Here are 4 benefits of Garlic to the body you didn't know

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 11:30 PM PST

Modern science has confirmed many of these beneficial health effects of garlic.

A common ingredient in every kitchen, it's the organic sulfur compound allicin in garlic that gives it its pungent smell and makes it a healthy addition to your diet.

Garlic also contains useful minerals such as phosphorous, calcium, and iron, as well as trace minerals like iodine, sulfur, and chlorine, which are also present in the cloves.

Below are some of its many benefits of garlic.

Protects skin and hair
Garlic protects the skin from the effect of free radicals and slows down the depletion of collagen which leads to loss of elasticity in aging skin.

Garlic's antioxidants can clear up your skin by killing acne-causing bacteria. Research also shows rubbing raw garlic over pimples can clear them away. Be aware, though, that it could cause a burning sensation on your skin.

Aids in digestion
Daily inclusion of garlic in your diet aids in eliminating any digestive problems. The herb assists in the normal functioning of the intestines for good digestion. Even swelling or irritation of the gastric canal may be rectified with garlic as a treatment.

Treats cold and boosts immunity
Taking 2-3 cloves of raw or cooked garlic a day or sipping some garlic tea (with a touch of honey or ginger to lift the taste) is not only going to relieve a stuffed nose and cure a cold but also build your immunity.

Anti-bacterial and Anti-parasitic
Garlic can be used as an antibiotic to treat bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections.

If you have athlete's foot or ringworm, soak your feet in garlic water or rub raw garlic on your feet to attack the itch-causing fungus.

How to survive dry season in Nigeria

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 11:00 PM PST

It's that time of the year again when the dry air attacks our nostrils, there's dust everywhere and the skin tends to get ashy quickly.

The Harmattan season is characterised by dry, draughty air, dust and cold. Heres how to survive the intense weather.

The season of Harmattan, from Twi word haramata, originates from the dry and dusty harmattan trade winds which blows from the Sahara desert over West Africa. It usually comes between the end of November and the middle of March. Visiting Nigeria for the first time during this period might give a whole different experience so here's all you need to know about Nigeria's two seasons.

In some parts of Nigeria, such as Lagos, harmattan can hardly be felt during these periods. However, in places closer to the Sahara/Gulf of Guinea which are in the direction of the wind, harmattan effects can be quite severe. For many states, harmattan is characterised by very cold temperatures, especially in the mornings/nights and very hot weather in the afternoons. The humidity also drops really low and the air is dusty. This means the skin has a tendency to dry up quickly and the wind can be very assaulting to the respiratory system.

Here are some tips on how to survive harmattan.

1. Stay hydrated
It's normal to become dehydrated and get thirsty very easily at this time, so avoid carbonated drinks at and juices but rather drink at least 1.5 liters of water every day as this will help keep your whole body system working properly.

2. Adjust outfits
The weather is usually really bright and hot in the afternoon but could get very cold at night. To be on the safer side, put on warm clothing when going to bed at night or when going out in the mornings. You can loosen up your clothes as the day heats up.

3. Take vitamin C
This will help to reduce the likelihood of you contracting the flu otherwise known as catarrh. As there are dust and cold everywhere, taking vitamins generally will help combat the negative effects they could have on the body.

4. Moisturise
Let your lip balm and moisturiser/petroleum jelly/oil be your best friends. Always have a lip balm and moisturiser in your bag, pocket or somewhere easily accessible. Apply the balm on your lip and the moisturiser on the skin when any of them are starting to get dry.

5. Be careful with fires
Fires tend to get aggravated during harmattan. Avoid burning indiscriminately and if you have to burn anything, make sure it is attended and well monitored. Most fire accidents happen in this season because everywhere is dry and the fire can travel easily without restrictions.

6. Avoid dusty areas
For asthmatic patients, the dusty winds of harmattan can trigger attacks. This is why they should stay away from dusty areas and have their inhalers on them at all times. Wearing a nose/face mask is advisable during this period when one has to have contact with dusty environment.

7. Wear protective hairstyles
For Nigerian females who mostly have 4c hair, harmattan can be terrible for the tips. It can cause dry tips and hair breakage. Wear hairstyles that keep your ends hidden such as braids, tie scarves and keep hair moisturised.

8. Avoid flying
Flights tend to get cancelled or rescheduled a lot during harmattan due to intense haze. Avoid flying if you don't need the hassle and go for other means of transport instead.

5 must-have back pain relief tips for women with big breasts

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 10:30 PM PST

Having very big breasts can place excess weight on the chest and without adequate support from the surrounding muscles and the rest of the body, the weight of the breasts can cause severe pain.

It's often hard to maintain good posture, and even lead to chronic back problems.

The upper part of the spine is built to withstand a significant amount of weight and it acts as an anchor to the rib cage and supports the upper body. However, like with lower back pain, upper back pain is most often caused by strain on the muscles and ligaments from poor posture and repetitive motions.

For women with very large breasts, it doesn't take hours spent hunched over a computer or a vigorous gym session to cause upper back pain. The sheer weight of their breasts alone can be enough to cause back pain, sometimes even leading to long-term chronic pain that lasts for months or years.

Furthermore, women with particularly large breasts tend to feel self-conscious about the size of their busts and unconsciously tend to hunch over in an effort to minimise their size which can worsen existing back pain.

The chronic pain can spread from the back to their necks and even affect their shoulders because heavy-duty bra straps dig into their skin and leave permanent and painful marks.

1. Try alternative exercise

Trying out alternative exercises can be a great way of managing breast-related back pain as well as strengthening your body and muscles in general. You can try yoga for back and shoulder pain and learning to relax your body. The gentle stretching releases muscle and joint tension, and stiffness, and also increases flexibility.

If weight-training is more your thing, here's a workout for preventing back pain. Working with a physiotherapist or personal trainer can improve posture and encourage weight loss in women who are overweight.

2. Wear the right bra size

Studies have proven that women with larger breasts were more likely to wear the incorrect bra size. It's a common belief the wrong fit, and the poor posture that results from it, can lead to upper back pain.

Researchers concluded bra fit appeared to be unrelated to pain. But if a bra was poorly fitted, it could impair its function as breast support. This could cause certain levels of discomfort and lead to pain and permanent damage.

Wearing a customised bra or a sports bra that is specially designed is ideal because these types of bras can help distribute and support the weight of large breasts, especially for women with narrow backs, who have a more concentrated distribution of weight than women whose backs are wider.

3. Try and lose excess weight

If you have a slim frame, chances are that any excess weight will contribute to more pressure on your back and shoulders. Also, bear in mind that breasts are essentially lumps of fat. Achieving a healthy weight will make both your frame and breasts lighter, which, in turn, can alleviate unnecessary tension and chronic neck and back pain.

To lose weight sustainable, aim to lose two pounds weekly. Come up with a weekly meal plan. If you are morbidly obese, consulting with a licensed nutritionist and your doctor to come up with a strict, monitored weight loss program.

4. Medication

Taking an occasional over-the-counter pain killer when upper back pain strikes is just fine and an immediate way to relieve breast pain. If the pain is too much, your doctor can prescribe stronger medication to help manage the more severe pain caused by large breasts.

However, keep in mind that painkillers for back pain caused by large breasts are not intended as a long-term solution and if pain becomes chronic, you may have to seek alternative solutions.

5. See a specialist

A leading back doctor can also help address your back pain and put together and effective and non-invasive treatment plan to provide back pain relief.

Your first step is telling your doctor who will be more than happy to refer you and get you the help you need.

If you are suffering from upper back pain due to large breasts, talk with your doctor. Together, you can put together a plan that will be effective for you.

5 ways to take care of your hair during harmattan

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 09:30 PM PST

How do you get harmattan out of your hair?

It isn't only your body that feels the effect of the harmattan season, your hair does too.

Your hair can feel very dry and brittle. It doesn't look as good and as healthy.

Here are some hair care tips for the season:

1. Moisturise and seal
You should be moisturising your hair a lot during this season.

Use a leave-in conditioner, and thick creams like shea butter to moisturise your hair and seal it in with extra virgin olive oil, Jamaican black castor oil, or peppermint oil.

You can also use a hair spritz that packs oil, conditioner and water to give your hair the required glow.

2. Co-wash instead of shampooing
Shampoos, especially sulphate-based ones, are the worst things for your hair this season because they eliminate much-needed moisture.

The next best option is to co-wash using a cleansing conditioner. It won't deplete your hair of moisture but it will condition it.

3. Pre-poo before washing
Pre-pooing moisturises your hair before actually washing it since we know shampoos can cause damage. You can use olive oil, coconut oil, honey, banana, and yoghurt to pre-poo.

4. Use a lot of oil on your hair
Be liberal with oil and oil-based products, massage your scalp deeply with it.

5. Make protective styles
This is the most important thing. You have to protect your hair from environmental damage. Use wigs, braids and twists to protect your hair.

Do not also forget to sleep with a silk bonnet.

Check out 5 important ingredients in any harmattan moisturiser

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 09:00 PM PST

What ingredients should you look out for in a moisturiser this season?

The weather is getting drier than it has ever been all year round because of the harmattan. A common piece of advice is to moisturise your skin but that seems very vague.

Here are the most important ingredients in any moisturising lotion.

1. Glycerin
Glycerin is a humectant which means it draws water into the skin. It has no colour or smell and helps with skin inflammation and healing.

2. Hyaluronic acid
This is also a humectant that draws moisture into the skin and reduces the appearance of cracks that comes with extremely dry skin.

3. Shea butter
Even raw shea butter is extremely moisturising. It reduces dryness in the skin and hydrates the skin.

4. Ceramides
Ceramides reduce inflammation, flaking and skin dryness. They prevent the skin from losing water and leave it supple, hydrated, and protected.

5. Vitamin E
This is naturally occurring and may be gotten from food but it is also perfect for the skin. Vitamin E can be found in almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil and jojoba oil.

Vitamin E protects the skin from free radicals that might harm it and it also hydrates the skin.

Although petroleum and parrafin wax moisturises the skin, they can make some people sweat.

Ooni of Ife’s wife announces end of marriage with monarch – “I did my best to endure and make it work”

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 04:00 AM PST

The dismal news coming from the Palace of the Ooni of Ife is that the marriage of the first class Yoruba monarch to prophetess Naomi has ended.

On Instagram, Naomi verified the news and clarified a few points.

She said she went into the marriage with love in her heart and a willingness to serve.

According to her, she did her best to "endure" and "smile through the struggles" but she has now decided to leave her three years marriage.

She further stated that her decision to leave is not influenced by the fact that the Ooni of Ife is married to another queen.

She also refuted rumours that she had another child, a daughter.

According to her, the girl is her niece and her son for the king remains the only child she's ever had.

"At this moment, I announce that I shall no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife," she wrote.

This is, however, not the King's first marriage that has ended in a divorce.

She wrote:

"I bless the Lord almighty for His faithfulness in the last 3 years of my marriage. In life's journey, it isn't how far. Still, how well, indeed though satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it.

"Few impressions I would love to correct. If anyone knows otherwise, they are free to come up with facts. Let it be known that this decision to move on did not come because his majesty is married to another queen. As many would love to assume, throughout our life as a couple, I was the only married wife to him. There were side attractions, but it was never an issue.

"I never approached him with any revelation of any sort, as many believed he contacted me first and made his proposal known several months later.
The marriage was not an arranged one, as many have misconstrued. I never knew the prophetess said to have introduced me to him. Instead, he introduced her to me after I agreed to marry him. I was only being polite out of respect for him.

"I have never been pregnant all my life before Tadenikawo; my son is my first ever pregnancy with medical reports to back it up. The girl who is said to be my daughter is my niece. I did my best to endure and make it work; many times, I smiled through the struggle, but I have finally realised I had just one assignment, my son, and when God is done, He is done.

"He chose Saul to be king, and when He was done, He told the prophet Samuel I have moved on. Religion was never an issue between us; please refer to my interview on News Central TV. Instead, His Majesty has a picture he would love the world to see and perceive him as and another one which is his true self.

"Today I announce the beginning of a new dawn and the close of a chapter. Today, I am a mother to God's unique gift. I am no longer a slave to my thoughts of perfection. I, at this moment, announce that I shall no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife but as the Queen of the people and mother of my adorable Prince."

"He is God's way of saying I know about it all. In situations like this, there will be aggrieved persons. I, at this moment, appeal to all parties involved to allow the peace of God with the consciousness that there is a lovely little boy between us. I thank all of my prayer partners and loved ones. I remain committed to all of my projects, charity work and ministry. In this new season, I shall be focusing on God only,"

JAY-Z Replies Rick Ross Who Suggested A Verzuz Battle –Why ‘No One’ Can Compete Against Me

Posted: 25 Dec 2021 02:00 AM PST

After Rick Ross suggested a verzuz battle between him and Iconic rapper, JAY-Z, the latter has reacted.

Earlier there were speculations that JAY-Z may take on Rick Ross after the "Gold Roses" rapper said there was a possibility they'd battle during an appearance on The Real earlier this month.

Ross said "JAY-Z… Yeah! Why not? To me, that's what makes Verzuz special because it brings out the best in both parties. That's a possibility, but I gotta give my flowers to the big homie."

However during a recent Twitter Spaces conversation with singer Alicia Keys, 52-year-old JAY-Z said "no one" can compete against him.

He said;

"No disrespect… everyone's amazing. No one can stand on that stage with me. There's not a chance in hell. I don't care how long it is.

"You got to stand in front of the 'Grammy Family Freestyle' live? No one has ever even seen me perform that, you got to stand in front of that? That ain't never going to happen."

Verzuz was created by rappers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. Through the entertainment platform producers, songwriters and artists compete against each other.

Last month, JAY-Z made history as the artist with the most Grammy nominations. The rapper received three more nominations from the Recording Academy on Tuesday, bringing his total count to 83.
