Saraki States Reasons Why PDP Agreed To Hold National Convention In Port Harcourt

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:34 PM PDT

Dr. Bukola Saraki, Senate President, National Leader and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, has confirmed that he was okay with the choice of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as venue for the party's national convention.

The Senate President, made the statement, after the party's 83rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Friday.

"We all agreed to hold it in Port Harcourt.

"Some of the issues that we are having before, which were reported in papers, we discussed that. Everybody decided that we should stay with the party.

"Where tempers flared, people apologised and everyone felt, yes there was a commitment to assure everybody that there will be free and fair primaries," Dr. Saraki stated.

According to some reports, some aspirants had feared that the convention could be hijacked by Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.

However, it was gathered that the party hierarchy had insisted the convention would go on at the venue, saying the choice was a "unanimous decision."

50 Million Facebook Accounts Breached By Hackers

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:03 PM PDT

Facebook

Mr. Guy Rosen, the Vice President, Product Management of Facebook, says 50 million Facebook accounts were affected by security issue.

Rosen, in a statement on Friday, said that in the afternoon of Tuesday, September 25, Facebook's engineering team discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts.

He said that the company was taking the issue seriously and wanted to let everyone know what happened, and the immediate action taken to protect people's security.

According to him, investigation was still in its early stages.

"But it is clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code that impacted "View As", a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

"This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens, which they could then use to take over people's accounts.

"Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook, so they don't need to re-enter their password every time they use the app," he said.

The Vice President said that Facebook had already fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement.

He said that the company had reset the access tokens of the almost 50 million accounts in order to protect their security.

Rosen said that Facebook had also taken precautionary step of resetting access tokens for another 40 million accounts that had been subject to a "View As" look-up in the last year.

He said that as a result, around 90 million people would now have to log back into Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook Login.

According to him, after they have logged back in, people will get a notification at the top of their News Feed explaining what happened.

"We are temporarily turning off the "View As" feature, while we conduct a thorough security review.

"This attack exploited the complex interaction of multiple issues in our code. It stemmed from a change we made to our video uploading feature in July 2017, which impacted "View As".

"The attackers not only needed to find this vulnerability and use it to get an access token, they then had to pivot from that account to others to steal more tokens.

"Since we have only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed," he said.

See Oyetola's Acceptance Speech As Osun Governor-elect

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 04:56 PM PDT

Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola

Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, said the election was free and fair and thanked the people of Osun State for trusting him with their votes.

The Governor-elect also showed appreciation, President Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent governor, Rauf Aregbesola, for creating the atmosphere for a democratic process.

Read full speech below:

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR ELECT OF OSUN, GBOYEGA OYETOLA, AFTER BEING DECLARED WINNER OF THE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION HELD ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2018

Election into the Office of the Governor of the State of Osun was held on Saturday September 22, 2018, in which I flew the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a contest with 47 other candidates, representing their different political parties.

From the field report and the tally of the ballots, there was enthusiastic turnout at the polls. The huge number of candidates who vied for the office was unprecedented. Though there were few glitches and challenges here and there, the exercise was satisfactory. We can say there has been substantial compliance with the provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act.

However, the election was declared inconclusive after the first ballot and a rerun was slated for Thursday September 27, 2018 in seven polling units in Ife North, Ife South, Orolu and Osogbo Local Governments Areas of the State.

This was disappointing. We had enough evidence and field reports, including signed result sheets, from our agents that confirmed that we won outrightly. However, as democrats, we accepted the verdict in good faith and prepared for the rerun.

In the end, I was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after securing the highest number of votes cast in the election.

This election has been keenly contested, and a clear winner could not emerge until the tail end. Indeed, there was a dramatic twist in the end that kept us all on the edge and made Osun the focus of national and international attention. This is an indication of how democratic, free, fair and transparent the election was.

However, I cannot but observe that the election took place under a much more relaxed and freer atmosphere, compared with the previous elections, particularly the 2014 governorship election, during which the state was put under siege by the then Federal Government.

The democratic environment created by the APC under which this election was held is a clear indication of the great political development that has occurred in the past three years of our party's administration, under President Muhammadu Buhari.

This election is primarily a victory for democracy, rule of law and due process. It is a victory for the right of every citizen to participate in their own governance which democracy represents.

The victory is an affirmation by the people of Osun in the APC government that has been on the saddle in the past eight years; and the acceptance of our ideology. It is a positive affirmation of our people-friendly policies and the way we have steered the ship of state, even under the most challenging circumstances.

This is ultimately a victory for the people of Osun that have been given a voice and a hope of democratic and responsible leadership.

I will like to commend and congratulate INEC for successfully conducting a free, fair and credible governorship election. I congratulate also our party, the APC, in Nigeria and South West, for its well-deserved victory at the polls, wrapping up the South West states and giving it the opportunity to use the progressive platform it offers for accelerated development of the region. I also congratulate Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, under whom I cut my political teeth and whose tenure was on trial during the election.

I regard the mandate given to me by the good people of Osun as sacred and I am taking it seriously. Of course, I have been part of the new beginning that started eight years ago.

Nevertheless, in continuing the glorious path on which I am now very familiar, it is a new beginning for me. I am committing myself the more to the good governance of Osun and the welfare of the people.

I will run an inclusive and participatory government. I will consult with the party, workers, communities, traditional rulers, the civil society and the people of the state in their heterogeneity. I will engage the youth, tap into their ideas and enable them to unleash their creative energy in a positive way.

I pledge to serve God and humanity and the people of Osun with my whole being, without prejudice to religion, ethnicity, race and ideology.

I will like to thank the Almighty God for His grace and divine enablement upon my life; and for fulfilling His promise to bless the land and people of Osun through me.

I will like to thank our great party, APC, for the overwhelming support given to me all through the campaign and for believing in me. The leadership and members of our party nationally and locally laboured hard for my victory. Our National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, backed me to the hilt. I thank him.

The national campaign committee headed by Governor Umar Ganduje and all the APC governors have my commendations and infinite gratitude.

I will like to express my profound gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for his invaluable support and for leading a delegation of party and government officials to my campaign. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo did a yeoman's job. He made several trips to Osun and supported the campaign with all available resources.

My immense gratitude goes to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leader of leaders, for his selflessness and absolute commitment to my election campaign and for giving his all.

I cannot thank enough Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who gave me an opportunity to serve and who carried me on his shoulders when the going was tough.

I must thank also the coalition that emerged for the rerun, including Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Osun Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP) that wholeheartedly endorsed and supported my candidature.

I thank my lovely wife, Kafayat, and the children for believing in me and supporting me unreservedly. My wife, in particular, gave me the peace of mind and refreshing comfort at home.

I cannot end without thanking every member of my campaign team for their sacrifice, dedication and commitment. It is their victory as well.

I thank all the people of Osun, especially those who believe in our cause and voted for me. It is your victory. I thank our royal fathers, workers, transporters, market women and men.

The security agencies deserve commendation for keeping the peace and for their prompt response to every security challenge before, during and after the election.

I salute members of the media too for their coverage.

Once again, I congratulate and thank all member of APC in Osun for our hard-won victory.

I thank you all for your attention.

Ileri Oluwa ti se.

Osun a dara!

Wike Exposed By Deji Adeyanju As 'The APC Mole In PDP'(Video)

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:26 PM PDT

Deji Adeyanju

Deji Adeyanju, activist and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, has taken to his Twitter page to address the issue of PDP choice of PortHarcourt as venue of their 2018, convention which has already created some division amongst the party stakeholders.

In a series of successive tweets, the activist wrote:

As promised,

I will now tell you how Governor Wike is working with Buhari and his men for second term. Wike had constantly met with the former DSS DG, Lawan Daura & in July 2017, he signed an agreement with the former DSS DG in the presence of Chief of Staff Abba Kyari.

Watch video below:

10 out the 12 presidential aspirants opposed PH as convention venue, but Wike's puppet -Secondus connived with Delta governor who is Wike's friend to take the convention to PH against objections just to pave the way for the manipulation of the convention in Wike's domain.

The BoT of the party opposed taking the convention to PH since Wike has a vested interest & is supporting a candidate. But Secondus still took the convention to PH on the instruction of Wike the mole.
Today, Wike is threatening the party because God has exposed his plans.

Wike the mole is trying to play the same game Asiwaju Tinubu played in 2011 with Jonathan when he signed an agreement to produce a weak opposition candidate -Nuhu Ribadu against the then president but God has exposed him.

Almost all the presidential aspirants know the agreement Wike has signed with president Buhari.
The party should not beg Wike the mole. They should allow him to do his worse. Energy should be dissipated on how to produce a strong presidential candidate who can defeat Buhari.

The Board of Trustees and all other organs of the party must save PDP from Wike the mole. The naive supporters of Wike always claim that He is the one that has been funding the party since 2015. One must ask how?
Wike could not fund Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti, Osun, etc.

Wike the mole only funds the few hungry people in the party who run to Rivers State everytime they are broke. Wike can not fund a presidential election. He can not even fund elections in Rivers State and his next door neighbor Akwa Ibom in 2019.

The recent shaking up of Wike by EFCC with the arrest of Zenith Bank GMD over N117bn suspicious bank withdrawals by Wike is to put him in line after there were fears that he wanted to recind on the agreement.

Wike's arrogance and the way he threatens the party and its leaders publicly and privately comes from the fact that he has stolen Rivers State funds in his custody.

If the opposition like, let them be wise, if not: Na dem go SUFFER.

Ikeja Electric Set To Distribute 85,000 Prepaid Meters To Ikorodu, Ikeja, Oshodi, Abule Egba & Others

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 11:28 AM PDT

Add caption

Ikeja Electric, one of the major electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria, says it is deploying 85,000 new prepaid meters to bridge the metering gap in its business area.

In a statement seen by TheCable, the DisCo said this was done as part of its renewed commitment to deliver the yearnings of customers, and further close the metering gap within its network.

It added that "while abiding by the regulator's guideline which states that all customers have a right to a properly installed and functional meter, and un-metered customer should be issued with electricity bills strictly based on NERC's estimated billing methodology, it is also poised to reduce estimated billing with the deployment of prepaid meters".

The DisCo said it had therefore commenced the "roll-out of 85,000 meters to cover residential customers across its six Business Units," in its first batch of renewed metering drive.

The six business units include Ikeja, Abule-Egba, Akowonjo, Oshodi, Ikorodu and Shomolu .

According to Felix Ofulue, head, corporate communications, Ikeja Electric, the company remains resolute in its commitment to meter all its customers and narrow the metering gap as quickly as possible.

"Ikeja Electric wants to reassure customers and state clearly its plans to progressively reduce estimated billing thereby building customers trust in our services. At the moment, prepaid meters are being installed in different communities across the network," he said.

"While in other localities, pre-installation activities are ongoing and between now and the end of the year we will have concluded the first batch of the deployment.

"We therefore urge our customers to be patient as our ultimate objective is to ensure that all our customers are eventually metered."

The company explained that it is "adding its quota in narrowing the metering gap, as highlighted by various statistical information in the country.

The recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed an increase of 1.59 percent in the number of prepaid meter customers.

The federal government has consistently enjoined the DisCo to provide meters to customers in a bid to narrow the gap, reduce complaints of high consumption charges and estimated billing, in line with the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act, 2005.

APC Tames PDP, INEC Declares Oyetola Winner of Osun Governorship Election

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 05:14 AM PDT

Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola
Read as Published by THIS DAY Newspaper:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) finally subdued the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced its candidate, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, as the eventual winner of the Osun State governorship election.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Joseph Fuwape, said Oyetola prevailed over PDP's Senator Ademola Adeleke, his main opponent at yesterday's supplementary election, the main one held last Saturday having ended inconclusively.

It was a clean sweep for Oyetola who had trailed behind Adeleke by 254,345 votes to 254,698, leaving a margin of 353 votes.

At yesterday's contest held in seven units across four local governments of the state, the APC cancelled the negative margin, besting the PDP flag bearer by a margin of 472 votes.

Fuwape said Oyetola scored 1,150 votes at yesterday's duel to bring his haul in the race to 255,495 votes, while Adeleke got 325 more votes to close up at 255,023.

Specifically, the APC scored 299 votes in Osogbo LGA; 280 in Orolu; 455 in Ife South; and 126 in Ife North.

He said the PDP garnered 165 votes in Osogbo; 122 in Orolu; 36 in Ife South and two in Ife North.

Announcing the final results, Fuwape, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure, said having scored the highest number of votes, Oyetola was returned as the winner of the governorship election and Governor-elect of Osun State.

But the PDP said the APC victory might be short-lived, describing it as "electoral robbery", which will be resisted. The state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, described the supplementary election "as the most brazen assault on democracy and biggest robbery ever witnessed in the history of the state."

He accused the security personnel of aiding "the open robbery perpetrated by the APC."

Adagunodo explained that thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South in the early hours.

He said, "Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and matchetted on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Government Areas. PDP agent in Olode was axed and abducted about 7a.m. yesterday.

"It was regrettable that election in seven polling units could not be freely and fairly concluded by the INEC. We reject any return of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so called supplementary election result collation be put on hold."

The PDP state chairman further invited leaders of thought in Nigeria and the International community to "rescue Nigeria's democracy from being ruined."

He called on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist a concocted election result on the people of Osun using all legal means at their disposal."

However, the Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, countered the accusations against his party, saying, "The PDP was unable to manipulate the result this time around, so they are crying foul."

Oyatomi said, "We have always known that the PDP had made elaborate arrangements to rig the election through the manipulation of the card readers and it was this process that gave them the votes in the first ballot."

He asserted that the PDP win in the first ballot was a surprise.

According to him, "Most people in Osun had the believe that it would be a straight fight between the APC and Social Democratic Party (SDP). But as God would have it, Osun was saved from the vultures."

Oyatomi also noted, "They attempted to win by fraud, they failed in the first round and eventually lost the rerun election."

Apart from Ward 5 Unit 17 in the Osogbo metropolis, polling units in the remaining three local government areas were domiciled in far-flung areas that were not easily accessible.

However, the election was characterised by heavy presence of security agents and a good turnout of voters.

Officials of INEC arrived the polling units on time.

In order to quicken the process, more polling booths were provided. Card readers were deployed to accredit voters in all the units visited by THISDAY and the process was largely peaceful.

Few cases of conflicts were reported, but the situation was quickly brought under control by vigilant security agents.

Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) reporter, Mr. Tosin Oladokun and Kaftan Television crew led by Mr. Jude Ochinma, were attacked by suspected hoodlums in Ward 5 Alekuwodo, Osogbo, where the governorship rerun was conducted.

The hoodlums reportedly damaged the OSBC official vehicle and seriously wounded the crew who were on official assignment to cover the exercise.

Security agents in the area, including military personnel dislodged the suspected thugs who laid siege to Akindeko market but were unable to arrest the culprits.

Acting Chairman, Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Kehinde Ayantunji, who was at the polling unit at the time of the attack, confirmed the incident.

He said the police intervened swiftly but were unable to apprehend the culprits, who fled when the police stormed the scene of the attack.

He described the action as regrettable, saying media must not at time be the victim of electoral violence.

The police also arrested a woman and two middle aged men at the polling unit on Adewale Street, Ward 5, Unit 17 Alekuwodo in Osogbo local government area for alleged possession of voter cards belonging to other polling units.

Agents of some political parties had raised the alarm over the presence of the persons, who were not registered voters in the unit.

Security operatives intervened to bring the matter under control by taking the individuals away.

Also, some supporters of a particular political party in the state were arrested for possessing assorted charms and Indian hemp at a polling unit in Osogbo.

Secondus: Democracy under Siege

Earlier and before the announcement of results, PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, had called for the cancellation of the supplementary election, saying it was fraught with malpractices.

Secondus spoke at a press conference in Abuja, where he said the state was under siege as security agencies deliberately chased away journalists, observers and supporters of the party from exercising their basic rights.

The party lamented that if what happened in Osun is what would happen in the 2019 general elections, the future of Nigerian democracy is bleak, warning that the country is sliding into crisis.

Secondus stated: "Today we are all aware of the rerun election in Osun State as we address the press conference. We, the members of the National Working Committee (NWC) have reviewed what has happened since, from the distribution of materials to the actual voting that has taken place in some of the units and wards.

"We found that Osun is under siege, therefore today is a black day for Nigeria. We would think that it is a state or some units, but if you look at what has transpired so far from Ekiti to Osun State, Nigerians are groaning in pains especially the Osun people."

"INEC must rise above what is happening in Osun and declare our candidate winner immediately and all the units where the security agencies have seized our people, beaten up, their PVCs collected from them, INEC should immediately cancelled the elections in those areas."

Foreign Observers Express Concern over Alleged Interference

Meanwhile, the election observation team of the U.S., EU and UK have expressed concern over alleged reports of irregularities, harassment and interference by inappropriate persons in the rerun election.

Giving their initial observation on the conduct of the exercise, a member of the team in a short statement said, "We are very concerned by these reports and will be checking with stakeholders to check the facts. We call on all stakeholders to remain calm."

The observers stated their position while addressing journalists in Osogbo in an interview televised by the TVC television station.

Also commenting on the exercise, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) faulted it, saying that the conduct of some key stakeholders clearly ran contrary to democratic norms and standards, as well as best practices in the conduct of credible elections.

The CDD lamented that a number of the incidents recorded during the poll had undermined the sanctity of the vote and the overall credibility of the electoral process.

The centre specifically frowned at the conduct of the security agents as well as political party stalwarts who took steps that were clearly inimical to the conduct of a free, fair and credible election.

The Director of CDD, Idayat Hassan, disclosed this in a statement yesterday in Abuja, where she decried that election observers who attempted to carry out their legitimate duties were arrested and taken to nearby police station, and were only released after being denied the opportunity to keep an eye on the process so as to guarantee its credibility.

Hassan stated: "The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has carefully observed the governorship rerun election in Osun State with a conclusion that the conduct of some key stakeholders clearly ran contrary to democratic norms and standards, as well as best practices in the conduct of credible elections.

"CDD observers reported several cases of denial of access to Polling Units to observers, and even voters. CDD field observers deployed to observe the process and ensure its credibility, especially in Orolu and Osogbo LGAs, were intimidated, threatened and in some cases arrested by security forces.

"Credible reports from our field observers showed that despite being duly accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), several of the observers and journalists were stopped from observing the process."

Fani-Kayode: APC Chieftains Playing with Fire

Reacting thursday, former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said that the re-run election was a charade, saying that the conduct of the APC during the election showed that Nigeria has a long way to go and thereby declared that President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Bola Tinubu, Governor Rauf Aregbesola and other leaders of the APC are playing with "fire" over the re-run election.

"The truth is there was no election in Osun State on Thursday," he said, adding, "It was violence all through. It was daylight robbery and theft. It was a violation of the dignity, rights and sovereignty of the people of Osun State and Yorubaland."
