Position description

The Research Department and the Supervision and Credit Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston are seeking exceptional college graduates who are prepared to take an active role in high-quality economic research and monetary policy making.

The Research Department provides current economic analysis and policy advice to Federal Reserve decision makers and conducts innovative research with the aim of improving our understanding of the U.S. and global economies and encouraging better policy outcomes. The Supervision and Credit Department's Risk Policy Analysis Unit conducts research and analysis to support the Federal Reserve System in bank supervision, the development and implementation of regulatory policy, and the formulation of monetary policy. The Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston are seeking exceptional college graduates who are prepared to take an active role in high-quality economic research and monetary policy making.

Research Assistants (RAs) typically work for one or two economists, developing a personal relationship with the economists they support and a deeper understanding of their research topics. The economist's fields of interest are wide-ranging and include macroeconomics, international and labor economics, housing, health decisions, behavioral economics, and finance. In addition, the Research Department houses the New England Public Policy Center, which conducts analysis of economic and public policy issues that affect the New England region.

The position requires a two-year commitment. After their time at the Boston Fed, (RAs) go on to attend prestigious graduate programs in economics, public policy, or other disciplines; take a job in business, finance or law; or stay with the Bank in a variety of positions.

RAs are full time employees of the Bank. As such, they are competitively compensated and are eligible for a wide range of benefits including health care and tuition reimbursement.

Citizenship
  • Research Assistant positions require U.S. citizenship.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review, organize, and analyze economic and financial data.
  • Write programs using statistical software such as STATA, MATLAB, R, SAS or Python
  • Conduct literature reviews, perform thorough data analysis, and prepare written summaries of results for economists.
  • Prepare charts and tables using spreadsheet and data visualization software packages.
  • Conduct economic research for policy memos and for articles intended for publication by The Boston Fed, academic journals, and business periodicals.
  • Design programs to clean data, perform statistical tests, and run regressions. Update and maintain data series regularly used by economists
  • Proofread, edit, and fact-check articles and papers.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in economics, math, statistics, computer science, international relations, or related field with concentration in economics.
  • An excellent academic record.
  • Strong analytical, communications, and organization skills.
  • Experience with statistical software packages and knowledge of statistics and econometrics.

The Terrapin Leadership Institute (TLI) is a five week-long leadership development program tasked to guide students across campus—through hands-on activities and critical dialogue—in discovering who they are as leaders and becoming confident with tangible leadership skills and strategies that can be applied to their everyday lives. The workshop is a low-commitment, high intensity series that is meant to accommodate the student's busy schedule. There is no cost to participate in TLI!

Sessions Overview:

Sessions will take place starting the week of March 1st, 2022 and conclude the week of April 4th, 2022 (no sessions during Spring Break). There are two tracks available for enrollment:
  • Spring Track
    • In-person Sessions (5 weeks)
    • Wednesdays & Thursdays at 5:30PM - 7PM
  • Social Change: Group + Community Leadership Track
    • Online Sessions (5 weeks)
    • Tuesdays at 5PM - 6:30PM

The Feller Center for Advising & Career Planning in BSOS is happy to offer students the ability to book a private booth for virtual or phone interviews. The interview booth is equipped with semi-soundproof glass, outlets to power your laptop, and a desk suitable for all laptop sizes.

The booth may be reserved Monday through Friday between 9 am - 4 pm. All interviews must conclude by 4:30 p.m. ET. Room reservation blocks have a maximum limit of 90 minutes each.

BSOS majors may reserve the booth for the following reasons:
Virtual interview
Informational interview
To complete timed interview tasks for an application

2022 BSOS Summer Research Initiative Program

The 2022 BSOS Summer Research Initiative program is now accepting applications!

If you're looking for a paid summer program that will give you research experience in the behavioral and social sciences, then we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity!

The BSOS Summer Research Initiative is part of the UMD's College of Behavioral and Social Science's long-standing commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness.

The SRI provides:
  • A $3,000 stipend (before taxes)
  • Travel to/from College Park, Maryland
  • University housing and meals
  • Program activities
  • The 2022 BSOS SRI runs from June 6, 2022 - July 29, 2022. Participants are required to arrive Saturday, June 4th for the weekend orientation.
Key Expectations and Qualifications
  • Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • Be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year higher education institution, with preference given to those will have obtained junior or senior status by the fall 2022;
  • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing graduate study in one of the behavioral or social sciences, with preference given to those interested in doctoral studies;
  • Will have taken a basic statistics or research methodology course; and
  • Possess an excellent academic record, including a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA
