunning.

In honour of his clan switch from Iroko to Amo, Damola was given the riddle that revealed what they needed to break the tiles – metal balls. Each clan selected a member to search the jungle area for balls that were hidden.

When each clan retrieved their balls, the throwing began. Tosin and Ishamel launched the game with direct throws against opposing clans, and that set it off. We can't count how many misses every clan had, but it was a lot.

It was soon apparent that there was a shift in how the Iroko and Amo clan were tossing their balls. Irin seemed to be the focus.
 
With two clans aiming for their tiles, Irin's loss was swift and sure. Tobechukwu of Iroko dealt the final blow as he knocked off the last of Irin's clan tiles.

As the search was for a losing team, Iroko and Amo had an unspoken agreement to remove Irin from the game. Unfortunately for Clan Irin, they couldn't break enough of any other clan's tile to save themselves, and they lost the task.

At the place of the talking drum, it was time for Clan Irin to be tested. The anchor Toke Makinwa asked them to play a game of Fireside Questions.

Chidimma, Omokhafe, Damilola all answered questions correctly. Oreva missed his question, and Tosin fielded it. At the end of it all, Oreva could not meet up to challenge, and he was evicted.

Singer, Zlatan Ibile has acquired some really expensive glasses and ear studs for himself, worth a whooping $31,000 (N12.9 million).

The singer bought two diamond encrusted ear studs that cost $16k (N6.7 million) in total, with each of them costing $8,000 dollars!

He also bought expensive designer glasses for $15,000 (an estimated N6.2 million) from a luxury jeweler abroad.


In a video making the rounds on social media, Zlatan Ibile could be seen with celebrity dancer, Poco Lee as he tried on his new glasses and ear studs.

Celebrity couples, Teddy A and Bam Bam weigh in on the question of checking each other's phones despite being a couple.

The BBNaija stars in a recent interview both agreed on a unison conclusion of the disrespect that comes with checking each other's phones.

Bam Bam further added that she would rather avoid putting herself in a situation that could cause a dispute in her relationship than crossing such boundaries with her husband.

"Sometimes I just rather avoid situations that could escalate into something serious, and the communion that we have together is way more important," Bam Bam says.

Teddy A interrupted to add, "and the respect we have for each other. of course, it is disrespectful."

Simi mocked over comment on how air host gave daughter ‘fake awww’ –“Trying to create content by force”

Reactions trail the popular Afro Pop singer, Simi Kosoko after leaving remarks on how an air host expressed 'fake awww' to her daughter, Adejare.

Simi had taken to Twitter to express concern over a fake love showered at her baby girl by an air host during an encounter.

"This air host guy really did one fake aww for Deja. Is it by force to say aw for baby. I did not greet you. She did not greet you. Why you fake aww my baby. God save you that I'm working on myself. Ko ko aw buruku danu," she wrote.


This however was followed by mixed reactions on the definition of a fake awww and how she could tell of its originality.

"How does she know the awww was fake? Either ways the hair host was just trying to be nice and welcoming it's part of his job," a user wrote in reaction.
